Title: FRUIT

Well, you've read the notes, the notes have fruitified you, and now it is time to post until the fruity cows come home.

I used to love wearing cherries as earrings when I was a child. You know -- two cherries on a stem hung over your ears. Very fetching.

I love apple and lemon turnovers.

Wait, that came out strangely.  I love apple turnovers, and lemon turnovers.  That's better.

Der Brucer is more of a cherry man than I am, and he loves fresh peaches in season.

Duck is almost always served with some kind of fruit sauce, the tangier the better.

And Chinese sweet-and-sour sauce needs that pineapple component, or it doesn't taste right.  Goes great with chicken or pork or shrimp.

Applesauce is a natural pairing with pork, too.

I came across an interesting applesauce variation recently, from chef Ming Tsai.  Cut a small red onion into 1/4 inch dice, saute over medium heat in a medium skillet with 2 T. vegetable oil.  After eight or ten minutes, when the onions have browned, add 1 1/2 t. five spice powder (a mixture of cinnamon, fennel, anise, ginger, and clove, generally found in the Oriental section of the market), 1 T. brown sugar, 2 Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and again cut into 1/4 inch dice), and 1 cup apple juice.  Season with salt and pepper to taste, and cook until the liquid is reduced by half, about 12 minutes.  The apples should still be recognizable as diced apples.  Stir in 1 T. butter, and correct the seasonings.

(I'm thinking of serving this with ham.  Now all I need is to decide on a good starch, like garlic and chive mashed taters.)

Tomatoes are also a fruit, by the way, but sharing tomato ideas might be better for another day.

I've never been particularly fruity either.  I can eat apples, oranges, grapes (green preferably), bananas, strawberries, pineapple, maybe or two other things, but it's rarely something I go after on my own.  If it's in front of me, I'll nibble.  And every once in a while in a ill-fated, short-lived nod to health, I might actually procure some.  Most of my fruit comes in the form of fruit juices.  I know I should eat more, but...

Woody, I love everything that comes from tomatoes, but tomatoes...tomato sauce, tomato juice, ketchup...but the tomato itself is hard for me to swallow, so to speak.

I've never been fond of any form of melon either.

We have two lemons trees in our backyard.  Most of them rot, before they're ever plucked.  I don't even like a slice of lemon with my diet coke.   and though I'll eat it, lemon pie is not something I'll go out of my way for.

My grandfather had several lemon trees in his back yard, resulting in several bags of lemons in our garage each year.  These, in turn, resulted in many lemon merangue pies from my mother, which he loved.

She was also good at turning pomegranate juice into the most amazing jelly.  I got to juice the pomegranates every year, from the bushes in our yard.

Melons?  I grind fresh pepper on them, a taste I acquired from said grandfather.  They're also great with proscuitto.

What else to do with lemons...Well, there's veal picatta, or the picatta variations with chicken or pork (since veal is pricy and many people object to it on principle).  I use the juice for the sauce, as well as the freshly grated zest.

For that matter, a lemon and oil dressing on salads can be a lot more interesting than oil and vinegar.  And the zest works here, too.

Lemons....lemonade, lemon slices, and lemon meringue pies are all favorites of mine.

Fried apples are also very good.

I also have had a grape pie, which was interesting.

Frankly, I find the cherry garnish in a Manhattan totally unnecessary.

But der Brucer does insist on having two olives in his gin martini, when he has one.  Olives are a fruit, aren't they?

Good morning, all!  So it's a fruit day?  I try to have a banana at least once a week because I was told they're full of potassium, which is good for preventing charley horses.  I go through crazes:  fresh granny smiths for a while, then fresh kiwi. fresh plums, and I never turn down a grape, green or purple.

Cooked, I prefer pastry:  apple pie being a favorite, but my mother's family had the recipe and I find nothing as good in New York, except the Little Pie Company comes closest.  Baked apples are wonderful, too.

Lemon is great with shrimp, broccoli, and chicken.

I LOVE fruit! Apples, pears, kiwi, bananas, grapes, cherries, BLUEBERRIES (a fave), oranges, grapefruit, melon, raisins, dried cranberries, peaches, nectarines. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. Nothing like a sweet peach in the summertime or a tart, crisp apple, fresh from the Greenmarket, on a cool fall day. Ummm, heaven. I don't cook much with fruit, prefering to eat it raw, though I do enjoy fruit-based desserts such as peach cobbler or apple pie or blueberry pie. A big bowl of mixed, chopped, fresh fruit with plain yogurt makes a great lunch for me.

I agree, Donald does a WONDERFUL job each week with his radio show. He deserves a Pat, a George, A Ronald, a David or a whatever on the back for all the work involved. I'm so glad my computers are able to pull in the show. The Radio Show is how I found this here site in the first place. I listened to all the old archived shows at the "other" site and then googled and found HHW and was able to pick up again, filling my insatiable need for internet radio while working. Thanks a million Donald for all your work and dedication to this site and your radio show!

I like to serve (and eat) a huge fruit salad - with whatever's in season (local berries, peaches, apricots; plus the occasional tropical fruit). As for concoctions, I like to use fruit (mango, papaya, pineapple) in a salsa, which I serve with fish.

Good Morning!

I'm more or less an equal opportunity when it comes to fruit.  (Am I gonna regret typing that statement?  Eh... I'll leave it.)

When Granny Smith apples are in season - at least the domestic ones - I will buy them by the bag and have at least one or two a day.

Berries are good too - strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, etc.  However, with all the mass-farmed stuff out there, it's very hard to find some decent stuff in the supermarket, but farmer's markets and roadside stands are a good source.  *And I'm a big fan of the frozen "wild" Maine blueberries.

When I was growing up, my parents would always have melons during the summer.  They would cut them up into slices, make melon balls, and make a sort of "agua fresca" with the melon juice - that was my favorite way!  They would grate the melon on the large side of a box grater into a pitcher with some ice cubes in it.  So cold, so fresh, so refreshing.  Cantaloupe was my favorite.

In the past few years, I've started trying some more "adult" preparations.  Strawberries with freshly ground black pepper and/or balsamic vinegar.  Melon with freshly ground black pepper and prosciutto.  Watermelon with a dash of salt.

...And there's still something comforting about taking a strawberry or other piece of fruit and using it to scoop out a big dollop of Cool Whip right from the tub... :)

DR SWW - I've tried that applesauce recipe from Ming Tsai - very good.  Pairs well with roast pork, pork chops, ham, etc.  As for a starch, how about some horseradish or wasbai mashed taters?

OK... I need to get ready for the first 10 out of 12.  -And I just realized that since we finish at Midnight tonight, and then I have orchestra rehearsal tomorrow morning at 9:00... Hmmm...  I guess I should go ahead and take advantage of the wake-up call service here.

Laters...

Fruit - Ice Cold Watermelon is my favorite.  Then there is the banana with peanut butter on it.  I love apples if they are firm, oranges if they are seedless, and most tropical fruit.  The best way to eat an apple is in fritter form... nice and crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside.

Elmore - Did you know you are mentioned in a footnote in Ethan Mordeen's new book THE HAPPIEST CORPSE I'VE EVER SEEN?  Strange book... half I agree with totally and half I think is a lot of bullcrap.  Also, he doesn't make it easy to read with all the unusual long words he uses.

***

I saw an ad for a revival of the 1966 flop A JOYFUL NOISE (recently issued on CD) starring Clay Akins.  I assume he is playing the John Raitt role since one of the problems with the original was that Raitt was too old.  But there were no other credits.  Is the Michael Bennett choreography being re-created or is there new choreography for this production?  And who else is in it, particularly who is playing the Karen Morrow role?  I know there are some Aiken fans on this here site, so maybe you know.

I love fruit a lot, but I haven't been buying much lately.  When I look at it in the supermarket, I think it's over-priced and that I could do better over in Jersey at one of the roadside vendors.  Of, course, most of those are now closed for the season and those that are open are only selling apples and pumpkins anyway.

But on occaision I do make it over to the Reading Terminal here in Philly, where the fruit is cheap and exotic (sort of like--ah, never mind...)  I love a good crunchy, snappy red deliscious apple, though I've come to like romes and galas, too.  Peaches, plums  and necturines are great, too, but their season is pretty much done here.  I've tried the new (new to me, anyway) b;ack and red seedless grapes, but I find them a little too sweet and prefer the basic green ones (love them frozen.)  Pineapples and Chinese apples are worth the effort it takes to eat them, too.

And I hate grapefruit.

I love to eat bananas with ice cream and with my Cheerios in the morning.

Given my feelings about fruit it does seem odd that I wrote a paean to fruit in my musical, Feast (a musical about food), entitled I Love Fruit.  It was sung by Miss Diana Canova in what was a really incarnation of the character she would play in Nudie Musical.

I also like grapes when they're stored in the fridge and get all cold (ice wine? lol), clementine oranges from Morocco, pomegranates and peaches.

Someone should write a song called "Pomegranates and Peaches" - their names sound right together...

I am getting ready now to sit down and enjoy the first THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT. I have never been much of a fan of Part II - too much Kelly and Astaire at the expense of other talented performers. I think Part III is superb and because they had already used up most of the best clips for the first two parts, the producer/directors dug up interesting clips to mix things up a bit. I think it succeeds brilliantly for someone really interested in musical films. A casual fan might find it dull.

With all this talk about fruit I decided to eat a banana, but they were too soft.  I only eat them just as they turn from green to yellow.

I like just about any fruit that isn’t tart.  Recently I decided I don’t really care for figs unless they have been dried.

I love red apples and use to eat one every day until they began giving me a stomach ache.  Now I rarely have one or Keith saves the core of his apples for me.  In the summer we had watermelon almost every day.  Little sweet tomatoes are grown locally in the summer and taste like candy.  I eat as many of those as I can find.

We have a pear tree and I usually make juice with the pears, adding Fugi apples.  I didn’t take the time this year and am sitting here wishing I had.

I don't think there is any fruit that I don't like! I am particularly fond of fruit pies! I also went back to the new home environment today. Walked around the neighborhood and went into the house. I love it more each time I see it! And I found out that at Christmas time one of the wealthier denizens of the hood pays for a neighborhood parade which goes up and down the streets. One man I talked to (he was having a yard sale) said that last year he opened his home and had his model trains running for kids to come in and look at. Sounds like Capra should be living there!

I think I can answer that, based on what I remember of the Tower location in Glendale before I moved east.

Tower Records in Glendale was part of an experiment, teaming it with The Good Guys Electronics.  They had at least two locations, in Glendale and Long Beach, where they were housed under one roof with the name WOW!

The problem was that Good Guys was having severe problems not too long before we moved.  In both locations, the selection of electronic goods was gutted, nearly empty.

I don't know if Good Guys has folded yet or not, but the situation was sticking Tower with some prime real estate and only half the store filled with their goods (again, both locations).  Hopefully, Tower has been able to absorb the Good Guys half of the Glendale operation, in order to swing things around.  The Long Beach location, on the other hand, was so huge that I can't see it as being viable any longer.

In any case, the West Hollywood Tower was always more idea of what Tower Records should be, a veritable warehouse of music and more.  As I recall, they've got more than the one store there now, having spread across the street for some of the departments.

In close-but-not-close-enough timing, my copy of David Rosengarten's It's All American Food arrived in the mail today.  If it had arrived a few days earlier, we could have included his comments in the discussion Charles Pogue and I were having about Cincinnati Five-Way Chili:

The dish was invented in 1922 by a northern Greek immigrant who wanted to bring all kinds of Old Country spices into chili.  Then he decided to layer his creations - with the approval of the customer, of course - with a series of cumulative options.  One-way chili is the spiced chili alone; two-way chili is the chili on top of spaghetti; in three-way chili, cheese is added; four-way chili introduces chopped raw onions; and the famous five-way chili puts beans on top of it all.

So what are the spices?  Rosengarten lists the mix as: 1 T chili powder, 2 t ground cumin, 2 t ground cinnamon, 1 t ground coriander, 1 t sweet paprika, 1/4 t cayenne, 1/4 t ground cloves, 1/4 t freshly grated nutmeg, and 1/4 t mustard seeds.

Set the spice mix aside.

In a large Dutch oven, over med-high heat, brown 2 pounds ground beef in 1 T canola oil, breaking the beef into small pieces with a spoon.  Add 1 finely chopped onion, 1 finely chopped garlic clove, and the spice mixture, cook for another minute.  Add 2 1/2 c tomato sauce, 1 1/2 c water, 1/2 c sweet, nonsmoky barbecue sauce  (:o), 2 T ketchup, 1 T brown sugar, 1 T red wine vinegar, 1 oz. unsweetened chocolate, and 2 bay leaves, and bring to a simmer, occasionally stirring.  Simmer uncovered for an hour, until it looks like a thick sauce.  Remove the bay leaves before serving.

Elsewhere in the book, Rosengarten also talks about New Mexican Chili Verde, Texas Chili, and Superbowl Chili.  But we can get to those later, some time.

Enjoyed THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT today, but boy can you tell which movies have been remastered and which haven't. SOme of those black and white numbers were so grainy as to be almost unwatchable. Then, "Over the Rainbow" comes on and that sepia is so smooth and sharp that it makes you want to cry.

I found it VERY odd that they used the remastered SINGIN' IN THE RAIN clips for everything but Donald O'Connor's "Make "Em Laugh" solo which seemed to be from an older print. MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS showed up so beautifully, too.

Another carp. Warners used those rechanneled stereo tracks with the SHOW BOAT excerpts but not on their official SHOW BOAT DVD release. Huh? I knew they had them. My SHOW BOAT laserdisc is in surround stereo but the DVD is mono. Maybe we'll get a special edition SHOW BOAT one day with the alternate Ava Gardner tracks so you can choose between her vocals or her dubber Annette Warren's (like you can on the laserdisc), and maybe they'll throw in the other two versions as bonuses along with given a choice on the sound between mono and stereo.

I noticed on both TE I and III, many of the older films (like THE PIRATE) had rechanneled soundtracks where available.

More seriously, der Brucer has been known to make a danged good Cherries Jubilee.  But, since he's not sharing his recipe, we'll have to make due with the following:

In a small saucepan over very low heat, cook 3/4 c dried cherries in 1/4 c kirsch and 1 c orange juice until the cherries have begun to soften and absorb the liquid.  Remove from the heat and let stand at room temperature overnight.  In a separate bowl, soak 2 cans of pitted dark sweet cherries (drained) in 1/2 c orange flavored liqueur, again at room temperature overnight.

When ready to serve (ideally using a chafing dish or some other device so you can perform in front of your starving audience), melt 1 c currant jelly in a large saute pan over medium heat, about 3 minutes.  Add both reserved cherry mixtures, with their liquids, and 1 T grated orange zest, reduce heat low, and simmer for 5 minutes.  In a small pan, warm 1/2 c kirsch over low heat.  Pour the kirsch over the cherries and ignight with a long match.  When the flames have burned down (in the pan, not the house), spoon the cherries and sauce over vanilla ice cream in bowls and serve.

Serves eight.  This is a party dish, after all.   :D

[move=right,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Apple Fritters[/move]

Peel, core, and slice into 1/2 rings 4 Granny Smith (or other firm and tart) apples; toss in a bowl with 1/2 c firmly packed brown sugar.  Spread on paper towels to dry slightly.

In a large bowl, sift 1 c flour.  Make a well in the middle, and add 1 egg yolk and 1 T vegatable oil; gently mix, slowly adding in 3/4 c milk, until the batter is smooth.  In a separate bowl, whisk 1 egg white until it forms firm peaks (you can use the same egg you got the yolk from); fold the egg white into the batter.

Heat more vegetable oil to fill a pan to 1 1/2 inches or so, to 375 degrees.  One at a time, dip the apple rings into the batter, letting the excess drip back into the bowl, then slip the rings into the oil.  Do not overcrowd.  Let the rings fry for about 4 minutes on the first side, flip them over with a slotted spoon, and let fry for another 2 minutes on the second side, to a nice, golden brown.  Transfer the rings to drain on paper towels with the slotted spoon.  Repeat with the remaining rings and batter.

Dust the warm fritters with confectioner's sugar and serve warm with maple syrup.

I am sort of E&T (although, frankly - and georgely - I don't think it should be necessary to explain why we are E&T - this isn't school - it's something we do because we enjoy it, not because it mandatory. Why don't we just assume that if someone isn't posting he or she has a good reason. Even if that reason is that they are not in a posting mood.) - That being said (I'm sure I'll get a tongue-lashing, but I'm a big girl, I can take it) - as I was saying, that being said, I am sort of E&T because I'm having a weird weird day, having to clear out of my home environment every half hour or so while it's being shown. I've put on music (Jobim) and made the place as inviting as possible so that it will be rented TODAY and I can go on with my life. I haven't even showered yet. I don't want to be in the shower as a would-be tenant is walking through...

I have fruit phases. I'll be heavily into some fruit for a time, then get tired of it... Right now I'm into peaches in a big way. For years my lunch was apples and cheese. I loved apples and cheese. Now I don't. Mangoes were my faves for a while; then pears... bananas... canteloupe with cottage cheese. I'm putting myself to sleep. This list is quite boring. I should slip in some naught words. There was an ad like that in Variety the other day. Tracey Ullman congratulating somebody for something - except words like "bullocks" would suddenly pop up. I'll see if I've still got it somewhere.

Crazy day.

I feel certain I tried to post something earlier today, but it's not here.

And I cannot, for the life of me, recall what it might have been.

It had nothing to do with fruits, despite everything.

I watched the fourth DVD of the "That's Entertainment" boxed set late last night.  "The Lion Roars Again" was very special for me, since I had a first-hand report, with photos, from a friend who was there as part of the international press corps at the "TE2" festivities.  He's even "in" the featurette.

Have watched "TE3" today and am taking a mid-movie break from "TE2".  These films are emotionally taxing...for the sheer joy of them and for the reality of what we have lost and will never have again.  And was any talent at MGM ever misused so tragically as Lena Horne?????

About ten years before SIDE SHOW, another musical about the Hilton Sisters (no not Paris and Nickie), TWENTY FINGERS, TWENTY TOES played a brief off-off-Broadway engagement and was never heard from again.  The York’s Mufti series uncovered this show and is presenting it this weekend.  It is hard to compare it to SIDE SHOW because it takes place earlier in the girls’ lives and is more musical comedy than serious musical play.  The two would work together in rep since both shows have their own merits.

While I enjoyed FINGERS very much, it does have its faults.  The first and second acts each have a totally different focal point.  The first act is dominated by the twins’ aunt who makes Mama Rose look nice in comparison.  She and her slick boyfriend totally exploit the twins, taking all the money they make for themselves.  The second act is dominated by a half-man/half-woman vaudeville performer who takes them under his/her wing and allows them to escape from the aunt.  The score is good, but laid out poorly.  The sisters have several songs in a row in Act 1 with little dialogue in between, and Bert/Bertha has several songs in Act 2 also practically unbroken by dialogue.

Still the York did its usual good job with this Mufti, and since there was only a cast of six, they were even able to add drums and bass to the usual piano only.  And, per usual, mikes were not used so the sound of human voices was heard throughout.  Next week: GREENWILLOW.

Since you're sure you'll get a tongue-lashing, here it is:

"I don't think it should be necessary to explain why we are E&T - this isn't school - it's something we do because we enjoy it, not because it mandatory. Why don't we just assume that if someone isn't posting he or she has a good reason. Even if that reason is that they are not in a posting mood.)"

a) who asked you to explain anything?
b) who said it was school?
c) if, by now, you don't know to take my (or anyone's) errant and truant posts in the spirit in which they are intended - COMEDICALLY - then perhaps you should oil your humor gears which clearly have rusted beyond repair (especially in regards to today's post, which was so blatantly blatant in terms of its intent).
d) I find your "it's something we do because we enjoy it, not because it's mandatory" condescending.  This isn't school.
e) if you're not in a posting mood then don't post.  Seems simple to me.

Asked for tongue lashing is now finished.

Now, where in tarnation IS everyone?

This morning I went to a very odd funeral for the neighbor on the corner. He was obviously not a religious man, as the music was a song by Elvis, a song called "My Dog Thinks I'm Elvis" and the closing song was "Happy Trails To You."

After that, I did some fascinating church paperwork. Then I went to the local park to get some photo slides for the prelude at church tomorrow. While there, I saw a bighorn mountain sheep, a jackrabbit, and a roadrunner.

Didn't I have an exciting day?

Panni has just informed me that I "misunderstood" her post and that she wasn't lecturing or condescending, just stating an opinion.  That's fine.  The point of my tongue-in-cheek tongue-in-cheek-lashing was that there are ways to state opinions that don't have to sound like a lecture and furthermore since no one was REALLY castigating anyone for posting or not posting I simply didn't understand the reason for saying things like "this isn't school" and "it shouldn't be mandatory".  Had I said those things then, of course, any opinions would have been both warranted and welcome.

We're just havin' fun around here, and that post seemed to imply that I was seriously upset that people were errant and truant and, of course, nothing could have been further from the truth.  I was KIDDING, like always.

I'm not upset with Panni, although she seemed upset by my tongue-lashing which was simply in response to her thinking she would get one.  Someday I'll do a REAL tongue-lashing so that people can know how bad I can really be.

Let me be very clear about the post in question: The sentiments contained in it (we shouldn't have to post if we don't feel like it, blah, blah, blah) were all fine.  My problem, and this just might be me, is that I didn't understand the reason for it - no one was really castigating anyone, no one was annoyed, so it seemed peculiar to me to make such a post.

So, I understand, Jane, why you would agree with the sentiments expressed (who wouldn't agree) but I hope I've at least made clear what MY problem with it was - and I hope everyone knows that even in my tongue-lashing, it was tongue-in-cheek lashing.  I've made Panni aware of this and hopefully all will be well.

Howdy all.

Well, the week that lasted a month (that’s the way it felt) is finely OVER!  Thank goodness! I was so tired last night that I went to bed shortly after crawling in the door.  I hope next week is much, much better.

Not that today was an easy one.  I took the memory foam pad I bought for my Mom back to the store since she refused to even try it.  Why?  Don’t ask me.  I couldn’t get her to go out with me today to try to get the flu shot either.   I won’t be able to get one but at her age and with her health history, I know she should have it.

Anyway, the van overheated but I was near Target store so I just pulled in under a tree and let it cool down.  I bought water to put in it when a guy came up to me and asked if I needed help.  I told him, no, I had a pretty good handle on it.  I know better to try to open the radiator cap while it is hot and I also know to run the engine when it cools down enough to put the water in so you don’t crack the engine block by putting cold water in.  You also don’t pour the whole gallon in at one time for the same reason.  A little water at a time does the trick.

He said he had some shopping to do but would check back when he came out but I was long gone by then.  It was nice of him to offer to help.  I remember another time when I had a flat tire and had to change it by myself.  I didn’t have AAA at the time.  I think it was shortly after that I joined.

It’s like, I understand the principals of changing a tire but having the strength to crack the lug nuts is something else.  I’ve even tried the old jumping on the tire iron trick but that doesn’t always work.  Especially when they use one of those air guns to put them on.

According to the Weather Bug in the lower corner of my computer it is 63 degrees here in sunny Florida!  Do any of you have a Weather Bug in the lower corner of your computer?  It’s a nice little free program to have.

We had a zero moon phase the other night, according to the Weather Bug.  It made me think.  If werewolf’s come out on the night of a full moon, what would someone turn into on the night of no moon?  What would be the opposite of a werewolf?   Something totally hairless?  Like one of those hairless dogs?  An interesting thought, don’t you agree?

Now I miss my pair of red slipper/socks I lost in NYC.  I shall have to check at the local Walmart for another pair.  I’m just not into wearing shoes.

Panni, I saw the pictures of your soon to be new home.  I have to say that the windows look like the windows in our house.  Do they open out?  Most of ours do.

I’m glad to read that Boggie may have found the right vet.  Good vibes to both Boggie (sp?) and Echo.

TOTD:  Fruit.  I love it!  There is very little fruit that I don’t like.  Green melons and shredded coconut are about the only things I can think of that I can’t eat.  The green melon makes my throat scratchy and I always choke on shredded coconut no matter how much I chew it before I swallow.

I would LOVE to taste the pomegranate jelly, SWW!  I would also LOVE to have a pomegranate tree/bush/what ever in my yard.  I never can wait for fall so the stores will start to sell them.  Of course, because of the seeds (and no, I’m not going to spit every seed out) I really shouldn’t eat them anymore but I consider them worth the pain.

In fact, I bought one today!

My parents always called them “Indian Apples”.  I don’t know why.  A Pittsburgh/Northern thing?   When I was younger, I could never understand why no one understood what I was talking about when I would ask for an Indian Apple.  And to think they are the “cause” of summer and winter.  A Greek myth reference.

One bit of good news from last week—I won the T-shirt design contest again.  It was the design I thought they would go for, considering we are a government agency and the walk is in the same month as the Presidential elections.

I guess I’ll have to start thinking about what to do for next year.

Opps, caught up again on the posts.  I’m sure it was all a misunderstanding, Panni, the problem with boards is it is impossible to hear the emotion in the other persons voice or see the expression on their face to know for 100% sure if they are joking or not.  These guys can only help so much.  :) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :'(

I didn't throw us into wide screen mode, did I?  It looks tall on my computer but it does fit.   I don't understand.  I saved it as 480 X 360 like I do all of my photos.

Danise, I miss you so much when you take time off from posting. I'm glad all is well.

Re "What If?"  Thanks, BK. I'll take you up on your offer if I don't get to see it live.

Re fruit: This is what I learned from having a kid in a botony class last year: The fruit is the ovary of the plant, so it is the part that contains the seeds. Hence, green beans, okra, tomatoes, are all technically fruit. A vegetable is the stem, flower, leaf, or root of the plant. If I'm wrong, DR Sandra can correct me.

This makes zucchini bread the kissing cousin to fruitcake.

Danise the only one of my mother-in-law's elderly friends who got a flu shot waited four hours to do so.  The chances your mother could have gotten one are slim.  Keith's mother is high risk and can't get one.

Thanks for the good vibes.

I'm thinkin' about food now that it is the shank of the evening.  Wait - it was just the shank of the afternoon.  What is a shank anyway?  I know what a skank is but not a shank.  For example, the skank of the evening might be a person out on the town who was quite dirty and nasty-smelling.  But can one have a shank of both the afternoon and the evening?

I've never heard of a shank but I understand the word "food" well enough--what did you have in mind?

Jane, I know.  The lines for the flu shots are just horrible. I did hear they should have more shots available next month.  That gives me time to "work" on her.

Getting back to fruit, there was another discussion a while back between der Brucer and DR Jose about apple butter, particularly when paired with scrapple.

So, without any further delay, here's APPLE BUTTER!

Start by sterilizing four half-pint canning jars, along with their lids and bands.  Yes, this is important.  Keep them in hot (but not boiling) water after sterilizing so that they'll be ready to use.

Peel, core, and coarsely chop seven pounds tart apples, such as Granny Smith or Macoun.  Yes, you read that right, seven pounds.  You can mix and match apple varieties, if you like.  Combine the apples and 1 cup apple cider vinegar in a large, nonreactive pot, cover, and cook for about 30 minutes, until the apples fall apart.  Run the apples through a food mill (coarse disc) or push through a strainer, and return the mush to the pot.

Add to the apples the following: 2 packed cups dark brown sugar, 2 T lemon juice, 1 1/2 t grated lemon zest, 4 t ground cinnamon, 1 1/4 t ground clove, 1 1/4 t ground ginger, 1/2 t ground allspice, and 1/2 t salt.  Cook at a very low simmer for about 90 minutes, watching carefully to make sure the butter doesn't scorch.  When the butter is very thick, test it by putting a spoonful on a plate: if it doesn't leak a liquid ring, it's ready.

Ladle the apple butter into each jar, tapping the jars on the counter to get rid of any air bubbles, and leaving a half inch headspace in each jar.  Wipe the jar rims with a clean damp towel, seal with the lids and bands, and return the jars to the hot water, putting the jars in the water upside down.  Return the water to a boil, and cook for ten minutes.  Remove the pot from the heat, and let the jars cool slightly before removing them from the pot.  As they cool, the vacuum will be created, sealing the jars.  Let the jars cool completely, still upside down, on kitchen towels.

Store the sealed jars in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks or more before serving.  If any jars did not seal for any reason, use those jars first.  Refridgerate the jars after opening.

Shank, according to my dictionary, means the tail end of a time period.  It can also mean the early part of a time period.  Or the middle of the time period.

Oh, what the heck, it's five o'shank somewhere.  Cheers!

It's the wrong season for them, but how about some

[move=right,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Strawberries Romanoff!!![/move]

Wash, stem, and quarter a pint of strawberries, reserving four small strawberries for garnish later.  Mix the quartered strawberries with 1/4 c sugar, 2 T freshly squeezed orange juice, 2 T triple sec,and a teaspoon freshly grated orange zest.  Cover, and let sit in the refrigerator for a few hours.

(Amazing how many of these recipes call for grated zest, isn't it!)

When ready to serve, whip 1/2 c whipping cream to soft peaks, and gently fold into 1/2 pint softened vanilla ice cream, then gently fold the strawberries into the ice cream mixture.  Serve in martini glasses, or wine glasses, or jelly glasses if that's all you have.  Garnish with the reserved strawberries.

Thanks for all the nice posts. There's enough drama in the world without my contributing to it, so let's call the whole thing off. But just to be clear -- I wasn't chastising anyone or anything. I wasn't lecturing. I was merely commenting, giving my opinion. And I was responding not to one post, but generally to the whole E&T thing. The post was simply the catalyst. However - it's no big deal. As I said to a DR who kindly wrote me about all this and quoted some of the posts which followed my "departure" -- Iraq is a big deal, being homeless is a big deal, illness is a big deal. A misunderstanding on a website, even the best website on the internet, is NOT a big deal. End of story. Let's move on.

I saw it earlier, but just went back and took in the rest of it.

Hell's bells.

Watched SEVEN BRDIES tonight - the Cinemascope version. Looked simply wonderful, as good as the slightly ruddy Ansco color system could ever look. Sound was fine, too. Didn't look at any extras. I did go back and listen to Stanley Donen's commentary, what little there was of it.

Finished the "That's Entertainment" set.  The first film, for me, is the best.  The third one is great, too, but I don't much like "TE2".

I wasn't at all thrilled with the sound situation on the DVDs....everything would be moving along, and suddenly the sound goes from mono to processed (shades of electronically created stereo) sound.   I was watching in the 5.1 mode and had to switch over and simply watch in a basic mono/stereo mix.  One of the numbers from "Good News" sounded great, and then processed sound took over and we were in a vast arena with arena sound blasting away.

Is it the shank of the evening yet?  I had Buffalo Wings from Koo Koo Roo.  Quite good.  I've moved on to the extras disc on TE, but am not enjoying it too much.  I think I'll go right to the cut numbers side, because I don't like the puff pieces.  The amusing one is for TEIII, with all these new "video" guys hogging the screen and being all self-congratulatory.  I don't like the second OR third film much.

RLP: Yes, we know who Manderley is.

Let's keep the errant and truant thing in perspective, shall we?  When I (or anyone) speaks of it, just assume we're having fun.  I understand now that I'm being told that Panni's post was humorous, but so was the post she was responding to, and I just saw no reason for being what seemed to me all serious about it.  Errant and truant = funny.  It someone doesn't find it funny, move along and ignore it.  Certainly I'm not going to drop one of our longest running gags - EVER.  I am all about the running gags.  ALWAYS.

I'm hoping my place is rented. My landlady feels uneasy about renting to a male tenant. But I think the best prospect so far was a nice looking gay man in his thirties who came with a lady friend to help him look. They both loved the place and he wants it. He has a nine-year-old Lab and works in music clearance at Paramount. And he brought a a stack of references, even his credit report. All first class. He even asked if he could paint the bedroom and have a decorator friend do the place. Sounds like the perfect tenant to me. Now if the landlady agrees, I can once again shower in peace.

Sticking with the fruit theme of the day, I must say that when comparing the posts of Dear Reader Laura and Dear Reader Sandra, one must conclude that the apple, indeed, does not fall far from the tree.
