TOD

I got nuthin'...  I have never seen the black stallion, nor  national velvet, nor the incredible journey nor the red pony, nor old yeller....  All movies I hear are classics and feature  animal performers.  I have no idea why I have not seen these, but I have not .

I know it is not ask BK day but I am asking anyway. Bruce, know you worked on Penn & Teller's BS, but have you ever seen their stage show?   We  were talking about going to their final show on Broadway which coincidently falls on my birthday but the tickets are quite expensive cheap seats are upwards  of $100 +....   So my question is : is it worth it?

Quiet here this morning.

Back for a minute to say that someone has found me a copy of the program for that great Paul Williams evening I attended back in 2001.  As soon as I have it I'll scan and post it.  And then of course mine will turn up.  I'm just sorry this wasn't in hand back when it could have been of use to BK.

THE BLACK STALLION is a good movie, but it was never one of my favorites.

Jan Rooney, Mickey's wife, hired me to do an Oscar campaign for him on that picture.  We got the Supporting Actor nomination, but then Mickey came home from doing SUGAR BABIES in New York and decided to take over.

 :(

Melvyn Douglas won.

Our read thru was good....there is an obvious WEAK LINK in the cast....an OBVIOUS one.....not sure why this girl was cast with the rest of us....there were a couple of other choices....

The director noticed it, I'm sure....he has a LOT of work ahead of him.  Of course it is one of the actresses that I have A LOT of dialog with.

This is really cool - a "Google glass" solution for opera?

Opera goers wear special glasses, which project the translation into their field of vision, in real time, in the language they select...

Just a thought, culled from the very things BK said in his column today:

Bruce:  Why not an original musical called "Then and Now"....with rear screen projections of "your" L.A. and songs about key points of interest and your experiences there, juxtaposed with (or segueing into) the "now" pix being projected and a song about how that makes you feel?

It could be a love letter to the old L.A.

Here's a link to a PDF of the Paul Williams tribute program.  It was a wonderful evening.  And good lord, there was a lot of stuff I'd forgotten about.

http://home.comcast.net/~chasmith7/PaulWilliams2001.pdf

"Loser's Lounge" has done some great stuff.  I went to a few of their shows back in the day.  In particular, I remember this one and a Brian Wilson one that was also quite wonderful.  I guess they're still going strong, but I haven't gotten down there for that in years.

It's always funny to me - no cabaret has done a tribute to Paul Williams until we did - some people said why would you do that, to which I replied why would I do anything?  And suddenly there's another one a month later.  These coincidences are amusing.  We'll see how fast we get an Andre Previn show :)

According to wiki, Paul Williams has still been productive in the 2010's.  And he co-won the Album of the Year award at the 2014 Grammys, as a producer on the Daft Punk album.

Ron Pulliam's idea about then and now is interesting and something that had already been rummaging around in my mind - to do a revue about LA past and present, with songs by all my LA songwriting friends, sketches by folks I know and like, and I'd be the glue in terms of structure and having a song and sketch or two in the show.  One of the things the LACC guy had mentioned was a revue - I'm liking the idea but it's unwieldy and I'd have to focus it in a very short period of time.  I may query my friends and see if they'd be interested in doing it.

Well, not one to sit on my ASS, I've already got Bruce Vilanch on board for whatever this LA revue is.  He loved the idea of it and is ready to go.  So, I'll query other folks.  I only want writers and songwriters who've lived here.

My lighting guy from Inside Out, who's moved to London but was trying to come back to light our show, can't.  So, now I have to find someone - I hate that.  You find someone who's easy to work with and who "gets" you and then they move.  I need someone with strong ideas and who's easy to work with and collaborative.  I don't know where I'm supposed to find such a person.

BK - If you do the L.A. revue, would you do all new songs, or existing songs as well?

I ask because Harriet Schock, whom you and I had dinner with when we saw the show at the Mark Taper Forum, has a song that was something of a pop hit for Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Hollywood Town

Well, not one to sit on my ASS, I've already got Bruce Vilanch on board for whatever this LA revue is.  He loved the idea of it and is ready to go.  So, I'll query other folks.  I only want writers and songwriters who've lived here.

That's great, BK!

I just received A Spoonful of Sherman (http://www.simgproductions.com/Records/A_Spoonful_of_Sherman.html)!  I'm going to listen to it right now...actually, I'm going to go to lunch right now, then I'll listen to it when I get back. :)

Is this my friend Simon's recording from England?

Why, yes it is, Larry. :D

FJL, I'd want this to be all new material - easier that way.  There are just so many ripe subjects, past AND present, for songs and sketches.  Can have a number or sketch about sexting, texting, lack of communication, a then and now with a couple at a restaurant, which I think would be hilarious, maybe more hilarious if it was the same couple, all that kind of thing.

Yup.  They are all in the same school district and a different one from his current district.  He would have liked to stay at his school, however, they keep losing classrooms.

Certainly.  I've asked to borrow it this very evening, so hopefully it will be in my hands in a little while -- whereupon I'll have my way with it and should be able to send it off tomorrow.  In a plain brown wrapper.

And on that note (A-Natural), I'm off.  I was just going to go to the movies with a friend of mine (the new version of "Far from the Madding Crowd" at the Olympia Film Society), but there's a production meeting for TAO's "An Improbable Peck of Plays 4" just before that.  I don't think I need to stay for the entire meeting, so I should have enough time to get to the theater, especially since my friend has a free ticket for me. :)

Until later!

They were working on my deck again tonight.  I though they had left and saw them in the dark.  Good grief, they should have said something.  I turned on the outside lights and they worked a lot later.   They had extra dirt from leveling the yard under the deck so they went around the yard and filled in holes all over.  Wow! I've been meaning to do that.  I'll pick up some grass seed tomorrow as it's supposed to rain.  What a nice thing for them to do

I haven't looked but I think they got most of the base built.  They have day jobs so they just work at night.   They don't want to be paid until the whole job is done so if it takes awhile that's fine with me.  They leave their wheel barrow and a few other things in the back, so I know they will be back.

I really needed this extra time off.  I haven't taken a real break in years because I really can't afford to do it.  When I don't work, I don't get paid.  But this time, I decided what the heck.  I've been to two funerals this summer for people in their 60s.  I've been bitten by a bat, taken a series of rabies shots, gotten so sick when I ate that I quit eating most foods, had two organs removed and now am putting up with noise twice a week from the concerts. With all this....I really feel good.  I've decided that I'm not going to wait to do things I need done on the house.   It will take all my savings and I'll likely have to borrow more, but it is what it is.

I loved the original FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD.

I enjoyed this movie.  I didn't know any other version, so I went in completely (metaphorically) blind.  Carey Mulligan was very good, as were the three men (who were also quite the handsomest of men ;) ), and very good actors.
