Good morning, all! I slept late, which was nice, and I am still pondering what needs to be accomplished today.  I have to do laundry, book a date with my barber, put a lot of things away and vacuum.

Tomorrow, I'll finish packing up the cartons going from Toyland to Ohio and schedule the Fed Ex pickup.

DR GEORGE it has been my experience that letting other groups use your space is MORE trouble than it's worth.

If you decide to go ahead....even for a part of the box office.....you should have a guarantee of a certain amount.....that way when they get five people in for their show, you still get a reasonable amount of money.

They also expect a LOT of you, and your staff will always have to be on call for them. You have wear and tear on your equipment and spend lots of your time....eventually the tail starts wagging the dog.

My suggestion is let them go someplace else.  For me, improv is a pretty useless enterprise.  You go for about thirty minutes and get one "brilliant" comeback, otherwise it's a struggle.

They just make it look easy on WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY?....and even they are not funny a LOT of the time.

I also enjoyed BIG EYES and I also felt that Waltz was, at times, a bit "over the top".

However, from what I've learned since seeing the movie, Waltz actually underplayed the role.  The real Walter Keane, according to the filmmakers, was much more flamboyant that what Waltz portrayed.

Well yesterday we did a 90 minute ANTIGONE at 10 a.m. in the MORNING for three of the four county high schools.  One high school did not attend.

We had to be done at 11:30 a.m. so that we could have a talk back and then the students could have a tour of the set and theatre and still have time for lunch before going back to school.

Sometime during the second half, the stage manager came on the system and said: "Pick up the pace...we are behind."

Well.....I went out....my part had already been cut by more than half....so I just went out and cut big parts out of the middle of my two monologs....I told Creon beforehand his cues would be the same, the middle would be different.....

It was the fastest prophecy in the history of Thebes.

No matter what the director says, there are too many people doing ACTING and PAUSING and WALKING and MAKING FACES.....minutes and minutes of it.  We have the Odes, which have been choreographed.  They are nice....but this group takes minutes to get into place....and then there is always that LONG DRAMATIC PAUSE before they start....more slow walking and talking....

We had another dress rehearsal last night....call at 6 p.m. and go at 7:30 p.m.!  And it was longer than ever.....

Eternal doom.......

Wednesday morning greetings!  Richard and I went last night to the hospital where I've twice been a cardiac patient, but just for a meeting.  It was the first time I'd entered that building other than through the ER.  The program was on Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD), the phenomenon that caused my heart attack, and was presented by an RN who is also a fellow SCAD survivor.  It was very informative.

I need to get ready to meet my hiking group.  DR Ginny you probably think I'm crazy and wondering how I can hike.  I am sure I'm crazing and not sure about the second part.  There is a road I can transfer to if the hiking part is too difficult.  I can then meet back up with them for the coffee/hot chocolate stop.

Laundry is in the dryers, the barber appointment is made for tomorrow, the trash has gone to the basement.  I think I will vacuum before I bring the dry laundry up.

I also have a Tuesday morning date with British actress and singer Rosemary Ashe, and that should be fun. She's a good lady.

Now having actually seen Walter Keane in action (you tube) I'd say Mr. Waltz did what he was supposed to do.  He was knocked by a LOT of critics for it.  They were wrong.
Title: Re: FINISHING THE ONE-GIRL MUSICAL
Post by: bk on April 15, 2015, 11:28:08 AM
Just made sure I didn't knock him, but I didn't - whew!  And interestingly, I did mention his accent, but the real Walter Keane had a very strange cadence to his speech - not Mr. Waltz's Austrian cadence, but it's not so far afield really.  But you had many critics saying Waltz was just bad and blaming Mr. Burton for allowing such an outsized performance.  All they would have had to do was read up on this guy.

You make some good points, but the acting group has made it clear that they don't really need anything from us except promotion and the space.  They can work around any sets that we might have up and we'll have someone there at all their performances to make sure that nothing happens to our stuff.
Title: Re: FINISHING THE ONE-GIRL MUSICAL
Post by: George on April 15, 2015, 01:23:17 PM
Their "improv" actually has an outline, so it's not entirely improvised...just the dialogue.  The core group has been doing this for a long time, so they know what they're doing and people on our board know them personally and know that they're good people.
Title: Re: FINISHING THE ONE-GIRL MUSICAL
Post by: George on April 15, 2015, 01:23:52 PM
It also sounds like they have a dedicated following, so it should be a good thing for both of our groups.  The other plus (for us) is that it'll help publicize not only that the space is available for rental, but that Theater Artists Olympia (we're the stewards of The Midnight Sun) is a working theater group and have shows of our own.  Our theater group and the space can only benefit from that kind of exposure.
Title: Re: FINISHING THE ONE-GIRL MUSICAL
Post by: George on April 15, 2015, 01:25:36 PM
AND it's a done deal.  It was actually voted on last month.  Last night, we just talked about some of the details...we set an audition date and a couple of possible starting dates and made sure that they only want the space and none of our "stuff".

I can't remember if I mentioned that I'd watched the new DVD release of the Follies production from France. I liked it a lot. Set-wise it is a bit limp, but the acting and singing were good, and there's that full orchestra in the pit. It is performed mostly in English. They made what I thought was a very wise and very judicious use of split-screen, so that you saw both the overall stage picture without losing some of the actorly detail. I would recommend it.

Sorry. My new bike is in perfect condition. It is the lake that has problems.

Actually I moved the thing that measures distance/how far i bike (not realizing what it was). So Monday it stayed on 2 kms until i figured out how to adjust it. today i only went 10kms. It's been pretty windy.

Bob has a jury trial about a hour a way so I have the office to myself for three days.  I got a lot done yesterday and today, hoping to get even more done tomorrow,  Being sick last month really put be behind

I've also figured out a few time saving things around the office, moving things to make it easier for me to do everything.  I got some new Spanish legal term dictionaries and a new Oxford Spanish Dictionary to help with my translations.  It's a lot of hard work by myself and it won't mean making a lot of money, but I gotta say the freedom of being totally on my own is incredible.

Congratulations on Melissa Manchester.

Saw her twice in musicals. One was a stage version of "Love Me or Leave Me." The music and singing was good, but, well, she was no Doris Day.

The other was "Song and Dance" with her singing the first act. She was much better here.

Has anybody heard the musical she wrote? I think it was "I Sent a Letter to My True Love."

I have this CD.  She actually performed here in Olympia (I ushered for her concert) and I was able to get her to sign my CD!  HOWEVER, that CD was in one of the boxes that got stolen from my garage a few years ago, so I had to get another copy, but of course without her signature. :(

I do like the recording and the performers.  It's an interesting story, but I think it's pretty well done.

Watching "Frieda," which I'd somehow never seen.

Like Julie Taymor's visual sense and Selma's performance, but dramatically, the script is messy and you have to bring a little too much history with you to get it all. I was glad I had read Barbara Kingsolver's The Lacuna.

Thinking I may need a snack, but what?  I do NOT want Gelson's - could do Subway but that's bigger than a snack.  Maybe a bowl of chicken corn chowder from Jerry's - I could bring it home and eat it here.

No George tonight?

I'm still here.  I just finished watching a documentary that I got from the library called Being Ginger (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IO5G5S4/).  It's about this guy who is "ginger" (red headed) who goes to Scotland to go to school (film school, I think) and it starts out with him interviewing girls on the street to see if anyone likes men who are ginger and almost no one does...and they tell him why.
