Title: A SYSTEM CALLED RECIPROCITY
Post by: bk on August 08, 2015, 12:02:33 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had reciprocity, and now it is time for you to post until the reciprocated cows come home.

While the campaign was a disappointment, we did get to 41% which is better than Inside Out's Indiegogo campaign did.  In the end, we probably would have done better had I been listened to at any point, but the real fact is an awful lot of people who have been befriended by the family and who the family has given both financial and emotional support to, sat on their complacent ASSES and did nothing to reciprocate.  That was the eye-opener for her and believe me she is not happy about it and those people will never again get the benefit of any positivity from her family.  One especially wealthy person actually said to her husband, we'd contribute if you were sick or in financial trouble but don't feel comfortable contributing to this.  Really?  REALLY?  It's for their DAUGHTER and her career.  A pox on you, sir, a major league big ugly pox on you, you entitled little twerp.  But it's great when they'll give money for your little children's Bar Mitzvah - that's perfectly fine, you entitled little jerk.

BK, You've seen, of course, that so many people considered offering assistance with what you do for musical theater - and what Kritzerland as a label does for the theater world in general - as a valuable and worthy cause, both now and over the years.

But I'm getting confused about the Bar-Mitzvah and Bat-Mitzvah custom you seem to be talking about, which I assume you're hearing from the family.  For example, my cousin just had her Bat-Mitzvah not all that long ago, and except for a few close relatives, just about no one who didn't come (as far as I know) contributed to the Bat-mitzvah, but the ones who came gave gifts for having come to the big party - gifts which when added up didn't begin to cover the cost of the event.  Here in NY, and with my cousin in PA, it works very much like a wedding; it can cost, say, $30,000 or $40,000, you get some amount in gifts.  Are things done differently in California - do people actually contribute to help someone have a Bar-Mitzvah or Bat-Mitzvah celebration?

Last night's "An Improbable Peck of Plays, Vol. IV" went very well!  We had a large (for the space) audience, but it wasn't full.  They were responsive, so that's good.  We're off to a good start!

After the show last night, I went to my friend's house and they were just finishing up showing a movie on the side of their large shed.  What little I saw wss really cool!  It looked great!  I missed all of the festivities, but there was some birthday cake left over.  It was quite delish!

All I know is what I was told - that for each of these Bar and Bat Mitzvah's they gave a couple of hundred bucks - whether that was a gift or a contribution I know not.  And since Sami and Sarah chose NOT to have Bat Mitzvahs the least these scum suckers could have done was also contribute SOMETHING to something that is Sami's dream.

I understand the Kritzerland love and why, thankfully, we had a pretty successful Indiegogo campaign.  Again, I was off on the sidelines for the most part in this campaign - but it irritated me no end to hear these endless stories of fair-weather friends either saying no, not making a contribution ( like buying some damn tickets in advance, or the CD - no one was asking for free money), or promising they'd do it and then not doing it.  They suck, these people, sorry.

I don't even think it will be karma.  I think they will need the support and or assistance of the family and they will not get it.  They'll be all hurt and not understanding and she will more than happily explain it to them.  This was very hard for her to do - she really doesn't like asking anyone for anything, but she did it, did it nicely, did it positively, promises were made by certain people who didn't end up keeping the promise, and others just ignored or dismissed her.  None of that would be a problem if she was not the person she is and hadn't been so very supportive of them.  Support is a two-way street.  It's like The Godfather - "I'll do this thing for you, but the time may come when I need you to do a thing for me."

As to my offer of speaking, I am holding off making a decision until I've spoken to the people in charge; I know it's tied in with a production of Sondheim On Sondheim, so I want to know what topics they and i think are something I know anything about pertaining to Mr Sondheim beyond the Pulitzer Prize. Perhaps I could talk about diminishing Broadway pit orchestras..

As to the logistics of my accepting, I probably need to purchase a new suit, I have no money to my name for traveling for a week - car rental, living expenses; maybe i need an Indiegogo campaign?

Speaking of diminishing pit bands, I've been listening a lot to the 1985 London cast of Gigi, and I love it; I would rather see this than that dreadful "politically correct" abortion that just closed on Broadway. Hardly anyone in the cast can carry a tune, but the cast is so right - Jean Pierre Aumont, Sian Philips, Beryl Reid - and the chamber orchestration is really beautiful.

I think i must be misunderstanding something about what the parents are thinking of.

I am guessing that most guests at Bar Mitzvahs give cash.  So if Sami's mom gave cash to every one Sami went to that would be a lot of money she's given to these various people.

If Wall Street Journal links are working for folks here:  This article about a new book on redheads says our impression of redheads is greatly influenced (ironically) by Lucille Ball.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/ginger-snaps-1438970122

From the article:

" It is in the nature of our ambivalence toward red hair, Ms. Colliss Harvey argues, that much as we fear or distrust what it represents, we desire its empowering qualities and its ability to make us stand out. Red hair dye, the author points out, sells better than any other shade. She believes that we have Lucille Ball, who happily admitted to dyeing her hair to play her popular TV character, to thank. Independent and resourceful, Ball created an enduring archetype of redheaded feistiness originally seen in Lilith and later reflected in characters like the cowgirl Jessie in “Toy Story 2.” "

A biography of Whitney Houston seems to confirm this.

Well, I just got the call from my mom and my aunt is out of the hospital!  I'll go over there around three.  That'll give her some time to get something to eat and rest a bit before we descend upon her.  Then, I'm off to the theater.

DR Michael, I'm sorry to hear about your new diagnosis. I went wheat-free many years ago, only to learn that ALL gluten bothers me. I now keep gluten to a minimum. It's inconvenient, but doable. There are now many, many gluten-free options, and most are quite good, IMO.

I have been looking for cleaning help. No luck so far. The first person spoke so little English that I couldn't make heads or tails of what she was saying. The second person knew of no one who does this sort of work. I asked a facialist I know if she knew of anyone. She asked three people about a week ago, but no one has gotten back to her. The cleaning service I heard of on Amazon Local Deals that sounded so good is now out of business.

I was telling Richard, my hairdresser, all this the other day. He's looking for someone to help clean his salon. I've started doing some of the nonstandard cleaning that most services won't do. I'll keep trying to find someone, but I'm not very optimistic. I have trouble understanding the poor work ethic and had have trouble over the years finding anyone I'm happy with.
