Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a flood of emotion, and now it is time for you to post until the emotional cows come home.

There was never a special theater for me growing up. The main theater I went to growing up had almost 3000 seats. I've sat all over the place. Orchestras, balcony. Lodges.

I think I know which actor BK is referring to. From his description I had the exact reaction to his performance when I saw it. He killed the comedy of the character.

My closest equivalent to BK's Huntington Hartford experience would be the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami -- where I, too, saw Ann Sothern in The Glass Menagerie.  And Stop the World.  And Luv.  And so much more.  You know, I never looked back on seeing those plays and musicals as a life changing thing...but of course they were.

The very process of getting down there from Fort Lauderdale in my early teen years was part and parcel of the experience, transitioning from being driven by my parents, to taking the bus (Greyhound variety) by myself, to getting my license and eventually being permitted to drive there.

The Playhouse was run by Zev Buffman who I knew nothing about then but his name was always prominent.  He later opened the Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale where I saw just a few things (such as Merman in Call Me Madam) before going off to school in Cleveland.

Oh, the TOD is the theatre building itself rather than the experience?  I guess that would be the Circle in the Square uptown, where BTW our school was always able to arrange conversations for the students with people involved with the show.

The director seems almost intent on directing the laughs out of the show....but we outnumber him....

I will be very scarce the next three days, Friday-Sunday.  I'm going back up to "Capitolfest" in Rome, NY, which I first attended a couple of years ago.  It's a unique way to spend a summer weekend -- for the most part, being inside of a 1928 movie palace that's well care for and partially restored, watching films exclusively of the 1920s and 1930s.  But the theater and the projection (note to BK: carbon arc) are incredible, and you really get into the groove of films of that period, and most of them are new discoveries.  Almost everything is 35mm, on loan from studios, collectors, and the Library of Congress.  It's a real getaway into another world.

Went to a lot of theater that was good and not-so-good as a kid. Shakespeare in the Park was a highlight, so was a host of productions at Actors Theater of Louisville when the playwriting festival was getting underway.

Saw world premiere productions of Agnes of God and Marsha Norman's early works as well as Shaw, more Shakespeare, a wondrous production of J.M. Barrie's What Every Woman Knows, Wodehouse's The Play's the Thing, and so many more. I even remember the flops, like the outer space rock musical version of Titus Andronicus and a 4-hour bio of Gilbert and Sullivan called Tarantara! Tarantara!

Also saw Baryshnikov at the height of his powers as he danced two years in a row with the Louisville Ballet Theater. He and Patricia McBride led the Balanchine Pas de Deuze, images from which I still remember.

This has been a long afternoon.  I got home from Columbia around 1:00, had a long phone conversation with my new Gentlemen, Be Seated! copyist, and then spent about two hours transcribing all my notes I had copied at Columbia.  I am ready for a nap.

Yes, I'm up - I didn't fall asleep until almost five and slept till noon.  I've been scurrying about ever since.  I realize that when I'd write a new What If in the old days of One from Column A I would obviously share it.  While I don't want to do that in the notes, I'm happy to do it here on the message board if anyone would like to see it.

I had a patty melt and five onion rings for my meal o' the day, and picked up some packages, including the new Li'l Abner poster and a new book about musicals from the 1970s - Nudie Musical is lovingly written about, has a nice long section and the author asked me a lot of questions and the answers are all there.  The book, from Bear Manor Media, is chockfull of typos - that seems to be the rage these days - no one proofs anything anymore, and Bear Manor Media positions itself as a "real" publisher and therefore they should know better than not to have proofing done.  Then again, the book is over eight hundred pages long.

For lunch today, I had mac and cheese.  It was called "the Gilroy" (named after the town of Gilroy, garlic capital of America, I believe)....creamy white cheddar, tangy pecorino and roasted garlic with macaroni noodles.   It was YUMMILICIOUS, but it was too much.  Oh, yes.  I stopped short of licking the bowl because I was popping like a well-fed tick.

I had also bought a salad.  It was called "the Freshman".  It's lettuce with black olives, feta cheese and artichoke hearts.  It remains unmolested and will be din-din should I be able to partake of din-din.  As of right now, din-din will be on hold until breakfast.

All of this came from a restaurant called "Home Room", which has become one of the local dining hot spots for folks who love this kind of food.

I watched the 10-episode "Wayward Pines" with an all-star cast on Fox TV.   It was, mostly, done extremely well and kept me returning.

And then, in the last episode, it totally let me down in a major way.  And don't ask me what I thought of the derivatively twisted ending.

I said don't ask!

Okay, for those who asked: What if Stephen Sondheim, instead of writing Pacific Overtures, had written Peter Pan.  And it goes something like this (to the tune of The Advantages to Floating in the Middle of the Sea):

In the middle of the night we fly
As we go to Neverland
Sprinkle fairy-dust and say goodbye
As we go to Neverland
Hook is waiting somewhere
Contemplating somewhere
Lost boys on the run
Battles to be won
And it’s lots of fun
Somewhere out there – not here
Here you tell tales
Yes!  Mother always tells us tales

She tell us tales each night
The tales of Peter Pan
Yes, Peter Pan each night
We’ll catch him if we can
And Captain Hook
He’s really vile
But do not fret
Just use your guile
And Hook will look for the crocodile
So, off to Neverland
Get ready now to fly
And Hook is waiting somewhere
Not here

(Hook enters)

You can say that Captain Hook’s a crank
In his boat upon the sea
Peter Pan will have to walk the plank
In that boat upon the sea
Peter will be done for
He’ll try, but still be done for
Hook will win the day
What more can I say
Now into the fray
Somewhere out there – not here
Here he makes plans
Yes!  Peter Pan is making plans

He plans his little plans
Then executes his plans
I see his little plans
And plan my little plans
It’s all a game of wits
I’m not a man who quits
I’ll squash the plan of Peter Pan
When you fool with a Hook you can just close the book

All:

The plan

We plan the plans and then
The day begins again
And Hook is waiting somewhere
Not here

So, let’s fly to Neverland right now
Ready, Wendy, Michael, John
So just watch me and I’ll show you how
Ready, Wendy, Michael, John
We will soar and we will fly
Kiss our boring life goodbye
Follow Tinkerbell
Let’s be on our way there
Once you agree
You’ll see
There we’ll tell tales
Plan the plans
Meet Tiger Lily
And the boys
And Captain Hook
Plan the plans
And meet the Indians who dance
We fly

Tell the tales
And capture Peter
Walk the plank
Watch out for Hook
Plan the plans
And meet the Indians who dance
To fly

The crocodile and Hook
The planning of the plans
The building of the house
The telling of the tales
We fly

The distant melody
The planning of the plans
The fighting Captain Hook
We fly
The Wendy, Michael, John
The planning of the plans
The crocodile and Hook,
The telling of…
We fly

We fly.

I observe all the cuts on the cast album - so, what's fun is go to You Tube and play the song and sing along with the new lyrics :)

I hadn't realized that the cast album cut that number. In more than the interludes, I mean.

JRand, Jane powell just appeared on the screen. Watching "Deep in My Heart," the Sigmund Romberg story. Jose Ferrer is rather dreadful in this.

Had an excellent lunch today with friends to celebrate National Oyster Day (which actually was yesterday). We feasted on six different oysters from Price Edward Isles and then dove into the rest of the meal.

Well, it's been a day.  My aunt is still in the hospital, will have to stay over tonigh, and might have to stay over tomorrow night.  My mom and sister and I went to lunch together and then visited my aunt for a couple of hours.  She's in very good spirits, so that's good.

I'm glad she is in good spirits.
