Well, you've read the notes, the notes waxed and waned, and now it is time for you to post until the waxing and waning cows come home.

Ah, hamburgers.  One of my favorite things.  I shall have to respond when more fully awake.

Perhaps I will have one today in honor of the TOD.

Unfortunately, it can't be one of my favorites, as none of those exist in these here parts.  But it will be decent.

No, I take that back!  One does indeed exist nearby.  Not only that, but I was just thinking recently how I am overdue for it.

TOD:

There used to be a drive-in in Seattle called BurgerMaster.  I don't know if it still exists, since it's been many decades since I've been there.  It was located out beyond the UW.

They had the greatest hamburgers; messy as hell, but they tasted terrific.

We watched THE LAST OF ROBIN HOOD last night.

It was okay; not terrific.  The 3 leading performers were superb, particularly Kevin Kline as Errol Flynn.  I'd love it if he would do my Errol Flynn one-person play.

My problem with the movie was the script.  A lot of the dialogue was bad and the story really had no focus.  Not sure if it was about Beverly Aadland (Dakota Fanning) or her mother (Susan Sarandon).

TOD:
When I first moved to Los Angeles, I worked in downtown L.A. for about a year (and never again, thank goodness). In an alley near our office building, there was a food truck that only made hamburgers which were very good.
The burger places that are near are home now are Five Guys Burgers and Fries and also Freddie's Steakburgers. They're both good, but we like Freddie's a little better. It's nice the way the burgers hang out over the bun and they're not perfectly round, they're sort of sloppy-shaped. Anyway, what's annoying about Five Guys is that they don't serve shakes at all, which is odd for a burger place. I once asked them if they get a lot of requests for shakes and they said they do, and also requests for ranch dressing that they don't have. Freddie's not only has shakes, but they have "custard" which is really ice cream with all sorts of fun toppings, which they'll make into a sundae or mix it in, known as a "concrete".
The burger I recently had at The Boneyard was also very good.

The great David Carroll singing Anthem in Chess. I get goosebumps every time I hear him sing this. And after hearing Josh Groban perform the same song, I realize that the reason is the singer.

My favorite hamburger used to be the Brawny Lad from Frisch's Big Boy....1/4 lb. of beef, onion slice, rye bun....with cheese.

Right now I like the BK Double Cheese Burger at Burger King......have it your way.

Love burgers. Love, love, love burgers.

I had readers who used to claim that I spent too much time waxing rhapsodic about better burger joints. But, say, what you will, burgers are as Texas as enchilada plates, breakfast tacos or chicken-fried steak. They are a food people hold dear.

My favorite is usually the one in front of me. I don't need too much on a burger, though I did have one earlier this year with an Irish big breakfast on top of the beef patty: a banger, fried egg, blood sausage, broiled tomato, rasher of bacon and cheese. Everything but the baked beans.

Here in San Antonio, we have the bean burger. It's refried beans smeared over the patty with melted cheese and Fritos. Some have taken to adding jalapeno slices or salsa on top, which I think brings a freshness and brightness to each bite.

I love a chargrilled burger most of all, and there's a place in town, Big Bob's, that does the best. Plus, his beer-battered onion rings with a little caraway seed rule. He has a regular 50/50 burger that's half bacon and half ground beef. On special occasions, his math gets the better of him and he does a 50/50/50 burger, which is half bacon, half ground beef and half smoked brisket, if you just accept his math.

For a chain burger, I'll generally stick with another local favorite, Whataburger, because it's chargrilled, too, and the bun tastes fresh.

Okay here I am in 1970 at age 20....in the back row with out of control hair and glasses.  Also in the back row from left cousin Stan, my brother Mike, and my cousin Steve....who was the Indian Mascot at the Indian Creek High School Basketball games around this time.

In front, two of Stan's boys, my three brothers Kent, David, Dane (in glasses), and a little boy I don't remember.

Scott....the first little boy on the left in the front row....a few months after this picture....was waiting for the school bus.  His homework fell out of his notebook and he ran into the street to get it and was killed by a passing car.

I'll admit I'm not a big cheeseburger fan. I find the chemical aftertaste of American cheese food to be rather repulsive. And that ruined me for Swiss or other cheeses on top.

I fall in to the late James Beard's category of preferring the cheese to be stuffed inside the patty, so that it sort of melts into the meat or at least provides this gooey center when you bite into it. There's one place in SA that features this style of burger. Timbo's calls it a Yellow Submarine.

I want one. Now.

The newspapers reported that the kids had been pushing each other into the street as a sort of game.....but NONE of kids told their parents that.....it's kind of a mystery, but I believe it happened the way his brother said....

Terry Pratchett has died. I never read his books. I don't read a lot of fantasy, but I followed his fight against early onset Alzheimer's disease, which he called an "embuggerance." What a great word. It's like something the Sherman Brothers would've coined.

T.O.D.

I must confess that the hamburger I had recently at the restaurant in Bass Pro Shop was pretty damn good.

Having grown up in Tacoma, I have to include the burgers at Frisco Freeze, although they are an acquired taste apparently.  You either love them or you don't understand the fuss.  One of our state's former governors instructed his chauffeur to always pull off the freeway and head to Frisco Freeze any time the governor passed thru Tacoma.  However, I know for a fact, that the governor's limo was not the only limo that ever pulled into Frisco Freeze.

I pretty much like about any burger or cheese burger, but not the fancy once.   Lettuce, tomato, onion and bacon are ok, but the other "creative" toppings are a bit much for me.

No burgers topped with truffles?

I am abstaining from the TOD since I'm a vegetarian.

How about veggie burgers?

I never really have them, TCB.  I'm afraid the restaurant will cook them on the grill right after cooking a regular burger!

You really are strict.  I never thought about that and I don't plan on asking, however, now that you have put the thought into my head.... :P

I know. She won't leave me alone.

I've never slept in my recliner, but I may try tonight

I have a co-worker who has back issues and when she has a pretty bad day (back-wise), she said that sleeping in her recliner is really comfy and helps.  Granted, it's a different problem that what you have, but she likes sleeping in her recliner.  At least, you might also. :)

Jack in the Box has a couple of new "Buttery Jacks" with "melted garlic herb butter."  They're not bad, but not worth the price...almost $5 each.

I keep reading instructions and looking on my Canon printer/copier/scanner, but I cannot figure out how to scan ONLY the area of a photograph and not include a scan of the entire scanner bed.

Instructions keep saying to find a PREVIEW function.....but I can't find it on my screen......grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The JitB burgers also have butter on the bun, but if they're freshly made and very hot, the butter melts and gets everywhere, including on the burger and my hands and the cardboard container that they're served in.

BK, is there any possibility of putting the "Outside the Box" series on DVD?  Or does this kind of web series prevent that from happening?

Back.  Tonight's house was about three-quarters bought out by some local Knights of Columbus, who catered themselves a li'l par-tay in the lobby and were feeling no pain by the time the downbeat was given.  They had a great time, and we ended up putting on a pretty good shew.

The cast and audiences keep telling us how great the "orchestra" sounds.  Sadly, they have no idea.  Not only is this the orchestration from Hell (or one of them), but we are six little people who cannot possibly do the show justice.  Our "ensemble" is finally as tight as it should be, but we make no other claims.

BUTTER BURGERS

I've never had one, but a Wisconsin butter burger is a thing unto itself.  Cable TV shows like "Diners, Dives, Drive-ins" or whatever the name is will always eventually get to Milwaukee to cover the original butter burger at:

The new Outside the Box season has been ready to go for a year and a half now - and every time I think about finally doing it, there's just too much else going on.  But I will get to it.  The plan has always been to put the first two seasons on Blu-ray - but we have a lot of work to do with bloopers, cut footage and other stuff.

Finished with my viewing - four episodes of House of Cards' new season.  The gal from The Heart Machine finally appeared in episode four and I of course remembered her immediately - the lesbian friend of the girl on the lam from season two.
