Title: THE LOO ON THE ROOF
Post by: bk on July 30, 2015, 12:15:56 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of the loo on the roof, and now it is time for you to post until the cows on the roof come home.

The one that I remember (but don't remember the name) was the first gay dating show.  They had a bunch of guys in a house getting to know each other and the gay bachelor had his best friend (a girl) there to give him advice during the run.  However the kicker was that some of the guys that he was going for weren't actually gay!  And they had to pretend that they were gay.  At the end, if he picked a guy who was gay, I think they both got to split the grand prize money (whatever it was).  But if he picked a straight guy, the straight guy got all the money.

 :P , I say.

Many people don't know that in Sondheim's first draft of that song for Follies, the lyrics were:

Many people don't know that in Sondheim's first draft of that song for Follies, the lyrics were:

Listen to the loo on the roof
Go plink plink-a-plank

There were several such references in the draft you mention, like:

I have seen raccoons in Soho
And I like them more than so-so
But when there's a loon
Goodbye, Raccoon

He changed it and the rest, of course, is history.

There's also this in On a Clear Day's Come Back to Me, it's still sometimes sung this way if there's an overdone accent:

Have you gone to the moon
To the corner saloon
Or to Raccoon to ruin

I hate all reality shows, except for one or two that are well-scripted. :-) It seems the creators' favorite thing is to make people cry. And I have no desire to watch people cry. I tried to watch one that was about dogs and dog training and within the first 20 minutes, some girl was crying because the judges chastised her for putting a dress on her dog...so dumb.

I watched half an hour of the show once because I wanted to see my cousin's name in the credits, and have some idea of what the show was about.  I was very surprised the next day to see responses to the show all over the news.

TOD:

I sort of enjoyed Top Chef on occasion and Food Network Star, but having been an extra on two "reality" shows, I think they're more fictional than most scripted sitcoms or dramas.

Is Dancing with the Stars considered a reality show? That's one's OK, but only because of the dancing. I don't care about the backstage "drama."

I have not liked whatever I've seen of other reality shows, and the preponderance of them is a big reason why I stopped watching TV.

And they're encouraged to behave outrageously and create faux conflict where none previously existed.  It's all manufactured bullshit.  We're making stupid people famous.

I wouldn't want raccoons peeing on my roof either, but please don't damn them to Hell.

They're just poor creatures trying to get by, and I understand that they are people friendly and can make nice pets.

Just buy them a litter box.

For all my protesting, it seems I may have overdone it this week.  I slept 8 hours last night but really didn't feel on top of my game today, so I packed up some work and came home.   I ate lunch on the new deck and sat in the chaise for a little while.  It's beautifully shady out there until late in the afternoon, then it's only 1/2 in the sun.   I need to get a deck storage box to keep my cushions and hammock in so I don't have to take them in and out all the time to keep them safe from the weather

My next door neighbor is having a huge rummage sale on Saturday.  They have been going to flea markets for years and have a lot of good stuff.   I'm going to put a few things out - mostly extra furniture that I just don't have a place for.  I'm hoping to sell more than I did last year at the same sale.  I can hear them outside starting to get ready for the sale.  I'll wander over there soon to see what the timing is.

I downloaded Windows 10 on my laptop last night.  If you download it, I suggest doing the "custom" install rather than the "express".  If you do the express you give permission to use your location, send info to Microsoft and other things I'm not really fond of doing.  You can turn them all off if you do custom.   I haven't played with the apps much yet, but so far it's working fine without having any of those things turned on.   It is much better than Windows 8 was.

I have Windows 7 on my other computers.  Windows 10 is closer to Windows 7 than Windows 8.  It has some differences but not that many.  All my files and other programs are still there.  There is a new internet browser, but I just had to click on "import favorites" and all my favorites were there. I think Windows 8 is gone, not sure

I think that "reality" is a misapplied word in most of the shows.

When I watch "Big Brother", I'm fully aware I'm watching a game AND a semi-scripted and quite-often-over-performed show that has become a part of the game.

Is there a website that talks about the unused songs for Valley of the Dolls?  I've searched around a bit, and can't find anything - although I did find a audio version of Judy Garland singing "I'll Plant My Own Tree" with a slightly different arrangement than what is used in the movie when Margaret Whiting sings it.....I guess Eileen Barton sang it on the soundtrack LP (and Dory Previn sang the title tune) because of contract differences......

I've never done that and should have.

My mom always did.  I have fabric cushions, I keep them in the garage and they look just as nice as they did the day I bought them

I have never had that nice of outdoor furniture.

I've had a lovely visit with Charlotte who will fly to Italy with her parents on Sunday for nine(?) days.  when she's back, we'll see a movie.  That cheered me up.

It is so steamy outside.  i open the apartment door and my glasses steam up.

I'm glad she showed up :)

Had a fun lunch meeting with Sami's mom and a friend of hers who happens to be a huge long-time fan of mine - always fun to hear what made people fans - in this case it was seeing Stages at the Matrix Theatre and falling in love with the show - he has hanging in his office the lyrics to the title song of that show.  Very nice fellow.

Then we had our second rehearsal - went very well, although I really wish people would be completely off book by the second rehearsal so that I could actually direct them.  Some were, some weren't - by Saturday they all will be.

I did have a classic BK moment due to our MD not understanding the change that I wanted to make to the ride out of one number.  For me, it was an incredibly simple change - basically the same ride out but adding one bar.  I hummed it over and over and over and over and over and still he could not get it through his head.  It was SO simple I just finally went berserk.  No one knows quite what to do when I'm finally pushed into that land, but I can only hum and talk through something about twenty times before that journey is complete.  And still he did not get it.  In fact, he did every other possible thing you could do BUT what I wanted.  He finally said that he couldn't figure it out because I'd had him originally go back to the vamp of the first song in the put-together - but that vamp and the second song vamp are almost identical.  Once I understood that, I told him to just do what I was humming all along, which was the vamp to the second song with the added bar - and still he could not figure it out.  I finally did what I should have done from the start - just walked over to the piano and showed him.  When I got to the piano I looked at the intro vamp to the second song and there was everything I wanted save for the final beat.  THEN he finally understood.  I apologized to everyone, but boy was it frustrating.

Then I did a two and a half mile jog.   I do have to eat a little something so probably a couple of those low-cal tortilla things will be a nice snack and I'll have eaten well under 1000 calories when you factor in the jog.

Something must be in the air today. I had a similar experience with an idiot of an IT person at work. I spared him the meltdown, but my co-workers felt too much of my pain.
