Title: SAYING GOODBYE TO INSIDE OUT

Well, you've read the notes, you've read the notes inside out, and now it is time for you to post until the Inside Out cows come home.

Yesterday, I had a cue-to-cue rehearsal for "Laughing Stock" and it took a little over 4 1/2 hours.  We ran the entire Dracul: Prince of the Undead scene and the Hamlet scene.  After that, I got something to eat before I went to usher for "Laughter On the 23rd Floor," which was very funny and very good.

Today, we're going to have a quick "Laughing Stock" speed-through of just the lines to help us get used to them all without having to worry about blocking AND lines.

After that, I'm going to Theater Artists Olympia's rehearsal of their (our, actually, I'm on their Board of Directors) production of "In a Dark, Dark House" by Neil LaBute.  It's the total opposite of "Laughing Stock" in that it's a very intense play about child sexual abuse.  I haven't read it or seen it yet, so I'm really looking forward to that.

But the main reason that I'm going to the rehearsal is that for the Sunday rehearsal before opening night of every TAO show, the Board supplies dinner for the actors and crew as a thank you.  Even if I was in the show, I would still bring something because I'm on the board.

Very late...after ushering for "Laughter on the 23rd Floor" last night, my friend Margo and I went out to eat.  I didn't get back until a little after midnight and BK had switched the day.  I always stay up too late and tonight is no exception.

I just came across this on YouTube. Check about the 21:25 point and you might see (briefly) somebody you recognize.

I used my encounter with Eddie as the basis of my short story, "Bugsy's Boys," which is the final story in DRACULA MEETS JACK THE RIPPER & Other Revisionist Histories, which is available in paperback, Kindle and audio versions on Amazon.

Good morning, all.

I have no good explanation for this, but if you heard me croak out my "good morning", you would be asking me how long I've had this cold and how I'm feeling now.

And I don't have a cold!  But I'm getting so congested through the night that I wake up with almost no voice, just lots of nose blowing and harrumphing.

The harrumphing, of course, is the best part.

At least I'm able to sleep.  Allergies?  Who knows?  But I'm certainly experiencing a lot of sinus goings on like never before in my life.

Good morning, all! I am waiting on a phone call from a young conductor, Jackson Cooper.  I forget to call him yesterday, and i fear he may have forgotten me this morning.

Good news about BK's blurb for the new book, DR Jeanne's health, and all HHW events.

I am feeling too lazy to head down to Toyland.  I'll work around here.

DR MichaelShayne asked about the Paint Your Wagon songs.  Here are the answers:

Take The Wheels Off The Wagon was added to the tour was it used in the Encores show?
NO.

Was the cut song called "What Do The Other Folks Do" rewritten as "What Do The Simple Folks Do"? for Camelot or are they just similar in title?
SEE THIS: http://www.nypl.org/blog/2013/01/17/metamorphosis-song-what-do-simple-folk-do

What songs (if any) replaced the cut songs "Muchee Good World" and "Shh"
"Muchee Good World" was dropped in book revisions for "What's Goin' On Here?"
"Sh" was in the show throughout tryouts on Philadelphia and Boston; it was for the Mormon wife and the Crocker, the Englishman she elopes with late in Act Two; nothing replaced it.

There were quite a few book revisions: the character of Ben Rumson died in the tryouts; once the comic Chinese characters lost "Muchee Good World," they had little to do beyond "I'm On My Way." There was also a cut song, "They Never Go Home."

DR Ben, I believe you implied that a certain gentleman might be of help in the transferring of "Old Media" like cassette tapes to digital files.  I may, in fact, have just stumbled upon a good way, finally, to do it right here in the comfort of home.   Experimentation will commence this afternoon.  If successful, and even if not, I'll describe what I was attempting.  If no go, we'll move into the next phase.

Either way, I am pleased to announce that my Nov. 1979 off-the-air recording of Mahagonny plays as well as it ever did, and that DR Elmore will soon have a copy for his listening pleasure.

Here's a link to the article
http://www.playbill.com/news/article/were-losing-our-minds-comparing-four-recordings-of-sondheims-follies-344560

"In 2012, Bruce Kimmel of Kritzerland remixed the original recording, cleaning up the sound and establishing a clarity for this version that heightened its listenability. A total of 2,500 copies of this recording were made available, and it should be in the collection of any musical theatre enthusiast."

Ushered for the symphony this afternoon. Best of it was Stravinsky's Petrushka. I first her that music when I was a freshman in high school and Barishnikov danced the role. I remember him clearly but hated the music then. Wasn't ready for it.

Today I lived the music and was glad there was no dancing.

This is a recording of the piece with which we closed our concert today.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbwhSP3ZIq4

The gentlemen who wrote the words was there. Before our performance of the piece, he talked a bit and then recited the words he had written.
He broke up a bit at the end, remembering his friend the composer who is now gone.
We were all in tears and could barely sing. It was quite moving. The composer's family were all there, and all thanked us profusely afterward.

Yesterday's all-day travel was very tiring.  I am now onboard ship.  Took a lovely little nap out on the private balcony.  The ship is expected to sail at any time.

Nicky has  calmed down and is now doing fine.  He actually sent me a photo to my iphone.

The weather must be nice if you napped on the balcony :)

DR vixmom, do you have any idea about your Manhattan time? Dinner with you would be a lovely way to spend some of my day.

I say it's always time for a Manhattan. But I'm having a Negroni right now.

Manhattans and Martinis are my #1 favorite cocktails.  Ironically, for all their traditional simplicity, they're the most adventuresome to order because in most jernts you never know what you're going to get.  In a way, no two are alike, in spite of what you specify or don't specify when ordering.  Hell, no two of my own are exactly alike, and you'd think I'd have it down to a science.

(DR John G. - does that make sense?  I'm sure you know what I mean, though I could probably have expressed it better.)

Anyway, that was just rambling preamble leading into the point of my post, which is:  I didn't mention this at the time, either to DR Elmore or to our waiter, but the Manhattan I had at the Brooklyn Diner the other night was Perfection in a Glass.  All I knew was that I was getting a Makers Mark one, which is totally fine, but it's still all in the mixing, and the result was sublime.  Why is it that this always seems to happen when I must deny myself a second, lest I end up watching a show while trying not to fall into the aisle?

Just something to mull over as I sip this 1783, the ridiculously low-priced "small batch" bourbon from Evan Williams...

I'm told we got a very nice mention on Playbill from someone comparing four cast albums of Follies.

Here's a link to the article
http://www.playbill.com/news/article/were-losing-our-minds-comparing-four-recordings-of-sondheims-follies-344560 (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/were-losing-our-minds-comparing-four-recordings-of-sondheims-follies-344560)

"In 2012, Bruce Kimmel of Kritzerland remixed the original recording, cleaning up the sound and establishing a clarity for this version that heightened its listenability. A total of 2,500 copies of this recording were made available, and it should be in the collection of any musical theatre enthusiast."

Very nice!

Good article. I hope they truly investigate whoever released the juror's name.  That is a crime. If you have to have police protection and hire a lawyer, why would you ever stand up for what you believe against the other jurors.  Scary time for our criminal justice system

I perfectly understand you. You order a martini and they make with something unwanted like vodka instead of perfectly perfect gin. And the vermouth can make it all go haywire.

Chas , Artie's  pastrami Reuben was open faced and piled with at least a lb of  beautiful  lean pastrami with Swiss and just the right amount of sauerkraut    I had the Russian dressing on the side and barely used it as the sandwich was so delicious  that the dressing detracted from, rather than enhancing , the flavor.

A song cue if ever there was one!

I’ve hopped bar to bar
Quickly spending a pile and
Dropped into some quaint honky-tonks
I’ve had a martini out in Staten Island
A crème de menthe in Southern Bronx

Went borough to borough
The expense wasn’t minor
But I gladly spent my meager means
For the Manhattan I had at the Brooklyn Diner
Was the envy of all here in Queens

Back from an absolutely incredible closing performance and then Sandy's show, which went really, really well.   A couple of lyric flubs, and some odd stuff from Lanny, but overall it was great.  If we do it again I think I'll pull out one song and redo some of the patter.
