Well, you've read the notes, you're high on the notes, the notes are high on you, and now it is time to post until the high cows come home.
-
And a VERY happy anniversary to our very own Noel and his ever-lovin' Joy.
-
Happy Anniversary to Noel & Joy!
-
Hmmmmmmmm......DRJOSE is in Houston doing A CHORUS LINE. That is so exciting!
Thanks for the Monty birthday card story, DRPANNI. Very nice. And great picture!
DRJAY I didn't hear the Gower Champion in heaven story - but I did hear the Gower Champion-Ginger Rogers story. After hours of working with Miss Rogers before she was to go into HELLO, DOLLY!, Champion stormed out into the street. And who should he meet but Mr. Hermes Pan. Gower asked: "My God, Hermes, why didn't you tell me?" And Hermes replied simply: "I thought you knew."
-
Hmmmmmmmmm.....movies that caused me to laugh and LAUGH at the theatre would have to include WHAT'S UP DOC?
And a couple of plays that did me in were a college production of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, and a production of Alan Auckbourn's A CHORUS OF DISAPPROVAL presented at the Irish Play Festival in Dundalk. The audience was in tears from laughter at the staging and the performances.
A production of the musical CANDIDE also made my laugh a LOT!!
-
DRPANNI you might live across the street from one of the International Beauties who played in MISSILE TO THE MOON!
-
I saw the original London production of NOISES OFF which had among others, Paul Edrington (from Yes, Minister) and Patricia Routledge (from Keeping Up Appearances) and nearly fell on the floor with laughter. I did weep with laughter.
When I saw BLAZING SADDLES for the first time, I did literally fall out of my seat laughing. When we got to the part where Burt Gilliam says, "Sing us a little nigger song." And the railroad workers go into a rendition of I Get A KICK OUT OF YOU, I knew I was in for a rare treat. It may have been the campfire scene that put me on the floor. Finally, someone actually admitting publicly what we all knew, farts are funny!
-
Ruling Class (only the first half though, when Peter O'Toole thinks he is Jesus) and Airplane.
Whoopi Goldberg's first Broadway show in 1984.
-
Happy Anniversary to Joy and Noel
-
TOD
A series of plays from Britain published by Samuel French concerning the fictional town of Farmsdale. In it, a group of community theatre women put on different types of shows (i.e. french farce, Shakespeare, murder mystery, sci-fi, etc.). Everything that can possibly go wrong does with hilarious results. I have never laughed so hard in my life as when I read the one where the Farmsdale women did a Christmas Carol.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]! ! ! ! ! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO DR NOEL AND DR JOY ! ! ! ! ![/move]

Happy anniversary to DRs Noel and Joy.
Stage: I agreee, BK, that CATSKILLS ON BROADWAY (and yes, especially Mal Z Lawrence) had me in stitches. Ditto the original NY company of NOISES OFF.
Film: I think AIRPLANE had me laughing uncontrollably. But I know there was another one (I can see it in my mind's eye), but am just not placing what movie it was. I have also been known to laugh out loud at inappopriate times, or when no one else is laughing.
-
Movies that had me laughing uncontrollably:
Airplane!
A Fish Called Wanda
Austin Powers (the first one.)
The Man With Two Brains
Zelig
And in the theatah:
Noises Off
Baby With The Bathwater
-
Noises Off, Whoopi's first show, sure.
Over 20 years ago, Upstairs at O'Neals included a particularly hysterical number, Mr. Karp's response to Morales of A Chorus Line, that left-coasters finally got to hear this year due to its inclusion in What If. The first Upright Citizens Brigade show, A Bucket of Truth and Adam McKay's 2nd City craziness Pinata Full of Bees starring Rachel Dratch. A book musical that had me falling off my chair from start to finish: From the Hip, which is all about these performing Siamese Twin sisters. The "pretty one" is tapped for stardom, and we see her playing Joan of Arc while the "not-so-pretty one" is obscured by flames.
Films: Miracle of Morgan's Creek, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Love & Death
-
Oh yes.....the first time I saw FORBIDDEN BROADWAY, sitting on top of a window sill, as I recall, at what was then known as Palsson's. Could not stop laughing. Jason Alexander was in it then. Before he was "Jason Alexander"
-
Other than titles already mentioned, I'd have to say LEND ME A TENOR.
-
Good morning, all! I am truly soory I missed Chat last night, but it sounds is if others were thinking yesterday was one more Sunday.
DRS Noel and Joy, a very happy anniversary wish from this corner!
DRJane, no, dear lady, it was not squiring you about Gotham that put me under the weather. I think there is bear, ursa major or minor, in my genes. I want to hibernate for a bit when it turns cold and I was feeling hybernatorial, possibly a bit coming-cold-or-influenza, all day Sunday and Monday. I'm feeliong much berter today.
DRJose, please tell Baayork hello for me. I haven't seen her since I left the Drama Book Shop.
TOD: I still laugh out loud at Bette Midler's RUTHLESS PEOPLE, and it's one of my favorite fims. I think Joe Orton's LOOT and WHAT THE BUTLER SAW are brilliant: half the laughs come from the outrageous text and the other half from the juxtaposition of violence and lunacy. Of current material, THE PRODUCERS would have to top my list, a constant source of low humor and hijinx, much funnier than its film source. I still think THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST is the greatest comedy ever, and every time Mrs Hardcastle opens her mouth in SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER I fall down laughing.
-
I laughed til I ached during the first two thirds of TOOTSIE.
Ditto WHAT'S UP DOC?
I laughed, for the wrong reasons, most of the way through AT LONG LAST LOVE.
I still laugh, for all the right reasons during THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL.
MIRACLE AT MORGAN'S CREEK is quite possibly my favorite comedy film.
Woody Allen's LOVE AND DEATH.
I literally ached for two days after seeing THE PRODUCERS on stage.
-
DR Elmore3003's mention of Bette Midler made me think of another piece, while not a movie or stage show, I only heard it on tape/CD is Miss Midler's Mud Will Be Flung Tonight. I still laugh at that one when I hear it.
-
I'm also feeling hybernatorial, but am poking out of my den to wish DRs Joy and Noel and wonderful anniversary.
We celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving on Saturday, feeding 23 (several generations of Gord's relatives). Along the way, not only did the turkey get stuffed. I picked up a doozy of (ah-choo) a cold.
I enjoyed catching up on the posts, especially the tales of the NYC gathering of the HHW clan. Jane, Second Avenue Deli was my pick of the delis. But I do have a soft spot for the Stage - which is probably the first one you went to. That's where the waitress asked me, "Whatcha having, baldy?" (I had a pastrami on rye and could barely get through one sandwich. I managed.)
As for the TOD, some additions: "Black Comedy" on the stage; and, at the movies, "High Anxiety" (especially Madeline Kahn's scenes) and the first "Naked Gun" (Raye Birk as Papshmir; plus another funny fart scene).
-

Let's face it--farts are funny. Remember Nedra Volz in 10?

Happy First Anniversary to DRS Noel and Joy!
-
DR Jose mentioned he was told about the CINDERELLA casting at the NYCO.
This was posted on Talkin Broadway. Not sure if it's correct:
Sarah Uriarte-Berry as Cinderella.
Eartha Kitt as the Fairy Godmother.
Renee Taylor and Dick Van Patten as the Queen and King.
Chris Sieber as the Prince.
John "Lypsinka" Epperson as the Wicked Stepmother.
Lea Delaria and Ana Gasteyer as the two step-sisters.

Yep! That's correct. I guess it has been announced!
-And there will also be an ensemble/chorus of 34 singers/dancers! Baayork has also written a new book, which got a very hearty approval from the folks at R&H. She goes into rehearsals right after A Chorus Line opens here. It will be running in mid-November, and I'm hoping to make it up to NYC to see it.
-
Happy Anniversary, DRs Joy and Noel!
-
DR elmoore - I will be sure to say HI to Baayork for you in a few hours! ;)
-
As for topic of the day...
DR beckon - I know those Farmsdale plays. A theatre in Richmond started doing the Christmas one a few years ago. Very funny! -And, the scary thing is, is that productions like those in the play could happen - and probably have!
I really can't think of any plays that made me laugh, laugh, laugh.... I'm sure I've seen some bust-a-gut-funny ones, but they're just not coming to my mind right now.
As for movies... ditto. ;)
OK - Gotta get ready for rehearsal.... Be back tonight...
Laters...
-
The only musical I can remember laughing so hard I cried, was "The Musical of Musical" - The Musical, at the York Theatre Company in December, 2003 - I even laugh as much when I listen to the recording! Happy Anniversary DR Noel and Joy!
-
Theater Comedy High: NOISES OFF
Movie Comedy High: AIRPLANE! (but YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is right on its heels). Recently, I got almost sick from laughing at THE CIRCUS watching it on DVD.
-
The internet is running very slowly for me this morning. Not this site especially, but just overall, pages are taking a little longer to load today.
-
Page Two (a la Paul Harvey):
"Sleepers" -- especially the scene in which Woody has disguised himself as a robot and is passing around the pleasure ball.
"What's Up, Doc" -- especially: the sequence where Mabel Albertson keeps getting tripped as she tries to make her way to the elevator; the sequence where Madeline Kahn is being dragged from the ballroom, her heels leaving skidmarks on the ballroom floor.
"The Man With Two Brains" -- especially: the encounter with the little girl following Kathleen Turner's accident at the start of the film, and the scene in which Steve Martin exclaims: "Into the mud with you, slime queen." Also, the appearance of Merv Griffin -- and the reason for it -- was a hoot.
"Love and Death" -- Keaton and Allen and the Spanish (?) ambassador. Woody and Diane take turns trying to bash the ambassador over the head with a wine bottle, but each time they have to hit themselves...the sight of Keaton sliding down the wall with her hair getting stuck on the paneling had me in stitches. And I giggle every time I think of "wheat"!
Live theater:
"An Evening With Dame Edna" -- I laughed so hard I was in tears. After the first 15 minutes, my cheeks hurt. I didn't recover for a full week.
-
I forgot about The Musical of Musicals. I laughed so much that the man sitting next to me in the theatre, as we were waiting for the subway train, said he enjoyed seeing someone laugh out loud as I did and really enjoy himself in the theatre.
-
Yep! That's correct. I guess it has been announced!
Actually I don't think it's been announced officially. Someone in the know just posted the info on ATC.
-
***HAPPY ANNIVERSARY DRS JOY AND NOEL!****
As for the TOD - Having written comedy for many years, I find it hard sometimes to just laugh. I tend to nod approvingly and say, "That's funny."
HOWEVER - I do laugh from time to time, yes sir. The first thing that came to mind is the "Chuckles Bites the Dust" episode of Mary Tyler Moore, That is a perfect half hour (or 24 minutes) of comedy. No matter how often I see it, I laugh until I have tears in my eyes.
There were some moments in WHAT IF? - which I also saw numerous times - which made me laugh without reservation ( for 2, at eight - corner table). The Oklahoma trailer being among them, of course.
As for films, here are some that I can think of at the moment:
TO BE OR NOT TO BE
THE COURT JESTER
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
A FISH CALLED WANDA
AIRPLANE
parts of SLEEPER
SOME LIKE IT HOT
...and I've got to include some screwball comedies, which I love. Back later with that.
-
Before I shower - some other comedies (some screwball) that made me laugh - some I haven't seen for years, so who knows how I'd react now...
NINOTCHKA
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE
I MARRIED A MALE WAR BRIDE
HIS GIRL FRIDAY
-
The Amazing Race 6 teams:

HOWEVER - I do laugh from time to time, yes sir. The first thing that came to
I went to see "Something About Mary" thinking I was going to have a laugh-out-loud fest. But the best I could do was, as you say, nod (and only occasionally) and say, "that's funny."
"To Be Or Not To Be" (both the Jack Benny and the Mell Brooks versions) would also be on my list.
-
Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DR Andrea was in NY this week visiting her boyfriend. She told me she was wanted to buy me a Wicked window card to add to my fledgling collection for my upcoming birthday.
I said YEA and gave her a list of places she could get it and a frame (which I offerred to pay for knowing how expensive they can be). Also, her being there would alleviate the problem of expensive shipping and/or customs fees.
She found a frame that fit the standard window card (14x22) for relatively cheap but could NOT for the life of her find the actual window card that listed the original cast instead of the current one. Knowing that was the cast I saw, she wanted to get me the former. '
By the the time she realized she'd have to motor over to Triton (where they DID have the OBC window card) they were already closed.
No worries I thought... I'll just order it online from either the Gershwin (which I forget to tell Andrea sells the merchandise for the show including this window card) or from Triton itself.
But gahhhhh when I found out that not only will the Triton poster end up costing me AT LEAST $36 US in postage on top of the cost of the actual poster plus tax (WHICH I REFUSE TO PAY IN PROTEST) the Gershwin's online shop - which has the poster and for an excellent price - will not ship to outside the US.
So the end result is that now I have an empty frame and nothing to put into it without going into bankruptcy.
-
Ooh and even more cause for anger: Triton is charging $36 USD shipping for something which the US Postal Service online calculator says could cost as little to mail as $15 USD!!!
-
I actually liked parts of THE HORN BLOWS AT MIDNIGHT which was always a part of Jack Benny's act in which he stated it was the worst film ever made. Not so!
-
I'm sorry DR Emily. I feel your pain. I'm sick of customs charges and ridiculous shipping charges too. :(
-
Another film that had me laughing out loud and guffawing:
"Porky's"
-
What if:
The presidential/vice presidential candidates this year were women. What image would they project and would we vote based on looks???
-
What if:
-
What it:
-
And the piece de resistance among the What Ifs:
-
Okay - that made me laugh.
-
Cheney is actually the most becoming of the four.
-
Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DR Emily, have you tried browsing for a Wicked window card on eBay?
-
Bush looks uncannily like my neighbor Linda.
And does anyone else see the resemblance between Kerry and Celine Dion?
-
Panni, did your neighbor lady happen to mention the name of the Miss Universe??? (from yesterday's post)
-
Kerry puts me in mind of what Margaret Hamilton must have looked like when she went out on the town!
-
I think Edwards is the best looking of the men. So his female version should be more attractive than it is. Who dressed and wigged him? ;)
-
So glad to have seen PORKY'S mentioned, for it's true, I find it terrifically funny.
I notice that there are not a lot of BRINGING UP BABY fans floating around here, but, once the olive falls on the floor, I'm rolling too.
Hearty Congrats and Best Wishes to Noel and Joy on this Happy Anniversary!
-
I think Edwards is the best looking of the men. So his female version should be more attractive than it is. Who dressed and wigged him? ;)
Haven't a clue.
-
Well, I cannot believe I omitted THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL, which still produces huge guffaws!
I heard my MRI results today: no spinal damage, so I have to begin therapy on my back for a pinched nerve, and I probably need a medication for arthritis.
I've got an appointment with the surgeon about the abscess, and I guess he'll schedule it soon.
DRD-I-T, if a waitress at any restaurant said to me "what'll you have, baldie," my answer would be either "your head on a plate" or "your job." Familiarity can breed fast contempt in a dining situation.
-
I notice that there are not a lot of BRINGING UP BABY fans floating around here, but, once the olive falls on the floor, I'm rolling too.
I originally put Bringing Up Baby on my list but then I thought I remembered that the notes said to list the movies that one saw in a movie theatre. But looking back now I see that was not the case, so add my name to the list of BUB fans.
-
Mbarnum - Still working on it. I haven't seen the neighbor lady today.
Elmore - The MRI results must be a relief!
-
I adore BRINGING UP BABY, but as I mentioned the first ones that popped in my head, they must have made the strongest impression.
Can't join the PORKY'S congregation, however. I was not amused. Just not my kind of comedy. ANIMAL HOUSE didn't hold a lot for me either, but I know both were wildly popular with others.
Now, LIFE OF BRIAN and MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL - now we're talkin'!
-
Those Presidential mock-ups were the things of nightmares. Thankfully, the four are men.
-
Not a lot of time this afternoon to watch a film (early rehearsals tonight to work on choreography), so I popped in some ROCKY & BULLWINKLE episodes and had myself a hearty laugh or ten.
-
Yes, DRPanni, it was quite a relief. I was not looking forward to back surgery at all!
-
Good news DR Elmore!
-
Good news DR Elmore!
Thank you, DRJennifer. How was your Thanksgiving?
-
DRD-I-T, if a waitress at any restaurant said to me "what'll you have, baldie," my answer would be either "your head on a plate" or "your job."
DR Elmer,
Some years ago the New Yorker ran an article by a former waiter. From what he said, I URGE you never to make a snappy comeback like that until after you get your food.
When I was in New York last year I went to Katz's Deli for the first time in ages. The restaurant has really caught on since "When Harry Met Sally." It was loaded with tourists. Not only that, but the waiters have mellowed - they were actually helpful. The pastrami was still great, but the place just wasn't the same.
-

DRD-I-T, I'm more an Elmo than Elmer, but after my answer about jobs or heads, I'm not certain I'd let the waiter pollute my meal by staying!
-

DR Elmore -
Sorry about the slip.
BTW - ticklish?
-
Movies already mentioned:
THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL
WHAT'S UP DOC?
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
Live Performances (also already mentioned):
An Evening With Dame Edna (I'm not exactly sure if this was the correct title, but I did see Dame Edna live in Seattle!)
Noises Off! (I never saw the movie, but a local theater company did it and it was hysterical!)
And a Very Happy Anniversary to DRs Noel and Joy!!
-
DR Elmore -
Sorry about the slip.
BTW - ticklish?
And pricklish!
-
Well, here's a howdy-do!
Our building didn't get mail today because the Post Office truck didn't deliver, or delivered to the wrong address, the bag of mail for our building, which is left in the postbox on the corner for the carrier to pick up. I'm in 202 West 82nd, and 200 and 204 received mail today. We've been shafted by Uncle Sam!
Am I angry? Betcha.
-
Whaddup dog? Having a strange day. Got the galley via PDF, and, of course, the only possible thing they could have screwed up they DID screw up. So, they're fixing it and I'll have it back tomorrow. The book proper looks great and is perfect - it was just the copyright page, the only page they had us leave blank. I sent them the copyright page exactly as we wanted it, what font, and all they had to do was do it -they didn't. So, they have to do it again. Utter fools.
-
Happy Anniversary to Joy and Noel!!!!
-
Dubya is in town for the debate tomorrow, and the traffic around the university is all tied up. Entire parking garages are closed down, which makes a mess for the students who need to get to class. Traffic is restricted around the resort where he'll be staying. I expect I'll just stay inside tomorrow, as security will be tight everywhere.
-
George congratulations on receiving the purple award-sounds like you deserved it.
Bruce you didn’t mention if Juliana loved Sullivan’s Travels, as I imagine she did.
JRand I don’t get the joke. ???
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY NOEL AND JOY! Gosh time flies. Did you do something very special today?
-
Elmore, so glad you a feeling better today. :D :D
DiT we ate at a restaurant near the Gershwin that wasn’t suggested as a deli and had high, Greek style like ceilings. It was deli food and the sign outside said they were famous for their blintzes, which is what we had. Since my friend has only eaten my blintzes she was disappointed and surprised how big they were.
RLP those pictures are hysterical. Kerry is one weird looking gal.
-
I often laugh hysterically at movies making it more difficult to recall the ones that made me laugh the hardest. Most often there are major scenes I laugh through, not the entire movie.
WALK DON’T RUN
WHAT’S UP DOC
SHALL WE DANCE
NOISES OFF
BRINGING UP BABY
BLAZING SADDLES, not so much anymore
MORGANs CREEK
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
THE COURT JESTER
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE
Does anyone remember the play ENTER LAUGHING?
-
Thanks for asking DR Elmore, but I didn't really do anything special for Thanksgiving. :(
-
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY NOEL AND JOY! Gosh time flies. Did you do something very special today?
Well, a lot: Read these delightful well-wishes on HHW, had lunch with my father, packed and came back home, dealt with a graphic crisis trying to get the cover of the CD of Our Wedding - The Musical to the folks at
Theatremania.com
and now we're off to a fancy Indian dinner near Lincoln Center.
It's possible we'll watch baseball at some point. Go Sox!
-
To continue my NY saga from Saturday's posts:
The last day of my NY adventure was also great fun. On Friday afternoon Penny met me at St Patrick’s Cathedral. I had already walked around the outside admiring it’s beauty. Together we went inside, just in time to hear the choir. Afterwards we went to Sacks and the Palace Hotel and just explored different hotels as we walked around. We stopped for a bite to eat, sitting outside on a bench. Later she walked me back to my hotel where I had just enough time to get ready for the evening. I met my nieces at a nice Indian Restaurant near the hotel.
Following dinner we walked to the theater. One of my nieces had not wanted to see MOVIN OUT but agreed since she was out numbered. She kept thanking me. The show was fantastic. The energy was incredible and the dancing amazing. I could go on and on. I saw two shows in NY and gave them both standing ovations-not bad. :D
Keith hasn’t had a free moment to put my photos on the computer-maybe tonight and I will post them tomorrow afternoon.
-
Noel, have a wonderful romantic dinner. What is the name of the restaurant?
-
So DRs Noel & Joy:
When will the CD of Our First Anniversary: the Musical be out?
Youth wants to know.
And so do I.
-
Yes, Juliana professed to love Sullivan's Travels. She laughed quite a bit throughout.
I certainly remember the film of Enter Laughing, which I always thought very funny, especially the performances of Elaine May and Jose Ferrer.
-
Shortly I will be on my way to the Dena of Pasa to see a show which I'm not really looking forward to. Maybe I'll be surprised.
-
Can't join the PORKY'S congregation, however. I was not amused. Just not my kind of comedy. ANIMAL HOUSE didn't hold a lot for me either, but I know both were wildly popular with others.
You know what? I'm not a fan of ANIMAL HOUSE, either. (and I do like Verna Bloom!)
(also, I first saw BRINGING UP BABY on a big screen, at a revival house).
-
Jane - I remember ENTER LAUGHING. And I enjoyed it and laughed (not on entering). I'm trying to remember the name of the actor who played the lead. Have to look it up.
I'm a sucker for stories about young actors starting out in the theater. If only they hadn't cast George Hamilton in ACT ONE!
-
Looked it up. Reni Santoni. I'd forgotten what a great cast it had. I want to see it again now.
-
You know what? I'm not a fan of ANIMAL HOUSE, either. (and I do like Verna Bloom!)
(also, I first saw BRINGING UP BABY on a big screen, at a revival house).
It was in 1979 right after seeing ANIMAL HOUSE I met Tom Hulce. On a scale of 10 I'd give him a 0.5.
-
The Dear Father and Stepmother have arrived from New York (Rockland County, actually) for a five-night visit.
They are unwinding right now, and we'll be staying in tonight. Tomorrow night we'll stay at home again and watch the debate. Thursday it'll be Miss Melissa Manchester at the Cinegrill, Friday it'll be Alma at the Los Angeles Theatre, and on Saturday it'll be the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall. They leave on Sunday.
I will check in and post as I can!
-
I do like PORKY'S, and along with it, ANIMAL HOUSE is one of the great slob comedies of all time. Watched AH just recently and it still makes me laugh in all the same places. Apropos of that, BK & I saw Mr. Stephen Furst (AKA Flounder), a bit slimmer than in his animal halcyon days, holdng court at the Ray Court show. He was the recepient of one of my favourite lines uttered by Dean Wormer: "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son."
-
Bruce do you recall going on evening field trips with the high school drama class? Three events stand out in my mind. The first was the play ENTER LAUGHING and I remember it was very funny. Like Panni I wish I knew who played the lead. Did you go to that with us? The second was Marcel Marceau live where I laughed hysterically. The third memorable event was not a comedy but a film of the stage production of OTHELO with James Earl Jones. I’m still looking for a copy of that.
-
Wow, it seems like we've been on Page Three WAY too long.
-
DR Jane, I'm SO glad you and your nieces loved MOVIN OUT.
Saw the movie School of Rock tonight. Liked it (although for me it got a lot better in the second half).
With baseball on FOX I have little to watch on tv these days. Since we don't get the WB, our FOX station carries all the shows (usually at 10pm). But with baseball, they've been delayed by 2 hours. The VCR is good for this.
So I will have to wait till tomorrow to watch my favorite Gilmore Girls.
-
Jennifer I was very relieved. I wouldn’t have felt too bad if they hadn’t since I treated. My niece got us house seats and they were PERFECT. :D
We were pleasantly surprised with HOUSE OF ROCK. :)
-
I've a couple of days notes to catch up on.
In the meantime, we've been having some fun here in Rehoboth.
Der Brucer found a store on Highway One that sells sheet music and books of scores and such. He hasn't played his piano seriously since I've known him, going on nineteen years, but he was bound and determined to find some new music, and maybe get some incentive to get the ol' upright tuned again (something that hasn't been done in about a decade or so, not to mention a cross-country move).
He ended up with something like nine books of Broadway piano and vocals. He also promised himself to come back the next day, after posing a question to me.
I don't know why he bothered, because I can recognize when he's got that need to do something. He did not need to ask my permission to buy an electronic keyboard.
It has doodads and gizmos I can't even begin to guess at. There's a CD player/recorder involved, I think. There's a way to program rhythm sections. The black keys are blue for some reason.
He has a new toy.
-
And we have a new place to hang out, on occasion.
There was a restaurant/bar in town called Harlow's, which had a very tired menu and a very tired clientelle. In the vernacular, it was what is called a "wrinkle room." Use your imaginations.
During the earlier parts of summer, there was a major re-paving program on the Boulevard right in front of Harlow's, which can't have done it's business any good. And it didn't do much better business when the street reopened during the summer season. Harlow's closed.
It has been replaced by a new restaurant/bar called Partners, which doesn't aim terribly high with it's menu (figure a 10/15$ range for most of the items) but does what it does very well. They were having their grand opening this weekend, and were packed beyond what the kitchen could easily handle.
They also have a piano bar running during the weekends, which is a nice change of pace; this town hasn't had one of those for some time, it seems. Nothing cutting edge from the player/singer on Saturday when we went (meaning, no JRB), but quite pleasant.
We headed back on Monday, for happy hour and to check on some details. Der B got to chatting with one of the new owners, which prompted a second Manhattan for each of us, to give an excuse to continue the chat.
Then disaster struck, in a sense. A fellow we had met the week previous at another watering hole in town showed up, and it was impossible to stop the earlier conversation from continuing. That led to a third Manhattan for each of us.
Now, I've at least grabbed a basket of munchies, the over-salted bar nibbles, to absorb some of what I'm drinking. Der Brucer was too busy talking, however. And then our hail-fellow called over another fellow that he had well met, an interior design consultant named Eddie. Say hello to Manhattan number four.
I'm just amazed that der B was able to recognize when Eddie made a none-too-well disguised pass at the both of us. In fact, der B was rather amused, if disinclined.
I'm also amazed that I was able to fix us dinner when we got home, a chicken and dumplings affair that had der B asking for seconds :o.
I hope that answers any questions about libations. And about why I didn't post yesterday.

Time to catch up on the last couple of days.
-
Because rehearsals have been running longer right up to opening night, I haven't been able to see much TV, and I haven't been recording anything that's in high definition since my DVR only records standard definition (like tonight's SCRUBS which I'll watch tomorrow).
But I will be breaking that little pact with myself for one show: tomorrow night's LOST which is, solely among this year's new shows, the only one that is must-see for me.
-
"Sleepers" -- especially the scene in which Woody has disguised himself as a robot and is passing around the pleasure ball.
The scene where I WHAT?
Dang, I wish I could remember these things. Must've had too many Manhattans.
::)
-
And the piece de resistance among the What Ifs:
Great pics...definately in the running for hardest laugh I've had in a while.
-
A very happy anniversary to DRs Noel and Joy!!!
I can't think of any movies that were meant as comedies and caused me to burst into insane bouts of hysterical laughter, but I'm sure there are many. The play "For Whom The Southern Belle Tolls" had that affect on me when I first saw it. Actually, many Durang plays cause me to laugh so hard that I fear I might die.

Good Evening!
What a totally "Ex-" day!
Exciting
Exhilirating
Exhausting
I got the rehearsal hall about two hours before rehearsal started so that I could get some practicing in. Good practice, and I've learned which keys on the piano are not "regulated" - it's actually quite a hard piano to play. But I only have to play it for a few more days since we move into the theatre this weekend(!).
At 1:00, I took "class" with the cast. Baayork's "warm-up" runs just about an hour, and includes a bit of everything: aerobics, stretching, ballet, Tae-Bo, Pilates... and LOTS of crunches - at least 200! It's been a good year since I've taken "class", but I survived it. I have definitely lost some flexibility over the past couple of months, but I was able to keep with the pace. However, about a half hour after class ended, as I was sitting at the piano playing through the Opening, I could start to feel my abs "burning" and contracting. I had to stand up and stretch every couple of minutes to feel comfortable. -But, as they say, it's a "good burn". However, I will be taking some Tylenol before heading to bed, and making sure I'm hydrated too. I know I'm going to be sore in the morning since I'm already a little sore now.
It was a great first day for me. We ran some of the big numbers: The Opening, "Music and the Mirror", and a couple of the Montages. And we even had the pit drummer for a few hours.
The cast is really wonderful. There are some ACL veterans in the cast, as well as some total newbies, but it's a great bunch of people. -There are even some 18-19-year olds, and they've picked up the steps very fast.
At the dinner break, I wandered around the area for a little bit. Lots of buildings! And actually a pretty nice downtown area. The only thing that seems to be lacking - and this is something that a bunch of people have pointed out - is a Starbucks - and other food places - near the theatres and office buildings. ??? Apparently, with all the huge corporate office towers, they all have their own cafeterias. Additionally, there is a whole underground tunnel system too.
In any case, I decided to give the Angelika Film Cafe a try, and I had a nice meal. A kind of Vietnamese pork burger - ground pork seasoned with garlic and lemongrass. Very good. The bun was on the dry side, but the french fries were very good.
Then it was back to rehearsal for some cleaning sessions - or "gardening tips" as we've grown to call them.
Baayork's and Fran's passion for the piece is still there, and very inspiring. And the level of commitment from the cast is quite refreshing too.
Well... I'm tired, and I think I'm gonna go soak in the tub for a bit...
Laters...

Jane - Reni Santoni played the young Reiner in ENTER LAUGHING.

Where is everyone? I'm watching Aladdin and playing with my sugar gliders...they are so very sweet...

Dear Jose: The "fried chicken place" that got the write-up in Gourmet is Frenchy's Chicken. 3919 Scott Street, 713-748-2233.
Knowing you, you'll also want to check out The Chocolate Bar, 1835 West Alabama Street, 713-520-8599. ;)

This evening's top news story is that Dubya ate a blue corn turkey enchilada for dinner. And according to sources, he left a tip that was well over twenty percent.
-
All alone and at and heading for an ATL...
-
Whatever shall I...
-
...do?
-
I guess I could talk about hilarious movies...
-
Mind you, people have been doing that all day.
-
So it would be redundant...
-
...repetitive...
-
...and Republican. No! That's a mistake.
-
I don't write about things Republican.
-
Being a Canadian, I really should be writing about things Liberal, Conservative and...
-
...New Democratic. But I haven't lived in Canada for many years...
-
So I have nothing to say about Canuck politics.
-
Maybe somebdody else will show up and post.
-
...Or maybe not. I'll check in later, before midnight.
-
But maybe first I'll brings us up to...
-
...120. I like round numbers.
-
And one for Mahler.

What is WITH this week? Nothing but WUSSBURGERS in the evenings. Skammen, I say, and say again.
-
Still under the weather.
But did not want you to miss out on the Allison Hayes picture of the week:
The original VHS release of her most famous role:
-
Back from the Pasadena Playhouse and must now hurry to write notes.
-
WeLL MRBK - I finally located my partial tape of tv's VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. It is only the last 90 minutes so you miss all of Jean Simmons as Helen Lawson and MOST of Bert Convy as Tony Polar.
But if you want to see the last 90 minutes - I can make you a copy.
-
Perhaps I won't post them tonight, just to be in the spirit of the WUSSBURGERS.
-
Our houseguest, Zeus, has decided that my bed is his bed.
It would be a lot easier, of course, if he would only take up, say, half of the bed.
Or, say, if the half of the bed he is taking up weren't the middle half, with a quarter on one side and a quarter on the other.
Some houseguests, I guess, just don't know how to be good houseguests.
*sigh*
-
If you want a "This morning I went for a walk" photo, I must get some sleep tonight so I can get up early in the morning.
-
but some of us are waiting
-
DRJANE - the joke is that Hermes who taught Ginger dances for all those years with Fred - a pulled most of his hair out doing it.....and then there's Gower trying to teach her the DOLLY choreography and thinking it would be easy.....or something like that.
-
Feel better, JRand!
-
For anyone who's interested, there will be a special about wine on the Food Network this upcoming Sunday.
Yeah, yeah, big deal.
Only this one is being hosted by John Cleese.
There is no advance word yet on whether he'll cover how to serve wine to a Black Knight who has lost all of his limbs. (That's a Holy Grail reference.)
-
Hey, I resent the Wussburger accusation! I was talking to myself for a page.
-
Somebody get us past the dreaded 136.
-
Almost there...
-
My work here is....
-
SWoody, as someone who has fostered animals for shelters over the years, it is certain that you will keep one or two of your fosters that are not really adoptable.
-
...DONE. Now I can go back to filling out rent applications.

Hopefully, der B and I will soon have a report about a new restaurant that just opened a few miles north of us.
It's a Japanese restaurant, called Tokyo. All we know is that it took quite a while for the building it is in to be built, and that they'll be specializing in teppan and sushi.
Hey, for some people this stuff is cutting edge.
:-\
(When I crave sushi, I think I'd rather head to a place downtown called Abstractions. Even der B likes it.)
-
Interesting restaurant story DRSWW - you must have had on your come and get me shoes.
