Well, you've read the notes, the notes wore a gaily-colored serape and spoke of a big anniversary, and now it is time for you to post until the gaily-colored cows come home.

I first saw "The First Nudie Musical" on its New York opening day at the 68th Street Playhouse (a movie theater which became a Children's Place clothing store at some point).
-
Vibes for TCB and the surgery preparations.
-
Happy Birthday, George!

TOD:
I don't recall the first time I saw THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL. It was probably on one of the cable channels. Was it on Z?
It holds up extremely well. Love the swearing scene.
-
BK,
Having directed in a similar situation, I totally agree that you should never start filming a movie with a nude scene. Let the people get comfortable first.
However, I would schedule those scenes very early in the shoot. That way, if somebody gets cold feet, you can replace them without having to junk too much film.
-
Good morning, all.
More vibes to vixmom and family. And vibes to all the rest of yez. Just because.
TCB, when my optometrist gave me my eye exam last week, he had just had one eye decataracted and was looking forward to getting the other one done.
-
Did I just make up that word? Decataracted?
-
Happy Birthday, DR George!
-
Happy Nudie Anniversary to BK!!!

Happy Happy Birthday, DR George!

A very happy 40th anniversary to FIRST NUDIE!
I'm taking the Blu-ray out to watch. Been wanting to, anyway. It will have to wait till tomorrow night, but as it happens, so will the cinco de mayonnaise because I will be out this evening. So tomorrow I shall have a Margarita as I plumb the pleasures of NUDIE. Yes, that will be the ticket.
-
For years I've waffled between the Mann Westwood and the Fox, being uncertain which I went to for FIRST NUDIE. I was living in my little Beverly Hills apartment, and one is just as likely as the other. However, these days I give more weight (about thirty-five pounds, if you must know) to it being Westwood.
I sure do wish I had been at the sneak preview!
-
Happy Birthday to DR George!
-
Good morning, all! I slept late. It took me forever playing with the remote to remove the subtitles from the Criterion edition of Lean's Great Expectations/ I finished watching it around 11:00 and was in bed around 11:45. It's so much clearer with the entire plot of Pip and Herbert Pocket's attempt to smuggle Magwich out of London than the 2012, which is so dark and murky that the entire collision with the steamship and the reasons that Magwich is pursued by the law are poorly done. Of course, Lean screws up the ending of his film with the happy ending for Pip and Estella, but the Magwich plot is clearly laid out and Lean's cast is tremendous. What both films do not do is clarify Pip's financial situation and career once he loses his fortune through Magwich's return to London.
I think I will reread the novel before I watch the longer BBC version.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday To Our DR George !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday morning greetings! I'm off to Dayton for lunch with the grantwriters today. Also, some errands, including casting my vote for the local library operating levy.

Happiest of birthdays to DR George!

Good morning, all.
Vibes to all in need. I hope Vixmom listed them all.

Happy birthday, George!

Happy 40th, Nudie Musical!

Happy Birthday DR GEORGE!

I had seen the soundtrack recording for THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL in magazine ads, and we stocked it at the Drama Book Shop when I began work there in July 1979. No one working at the Shop had seen it, but my memory is that there were a few stills on the back of the LP and they, along with the song titles, intrigued me.
I moved into my first apartment at 94th Street and Broadway in December 1979, and a block away there was a wonderful, rather seedy revival hues, the Thalia, which showed double features of films, with a program changing every two-three days. I saw a ton of films there, from Alec Guinness’ wonderful comedy THE HORSE’S MOUTH to all of John Waters and Pasolini. Every month I received their flyer of the next month and I would circle every film I wanted to see, get to a few and miss the rest I couldn’t afford because of the lousy wage the Book hop paid then. I still miss the Thalia.
So, in late winter or early spring of 1980, THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL showed up on the schedule. I have no memory of whatever film they paired with it, but my composer friend from the Book Shop, Thom Heinrichs, and I went to the first showing after work. He had to get back to Queens after the film so we did not stay for the second feature, but I loved the film s much that I went back to the Thalia two hours later and caught the last showing.
The next day, I’m sure I drove everyone at the Book Shop to distraction with my repeating lines that I really loved, but at one pint I said, Bruce Kimmel is a genius and I want to work with him. A customer, a young actress named Leila, as I recall, said, “I know Bruce Kimmel; we went to college together. I know several in the film.” I haven’t seen her in years.
A couple of years later, when i was workng with Debbie Gravitte, I asked her if she was the vocal on “Lesbian Butch Dyke.” Her comment: yes, I was. Now you know. That must have been around 1985-86, and then in 1991, after I was fired from a recording project by a little shit whose excuse that I was terminated because my work was poor led to a couple of years of unemployment and depression, I ran across an interview with Bay Cities record producer Bruce Kimmel in FANFARE magazine. I made phone call, and 27 years or so later, here I am.
-
I first heard of THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL in a book by Danny Peary called CULT MOVIES, I am not sure if it was volume 1 or volume 2.
He said great things about the movie and about MR BK.
A couple of years later, I was in a PEACHES RECORD STORE, and TFNM video was in a big bin with a bunch of other $5 videos. I purchased it.....it was very funny.....
I now have the DVD and the Blu Ray.....and watch it now and then. It was most interesting to join HHW and be a friend with its creator.
-
Vibes to the in-laws of DR VIXMOM's in-law.
Vibes to DR TCB, DAN M, and MICHAEL on their upcoming procedures.
-
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mega Vibes for DR vixmom and her in-laws! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
DR TCB - I may have told you this.....Dale Evans used to be on PTL often with Jan and Paul, and she had her own show for awhile on the network talking with other old "stars" - including Debra Paget and Gale Storm.
She said she kept riding her horse into trees and fences and she couldn't see to drive. The doctor recommended cataract surgery which she was afraid of. She put it off for many years.....then she had it....and she said it was like a miracle. She could see better than she had in years, it wasn't painful....and she was mad at herself that she had waited so long.
So there you have the skinny on cataracts from the Queen of the West.
-
I love the NUDIE poster in the notes. That's the original design, is it not? I think it's just perfect.
-
I had all of the cult movie books in the late 1970s! They were my bible, and in 1980 or 1981, the Beacon Theatre had a cult movie festival. i was in heaven. All I remember now are SCHLOCK and ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES.
-
!!! 3 !!!
DR Elmore, you were very lucky to live within walking distance of the Thalia. (Isn't that the one Woody Allen featured in ANNIE HALL or others?) Of course we had plenty of revival houses in L.A., but as you know, everything is miles away from everything else, and must be driven to. Or be right on a bus line (as the Nuart was for me, before I had a car).
The main thing now, though, is not location, but the near total death of revival houses.
-
I posted a LI'L review on Amazon.
-
Jane, more moving vibes. I'm sure all will be fine in the end.
Thanks. Our internet just returned. It has been out since yesterday afternoon. The new owners are coming over today, much to do to make the house look presentable. I need to be pulling it about to pack, not make it orderly-groan.
Between 1979 and 1986, I went to four revival houses:
Carnegie Hall Cinema, where I first saw GIGI and Laurence Olivier's THE BEGGAR'S OPERA
The Thalia
The Regency, where I first saw THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE
Theatre 80 St. Mat's Place. were I first saw Bob Hope's THE CAT AND THE CANARY
I was going to skip what I have missed, however, I see I need to check up on a few people.
-
I remember the ads for First Nudie Musical, and I dimly recall seeing Cindy Williams on Mike Douglas talking about the movie, but I was under 17 at the time -- and that was not the kind of movie my parents would take me to. So, I had to wait until years later when I found a video store with a copy. I laughed so hard I remember being in tears. Need to find time to watch the DVD again.
BK, I hope to post my review by the weekend. It has just been insanely busy lately.
Mega vibes for the VixFamily.
On Saturday, I harvested more than 3 gallons of loquats from the tree in the backyard. That has had me pickling loquats in every free moment. I've seeded and preserved more than 2 gallons of them and I'm not finished. I have to do that tonight or the rest won''t be good.
It's been all loquats, work, dance practice, website work, sleep. Repeat.
My body doesn't like it.
-
It's one week until vacation and I feel like taking it now.
Healing vibes for Dan
The first time that I heard of TFNM was when my sister was either just dating the guy she eventually married (and divorced...hoo and ray!), or they were just married. He had a membership in a video store back when that's how you had to do it...VHS tapes for home viewing were still very new and you couldn't just rent one anywhere. This was a place where you had to join or pay a fee every month and you got to "rent" a certain number of tapes per week or month. He took the whole family in there so that he could show us around and I noticed a videotape with boobies illustrated as musical notes. I also saw that Cindy Williams was in the movie. THIS (http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/b5gAAOSweW5VKGdB/$_57.JPG) was the cover, but it was a VHS tape, not Betamax. I never got to rent the movie and it wasn't until BK released the original DVD that I actually saw it, but even way back then, I had (surprisingly) heard of it. :)
Fun postings and memories.
I'm up after who knows how much sleep. Maybe eight hours.
-
Elmore - Leila is Leila Davis and oh would I love to see her again. She was such a sweetheart. I probably haven't seen her for these forty years.
-
The musical notes poster was the original design by Paramount with one exception - the first version had NO credits at all. We had to threaten to sue them to get the credits added (all the credits on the poster were contractual and had to be there). We didn't like it at the time - not so much the design, which was fun, but the "At last" and "The Ultimate Take-off" lines - I got the intended humor but knew most people would think we were saying it was some kind of "ultimate" movie, which it wasn't and isn't. :)
-
Who'da thunk it? BK would start filming his movie on MY birthday? ;)
Well, the irony is that six years later we began shooting The Creature Wasn't Nice on Monday May 5th.
Here's a link to the two Amazon reviews. ChasSmith's is as delightful as Jrand's. I look forward to others' reviews. And who will be the first here to try making Margaret's Chicken? Including those recipes was really fun. http://www.amazon.com/Murder-at-Hollywood-Division/dp/1504904559/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1430853716&sr=1-1&keywords=murder+at+the+hollywood+division
I'm game. Don't know how soon I'll get to it, but get to it I shall.
But I'll tell you which of the recipes I'll be making FIRST, and eating every last one of them:
The peanut butter cookies.
BK:
I followed along on Google and Bing Maps, and was frankly amazed at how faithfully you described the block on Lexington. If it isn't a tightly held secret, I'd love to know how you found and decided on that particular block.
(Can't help but enjoy the image of someone innocently picking up a book to read, and finding their own small apartment building or house is one of the main locations...especially the scene of a serious crime.)
Do you have specific buildings in mind for Adriana's and Billy's apartments on Detroit and (I forget his street at the moment)? As I recall, you've always identified the block and let it go at that, but do you have particular places in mind?
The new owners are here. Keith is showing them what he missed last time. They have brought petunias to plant in the boxes on the deck. I can already tell what they purchased is not as pretty as the ones we normally buy. :)
Had intermittent internet travails not due to anything on my side, but all seems to be back now, at least.
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* HAPPY 40TH ANNIVERSARY TO BRUCE
& THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL!!!! :o :o :o :o
-
I may still have the FILMS & FILMING issue that had TFNM on its cover.
-
I also have the PLAYBOY SEX IN CINEMA paperback for either 1975 or 1976 that features TFNM as one of the notable films of the year.
-
The first time I saw TFNM was (I'm 99% certain) on Showtime, as that was the cable channel we were able to get in my area back in the late 70s/80s.
-
When I got to college, TFNM was my entree into the Midnight Movies genre as well as the delights of low budget/highly creative movies, a majority of which are still better and have stood the test of time than a majority of studio product.
-
The first time I rented a VHS of TFNM was through Palmer Video which was my preferred video store even when Blockbuster horned in. Palmer had lots of foreign, cultish, obscure and naughty videos that the mainstream and scrubbed clean Blockbuster would never touch. I even had to rent the VHS player in those days when I was a fledgling movie renter.
I went through a lot of blocks in Hollywood before settling on that particular one. I wanted it east of Vine and I wanted it to have a certain seediness. It was trial and error on Google first, but then driving around until I found it. Adriana's apartment building on Detroit is a very specific building, yes - the gal who played Joyce in The Brain at LACC still lives there, I believe. :) Billy's is specific, too - I chose it by driving around that neighborhood until I found one I liked. It's actually kind of near where Alet Taylor lived when she was in LA.
-
Lunch meeting in thirty minutes. I'm hungry - I'm thinking of having my Cobb salad, but with oil and vinegar. Cobb salad without dressing is really low in calories, like under four hundred - but I slather on so much 1000-Island it probably ends up being over 1500 calories. With a tiny bit of oil and mostly vinegar it stays under 400.
-
Looks like the book arrived yesterday, and we just picked it up from the mailroom today.
The recipes look delicious, as doe the book.
-
Only 10 more days left! Where is the frantic face to put after that last statement-lol
Just got the official news from the surgeon: the biopsy was negative of everything and was just your normal everyday tissue. HOORAY!
DR Dan I am extremely happy for you!
-
And I am home from a wonderful ZORBA rehearsal at City Center. It's heartbreaking, funny, and quite wonderful: the orchestra produces magic under the legerdemain of Maestro Rob Berman, I very much liked the direction and choreography and the cast is quite wonderful. Zoe Wanamaker, whose fragility, comedy and pathos moves me to tears could be our next Lotte Lenya; she's very musical for an actress in her first musical role, and her "Happy Birthday" dance to death is so moving/
Our other actor making his musical debut, John Turturro, is also going to surprise people. I imagine Zorba as burly rather than thin, but he's really quite good. Santino Fontana and Marin Mazzie are both quite fine as well. My friend Robert Montano has a nice role as one of Robert Cuccioli's sons. It's gonna be good.
Just got the official news from the surgeon: the biopsy was negative of everything and was just your normal everyday tissue. HOORAY!
This calls for a partay!
-
Oh man. That all sounds incredible, DR Elmore.
-
THANK YOU! ELMORE, FJL, JRAND64, CHASSMITH, and JANE! :)
A partay would be wonderful! A lot of anxiety has been lifted.
Now my next step is on the 20th for my pre-surgical tests.
Then, the big surgery on June 16th, which will be around 5 hours in duration. I'm sure I will be in the hospital for a handful of days.
-
John Turturro as Zorba, he's a good actor and can be very convincing. Maybe he'll originate a series of thin Zorbas, since everyone automatically sees Anthony Quinn, who fooled many people into thinking he really was Greek, after his Guns of Navarone role and the Zorba role.
-
Thank you everyone for your continued good vibes for health!
-
Oh man. That all sounds incredible, DR Elmore.
Can you pick up an extra Playbill for me on Sunday?
-
Sure. But feel free to remind me again! :)
DR Dan M - I am utterly thrilled at your good medical news. Huzzah!!!!!!!
Wishing DR George a very, very joyous celebration today, and all good health and happiness throughout the coming year.
Back from the lunch meeting. Had the Cobb salad with basically vinegar, which was surprisingly tasty, and a bagel. So, very low-cal luncheon.
I think I first watched TFNM on videocassette when I first came on HHW around 2006. Loved it. Next watched it several times on DVD (to get the commentaries, etc.). Have the Blu-Ray, but haven't watched it in that format yet. I think it is time to get re-acquainted.
Happy Anniversary to "The First Nudie Musical"
-
Tonight we are going to a salon (said in my best faux French accent). A house concert w/light supper in a grand old mansion. It is close enough that we'll be able to walk.
-
I can already tell what they purchased is not as pretty as the ones we normally buy. :)
It is very hard to let go, especially of a place we have loved and that has meant so much to us.
-
Hi all. Well, I'm writing to you from Union City, CA. Back in the East Bay. I'm happy with the move. If was necessary as I couldn't justify spending more than 1/2 my monthly income on rent. It's a little farther away from things, but farther away can be a good thing sometimes.
That's all I have for now. But only for now.
-
My beautiful goddaughter Charlotte has a part in a movie shooting downtown today.
Just got the official news from the surgeon: the biopsy was negative of everything and was just your normal everyday tissue. HOORAY!
Jane, you did so much work before putting your house on the market that I'd thought you were done with the clearing out and had "only" the packing left. Sorry you have so much work left. I do know the pressure. Marvelous Matt helped me before my move from Virginia, plus I had the movers do much of the packing, but I always prefer to do as much as possible ahead of time. It's much harder, of course, when your stuff has multiple destinations, ie, some to storage and some to one's car, etc. I sent many boxes ahead to my temporary housing via UPS. Not cheap, but I couldn't lug it all around with me.
Tonight we are going to a salon (said in my best faux French accent). A house concert w/light supper in a grand old mansion. It is close enough that we'll be able to walk.
Envy, envy, envy. Such a wealth of cultural events!
-
Wishing DR George a very, very joyous celebration today, and all good health and happiness throughout the coming year.
Thanks, Ron!
-
Just before I left, a longtime record collector dropped by with a check - he doesn't do the Internet but wanted to contribute to the campaign - $500 he gave.
That's great, BK!
Has DR George eaten took much cake and gotten a sugar high?
Nope...the only actual sugar that I've had (so far) is a Brown & Haley Peanut Butter Mountain Bar that I got from a co-worker. One of my staff gave me a little bag of Lindt/Lindor assorted chocolate truffles. I'll be saving those for later. ;)
Happy Birthday, George!
Thanks, Laura!
Post deleted. I'm off to bed; I have to be up early for my TB test.
Just got the official news from the surgeon: the biopsy was negative of everything and was just your normal everyday tissue. HOORAY!
:)
-
I can already tell what they purchased is not as pretty as the ones we normally buy. :)
It is very hard to let go, especially of a place we have loved and that has meant so much to us.
Harder for Keith who has truly made it beautiful and kept the grounds near perfection.
-
Boy, did I need the walk we just took to de-stress.
-
Hi all. Well, I'm writing to you from Union City, CA. Back in the East Bay. I'm happy with the move. If was necessary as I couldn't justify spending more than 1/2 my monthly income on rent. It's a little farther away from things, but farther away can be a good thing sometimes.
That's all I have for now. But only for now.
Enjoy your new home. It sounds like you made a wise decision to move.
:) Nice photo too.
DR Dan M - I am utterly thrilled at your good medical news. Huzzah!!!!!!!
Yes, it's great. Now on to hernia repair with the colorectal bariatric oncologic surgeon!
Normal & everyday are just the words you needed to hear - congratulations!
Thank you DR Ginny! Yes, it's the kind of news that's good when it's negative.
We cleaned and and purged much of our stuff, however, we did not know that we were downsizing the house. Most of all, I didn't know we would lose soooo much kitchen space. We also didn't know that food or liquids could not go into storage.
Great news, DR Dan M!!!!
Thank you KevinH! 8)
Wonderful news, Dan M!
Yes, and a lifter of lots of anxiety! Thanks!
Thank you DR Druxy! I was on Amazon this afternoon and couldn't believe the reviews by people that didn't get the Harry Pennypacker book. What a bunch or maroons, as Bugs Bunny would say!
Here's a mug I just saw on eBay:
On Saturday, I harvested more than 3 gallons of loquats from the tree in the backyard. That has had me pickling loquats in every free moment. I've seeded and preserved more than 2 gallons of them and I'm not finished. I have to do that tonight or the rest won''t be good.
It's been all loquats, work, dance practice, website work, sleep. Repeat.
My body doesn't like it.
I read locusts
I couldn't imagine WHAT John was thinking of pickling them
Oh Dan what a blessing! I am thrilled to read this!!!
Well, it's time for me to leave work and go to Red Robin for dinner with my friend Margo. I have their Red Royalty rewards card, so I get a free burger! I'm sure that Margo will pick up the rest of the dinner tab...but I won't assume that she will. ::)
;)
Until later!
Enjoy your birthday dinner George
Thank you all for the vibes. SIL tells us that mum came through surgery well and was resting
40 years ago I was 17 but looked 14 There was no sneaking into r rated movies for me even if I had wanted to
I remember hearing bits and pieces of the show whispered by the cool kids In high school who did sneak in but I never saw it until after I joined this site and former DR WFO lent me his VHS copy
The concert was really great - a harpsichord and all authentic baroque string instruments - about six players in all. And the mansion was gorgeous! Great food and wine, too.
Another crazy evening.
I would like to ask y'all for some HHW vibes for my friend Carol, who has been hospitalized for a couple of days after suffering what she thought were heart attack pains. They don't know what's wrong, which is why they're keeping her for tests, etc.
And good night, all.
Vibes for Carol.
MeTV is playing one of the Twilight Zone episodes that give me nightmares when I was younger. "The Midnight Sun" in which the Earth is moving closer to the Sun, but of course there's that twist at the conclusion.
-
I like that episode.
-
Many of the best TW episodes are made so well. That they each are in their own, self-contained world that has an internal logic, no matter how far-fetched, and a sense of claustrophobia.
-
It's like a once-in-a-lifetime congruence of really solid acting, set design, photography, writing and music. TW has its dud episodes, but even those have some interest.
-
When I was at Cornell, I had wanted to go to nearby Ithaca College to attend the occasional lecture series held by Serling's widow Carol, but never did the schedule fit mine. All of Serling's works were bequeathed to IC as it was his alma mater. Any episode of the TW set in a small town is Serling's tribute to his childhood in the upstate New York southern tier from Syracuse down through the Binghamton-Elmira area which he had much fondness for all of his all-too-short life.
-
Enjoy your birthday dinner George
Thanks, Vixmom! I did. And Margo DID pick up the check for my dinner...and since I my burger was free because of my rewards card, she only had to pay for my diet Coke. We were both happy with dinner. ;D
