TOD:

Hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em. Tracks rob shows of any life; as bk said in today's notes - they suck the life right out. Although now there's this technology where a "conductor" can tap out a beat on a little pad and at least give the actor/singers a little bit of autonomy with the music. Shows deserve to live with real live music, and real live musicians deserve their livelihood.

Second only to THAT problem is the current problem of penny-pinching producers who cut the orchestrations to nearly nothing (evidence last night's national tour of a major musical with only 5 players in the pit - they might as well have been tracks; they almost sounded like it. Such a pale imitation of the originals!

I must begin rising and shining, for this is the neice's first day as a young lady of America.  No wait, that's not right.  Get me to the church on time?  Better.  No, what I really need to do is get ready to meet some people at Bob Evans.  Because that's where they keep the sausage gravy and biscuits.

Good morning, all!  I am off to Toyland.

Sure enough, the money that I lost in the ATM yesterday was indeed deducted from my bank account.  We'll see if the 24-48 hours promise to refund it happens.  I am worried, though, abut that check that hasn't arrived in the post. I can't see why it should take four days to arrive from Florida.

And it's time to head downtown.

The twenty-something couple next door, AKA the Noisy Neighbors, had another one of their little parties last night. It didn't break up until 1 am. For a year or so they were actually relatively quiet, but about three months ago started having friends over again. The last time I spoke to them it got rather heated and I don't wish to put myself at risk. I almost called the cops, but was concerned that that would wake half the neighborhood. I will talk to the building manager, but she does little. So, only six hours sleep at most and I am not a happy camper.

Last week left me feeling like I had been beaten up, hit by a truck and left by the side of the road.  Luckily I had plans with Paul for breakfast and then went to the  Donald Trump event.  I felt better after breakfast and then really enjoyed seeing the Donald....yes Donald Trump brought me out of my slump.   Now there has to be a song in there

Thanks for the vibes and the commiseration. I've now had THREE talks with the building manager today, who must be as fed-up as I am with my neighbors. At last I feel we are on the same page. In the past, she just told me to talk to them myself. I did so, but it did no good. Now I think she's ready to evict. It's taken so much of my time and energy--and much of hers, as well.

Yes, I tried earplugs but am a side-sleeper and am just not comfortable with them. I purchased a white-noise machine with nature sounds. I used it last night. It drowns out some noises, but it's not enough to drown out theirs.

I ordered a BE ACTIVE brace for my leg, hopefully it will do at least of what it claims it will do.....reviews on the inner web are mixed.

I've never tried a BE ACTIVE brace, but I've used two Incrediwear braces, both of which I like.

Hope yours work out well, Jack.

We just saw a 330 foot long truck at a rest stop.  It is carrying a tunnel borer.  Everyone stooped to look at it and 99 percent of the people took photos.  Keith put one on FB if someone wants to put it here.

DR Jane must have a very accurate sense of distance. I'd never be able to tell how long a truck was.  ;)

DanM - when do you need to be in Parker?

Unfortunately it's off for now. Since I have a phobia about the bus and there were no other alternatives, I had to speak with my friends about my issue. I feel really bad and I didn't want them to think of me as an ingrate. I still feel very appreciative of their going to the trouble of getting the ticket to the event for me. Luckily and thankfully the ticket won't go to waste. My friends have a niece who is a huge fan of George Noory and Coast to Coast, so she will be able to use the ticket. I did want to go and spend some time out there, to catch up with them all. And to see my kitty, Minny.

Maybe another time soon, I hope. There's just not that many affordable public ways to travel there from Tucson.

We should get together. I have a similar problem with the tenants in the apt. above mine. I call them Dracula and his bride. I don't know what their connection really is, except parties and booze. She's always holding the notorious plastic red cup used at parties. I've called the sheriff several times and have complained to the apartment manager, which they've subsequently kept my written complaints on file and have spoken with the tenants. Unfortunately, the tenants are maybe 20 and act stupidly, not having any consideration for neighbors. They really are out-of-place here because it is generally very quiet here. I need quiet for resting and sleep during my recovery and the upcoming surgery. I know that I was once 20 and did stupid things, but I would never be rude like the tenants and impose myself on others. They act as if they are the only ones living here and have to learn the hard way I guess. Probably were never told when growing up that they ever did any wrong and lacked any discipline.

Unfortunately her nearly 80 year old brother has been making threats that he will contest the will. I have seen the papers, not that I'm a lawyer, but I don't see anyway for him to prevail. But my friend has been bullied by this brother all their lives, so I don't blame her for feeling this way.

Two questions:

1) How in the world did anyone green light the show "Small Wonder" which is on AntennaTV? It's barely entertaining. Even Alice Ghostley can't save it.

2) Were Alice Ghostley and Paul Lynde mimicking each other? Was it just a coincidence? They had the same physical and vocal mannerisms. Yes, I think they were separate people, and entertaining in their own way.

DR Dan M, I tried talking to the Noisy Neighbors repeatedly to no avail. I believe the He feels that he should be able to do whatever he likes and no one has the right to tell him otherwise. He seems to have a pretty hard shell. However, when the manager threatened to evict them he seemed visibly shaken. That surprised me. If one were to ask the question: is there any way to get through to inconsiderate young idiots, I'd say no--not at least by being nice or trying to reason with them. The only way that I've seen is to hit them where it hurts, ie., threaten eviction.
Title: Re: BOOK SIGNING 15
Post by: Jeanne on May 16, 2015, 04:24:56 PM
Getting management on your side is the other factor. It's not easy to evict in California. California law tends to side with the tenant and building owners must build a case, which takes time and effort. In my situation, I think the amount of time and effort already expended by the manager is less than what it would take to evict. The scale has finally tipped in my favor. We're all tired of dealing with these people.

I think it's promising that your management is keeping written complaints. Have others lodged complaints, too? Do you know if noise is the only issue or if they're often late in their rent? Your management may not really care, unfortunately, whether you're happy or not, but I bet they care greatly whether they get their money.

I think Arizona law sides with the landlord. My previous apartment, the one where I suffered the burglary, was awful in every way. The landlords were a couple in their 80s and they were like having meddling in-laws.

The apartment complex where I now live is pretty good, not great. It's the old saying that you get what you pay for. It's what I can afford. Yes, they do get testy with tenants if they don't pay by the 4th of the month.

The main problem I see, and this is what I've deduced from observation and talks with the main front office person, the tenant and whoever this girlfriend he has and whether she is legally on their lease agreement, he is not really the lease holder. He is an undergraduate at the University of Arizona. He has a part time job as a server in a restaurant, as does his girlfriend. There is no way that he could afford rent, etc. on that salary and have a brand new Nissan and all brand new furnishings. My belief is that he has been a spoiled brat all of his life, and somehow his family thought it better he not live at home due to his behavior. He is so pampered that his girlfriend cleans the apartment. He doesn't even wash his own clothes. There is a laundry just across from my building that is offered by the building management for those apartments that do not have their own washer/dryer, as mine does not. His does not either as it is a Xerox copy of my apartment. His family must live close by and it appears that he takes his clothes home to have them washed. There's much more that I've deduced and I could go on. In sum, he's a spoiled kid and needs to be knocked down a notch or three. One of my biggest pet peeves is people who are arrogant and have no right to assume that status. To put this in the street vernacular, this kid doesn't think his [bleep] stinks.

Signing was VERY well attended - extra chairs needed, and I don't really know what we'd have done with the other eight people who were "absolutely" coming for sure, positively.  People never cease to amaze me.  I read two chapters (carefully chosen and in chapter one I stopped before the actual plot point kicked in in the last two pages.  The other chapter I read that I knew folks would enjoy was the drive Adriana has with her mother with her mother waxing nostalgic for the lost Sunset Strip and Westwood.  I answered questions, yakked for a bit, signed and a LOT of cake was consumed.

DR Dan M, I'm not sure why it matters that NN isn't the lease holder. The lease holder is responsible. Could the lease holder be someone influential who the management doesn't wish to tangle with or embarrass?

I don't know of anyone at my local police station, but if I did I would talk to them. They'd probably just say, "Call us when they're too noisy." I don't like to bother the police with these sorts of issues, but it does move it up a notch and tends to get people's attention.

I don't think so. Well, I have noticed that the upstairs neighbor will act like a dog with his tail between his legs after the front office speaks with him, even after his claims lies that they didn't do anything wrong.

The last time I called the sheriff (the police don't cover this area as it is unincorporated), after the sheriff left, someone of his retinue acted like a spoiled brat and started dropping heavy items on the floor at 3:30-4 a.m. and slamming things and walking around like an elephant. Which of course all is childish behavior. I then wrote everything down and emailed to the management company. The front office spoke with them, and they've been sorta-okay ever since. This past weekend they really played it close to the line, but I wrote the front office about them anyway. They've been a lot quieter for now.

My concern now is that college is over with for the semester. Would it that they move out soon! What was strange about two days ago the old tenant who lived in that apartment was walking around the building. I'm wondering if he's thinking about coming back here. He was a great tenant. For most of the week he was working somewhere else. Must have been a good position because he always had a chauffeur pick up on Mon or Tues, and then return Thurs or Fri. When he was here during the week, his kids would visit and even they were no problem despite being teenagers.

DR Jeanne - I am so sorry about that situation with your horrible neighbor.

I know that YOU shouldn't have to do anything, but have you tried sleeping with earplugs and/or a white noise generator?

Yes, I tried earplugs but am a side-sleeper and am just not comfortable with them. I purchased a white-noise machine with nature sounds. I used it last night. It drowns out some noises, but it's not enough to drown out theirs.

I am obsessed with my white noise machine (that just has white noise). It actually helps me fall asleep and I use it every night, even when it is totally quiet.

I was watching Orson Welles' Scottish Play movie last night, and it reminded me of a rumor I read on the internet.....

Yes, I've read that and also his other possible out-of-wedlock son, Michael Lindsay-Hogg. Don't know if it's true, but look at the photos. Striking similarities. Oh, that Orson!

Does anyone want to say what the rumor is that they are talking about.  I only knew one of Welles children, and that was Rebecca.

Ol' Orson was sowing wild oats while he was married to other women. There are many sources that claim he had dalliances with some well-known actresses, but we'll never know for sure I guess.

I always think of John Frankenheimer who had been rumored to be Michael Bay's father, but this was only confirmed once Frankenheimer died. Who knows? In any event, the photos are way too similar, but that can be an artifact of lighting, pose, angle, etc. Of course, who doesn't like gossip? At the very least, that's what it is. And dish we shall. Allegedly. So-called and unsubstantiated.

There was an article on yahoo News yesterday detailing the history of the film "The Last Starfighter"

https://www.yahoo.com/movies/the-last-starfighter-sequel-118964499732.html

It mentions the cast album of the musical, though in passing, just two paragraphs.

That's an interesting article, Fred.  Thanks for sharing.

Maybe you can single-handedly clean up the morass that is the current state of broadcast television!

I thought it was elmore who was working on the Morass?

Signing was VERY well attended - extra chairs needed, and I don't really know what we'd have done with the other eight people who were "absolutely" coming for sure, positively.  People never cease to amaze me.  I read two chapters (carefully chosen and in chapter one I stopped before the actual plot point kicked in in the last two pages.  The other chapter I read that I knew folks would enjoy was the drive Adriana has with her mother with her mother waxing nostalgic for the lost Sunset Strip and Westwood.  I answered questions, yakked for a bit, signed and a LOT of cake was consumed.

Congrats, BK!  I will start reading it very soonly!

Don't know. Just showed up in the mailbox today. But I'm such an atypical TV viewer (radio is also rated). I never followed the herd and never will. Name any big trend, fad or music group, chances are I don't, won't and will not.

I'd love to see them leave and have this problem over and done with. If I had a stronger back I'd even help them move.  ;)

Good vibes are are out of there and you get nice quiet neighbors.

thanks. If they rent to an older adult I don't think there'd be a problem.

Unless they are deaf and both yell at each other.  The apartment building we lived in with isdues, and we were young but quiet, had young men who partied at night next door, and across the hall the shouting old couple in the mornings. ;D

I am glad it worked out with the ticket and they understand.  I would not want to drive the distance.

George we rented this room, with a frig and cooktop, for a month.  The room looks nice but the bed is lumpy.  The kitchen should be stocked but we have to ask for what we need.

On the upside we walked to a little Indian restaurant for an enjoyable meal and then to Baskin Robbins for ice cream.

I just watched a made-for-British-TV movie musical set in both 1969 and 1929 called That Day We Sang (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00TLOGY1U), starring Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton.  It's based on a stage musical written and directed by Victoria Wood, who also directed the movie.  Here's the synopsis:

Quote
That Day We Sang, by Victoria Wood, is a musical set in Manchester, 1969. It’s the story of Tubby & Enid, two lonely middle-aged people who grab a second chance at life, reconnected by the power of music. They meet at a reunion of the Manchester Children’s Choir who made the iconic Columbia recording of Nymphs and Shepherds in 1929.

Tubby and Enid’s faltering romance is interweaved with the story of Jimmy, a member of the choir whose love of singing transcends his difficult home life.

As we go between Tubby and Jimmy, their stories collide, and they must somehow find each other.

I think it's a delightfully sweet story.  Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton (who starred in "Sweeney Todd" together!) are both very good.

There is also a one-hour documentary which has a bit about the original concert, but it's mostly about how the movie got made, which I'm watching right now.

Well, I must go to bed now.  In the morning, my sister and I are going to the first showing of "Avengers: Age of Ultron."  I saw it already, but my sister hasn't.  I said that I'd go with her to see it again, and I insisted that we go to the Yelm Cinema because they have recliners!  When I went the first time, I'd never seen actual recliners in a movie theater, but friends have told me that it's happening more and more. :D

Good night, all!
