Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Kritzerland at Sterling's 58, and now it is time for you to post until the 58 cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ANTIMACASSAR!
-
Glad that the show went so well, bk. I always love reading about them!
-
Nice cast photo, too.
-
TOD:
Company, from my parent's LP collection. I then quickly graduated to other Sondheim show LPs from the public library.
-
Soon to depart for a long drive. I have to be at a hospital far, far away from here for a 7:00 am presentation. I'm the presenter.
-
Good morning! Thanks for the birthday wishes!
-
BK,
Congrats on the successful show.
-
TOD:
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC was the first Sohdheim show I saw on stage.
I'd previously seen the film versions of GYPSY and WEST SIDE STORY.
-
Good morning, all! I have to leave shortly. Today I kill off Toyland and shut the door on it. It's a bit sad, but it isn't as if I didn't know this was coming for the past year.
I'm happy to hear the show went well. I did not expect to hear otherwise. I love Kerry O'Malley.
-
We finished watching the final season of JUSTIFIED last night.
Terrific series. If you've never seen it, it's well worth your time.
-
Best wishes today DR elmore.
-
Congratulations on yet another great show!
-
Well, so far I've had about ninety minutes of sleep. You'd think I'd learn the lesson of not to eat at Little Toni's anymore - or at least stay away from the pizza - there is something in there red sauce and that topped with the butter just makes it impossible for me to digest the food there - it just site in a lump in my stomach and it feels like I've topped off.
-
And the word of the day is: ANTIMACASSAR!
The wife of UncleMacassar
-
Good morning to all
-
TOD
I first experienced him from the film West Side Story.
Next was when I played L.A. in Gypsy.
But I became obsessed when I saw Sweeney Todd on Broadway. I wanted to hear and see everything he ever did.
-
Good morning, all.
Vibes to Ginny, Cillaliz and all in need.
-
TOD: I was 12 or 13 when I first heard A Little Night Music and fell for it instantly. I had known Forum and West Side Story before that, but I had no idea who wrote it. With Night Music, I absorbed everything about Sondheim I could get to that point.
-
Congrats on a great show, BK.
-
And the word of the day is: ANTIMACASSAR!
I learned this word from Cole Porter in the song Pets:
Some are amassers of antimacassars and others Victorian lamps ...
-
George, thanks for posting the cover of the Don't Play Us Cheap album. I had that ages ago. Probably still have the vinyl, though the cover got destroyed in the great flood. The movie was filmed on a stage set that looked like a theater with no fourth wall. According to the extras on the disc, Van Peebles staged it after making the movie.
-
Vixmom, I'm headed to Maui on Thursday. My friend has her timeshare, and to quote Ado Annie, I cain't say no.
-
Happy birthday, Cole Porter.

Maui?? Wowie!! :)
Have a wonderful time, DR John G., and

Tuesday morning greetings! Takin' it slow this morning after having to be up and out Sunday and yesterday. I have a bunch of errands to do today, but nothing with a time schedule.
-
Good morning, all.
A nice sleep, and a couple of silly dreams I could have done without.
Coffee!
-
Sounds like a wonderful show, BK. Would love to hear a few of those numbers, but especially Glitter and Be Gay.
-
Godspeed, DR Elmore! Say goodbye for me, and finish 'er off with one clean bullet.
Long live Toyland!

More {{{{{Hugs}}}}} for DR Elmore!
Onward, dear friend, onward...
-
Glad to hear about the success of the Kritzerland show....and a lovely photo, too.
-
I first encountered Mr. Sondheim when I saw the movie version of GYPSY. Then I saw the movie version of WEST SIDE STORY.....
The first Sondheim LP I purchased was the COMPANY OBC......then I started to look for things and wait for things.....
-
TOD - the first Sondheim lyric I remember hearing was my Dad quoting, "If you wanna bump it, bump it with a trumpet," after he an my Mom saw GYPSY pre-Broadway in Detroit. Of course, I didn't know who wrote it, but the GYPSY and WEST SIDE STORY cast albums were household staples (I still have them...)
I guess it was in college when I really became aware of Stephen Sondheim as an entity, probably with COMPANY.
-
And the word of the day is: ANTIMACASSAR!
And The Song Of The Day Is: IN MY OWN LITTLE CORNER
-
TOD:
Not a show, but Ethel Merman. As a child, I would see her on TV, the days of the great variety shows, and she was one of my favorites. She could just open up and belt it all out. No fuss, no muss, and all in. She was my introduction into Sondheim, among many others. When I became more aware of his name, I realized that WEST SIDE STORY was co-written by Sondheim. Yes, GYPSY and FORUM, but I've had more fondness for SWEENEY TODD and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.
I was curious about COMPANY because the book was written by the ubiquitous character actor George Furth who was in everything from THE MONKEES to MURDER, SHE WROTE. He was one of the many Johnsons in BLAZING SADDLES.
Compared with everyone else, I am a greenhorn when it comes to musicals. I know many of the songs that wound up being part of the repertoire of "standards".
[As an aside, my parents had friends who for many years would vacation at the Mohonk Resort atop the Hudson. They were lovable people, but would be clueless who they were hobnobbing with. They had an unintentional ongoing friendship with Sammy Cahn and Werner Klemperer. My parents friends would eventually figure things out, but the friendships were truly accidental, not forced. Then, they would run into them everywhere they (separately) went.]

The door is shut. Toyland is dead.
-
Thanks for the hugs and vibes! I am home, and I just cancelled the office's internet service via email, per their request. I left the keys behind and they are no longer in my possession.
I guess my first Sondheim was the discovery of the cast albums of GYPSY and WEST SIDE STORY around 1982 at the Middletown Public Library. My first real notice of Sondheim was 1965 when I discovered the libretto of A FUNNY THING HAPPENED . . . at the Miami University library. We were translating Plautus' Menaechmi in Latin - I was a Latin major, and my wonderful teacher Robert Kane - who grew up in Manhattan and had seern the original 1956 production of CANDIDE - told me I might find A FUNNY THING . . a lot of fun. While we were reading Plautus, he played the class the Columbia Jack Cassidy-Portia Nelson recording of THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE. I loved that man and his classes. Best. Teacher. Ever.
-
BK, Congrats on Kritzerland 58! And that's a great picture of you all! ;D
-
The door is shut. Toyland is dead.
R.I.P.
-
Vixmom, I'm headed to Maui on Thursday. My friend has her timeshare, and to quote Ado Annie, I cain't say no.
Wow! Can't pass that up at all! Have a great time, John!
-
I guess my first Sondheim would be the cast albums to GYPSY and WEST SIDE STORY, too, but I daresay I was taking no notice of who the librettist was since it was the music that blew me away at that tender age. So, the first actual all-Sondheim show to take its place in my life? I have to say I don't really know for sure, but I believe it was SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, via the recording and via buying it twice -- on LP and on this newfangled thing called CD -- thanks to rave reviews.
I don't know why I let all the earlier ones kind of pass me by in those years, but it just happened that later on, in the 1990s and 2000s, FORUM and COMPANY and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC are the ones I had to sit down and learn because I was doing local productions of them. (I passed on a wonderful little SWEENEY TODD because I didn't want to devote another consecutive summer to a musical.) Anyhoo, ever since then, it's been Ketchup Time with the other shows.
-
The door is shut. Toyland is dead.
DR elmore, may the memories live on, and you move successfully forward to new and productive ventures.
-
BK, congratulations on a successful show!
-
Good morning.

Farewell, My Concubine.....

My first Sondheim was probably the cast album of Gypsy. I'm not sure I'd heard the cast album of West Side Story prior to seeing the movie, whose soundtrack I obviously had. I do remember hearing A Funny Thing when it came out, but my first real love affair was Anyone Can Whistle, which someone at my local record store recommended to me.
-
I never got any more sleep - so ninety minutes is not enough. Hopefully I'll doze off later.
-
It certainly isn't! Sheesh! :P
-
BK inspires a correction:
I said cast album automatically, but my first WEST SIDE STORY was the soundtrack LP and then the film itself. At some point not long thereafter, I got the Symphonic Dances and cast albums, but my allegiance was to the film because it was already in my blood. Now, of course, I view stage and film versions as two separate and wonderful things.

I don't leave until Thursday morning. Physically, that is. I think I'm gone already.

I shall soon be on my way to the Act Two run thru.

My friends at HHW are so funny!
You so funny. Me love you long time.
To quote former DR Miss Karen.

We just had one of the most intense passing thunderstorms ever. It surely ranks within my top dozen or so. I was out driving across town on a couple of errands, and streets and sidewalks were instantly flooding. (Fortunately, it didn't come in the windows I left open at the house.) Really an amazing display from Ma Nature.

Did anyone besides me watch MAJOR CRIMES last night?
I am so sleepy. Tomorrow I can sleep in. Sounds good.
DR JohnG, did I miss it? Where are you traveling now?
-
I did sleep about two more hours - it's gardener day so pretty noisy.
-
Good evening!
-
Just finished watching Lincoln on our old VCR, after lunch we went to go see an autoshow in Bancroft. For dinner, we're going out to our daughters wedding. It's the third time we saw her since her wedding because she went away for a while.
-
Good eve, Kevin!
-
I didn't know that the all-male Twelfth Night (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T40NVIK) with Mark Rylance and Stephen Fry (among others) had been filmed and is available for purchase! I just ordered it! :D
-
I am not even going to pretend I'm sorry that GIGI is closing. I'm sorry for my friend Greg, who's conducting, but it was a travesty of Alan Jay Lerner's screenplay.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
Well, I'm off to the Washington Center for the Performing Arts' Volunteer Appreciation Dinner! They're also announcing their next season...and they've already announced that Patti LuPone is coming! I can't wait!!** :D
Be back later!
**Although, I know that if presented with the option, some of you could. ;)
-
Guess what's happening here?
IT'S RAINING!! Granted, it's a light rain, off and on all day, but when you're in a severe drought every bit helps. The plants will appreciate it.
-
AND it's muggy. But it's not bad.

Ditto to that, too. I feel rather saddened by it, but know that you'll have lots of stories from your next adventure.

I had a blood draw this morning, then came home and worked on some tax stuff. How's that for fun? Actually, it's just nice to not have any appointments and take my sweet time with things.
-
TOD:
WEST SIDE STORY, the film. BK would not stop singing GEE, OFFICER KRUPKE, so I had to see the movie. And I loved the song--then and now.
-
BTW, IMHO, 7 am meetings are most uncivilized!
I'm going to file a paypal dispute!

I shall listen to the rain, knowing it's NOT my white-noise machine with nature sounds.

It is hard to function on very little sleep, sadly I am very familiar with this difficulty. It is even worse when it happens many days in a row. Knowing you I am sure you will make up for the lost sleep.

We watched it :)

Safe, easy, and fun travel vibes for DR John.
Thank you, all. Now, if I can survive one more day at the office ... (Not that there's anything wrong at the office, it's just that I'm really mentally already in Maui.)
-
Took the night off from dancing to pack. Let's see if I actually do that.
-
Miley Cyrus strikes again. What a horrifying young woman she is and I really don't need to see her disgusting grooming habits in the lower area - what a role model for young people this cretin is. Shame on her. Someone sent me a NY Times article the other day saying that thongs were on their way out and that normal underpants had finally become hip again and were making a strong comeback. That was music to my ears and now if we can just get this disgusting preponderance of people and their grooming habits in which they do everything possible to look like a pre-pubescent child, that will be music to my ears. I has spoken.
-
I am quite out of it.
-
Out of it quite I am.
-
I know Pogue agrees with me wholeheartedly on the grooming issue - we've been ranting about it for a decade now.
-
And I wish we had recordings of it because it was pretty hilarious.
-
I'm really quite out of it right now.
-
Page four? Really?

Who here knew that the wonderful Elizabeth Moss, Peggy on Mad Men, played Baby June in the Bette Midler TV version of Gypsy? Not me. I've got to go find the DVD now.

Hmm, I have that on videotape...
-
My copy is a VHS promo or some such, found at a library sale.

I wonder if the player is connected.
Well, it should be, and if not, it damned well will be forthwith. I still have a couple of dozen tapes to go through...

That would make sitting through part of that version almost bearable.

THE SIMPSONS have parodied the Jack Lemmon schlemiel character so memorably as Good Ol' Gil, sometimes can't watch any Lemmon pictures. Some haven't dated well either.
-
I don't remember the film of Good Neighbor Sam at all - I did see it a few times, but it's really a blank - I did enjoy the Jack Finney novel on which it's based, which I read prior to seeing the film back in the day.
-
Did I say Baby June? I meant Baby Louise as in Sing out, Louise. Apparently she was on West Wing, too, as a child.

I can see where it would be a blank. It's OK, and a nice relic of its time and the mores of the era, but it gets by on a lot of charm and little else.

Has anyone seen Polanski's "What?" I'm curious to know if it's worth a look-see.

Tod. I cannot remember a time when I did not know the entire score to west side story and forum. My dad had the albums and played them all the time... I don't know that I knew the name Sondheim. I saw a production of company in college and fell in love played The album over and over (borrowed from the library. Who had money to spend $3 for the obc?

Well, the WCPA 2015-2016 season was announced to the people who attended the volunteer appreciation dinner. The mashed potato bar was very good. They also had a salad bar with lots of toppings for either the salad or the mashed potatoes. I really hope that they consider doing that again next year...but that's just me.
-
Although, it's not been officially advertised yet, a few of the highlights include: Momix Dance, Seattle Rock Orchestra Tribute to Pink Floyd, a return to the WCPA of Hal Holbrook's Mark Twain Tonight!, David Sedaris, Celtic Nights, Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, Travis Tritt, Portland Cello Project's "Bach, Brubeck and Beck," The Producers (national tour),"Post Secret" public arts project, Saturday Night Fever (national tour), Arlo Guthrie, The Kingston Trio, and a newly discovered silent Sherlock Holmes movie that was just discovered last year. :D

Did I say Baby June? I meant Baby Louise as in Sing out, Louise. Apparently she was on West Wing, too, as a child.
I remember reading about Lacey Chabert when she got older, that she started playing more sex-pot roles after playing young and innocent roles when she was young and innocent. I don't remember ever reading about Elizabeth Moss playing Baby Louise. I think I would've remembered that. I first heard of Elizabeth Moss from the TV show, "Invasion." I remember her because at that same time, she was in some Excedrin commercials and I kept saying, that's the girl from "Invasion."
-
And since we're so close...
-
Do I tell our Lacey Chabert story in Album Produced By? She was the original duet partner with Liz Callaway on Inchworm. She was in Les Miz at the time singing Castle in the Clouds. She came in, sang, and both Liz and I were just not happy with that kind of voice - we wanted something much more natural and real. I can't remember the second person we had, but we didn't like her either, and I finally ended up with a non-pro here in LA recommended by Muse Margaret.

Finished with my viewing.

What is her real hair color, I wonder. Very dark on Mad Men, very blonde at the Tonys and somewhere in between in the Excedrin image above.

As they sing in Dreamgirls, "Show biz, it's just show biz."

I always assume that it's never as dark as it's ever been, nor ever as light as it's ever been. Usually it seems to be some dishwater brown color.
-
As for the Topic of the Day: the first Sondheim project that I ever experienced, or remember experiencing, was my sister and I watching the movie version of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" when we were kids.
-
Later, when I was in middle school, I was watching the Tony Awards (before I really realized exactly what it was all about) and someone sang a bit of "Some People" from Gypsy as part of a big medley:
"Get yourself some new orchestrations, new routines and red velvet curtains
Get a feathered hat for the baby, photographed in front of the theater
Get an agent and in jig time, you'll be being booked in the big time"
The lyrics and that rhythmic pattern were pretty cool to my fairly inexperienced ears.
-
Anyway, I did some searching at the local library and found out that it was from Gypsy, so I checked out a record (I think it was the Angela Lansbury recording). I loved it. I had started to get into musicals at this point, so I was checking out different recordings.
-
One time, I had to write a report on geothermal energy and I wanted to listen to something as I
copied wrote my report, so on a whim, I checked out Ain't Misbehavin' and Sweeney Todd, which also had Angela Lansbury. Talk about two different kinds of shows, but I loved them both.
-
I think the next Sondheim recording that I discovered was A Little Night Music, but even though I had loved all of these going back to me first hearing Gypsy, I didn't realize that Sondheim had also written the score to Forum that I used to watch when I was a kid. It wasn't until I was in high school and really discovered musicals that I made the connection...and realized the difference between the movie score and the Broadway score. :-\
