Post by: bk on May 04, 2015, 01:18:00 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Kritzerland at Sterling's 57, kind of the Heinz of Kritzerland shows, and now it is time for you to post until the 57 cows come home.

Elmer Bernstein was nominated for 4 Ocars for Best Song.
Some were worthy some not.

I think the best two were A Walk On The Wild Side and True Grit.

The okay song was Where Ever Love Takes Me.

The song I couldn't figure how it got nominated was My Wishing Doll from Hawaii. Julie Andrews sings it for only 45 seconds and the song is interrupted and heard again.

There is also Douglas Bernstein who also wrote some great songs.

We got the rain that missed DR Cillaliz yesterday. It poured buckets for about half an hour. We also got hail - so much so that you could scoop the pellets up in gobs by the handful. It didn't seem to have done any permanent damage to our cars.

The haunting "Hello and Goodbye" from FROM NOON TILL THREE (music by Elmer Bernstein, lyric by the Bergmans) was nominated for a Golden Globe, but it lost to "Evergreen" -

not a title song but played over the title

Good morning, all!  I am stuck here waiting fo UPS to cart away the incorrect Staples item, so I will work on my current Moross score, "From Atlanta To The sea," about Sherman's march through the South, in Gentlemen, Be Seated!  This one is really long.

I was really out of it yesterday and missed sending you performance vibes, BK.  I'm happy the show went well.

I love everything from "West Side Story." It's one of my top three favorite musicals of all time. Every song is a gem, so it would be silly to list them all.

I love this Elmer Bernstein title song AND score.....for obvious and other reasons. Lyrics and singing by Mary Hopkin.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiSs6cVjKus

As DR AMY wrote.....West Side Story.....but especially "America" and "I Feel Pretty" ...

I also like the songs previously mentioned:  "Glitter and Be Gay" - but I like it a bit less after hearing a singer popular on Broadway screech her way through it.....and "Conga" from WONDERFUL TOWN.

The pressure is mounting to be ready in time. Basically, since we are expecting company on the 10th or 11th, I must be ready by then. I need to sort out all liquids and take as much as I can, plus food. They won't put that in storage. Then we need to pack as little clothes as possible as we need room for papers, rare books, Craig's baseball collection, and a few other things we don't can't in storage or can't put there.
Sorry, I will try to read and keep up but will likely comment very little.
GOOD VIBES TO ALL!!!

I know that Leonard Bernstein, preferred his last name be pronounced BERN- STEYN (as in the drinking vessel), but I don't remember hearing or reading if Elmer Bernstein had a preference. I do remember that Leonard Bernstein was punctilious and did not like his name pronounced BERN- STEEN.

I knew that Mr. Leonard B. would be upset with the wrong pronunciation. Does this mean that Mr. Elmer B. was also?

They both were students of Copland, no?

Elmer Bernstein scored a so-so Western spoof, "The Hallelujah Trail" which has a very sing-along-able title tune. His music saves the movie from being totally bad. Burt Lancaster seems to be acting in a very different movie or didn't get the joke, and is a lead weight.

Monday afternoon greetings!  Richard and I are back from a little road trip to Richmond, Indiana, to meet our new great-nephew.  They are now on their way home, but we decided it would be less confusing for us to visit them in the hospital than to wait until they were home with all the grandparents, other relatives, friends, and the dog and cat.  We had a nice little visit, just the 5 of us, and left when they took Baby J away for one last blood test before being released.  He is a real sweetie who got to meet his godparents yesterday:

I forgot. It's Star Wars Day. The Fourth of May. "May the fourth be with you" which is a kind of lispy version of "may the force be with you", so I'm surprised someone didn't already complain that it's not very politically correct.
Anyway, it's the 38th anniversary of the release of the original movie.

I forgot. It's Star Wars Day. The Fourth of May. "May the fourth be with you" which is a kind of lispy version of "may the force be with you", so I'm surprised someone didn't already complain that it's not very politically correct.
Anyway, it's the 38th anniversary of the release of the original movie.

I did some laundry this weekend and washed all of my Star Wars shirts.  I didn't even think to wear one of them today. :-\

Do you have a lot of Star Wars shirts?

Only three...and I only bought them (new) a couple of years ago, so they're not vintage at all.  They're just really cool. :)

Seven days before I have the surgery, I have to add two additional eye drops, twice a day.

I can't get beyond the trashing stage to reach the packing stage.

Jane, whenever I've had to pack and move, I always get stuck. I do really well then just seem to get stuck and not be able to accomplish anything.  Luckily every time there's been a deadline I've had a friend come over and say "Ok, let's get going" and help me get done.   It's an overwhelming process in my opinion. One I hope I don't have to do again

Wonderful!

I think I will continue my GREAT EXPECTATIONS streak with the 1946 David Lean film tonight, then move on to the BBC 1981 version with Joan Hickson as Miss Havisham.

DR JRand64, I look at some of those photos and think you look like the Madwoman of Beirut!

Whatever you do, don't listen to the musical versions. There are two flopsicals based on the book.

I re-read Great Ex last year or the year before. It really is one of Dickens' best novels.

Ushering for a Boz Scaggs concert tonight.

I always liked Boz Scaggs

You really would have enjoyed the concert tonight. He played all his old hits, of course, but he also played stuff in a variety of styles, including some Louisiana blues and a Doug Sahm song in honor of his playing in San Antonio. The show was low-key and that made it just about the music.

Perhaps some of you have seen the TV commercial for Chaz Dean's "Wen" hair products. Every time I see it and think of the name "Wen" that it cries out for an Abbott & Costello "Who's On First" type of back-and-forth. Something like: "When will you shampoo?" "Yes, wen." "That's what I was asking: when ill you shampoo?" "When I have Wen." and so on. Maybe there's something there and maybe there's nothing. It just struck me as a product name/TV ad that needs poking fun at.
