Title: A CHAW OF TOBACCO
Post by: bk on May 28, 2015, 12:33:49 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a chaw of tobacco, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having a chaw and are expectorating like crazy.

TOD:

When you're talking Orson Welles, you're in my ball court.  I've been a major fan since I saw CITIZEN KANE back in my college days.  Indeed, I wrote one of my college term papers on Welles.

Even all of his lesser films are of interest, but aside from KANE, i love THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, TOUCH OF EVIL, THE STRANGER (I saw that when it first came out in a theater) and MACBETH.

It's no secret that I wrote a one-person play about Welles, which has been performed in a few theaters around the country.  If you've never heard Ed French's audio version of the play, you have missed a magnificent performance.

Thank you DR SINGDAW.....yes they are a nice looking YOUNG cast.....or maybe I'm just getting older....or maybe a combination of the two.

I did find out last night that MOST of the brothers and suitors don't know how to put on stage makeup....it was kind of a cross between RuPaul's Drag Race and Emmett Kelly.  So I will do a short tutorial this evening.

I do love me some Orson Welles, early and often.  Favorite performances and movies are a little hard to choose.  I love whichever one I'm watching.  But let's try.

First, his own films.  Actually, Kane and Ambersons are so obvious that those will go without saying and I shall pick and choose from the rest.  The Stranger, Touch of Evil, Chimes at Midnight, and The Trial.  With an Oxford Comma.  So, does this mean I don't like the other Shakespeare films or F for Fake or Lady from Shanghai or Mr. Arkadin or something else I might be forgetting?  Of course not.  I love 'em all.  But I'm particularly enamored of those above, and of his own performances in every last one of his films.

Performances in other works:  The Third Man, Jane Eyre, Return to Glennascaul, Catch-22, History of the World, Part I (narrator).  Also, I only saw it when broadcast in 1972, but I always remembered loving his genius at milking every line in the Hallmark TV production of The Man Who Came to Dinner.  But his appearances and narrations are always a gift.

And then of course there are the radio programs.  I love it all.

I offered furniture and supplies to the building super and the doorman.  The super wants the photocopier and the doorman asked for the microwave and mini-efrigerator.

Does anyone need any filing cabinets, chairs, lamps, shelving?

I am eagerly looking forward to the surgery, not that I like being in hospital, but maybe I can get a facsimile of my former shape. I always looked forward to any TV appearances by Orson. He was a great raconteur and entertainer on Merv and Cavett. I know he was on Carson's Tonight, but I don't think that often. There may have been a falling out between the two.

Here's another sketch with John Candy as Orson in this parody from SCTV. This bit parodies so many things, it's great and is held together by Rick Moranis as Merv:

I second all of the previous mentions of actual Orson Welles films, and whatnot, as he has been one of my heroes. I don't know why, but since childhood, I've always liked and admired him, and had a few LPs. Yes, I was precocious.

I remember seeing some of these episodes as a youngster. Wish I could get these to watch, Orson Welles Great Mysteries. I know he just basically lent his name and did the intros and outros, but it's Orson.

I think Orson Welles wrote something for the liner notes of Cybill Does It ... to Cole Porter. Praising that album was one of the comedic highlights of his career.

A favorite Orson Welles narration of mine is for Nicholas Ray's King of Kings. I still cannot pronounce "apostles" like Welles could, in which the "t" is stressed yet seems natural. Makes the word sound foreign almost. My ears always tune in carefully at that point in the movie because I try to process that.

DR Bigbuck, did you lurk for a while before you joined us? There are many HHWisms that might seem a bit...um, strange to others.

I had the greatest time of my life. Had a few coffee breaks in between. The breaks were completely in vain because we are doing a short show and it helped me with ideas.

Happy birthday Arnold, once again.

Have a good one!  ;)

Thank You Once Again Big Buck !

I returned a Netflix DVD the other day and received an email saying that they'd "received notification" that I'd returned a disc. What? How would they know I'd sent one back unless they'd received it? I phoned them this evening and was told that the USPS now has scanners that notify Netflix, even though they (USPS) still have the DVD. Really? That was a possibility that hadn't occurred to me. The rep also confirmed that the delivery problem is in some areas of the country, but not others. It sounds like they're trying to address the problem. I can imagine that they've received lots of angry calls. People want their DVDs!

DR bigbuck, it is standard for us to post our dreams and then JRand interprets them for us. Like this:

Last night I had a dream. I was out in the field with other people collecting, and we had collected two rattlesnakes, two tarantulas, and two large lizards. They were in one of those cardboard animal carriers that we used to put our cats in to take them to the vet before they made the plastic ones (carriers, not plastic cats).

We got to someone's house, and when the box was opened, all the animals were missing. We found the tarantulas and the lizards, but when I was standing next to a bed, a rattlesnake that was hiding under the bed bit me. So I began walking to the ER, because my friend wouldn't drive me. Along the way my leg really started to hurt, so I saw this guy who was getting released from jail and I asked him for a ride to the hospital. He agreed and I got into his VW  bug.

We drove over rolling green hills and I said: "Hey, this isn't the way to the hospital!" He said: "Sure it is -- we are going southbound on Camelback Road." (Camelback Road goes east and west.)

Then I woke up.

Personally, I think the dream's meaning is this: Don't mess with rattlesnakes, and don't get in the car with a stranger. But JRand will probably say something else.

Nice to learn that there was a tie in this year's spelling bee. The two kids had to spell stuff like scherenschnitte, pyrrhuloxia, thamakau, and caudillismo.

Don't know a single one of those words. Where's my dictionary?

I think there was a Sharon Schnitte in my junior high class. She had bad pyrrhuloxia, so she would literally drink bottles of Listerine all day. That caused her to go to Dr. Thamakau who fixed her caudillismo and her canutenpin.

This TV has just started the movie WHAT DID YOU DO IN THE WAR, DADDY? which has a Henry Mancini score. The CD seems to go for premium prices, and it looks like a foreign release, not domestic. Wonder if this would be reissued.

Well, I must be going.  I'm ushering for a local production of Time Stands Still (http://harlequinproductions.org/season-2015/time-stands-still/).  I've never heard of it before, but it's supposed to be very good.

Nor had I, but it's next on the slate at my local theater.

It was very good.
