Well, you've read the notes in 3D, you've smelled the notes in Smell-o-Vision, and now it is time to post until the smelly 3D cows come home.
-
First post huzzah!
-
Now let's see:
GOOD JOB VIBES to absent DR Jed! Yes, DRANN, it does sound perfect for him!
I am sorry that I do not like Mr Chevaliar as much as others do. Oh, I do LOVE Jeanette MacDonald! And it is not that I do not think he is untalented - he has some lovely moments in GIGI - "I Remember It Well" is probably one of the most perfectly filmed and performed songs EVER. I just don't like his face....so there you are. Sorry if I made anyone upset.
-
DRJOSE you will glad to know that Miss Allison Hayes NEVER lived in Houston! Of course you are lucky that I already have photographs of the house she lived in when she was a little girl in DC!!
DRJAY - I have a bit of time left on the video - would you like to see Miss Frances Farmer's appearance on THIS IS YOUR LIFE from 1958?
-
From the 1930's:
Well I will start with the plays I wish were magically on DVD with their original Broadway casts:
The Women
Golden Boy
The Little Foxes
The Philadelphia Story
and a 5th show to be named later.
On to musicals:
-
Girl Crazy
Anything Goes
DuBarry Was a Lady
The Boys from Syracuse
Knickerbocker Holiday
-
A new edition of STRANGE WINE.
Well, at the risk of repeating anything DRCHARLES POGUE may have written, Mr Harlan Ellison is a writer of such imagination, that any DR who hasn't cracked one of his books should rush right out and get one. His volumes THE GLASS TEAT and THE GLASS TEAT 2 are still unmatched works in television criticism. Mr CP, please mention that I have yet to read his thoughts on BRACKEN'S WORLD....
-
The clerk might not be able to find it, but this book is aptly named:
;D
-
I will stop now.
-
Hehehe I am back.
Funny sign out front at the Mooresville Church of the Nazarene (of all places):
"Carrying a grudge is like taking poison and waiting for the other guy to die."
-
If you have your 3-D glasses - click on the link to see the
Venus de Milo in 3-D!!! ;D
Pic was a bit large to post on the site....hence the link! 8)

I'm back.
When I was young(er) - I always watched all the movies on TV. And now sometimes I think because I saw a movie when I was a tyke - I saw the movie.
I am watching GENTLEMAN JIM on TCM right now - haven't watched it in years. What a terrific show. Errol Flynn, Alexis Smith, William Frawley, Alan Hale, Jack Carson. Flynn certainly was great looking and what a great sense of humor in his playing.
-
First off good job vibes to DR Jed! ~~~~~~~~~~
-
Second, wow, so many posts to read about customer service.
I will say this, I actually agree with various things that everyone said. I think that it's important to treat the customers well. But I also think that some customers can be unreasonable. But I still think it's important to be as nice as possible to those customers.
As for firing the employees, I would never want that. Not even for the guy a few weeks ago who was a bit rude.
I like DR SWW's idea of writing a letter. I don't think I will do that now, but I will keep it in mind.
The funny part though about the boxes (for the jewelry), which I might not have made clear. There are probably 500 little boxes with other discount jewelry just sitting out on the shelves right in front of the cash. I often just take one of those myself, if I have a lot of stuff. It's sort of stupid on the clerk's part to make a big deal about not having boxes when there were hundreds just feet away.
Oh and one other time a clerk said she didn't have a box ( i forgot about that). But she was so lovely and offered to put each item in little individual jewelry bags so my stuff wouldn't get tangled or broken.
So I suppose I would have accepted not having a box, if the women hadn't just said, "sorry no boxes" (and then turned away like she couldn't have cared less about my request).

Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday 10/31... you get an extra hour for "Trick or Treaters".
-
DRJAY - I have a bit of time left on the video - would you like to see Miss Frances Farmer's appearance on THIS IS YOUR LIFE from 1958?
Why, I ask you, not? I'm looking forward to receiving this video!
-
Or something DR WEL.
-
LOL.....you got it!
-
30's musicals I wish I could see - live - might include
DuBarry Was a Lady
Porgy and Bess
I'd Rather Be Right
The Cradle Will Rock
The Cat and the Fiddle
The longest running musical of the 1930's was performed by a cast of non-professionals (Pins and Needles). It's a show I dearly love, but one imagines that it would be more fun to see the performances of legendary stars.
For me, this is a time capsule question. I don't like seeing any stage musical on DVD or video. Just as poetry is exactly that which cannot be translated, musical theatre performance involves connecting with a live audience, and, if you're not part of that audience (i.e., you're watching it, much later, on a TV screen), you're missing a major part of what makes it wonderful
-
Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday 10/31... you get an extra hour for "Trick or Treaters".
Actually, the 31st will be the first night it gets dark "early," since we adjust the clocks at 2:00 a.m.
-
My five most wanted DVDs not currently available:
ANOTHER THIN MAN (I want all the rest of them, but as this is my favorite, I'll just put it down and leave the other spots for other films)
EASTER PARADE
DARLING LILI
FLOWER DRUM SONG
BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK
-
30s musicals I'd love to have on video:
GIRL CRAZY
ANYTHING GOES
ON YOUR TOES
OF THEE I SING
ROBERTA
-
Glad DR MBarnum and others noticed Charlie Ruggles' physique in LOVE ME TONIGHT. When I first watched it months ago, that really took me my total surprise.
-
Wow! A 3DDVD! I love the sound. It's like a gay couple owning a house and being homocohomeowners.
I slept late this morning. Between DRS Jane and PennyO and my friend Ginny I've walked way too much this week, and my body was sagging by noon yesterday. I had a wonderful dinner with Ginny at 41 East 19th(?) last night (can't remember the restaurant, Kraft, maybe?), after meeting her in Union Square at 5 pm. I was home by 8:45 in time to post and watch the debate.
The 5 DVDs I want:
FLOWER DRUM SONG
LI'L ABNER
CINDERELLA (Disney)
TALES OF HOFFMANN (Michael Powell; Criterion announced it several years ago)
OH, WHAT A LOVELY WAR! (still very relevant)
The other topic was shows from the 1930s to now, so I'd ask for:
JUBILEE (1935), since it's currently my speculative edition, I'd like to know what it actually looked and sounded like in 1935.
CAROUSEL, John Raitt, Jan Clayton, Reuben Mamoulian and a 40-piece orchestra, it must have been glorious.
THE GOLDEN APPLE, Kaye Ballard and an amazing cast, this is a show deserving a City Opera revival; I'm tired of seeing it with two pianos.
FLAHOOLEY, because it had Barbara Cook and it's so weird!
CANDIDE (1956) because it starred Barbara Cook and Irra Petina and it's still the best version of too many.
The two more I'd realy like:
THREEPENNY OPERA, Charlotte Rae, Bea Arthur, Jo Sullivan, John Astin, etc. what a cast! It's too bad the Blitzstein lyrics were cleaned up for the recording, which might have made it the definite one.
SHE LOVES ME, because it starred Barbara Cook, and it's a great show, which the Roundabout revival wasn't.
-

My preference for the Blitzstein translation got me in deep trouble with Kushner.
It's pretty amazing, isn't it?, how many actors who'd been in the Theatre-de-lys production of Threepenny went on to play leads on hit TV series...
Charlotte Rae, Bea Arthur, John Astin, Jerry Orbach, Ed Asner
Now, as I type this, I'm not so sure Asner was in it during its record-setting run
-
...I've walked way too much this week, and my body was sagging by noon yesterday.
Consider yourself lucky. My body sags even when I haven't done any walking at all.
Gravity can be so heartlessly cruel!
-
Well DRJAY on its way to you - probably arriving Wednesday thanks to Christopher Columbus - a video. On it are:
COUNT THREE AND PRAY - Columbia 1955. Allison is fifth billed and has her best role in a mainstream film. Starring Van Heflin and featuring Joanne Woodward in her motion picture debut. With Phil Carey, Jean Willes, and Raymond Burr.
BACHELOR FATHER - supposed to be a comedy, not sure after watching this episode. Allison plays Kelly's boss at Yellowstone Park (actually the Universal backlot - there's that waterfall!).
77 SUNSET STRIP - Gerald Lloyd Kookson III is now a partner in the firm and he and Roger Smith investigate a murder and some gun runners. Allison plays MaryAnn Winston, wears some sharp clothes, and drives a
B I G car!
FORD THEATRE MOMENT OF DECISION "Fate Travels East" - Miss Linda Darnell is a busybody on a cross country train. Allison is a movie star married to Sheb Wooley....and commercials by Tennessee Ernie Ford!
THE MILLIONAIRE - Tom Drake is a doctor, Allison is his wealthy lady love, who obviously buys her clothes at Frederick's of Hollywood!
Miss Frances Farmer returning to show business and singing up a storm on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW + being "feted" on THIS IS YOUR LIFE. A couple of times, it looks like she is going to slug Ralph Edwards, I think he is lucky to have escaped with his toupee on his head!
ENJOY!!!
-
elmore got it right - it's not JUST the 30s, it's the 30s to now. So, any decade from then till now.
-
I've confirmed Asner. Add Jerry Stiller. And Paul Dooley. Now I'm not sure if Dooley starred in a series. He turns up on Curb Your Enthusiam with some frequency, though.
-
If you like your comedy dry, bordering on the absurd, go see I [Heart] Huckabees, Mr. David O. Russell's new film. The story kicks off with Mr. Jason Schwartzman's character hiring a pair of "existential detectives," in the form of Miss Lily Tomlin and Mr. Dustin Hoffman, to help explain a series of coincidences that Schwartzman recently experienced. It's a roller coaster of brilliantly clever vignettes from there to the end of the film. There's a large and outstanding cast, with quite a few notable cameo appearances. Miss Tomlin and Mr. Hoffman are particularly delicious, as is, believe it or not, Mr. Mark Wahlberg, who becomes Mr. Schwartzman's buddy. Mr. Jude Law, Miss Naomi Watts and Miss Isabelle Huppert all make considerable contributions to the fun as well.

My preference for the Blitzstein translation got me in deep trouble with Kushner.
Now, as I type this, I'm not so sure Asner was in it during its record-setting run
Well, Kushner should remember a few things:
1. The current text of DREIGROSCHENOPER developed after the 1928 production as Brecht became more of a socialist while he socked away his money in Swiss banks.
2. The Theatre de Lys production had to be cut because it ran so long, and this is what went into the Tams-Witmark (now it's with Rodgers & Hammerstein) rentals.
3. Blitzstein's adaptation, while not always literal or blatant, is quite funny (she reclined on her asp) and gets its points across in a subtler manner than other more literal translations.
4. Blitzstein's lyrics sing.
5. Some things in Blitzstein's adaptation, such as Lucy's doing the Barbara Song, may actually have happened in 1928 Berlin. Pirate Jenny went to Lenya, not Polly, because Lenya owned it after the Pabst film.
On to Ed Asner, I think he was a replacement, and I swear Estelle Parsons may have been as well. Jane Connell was also one of the Mrs Peachum replacements.
-
I made some of those points, Elmore, but he was extremely suspicious of anyone who dared disagree with him, and began suggesting that I was too far to the right, politically, as evidenced by - wait for it - my love of musical comedy!
-

In the immortal words of Dorothy Parker, you can lead a horticulture, but you can't make her think!
Accusing Blizstein, by inference, as too far to the right is so funny! Oy!
-
My brain - which was assaulted in a meeting yesterday - is not totally in the functioning mode today, so I'll just agree with all the selections for the TOD and tag along to see them with you all. 'kay?
-
My brain has been assaulted a lot lately too. (It's midterm season!) And yet, surprisingly, I am out of futon before noon on a Saturday.
-
Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday 10/31... you get an extra hour for "Trick or Treaters".
Actually, the kids tend to lose an hour for trick or treating because it gets dark earlier.
-
Well...I misread the notes, but I will stick with my choices....
Never should read the notes BEFORE I go to bed.
-
DRNoel, I wanted to add that Marc Blitzstein's biographer Eric Gordon is a friend of mine, and thinking of either him or Blitzstein as too far right is mind-boggling. Joe McCarthy, or his current replacements in the far right regime, would be delighted to watch them, gay men and extreme liberals, fry.
It's my memory from Eric's bio, that the original dress of THREEPENNY OPERA lasted over 4 hours, leading to drastic cuts. I've always meant to see if the Kurt Weill Foundation has that original text. Also, whose translation did Kushner favor? Stefan Brecht, who went through school on the Blitzstein royalties, favors Michael Feingold's, I believe.
Also, I don't know how many DRs are recipients of the R&H newsletter HAPPY TALK, but there were some dates given for some nice future events:
In December, PBS' Great Performances will broadcast CINDERELLA (1957), hosted by Julie Andrews. Image Entertainment will release the DVD then.
This month will see the release of several musical theatre tomes:
1. BROADWAY MUSICALS: 101 GREATEST SHOWS OF ALL TIME by Ken Bloom and Frank Vlastnik
2. BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL by Laurence Maslon, a tie-in with the PBS series.
-
My brain has been assaulted a lot lately too. (It's midterm season!) And yet, surprisingly, I am out of futon before noon on a Saturday.
Then you'll need to run to the store to get some more futon. And while you're there, pick up some Cherry Coke!
-

Ha ha ha. Actually, I have been out of Cherry Coke for several days now. Thank goodness for the Quickie Mart across the street from my school. I don't know how I'm going to survive the weekend, though. I have to write a 6-7 page paper on Hamlet with NO CHERRY COKE! :o
-
At the mo', I can only come up with two movies that I want to see released on DVD: Reds and An Unmarried Woman.
As for musicals with original casts on DVD:
Gypsy
Anyone Can Whistle
Cabaret
Company
Follies
-
In lieu of our discussion yesterday about Eddie Sauter, I've been listening this morning to the Julie Andrews CINDERELLA CD, along with the later Leslie Ann Warren one. In the latter broadcast, Johnny Green was the musical supervisor and orchestrator, and it's interesting to hear - when still using a few original 1957 Robert Russell Bennett charts - how he fiddles with them, and doesn't necessarily improve them, by adding little touches, like the harp glissando at the end of the Gavotte and the strange coda to the Cinderella March.
I worked with Johnny Green on a PBS Gershwin tribute around 1988, just before he died. He was a crusty old man, didn't get along with everyone, and I adored him. We had a good working relationship, but I didn't know enough about his career at the time to ask questions I'd like to ask him now. Rest in peace, Johnny, I loved you.

DRSandra, you need major drugs!

Who doesn't?

Yesterday, who mentioned the new Ethan Mordden book? Send me a private message and we'll dish.

"TheCustomer is always right" is an axiom. Of course the customer isn't ALWAYS right, as we've read several samples of horrors right here.
But in Jennifer's case, there is no question, based on her account, that she was treated badly.
YES! The clerk should be dismissed, axed, fired. She has NO BUSINESS dealing with customers. It doesn't matter what kind of day she has had. It would be acceptable if she was a bit slower, for some reason, than she should be. It would be acceptable if she dropped something, or had difficulty ringing up the sale. But to make snide suggestions that she could refund money rather than trouble herself to find a box is outrageous. She is there to serve the customer and to make the shopping experience as pleasing as possible. She wasn't even pleasant toward Jennifer.
The trouble in our North American culture today is that we've become too "concerned" about the welfare of those who aren't adept at their jobs or studies. It has become incorrect to "fail" a student who doesn't do the work or have the aptitude to move ahead. Do each of you believe you would graciously walk away feeling sorry for a salesperson who was rude to you and basically treated you as though you were not a valuable customer? If so, you've been conditioned badly. IMO. Tolerance of such bad mannered ineptness will only encourage more of the same.
If she, or any waiter, or other type of clerk believe they have the right to impose their attitudes or moods on customers, they should not be in that business.
Firing them is a blessing...primarily for the store, secondarily for the customer, and ultimately for the incompetent sales person who should be in some other line of work.
It's not easy "serving" well...those who do are treasures. Those who don't need to find other employment.
Rant over....
:D
-
I've just returned from Barnes & Noble and purchasing Ethan Mordden's new book as well as a new history of Off-Off-Broadway in the 60's called PLAYING UNDERGROUND by Stephen Bottoms. The PBS tie-in by Laurence Maslon is also in the store, and the Ken Bloom-Frank Vlastik book is on order. There's also a new book on Jerry Herman by Stephen Citron that I'll pick up later this week.
-
Ethan's book on the 1920s musicals did not stay in print very long.
-
Top 5 movies I would love to see on DVD:
STORM WARNING
FLOWER DRUM SONG
MURDER IN THE BLUE ROOM
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1962 Hammer version)
QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE
-
BTW, if Ethan is looking for a new subject for his next theater tome, he should do an expanded version of the wonderful discography at the back of BRAODWAY BABIES. That's my vfaorite part of that book. I also loved the capsule album comments at the back of Stanley Green's THE WORLD OF MUSICAL COMEDY.
We need an updated book that would include all of the new musicals of the 1990s to the present. Kurt Gantzel's MUSICAL THEATER ON RECORD is now out of date.
-
I got the feeling after reading Hugh Fordin's book on the Arthur Freed Unit at MGM that Johnny Green was not well liked there despite his obvious gifts. Or maybe the people Hugh interviewed were simply jealous of Johnny's success.
-
Well, after reading Fordin's book on the Freed Unit, I wanted to see all the movies, some of which I think are rather horrifyingly over the top today, except for tHE PIRATE which is over the top in a very baroque and amusing way. Then I read about Arthur Freed's exposing himself to a young Shirley Temple, and I'm forming new opinions about his sliminess!
Johnny was a tough old bird when I knew him, and I think there were many battles in his long career. Whenever I think of him now, I listen to his recordings from the 30s with Fred Astaire, and appreciate his talents and kindness to me.
Speaking of moving listening, I just listened to Edward Elgar's SEA PICTURES, and the song cycle moves me to tears by its Edwardian beauty! I like the way he plays on the tonality of C and E minor and the way he connects the 5 songs by melodic fragments and figures.
Now a bit of gossip: I just received a postcard from DRTomovoz, who sends his regards to all you DRs, especially Danise, Jane, and BK since he didn't have addresses to send you cards.
-
I've confirmed Asner. Add Jerry Stiller. And Paul Dooley. Now I'm not sure if Dooley starred in a series. He turns up on Curb Your Enthusiam with some frequency, though.
Paul Dooley was indeed the lead in a series, called "Coming of Age" co-starring my personal favorite, Miss Phyllis Newman. They (along with Alan Young and the lovely Miss Glynis Johns) played next door neighbors in a retirement community in Sun City, AZ. The series didn't last long, but it was often quite funny. Or at least I recall it being quite funny.
I also believe he recreated his role from "Breaking Away" in the short lived TV series which was based upon the film.
-
Just sitting here looking at my library's website forsome books that I saw today at Chapters. So far they have a few that I want, which is good. It's much cheaper than buying the books!

Is it bad to eat the food that you bought for dinner at 3:30pm? :)
And is it bad if you are already hungry again at 4:30pm? :)

Good Afternoon!
Sorry to have been errant and truant all day. I took my time getting up and getting ready this morning before playing the matinee of THE PRODUCERS this afternoon...
WHEW!!!
I can breathe again! I've never felt so "glad" for a show to be over. Of course, I have one more show to play tomorrow afternoon, but now that I've gotten my "trial by fire" over with... I did rather well. I missed a "whip cue", and some of the timings were different today due to some understudies and swings... But the "exposed" stuff went rather well. Of course, some of the easy stuff ended up tripping me up... ah, well...
OK... Just wanted to check in for now... I'm heading over to Steve's for some dinner...
Laters...
-
Might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone?
-
Is it Chinese food?
No, but now I will probably be craving me some General Taos!
I have been eating way too much and not exercising enough. So I am now on my 6th day of the 14 day Atkins cleansing. It is VERY restrictive (only 20 carbs or less per day). But you totally cleanse your body. And I feel really good.
And btw, I tried the Atkins wrap the other day (with grilled chicken and the atkins honey & mustard dressing). And it was SO GOOD.
-
Wrote me a couple of pages and now perhaps I'll take me a little swim in my little pool.
-
DR Elmore, I must clear up some minor confusion. Kushner was not accusing Blitzstein of being too far to the right. He was accusing ME of being too far to the right because I preferred the Blitzstein translation of Threepenny (and toiled in the "lull-the-bougeois-into-complacency" field of musical theatre). I don't know which translation he preferred, but he was pretty close to some East German immigrant who'd work with Brecht late in BB's life.
-
Btw, the guy who lives next door is getting snow removal services this winter! That means no more him using his snow plow tractor and putting all his snow in front of my drive-way. Yeah!
-
Kristin Chenoweth will have a major recurring role on The West Wing:

My brain has been assaulted a lot lately too.
Well, my brain has not been assaulted.... but I wish my body were! :o :o ;D

This morning I went for a walk, and this is what I saw:
-
And this:
-
It's my memory from Eric's bio, that the original dress of THREEPENNY OPERA lasted over 4 hours, leading to drastic cuts.
"Are we talking musicals or fashion here??"
Signed:

And this:
-
I've just returned from Barnes & Noble
Boy, I sure hope the salesperson was correct, polite, helpful, curteous, knowledgeable, presentable, personable and able to you!
Because, we are a few Hainsies and Kimlets here who could give him/her a lesson and have him/her fired!
Let it be known!
If he's/she's not with us, she's/he's against us! :( ;)
Meanwhile... everything's beautiful in the rest of the world!
-

Oh, my gosh, I remember that show...back in the late 80s or 90s wasnt' it? Anyway it was funny, but quickly was off the air.
-
Might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone?
We're all gone shopping and checking if clerks do their job properly; otherwise, we'll have them fired, you hear!
We sure are not going to put up with that kind of terrorism! No sir! 8)
-
Just finished talking to director Maury Dexter..doing the second part of the interview. What a nice guy....talked about Bobby Vinton, Sonny and Cher, Kent Taylor, George Montgomery, and the cast of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE (he directed that show). Fun interview...but now I have 3 hours worth of audio tape to transcribe, which is the part I hate! LOL!
-
No, but now I will probably be craving me some General Taos!
Good old General!
Where is he fighting now?
North Corea?
-
Btw, the guy who lives next door is getting snow removal services this winter! That means no more him using his snow plow tractor and putting all his snow in front of my drive-way. Yeah!
You should get him FIRED!
I mean... evicted! ;)

but he was pretty close to some East German immigrant who'd work with Brecht late in BB's life.
Hummm....
Him too had an affair with Brigitte Bardot! ::)
-
This morning I went for a walk, and this is what I saw:
And... obviously... it saw you too! ;D
-
Dear Friend BK, perhaps they're all seeing this new film TARNATION, which got great reviews in New York.
-
I was just about to say that as well DRFRANCOIS...LOL. Oh my what BIG eyes you have, little bird!
-
Well Iwill tell you where I have been. I have been watching my DVD of Claude LeLouch's film LES UNS ET LES AUTRES.
Oh my....I enjoyed this LONG film very much. Everyone does a nice job - the music is wonderful - both the original and the adapted. Geraldine Chaplin is especially good in her roles, but everyone is good.
Thanks for letting us know about it MRBK.
-
YAY!!! Just filled the LAST part (oboe/english horn) for my pit for "The Secret Garden" that I'm conducting (feeblely, I'm sure!) Now, to get the ancient Yamaha DX-7's programmed so they somewhat resemble the instruments William Brohn had envisioned!!! Oh, the fun never stops - especially in 3D!
-
Jrand, was it letterboxed?
-
Hi. :) I’m home. I had an absolute blast in NY! Everything was perfect. :D
Let me read a bit here and catch up. I will return later.
-
We want and expect and need and demand and would like to have a full report.

We want and expect and need and demand and would like to have a full report.
Speak for yourself! :o ??? ;D

Jrand, was it letterboxed?
No, it was jitterbugged! ???

I am doing a double header today, Dear Readers. I have just returned from a matinee performance of the New York City Ballet. I've freshened up a bit and will be heading out momentarily to meet a friend for dinner before we go to the Pasadena Symphony's season-opening concert tonight. It's an all (Richard) Strauss program, and guest soloist Miss Jane Eaglen will be singing The Four Last Songs as well as the Final Scene from Salome.
I'll provide a full report on both events when I get home tonight.
In the meanwhile, I remain yours, yours, yours.
-
I have just returned from a matinee performance of the New York City Ballet. I've freshened up a bit
You mean.... you're in that Corps de Ballet too! :o
Wow! That IS just tutu! :D

I quickly read the posts for the last few days. If I missed commenting on important news please email me.
CharlesPogue have you been busy today with a new family member?
Panni good luck getting with the house you applied for. I hope you get a chance to visit your cousin Jano.
Jennifer-great news about the neighbor, unless the service continues the practice of sending the snow your way. ;)
I guess I will have to begin watching WEST WING again. Better yet, please let me know when she is on and I will watch that episode.
Ann congratulations on your new part time job. :D It sounds very rewarding.
Good job vibes to Jed!!
elmore what was the photo on the postcard from Tomovoz?
It is such a pleasure to return to DRLaura’s beautiful photos. :)
-
elmore what was the photo on the postcard from Tomovoz?
The postcard was a series of small shots of l'Auberge de Castel-Merle in Perigord.

Francois, close your eyes-full report on its way. ;D
Tuesday:
I arrived at the Wellington in the late afternoon only to find, as in Bethesda, they had central heat and it wasn’t turned on. Feeling sorry for me as I was very cold, not only did I get 4 extra blankets but I was upgraded to a suite. The same sitting room elmore, Penny and I enjoyed a nice visit after our Wednesday night dinner.
After checking into my room I took my first subway ride to my nieces 4th floor apartment in the West Village area before going to a Thai restaurant. Since it was on the way back to their place, we stopped at Magnolias and picked up dessert. Jose did you mention the banana pudding? I liked the devils food cupcake with the cream cheese frosting.
-
The postcard sounds pretty.
-
Welcome back, Jane!
-
The postcard sounds pretty.
Well, DRJane, maybe I'll send it to you! :-*

Wednesday:
I met my good friend from Pennsylvania and her son at the Port Authority. I forgot the name of the unusual deli near the Gershwin Theater we ate lunch at. DiT, if I recall correctly you suggested it to me. I’m sorry if I’m wrong about that. I had so many wonderful suggestions I’m not sure whose it was. We did have very good blintzes.
Following lunch we walked around a bit and I purchased a scarf to keep me warm before heading over to the beautiful Gershwin where we settled into our very comfortable 6th row center seats. WICKED may have been long but we never noticed. WOW! The show was absolutely fantastic. I may have been the first one up for a standing ovation, not easy feat since I pulled something in my hip while moving my suitcase on the train.
-
Thank you Panni.
elmore-okay. :D
-
The Broadway shows I wish were available on DVD: My Fair Lady, Camelot, Mame, She Loves Me, Follies.
-
Jane,
Let me know when I can open my eyes AGAIN... because this is pretty inconvenient for me!! LOL!
Welcome back, Jane!
-
Jose did you mention the banana pudding?
No! You know him: he never ever says anything about food here! :D
-
The postcard sounds pretty.
You mean... it's musical??
I WANT one too, just like that!
-
Wednesday night:
Following WICKED I parted with my friends and rushed over to the BARRYMORE full of anticipation to meet elmore, Ben and Noel. And of course to see Penny again, who went the wrong way on the subway making her a wee bit late. She arrived just after elmore said Penny wouldn’t get lost-but I knew better. ;D
I am very sorry Ben and Noel couldn’t have joined us at my hotel. Noel was the first to leave so we could talk about him-how nice and sweet he is. Penny & I agree with elmore, Noel is really cute and his avatar doesn’t do him justice. Then we noticed he quietly left extra money on the table, treating us all to drinks. Noel, a belated thank you and it was a delight meeting you. I look forward to next time, hopefully with Joy.
It was just as delightful meeting Ben who also remembered to bring photos of Anthony’s doll house which Penny and I spent a good amount of time admiring. He also did a great job of arranging the evening for us, making it a very special night.
I hope to post the photos my Monday. I haven’t a clue how they turned out.
-
Photos, yes, photos.
Welcome back, Gunther.
Shortly I'll be on my way to some place called Spark here in the City of Studio to meet Vinnie and his ever lovin' Stefanie.

Vinnie has a girl? That is fantastic! Tell him he's the best.
-
The girl is our LA cellist and contractor - Stefanie Fife - do you remember her?
Jane, we really missed you and so glad you're back.
-
Jane,
Let me know when I can open my eyes AGAIN... because this is pretty inconvenient for me!! LOL!
Welcome back, Jane!
Thanks, and not yet. ;D
Thursday and elmore:
Honestly I had to read elmore’s post about our day to know where I was. ;D We did so much and I ran him ragged. He was my personal tour guide and what a grand day I had. The weather was as perfect as the company and we had a super fun time. I can now picture elmore in his home as well as his apartment. He treated me to a delicious lunch and when the day was done insisted on escorting me back to my hotel. It was hard to say goodbye. :(
-
Vinnie has a girl? That is fantastic! Tell him he's the best.
Yes, and all he needs now is a dance!
-
Thank you Bruce. It's good to be back. After Bethesda I didn't have access to a computer-not that I had a free moment from all the fun I was having.
-
Thursday and elmore.
Elmore has a girl? -- I HAD to open my eyes... and mouth!! ;D
-
Thanks, and not yet. ;D
It was hard to say goodbye. :(
I know.
They even write songs about it!
-
As for musicals with original casts on DVD:
Gypsy
Anyone Can Whistle
Cabaret
Company
Follies
These are definitely on my top "quite-a-few" list (I refuse to limit myself to only five) of musicals that I'd love to have on DVD, and I'd include Candide with Barbara Cook. I would practically kill for the entire Kennedy Center set of Sondheim shows including the Japanese Pacific Overtures...and the original Anyone Can Whistle and Merrily We Roll Along just to have them! ;D
As for movies:
"Flower Drum Song" is the only movie that I can think of off the top of my head that I'd really want that isn't already on DVD.
And a very merry (or marry or Mary) Welcome Back D.R. Jane!
-
Maybe I should let François open his eyes and continue tomorrow.
-
Sounds like a plan, Jane. ;)
-
DR Jane welcome back!
Glad you liked WICKED. Who were the leads when you saw it?
I know West Wing starts in 2 weeks (oct 20th). Not sure when Kristin will be on. I'll post it if I hear anything. It says she will be having a "major recurring role". So I"m guessing once she starts that she will be on a lot. But I'm also guessing that she probably can't be in the first few episodes (if they are just announcing her casting now).
-
Maybe I should let François open his eyes and continue tomorrow.
Too late! :D
-
Thanks George.
François- ;D

Btw, I cannot wait to see the pics of the NYC gathering.

DR Jane, welcome back and so glad that you had a nice trip! And getting to meet so many nice DRs too! You are quite the Bi-coastal HHWer now!!
By the way, DR Elmore3003 certainly speaks very highly of you, as I knew he would!
I got a post card from Tom and Colin today! A lovely shot of an adorable tiny town in surrounded by forests...I want to live there!!
Tom says to pass on greetings to JMK, George, and Panni!
-
Too late! :D
Too late....now!
Open your eyes!
BUT..... to me that sings like a ROYAL WEDDING! :D
-
New Page!
Let's do the Sunday Jumps!
-
Well, my sister's boyfriend came over earlier today and installed a DVD burner on my computer! However, when I play DVDs, the picture and the sound is all jumpy and it doesn't play smoothly at all! :o I used to have a DVD-ROM player and it did the same thing, just not as bad. I don't know if it's because I don't have enough RAM (but not ewes) on my computer, or what. It should work perfectly, but it doesn't. Larry (the sis' boyfriend) doesn't know what's going on, either...yet. He's going to come over tomorrow to try out some things that he didn't have time for today. :-\
-

They all speak French there!
And, take it from me..... ;D

Oh, I get it!
Larry's girl is George's sister! ;D
-

Larry's girl is George's sister! ;D
Yup! For 14 years they've been dating. FOURTEEN YEARS! :o Who'da thunk it? They were engaged for a while, but for some reason decided no to get married (they're not living together). But they're still together. They've lasted longer than both of their previous marriages...put together!
-
Now I must exit my home environs (and sadly, my fast computer) and return to the environs of the being-house-sat house. But first, I must shower so that I may leave without embarrassment. ::)
Until the next time!
-
DR Jane, You are quite the Bi-coastal HHWer now!!
Careful!
No sex talk here!

Thank you and elmore also speaks highly of you, and I am in full agreement.
I’m having so much fun meeting DRs. Where should I go next?
I wish I had sent Tom my address.
-
DW Joy helped me put up a new avatar, so, when you read about how I don't look like my avatar, you don't know what avatar the DR is talking about.
HHW seems to have stretched my avatar horizontally, but that seems to happen with some people, and we don't have the time to fix that now.
This photo of me we cut and pasted from Wayne Moore's DucyLee.com, I think.
-
I’m going to cuddle with Keith, Bogie and Echo and watch something. :D
Have fun without me.
-
Noel I like your new avatar. It is closer but still doesn’t capture how darling you are. I’m sure Joy agrees.
-
Where should I go next?
Paris, France!
Tom is there (here) next tuesday, wednesday and thursday!
You can still make it! :D
... or... we'll talk highly of you in your absence! :D
-
I wish, I wish. Tell Tom and Colin hello from me.
-
Nice, pic, Noel!
Hello back to DR Tomovoz!
-
DRNoel, great shot! DRJane is right, though. While it's closer to the man I met than your old shot, it's more introspective and not as ebullient as I found you to be.
Well, I'm reading the new Mordden book, and frustrated by his errors in fact:
on page 130-131, discussing Bill Tynes' New Amsterdam Theatre Company, there are several errors: SWEET ADELINE's original orchestra parts were in archive at Tams-Witmark; SALLY was presented in the spring 1987, after Bill's death in Jan 1987, by his successor Sally Hassenfelt.
Re the p. 131 footnote on JUBILEE, not only was Russell Bennett's orchestration lost, but everything was lost so I constructed new vocal score, vocal and dance arrangements, as well as the orchestration. Ethan should know: he has/had a copy of the new vocal score in my hand. Also, I've never heard of the finding of a few original wind parts, but I have seen the one surviving carton of materials from the St Louis Muny, which is the vanishing point of the original materials: some ballet music from Gluck, a few other pars, but I don't recall anything remotely original. It was around 7 years ago that I examined the carton with Roberta Staats, of the Cole Porter Trust, so maybe I'm wrong?
-
I wish, I wish. Tell Tom and Colin hello from me.
You bet!
In fact, I'll say "hello!" from ALL of you here!
Right?
Of course, right! -- oh, a Fiddler reference! ;D
-
Elmore, Friday night my niece took me to Carvel’s in Times Square. :D

DRJane, I didn't know there was one in Times Square! Where? How was it?

So glad, DR Jane, that your New York experience was a wonderful one.
I'm wondering what the deli near the Gershwin was called. The Stage Deli, on Seventh Avenue?
Three days a week I'm deep, deep in the ground, many, many stories under the Gershwin. I do not think it's beautiful, at least not compared with all the older theatres on Broadway (and most are much, much older)
I'm glad you got to the Second Avenue Deli in the East Village. It's the best deli I can think of. Authentic New York City food.
And, to think, someone on this board once tried to convince us there's no such thing as New York City food!
-
I think the Times Square Carvel's is in the old Paramount Building (where bobby-soxers lined up to see Sinatra in the famous photo). I passed it as I was leaving our Barrymore's dinner and thought of the previously stated desire to eat there.
For New Yorkers of a certain age, Carvel's is most notable for Tom Carvel's ads involving Fudgy the Whale and various other cakes. I don't consider it a great delicacy, but it's amusing in a retro way.
-
Jrand, was it letterboxed?
Yes it was, gloriously so! ;D
-
Glad to see you back, Jane. We missed you. Glad you had a great trip.
-
Welcome back DRJANE. Sounds like you and all had a great time.
Nice new avatar DRNOEL!
Doh! I did not think to scan DRTom's postcard from France, Europe. I will do so now.
Yes MR BK it is the 2003 IMAGE release of the Lelouch film. I never buy a full screen version of a letterbox movie ON PURPOSE. 8-D

Card from Tom:
Conques (Aveyron) - La Porte du Barry marqquait le debut du faubourg (en occitant < Barry)
Tom writes; Visited Conques today - seat of the Holy roman Empire at one stage - maybe Pippin's father!
-
Welcome back. DR Jane. Nice new pic, Noel.
-
The Stage Deli! MMMMMMMMMMM - and they give you SO MUCH food - well, I guess I mean, the SELL you so much food!
-
Got back from an endurance test tonight attending a new play written by Southern playwright Judy Simpson Cook - STARSTRUCK. Uh, nice try but not good.

One thing I did enjoy today was the DVD of I CONFESS. Underrated Hitchcock and the print looks far, far better than the one for STAGE FRIGHT. Did not have time to watch the documentary since I had to leave for the theater, but I'll watch it tomorrow.
Montgomery Clift was one beautiful man.

Btw, the guy who lives next door is getting snow removal services this winter! That means no more him using his snow plow tractor and putting all his snow in front of my drive-way. Yeah!
This reminds me, I need to get a good snow shovel before winter sets in.

My treasured birthday card from Monty: Signed "Belated good wishes, Monty Clift"

Der Brucer and I took Zeus with us as we ran our errands. Good thing, because we kept running into people who would say "What a nice dog," and then they'd listen to our spiel about how he is up for adoption. Second good thing, that I keep a small notepad in my pocket, because several times I wrote down our phone number, so that people could give us a call. One woman DID call us, interested in adopting Zeus, and she sounded like a very good candidate as an owner. Unfortunately, her father got to talking with her after her first call, and talked her out of the idea as her work hours are rather hectic and she wouldn't have time for the pooch.
Still, in all...
-
Heading downtown, I stopped in a discount bookstore while der B and Zeus went over to a pet supply store. I was looking for a book on dog breeds (which I found), but while there I also found the Frommer's It Happened on Broadway, which was discussed yesterday. Heck, they had it marked down to $9, which made it a steal.
What I hadn't realized until I got to the register was that the store was celebrating an anniversary, which meant that my purchases were marked down an extra 25%.
What, exactly, is the word for a steal that is made into an even better bargain?
-
Re TOD, I'm just glad that we have preserved what has been preserved. While I appreciate Noel's comments about live theater being intended to be live, I recently enjoyed digging out of our collection a video preservation of Joe Papp's production of The Pirates of Penzance, in it's original Central Park staging. Being able to watch George Rose perform "Modern Major-General" is a blessing, in whatever form.
So, my wish list would be for at least some of the performances that have been preserved on tape to be released, however much wrangling it takes to get the legal rights. And yes, I'd pay premium dollar for them. And I'd much rather have legal copies of these shows, over bootlegs. I strongly believe that the creators of these shows deserve their fair cut of the profits.

No posts in over an hour. Skammen. You'd think it was late on a Saturday evening. Apparently, it IS late on a Saturday evening and the air is filled with the smell of WUSSBURGERS.
