George - Does that revised tip policy make them get fewer concession people willing to put in the effort?  Or does that have nothing to do with what the concession people do it for?

I had a nightmare about a lady who is doing most of the music copying in New York these days.  We were rather good friends between 1985 and 1995, but she's become an unpleasant lady to deal with as her work load grew.  I did not enjoy my last job with her at all.  I have no idea why she showed up in a dream.

Sunday morning greetings!  I woke up more than an hour before I needed to, so there's probably a nap in my future this afternoon.  The AAUW convention ends before lunch and most people are leaving today.

That was one solid mass of rain we had yesterday and all last night.  I guess it's close to clearing out of here, which is good for me as I'll be on the road.  It was something else, though.  Good riddance to it.

HAPPY DAD'S DAY!

The latest Broadway Radio Show is now up on the site for your listening pleasure.  This time I am interviewing Justin "Squigs" Robertson -- artist and actor, who many have called the worthy successor to the late, great Al Hirschfeld for his wonderful sketches of Broadway shows and performers.  Check out the show and the radio page also contains a clickable sample of his work as well as a link to his website where you can purchase prints (I already own 2 of them myself!).  ENJOY!!!

DR GEORGE - taking money from volunteers to pay for their own party seems a bit much to me.....sounds like a Board decision from a bunch of selfish people who have no appreciation for the FREE help they're getting.

Does anyone in the group that made the decision EVER work concessions?  My guess is - NO!

Well, just as I'd topped off the gas tank and acquired a cold drink for sipping in the car -- I was literally five minutes from getting on the highway -- I got a call that the family get-together is called off due to illness.  We have to reschedule.  So...

I'M STILL HERE.

Oops, sorry, forgot to log out when I left for this morning's sessions.  The 2015 AAUW National Convention is now history and they've announced that we'll be in Washington, DC, in 2017.  Nita is flying back to Ohio today and I'm about to join her for a send-off lunch.  After that - a nap for me.

Bye for now.

We are back from a lovely Fathers Day luncheon.  We went to the roadhouse where we were able to walk right in and be seated.  By time we were walking out the crowds had descended .  Then we went for little drive then stopped at Carvel for ice cream before coming home

Singdaw, did you like Between You and Me? The book about the New Yorker's comma queen?

I've started listening to her read it on CD. So far, about a half hour, has been fun. But I'm wondering where it's going to go. Well, that's the fun of books, isn't it?

The guy who runs our local Farmers Market has been emailing me because I've been expressing my distaste with his decision to ban religious music from the market.  It's all over a specific musician, but he didn't just ban the musician, he stopped everyone else from singing anything religious....we're talking Amazing Grace here.   Anyway he's being a bit dramatic in his messages and emails.  I told him this was about him and the article in the paper about it and not about me.   He didn't seem to like that

I'm just stirring things up.  I didn't start it and I'm sure it will blow over, but seriously, I think it's ridiculous.  So a folk singer can't do Amazing Grace, an instrumentalist can't do some classical religious song, what on earth difference does that make.  I guess it was his comparison of religious music to profanity that really made me mad

Thanks.  I had all kinds of intentions for this afternoon - Balboa Park, Coronado, a bay cruise - but decided I needed some down time.  There's still a week and a half to go for this trip and it's too soon to wear myself out.

Besides, I'd rather do all of those things with Richard, so we'll have to come back to San Diego together sometime.

Yummy meat. The place was new so there were some kinks in the service, but that was probably more because it was Father's Day and packed.

We had another torrential downpour tonight that could have easily turned into flash flooding. Saw a street suddenly covered with three or four inches of flowing water all the way from one side to the other. I half except to see fish swimming in it, too, it was moving so fast.

When we have flooding in the Spring, we often have salmon on the highway trying to swim upstream.

Apparently, it did little but rain all week while I was away. There was standing water under the fig tree. And the grass is growing way high.

All my experiments in Darwinian gardening (I plant it and it's up to the plant to survive) are really happy with the rain right now.

We are back from a lovely Fathers Day luncheon.  We went to the roadhouse where we were able to walk right in and be seated.  By time we were walking out the crowds had descended .  Then we went for little drive then stopped at Carvel for ice cream before coming home

Take me straight to Carvel's!!!!!

Well, just as I'd topped off the gas tank and acquired a cold drink for sipping in the car -- I was literally five minutes from getting on the highway -- I got a call that the family get-together is called off due to illness.  We have to reschedule.  So...

I'M STILL HERE.

I hope the illness isn't anything serious.  Good thing you weren't on the road yet.

I don't like have religion forced on me, but really those are classics and people can walk away if they don't care for the music.

There is a difference between having religion forced on you and saying no one can sing religious songs. Many folk songs are religious.  Does it include America the Beautiful?  Would God Bless America not be allowed during the 4th of July weekend?  If there was a problem with one individual, then deal with that individual, but to say no religious songs and equating them with profanity by saying "if he would have been swearing I would have asked him to stop too" is way out of line in my opinion

George - Does that revised tip policy make them get fewer concession people willing to put in the effort?  Or does that have nothing to do with what the concession people do it for?

I don't know if we have fewer concessionaires because of it.  I know a few people have just gotten too old and some others have moved, but there have been people on both sides of the issue.  Some are (a little) upset that they no longer get to keep the tips, and others are happy that it's probably more fair for everyone (even those who never worked concessions ::) ).

As of today, the paperback edition of LANA & JOHNNY WERE LOVERS is ranked #1 in Amazon's "Hot New Releases in Playwriting," and the Kindle edition is #6.  These rankings change daily, but I will enjoy this while it lasts.

 :P

As far as I know, no one on the board has ever volunteered for the WCPA on the front lines.  But I don't know if the decision came from the board itself, or the supervisor of the volunteer coordinator, or someone in between.

I can see when people are upset if concessionaires get the extra perk of cash and then be able to leave after intermission, when the ushers have to stay for the whole event and can work just as hard.  I guess I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other...although it was nice getting a few dollars here and there.  AND we get broken cookies.  Can't sell the broken cookies. ;)

I'm not a fan of religious (or even "spiritual") song lyrics, but I wouldn't care if I'm in a public place and it's playing.  I can very easily ignore it or go somewhere else.  I'm sure that there is a lot of music that I like that offends other people.

Why can't we all just get along??

Watching a version of Trouble in Tahiti. I don't think I've ever watched or heard this before.

I have a couple of recordings and (had?) a couple of DVDs.  I really enjoy this short opera.  Do you know (or know about) Bernstein's "A Quiet Place"?  It's a follow-up.  "Trouble in Tahiti" is interpolated into "A Quiet Place" as a flashback.  I've only listened to "A Quiet Place" once...maybe twice.  I'm not a fan of 12-tone (or similarly abstract melodies), but I like the idea of it being a sequel to a much earlier opera.  I wonder if the libretto reads enough like a script and could be done (if not legitimately) as a play, but still with the opera flashback.
