Good morning, all! I am off to Toyland. i will print out the last number for Gentlemen, Be Seated!, grab another pile of possessions and head home. I want to spend the majority of the day catching up on the accumulation of DVDs, tidying up a bit, and finishing this last bit of Golden Apple work.
DR singdaw, this Fifth Gospel book sounds like fun. I may order a copy.

The rains have stopped for a short while. Today's rains are actually supposed to be worse than yesterday's were. That is, if you believe meteorologists.

Thanks to the screwed up city government of Manhattan, I cannot get downtown this morning and i am now thoroughly pissed. Today's street fair on Broadway has messed up the buses, I have no idea where the 104 downtown bus is, and i am screwed. The street fair last week was one block away on Amsterdam Avenue. In 35 years I have come to realize that the street fair is the same all over the City: same goods, same people, same food vendors; they pack up and move to the next location the following week. The dogs bark and the caravan moves on.
You'd think they'd give my neighborhood a rest for a month or so before another damned one.
-
DR elmore3003 - apparently the "complete" Golden Apple recording is now shipping. It will be interesting to hear your impressions.
I've heard a bootleg from the first weekend's performance: some changed lyrics and vocal lines, some strange and, too often hard-driven tempi, characterless voices on the character roles, authorized and unauthorized cuts, the substitution of a revised number frm the 1970s for the 1954 original. and an insensitive conductor. The orchestra sounded pretty good, though. I'd say it's a good college try.
Now, I may change my opinion of some things when I hear the final recording, which was assembled from four performance tapes, but I followed the bootleg with the score and there's a lot that distressed me, especially given that the production was aware there was an interest in a recording early in the game.
When Old Mother Hare, who should sound like Katisha, doesn't and sounds like a fairly young lady with makeup and a light voice, something's wrong.

Good morning, all.
I guess I slept well. I was dead tired last night after partaking of a neighbor's cookout where some delicious food and drink was consumed, then attending the closing night of a friend's production of SOUVENIR (about Florence Foster Jenkins) which was excellent, then going along to their very lovely cast party and getting home in the wee hours. Just plain old dead tired is what I was, but I was able to sleep in a little extra this morning and I'm feeling pretty good now. Tired but good.
Coffee!
-
Today, Day #2 of Memorial Day Weekend, will be spent mowing some lawn, getting rid of some weeds, straightening up the deck, blowing away more leaves (there are always leaves), cleaning the grill, and whatnot. Lots of whatnot. It's a lot, but I'll have help. I've put this off, so the place will hopefully have made the transition from shabby to decent looking by this evening.

DRsingdaw, there are a couple of comments on the Texas performances and recording here:

I wish that the composer's daughter had asked me to strongarm the jerk conductor, rather than letting him walk over her.

Rain and more rain in the Austin area...and it's expected to continue through the week.
The bad news is there is plenty of flooding.
The good news is that the drought may be over.
And, in the midst of all this, I have a cold.

Happy Birthday to Dear, Dear DR Jeanne!!!

DR TCB - I like to watch 3 COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN.....but Maggie McNamara is so annoying and her character is so selfish, it's hard for me to stay with it. She gets Jean Peters FIRED from her job and then never mentions it again.... To think that a character like Louis Jourdan's would even be interested in her is a stretch of the imagination.....
But then....she plays the SAME person in all of her movies.....

My copy arrived yesterday. I'm listening to it now.
I wish that they could have taken people into a studio for some of the songs because the sound on the gorgeous "Goona Goona Lagoona" is lousy, and the singer, well, she ain't Bibi Osterwald.
Don't care for the singer who does "Lazy Afternoon" either. It's as if she doesn't understand the song. It's a song of seduction. It's not a power ballad.
That said, I like other parts of it and it's great to hear stuff that wasn't on the original cast recording.

Just made a Berry Blue Cheese Spread for a party later. Way easy and really good. Dried blueberries, blue cheese and cream cheese, garlic, scallions and toasted pecans. That's it.

What a dishonor to her career. He's not my cup of tea and in some ways has eclipsed both his parents, Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller, but she was pretty important with her husband in the 1960s and 70s. Unfortunately, many of whatever this new generation is called have no interest in history that is beyond 5 years, and recognize Ben Stiller as a name.
-
Here's a Stiller and Meara commercial from the 1980s:
https://youtu.be/emGbzUbpiA8
In the tristate NY area TV and radio, Stiller and Meara were on many commercials and radio spots. They were the everyperson or every couple. Besides being funny, their popularity was that they didn't seem glamorous and out-of-reach. Many people felt they could identify with them.

In the very annoying department: realized at the concert hall last night that I had left my cellphone in the Uber driver's car. Fortunately we had another smartphone among us to order the ride home. AND there was a text from our original Uber driver: he had my smartphone! So far so good. I had a conversation with him wherein he was alarmingly vague about when and how I might get it back. And now: no phone, and no response to my texts about connecting so that I can get it back.

I'm up, I'm up. Couldn't get to sleep until after four and then slept straight through to twelve-thirty, then just stayed in bed till two.
-
I can't tell yet if I'm feeling better - I think so. I think what my tummy is probably feeling is actual hunger, since the only food I've had in a while was yesterday's poached eggs, toast and a bit of rice and then Saltines.
-
It was suggested to me by a neighbor who's had the same thing that IF I'm still queasy today that I do the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. The thought of that, however, already makes me want to vomit on the ground. What I'd really like to have is a meatless Cobb salad, but don't know if that's good or bad for me.

I used to see her a lot when I worked at Barnes & Noble. She liked me, and i was quite fond of her. she was also a wonderful actress, the original Bunny in The House of Blue Leaves. I also loved her as David Eigenberg's demented mother on Sex and the City.

How did he know how to contact you? Did you provide a second phone number?
Agreed, most annoying.

I never thought about applesauce as something to have on hand for when you're ill, but I think it's actually a good choice. It can be served warm, too, which usually helps me when I have tummy problems.
-
How did he know how to contact you?
Initially, he texted the phone number of the person who ordered the ride. (Which was another person in our party.)
-
How are you celebrating, DR Jeanne?
Rather quietly. I generally take Sundays as a sort of "me" day, which I cherish. That includes dinner out. I don't care for birthday cake, but happened across some cake slices recently that looked really good and bought a small slice. It really was good. A friend picked up some apple streudel for me at Costco, too. I have plans with a few friends for birthday meals, but they are all out of town or not feeling good, so we'll do those things over the coming weeks. I rather like the idea of a birthday month, not a birthday day, and have been treating myself to a few little things over the past few weeks.

I can't say at what point life got so complicated, only that it is. This schedule, that schedule, family issues, and so on. It makes things much easier if you don't restrict yourself to a given day. I like this way better.
-
Speaking of food, I'm getting hungry.
TTFN.
-
Lettuce is one of the most difficult foods to digest, so I personally wouldn't recommend a cobb salad for the stomach flu. Mark asked me, "whatever happened to good ol' fashioned chicken soup for what ails you?" I would head straight to Jerry's Deli for some of their fabulous matzoball soup. It's a huge bowl and I can't imagine anyone with the stomach flu being able to finish it, but you could always take home the leftovers.

We're watching the Coca-Cola 600 and will soon switch to the National Memorial Day Concert.

DR Jeanne, how about stopping by Trader Joe's and treating yourself to something you like but ordinarily wouldn't bother with?
Funny you should say this. A few days ago I wanted some strawberries and stopped at Trader Joe's for some. I told myself I could buy anything I wanted in honor of my upcoming birthday. What did I leave with? Strawberries, cherries, and toilet paper. Truly, my needs are modest! Of course, now that CHOCOLATE is a no-no due to heart issues, it really narrows the field. I can be quite happy, however, with simple (and low-cal) treats. And it's soooo nice to be back to my smaller size.

So instead of doing the BRAT diet I did the BRA diet. I couldn't stomach the thought of dry toast. So I had a banana, some white rice and some applesauce. That combo could put me off food forever. If I feel hungry later I may go attempt poached eggs again, or perhaps even a sandwich of some sort - no meat, though.

THE ARTIST is on CoziTV now. I missed the first part, but having seen it several times before, had no problem getting into the movie. I know that there was controversy because the composer stole a section from Herrmann's "Vertigo" score. I don't remember how that was all resolved, but as long as Herrmann received credit, the music does seem to fit, although it would have been preferable for the composer to have written an original theme. My memory is that it was explained away as homage, just as the entirety of the movie is homage. I think THE ARTIST is among the best of recent vintage movies, which is oversaturated with CGI effects movies, superhero movies, and comedies so vapid as to cause brain decay.
-

That sounds gross to me too. But definitely the rice and the toast. I would eat a lot of that.
-
Basmati and toast, both help settle my stomach. Bananas can upset it,as can apples. Applesauce is easier and might be refreshing if only for a few bites.

Jane Russell would approve, cross my heart! ;)
-
The Artist had the Herrmann music tracked in during editing - from what I've read, the composer either ran out of time and didn't deliver the piece in time (his original version of that cue is on the CD), or the director just loved the Herrmann more. It's credited in the film.

Wish one could actually tell what was playing at the Four Star and the El Rey but too blurry. What's so wonderful is the nightlife that's no non-existent there. All those people walking and taking the night, and stores and restaurants where you actually entered ON Wilshire rather than in the back (I think Adray's was the first store on the Miracle Mile that refused to open onto Wilshire). There was Du-Par's, formerly my father's restaurant, and Coulter's had become the Broadway.

She gets Jean Peters FIRED from her job and then never mentions it again.... To think that a character like Louis Jourdan's would even be interested in her is a stretch of the imagination.....
But then....she plays the SAME person in all of her movies.....
Louis was almost enough to keep me watching, but between Miss McNamara (no Ms. for her) and Clifton Webb looking like death, it was the final straw.

Today I discovered on my Roku that I had all three versions of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. They had the Special Edition, the Director's Cut, AND, my favorite, the original theatrical version. So I had a wonderful afternoon with Richard Dreyfuss and François Truffaut (perhaps he should try directing).

It is still tough to try and read, so I won't start THE FIFTH GOSPEL till next week.

I bought the special edition Blu-ray that has all three movies on one disc.

Went and had poached eggs in a rye end. I had no idea what it was - they hollow out the end of a loaf of rye and dump two poached eggs in it. So, that's what I had, with some applesauce. Of course, I feel completely nauseous - I guess this stupid thing wants to hang on and I think I would have felt just as nauseous eating another helping of rice and banana.

I am sorry, bk.
That really stinks.

IN THIS TIME OF ANGST
Heard you're feeling rather low,
Sometimes that's the way things go.
Run yourself a nice, hot bath
And stay away from Sylvia Plath.
