TCB, sorry to hear about the scooter difficulties. Driving cross country in the scooter would have been a long trip and I don't think there are many charging stations between Washington State and New York City

Seriously, if i ever win the lottery, you will have one.

Ah yes, Friday.  The TOD.  Well, I am listening to a lot of vinyl these past few days.  Various and sundry things as I continue to pare down the collection a wee bit.  Hey, there's that wee bit again.

So CDs, not so much lately.  And movies?  Let's see.  I started watching CRUMB the other night but fell asleep so have to begin again.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S SEX COMEDY is probably up next, because, guess what?  I never saw it.  It was the first Woody Allen film I wasn't moved to go to when first released, and I never bothered to catch up on it in all of these years.

Other than that, I don't know.  I just don't know.  I am a bastion of ignorance on this matter.

I wish our building's laundry room had a schedule.  I took my laundry to the basement to find the building's resident space cadet just putting her laundry into the washers, so i've got at least an hour's wait, and iu have no idea whether or not someone else will beat me to them.

Friday morning greetings!  Late this afternoon I'm having my left leg scanned for vein valve problems.

I've just baked a graham cracker crust into which I'll put 2 pints of fresh blueberries and drizzle those with a small jar of red currant jelly (heated & clarified).  After it chills, I'll serve it with plain Greek yogurt on top.  Yum - a taste of summer!

I have an odd movie from the library called Tip Toes that's described as a combination screwball comedy and film noir. It's French, and Isabelle Hupert is in it.

Right.  I think my hunch has been that it's not only not enough like the Bergman, but also not funny enough in its own right.  I do look forward to seeing the cast, which I'll appreciate infinitely more now than I would have back then.

I wonder if it has any relation to the musical, "Tip-Toes (http://castalbums.org/recordings/Tip-Toes-1998-New-York-Concert-Cast/2665/)"?

That's why I said for DR Elmore to toss it over his shoulder and I'd catch it.  I played The Mute when he directed THE FANTASTICKS here in Middletown in 1979 and that's business from the show.  Through the run, I was 7 for 8, only missing one catch in 4 performances (and that was without my glasses!).  An audience  member caught the one I didn't and we ad libbed a nice "moment."

So, I survived the scan and now have an appointment a week from Monday with the nurse practitioner who runs the vein clinic at our cardiologist's office.  There, indeed, is some venous insufficiency that may need to be dealt with.  At least there's no blood clot...

We may lose our lighting person - there are two things in the script that bother her and which she feels hurts our character from being a role model.  Needless to say, this is odd to me - she is not a dramaturg, she's a lighting designer.  If I'd wanted to write a show that would be pablum and watered down so that not one person could take offense at anything, well, I would never write that show - that kind of "safe" drama does not interest me.  So, here they are:  She doesn't like that Molly talks about her period and how awful it is, how she feels and her wondering why boys don't have to have periods.  It's a half-page monologue that leads into a monologue about sex education being taught to twelve year olds.  Yes, we go there.  Yes, Sami loves those monologues and much of the content came from her experiences.  Frankly, I think most fourteen year old girls would tell you they don't like having a period.  The fact that our character goes there is because that's who she is - she'll talk about anything.   Now, is the audience taken aback when she first says, "Here's a question I think needs answering - who here thought girls having a period was a good idea?"  When no one reacts, she says, "Exactly."  Now I will tell you when the word period comes out of her mouth you can feel the audience going "Did she really just say that?  Is she really going to talk about that?"  It happened at our reading and it happened at the workshop and I LIKED that it happened.  But as Molly continues and they realize "Yeah, she is going there" they start to laugh and they're completely with her by the end of it as we go into the sex ed monologue, which, in content, is stronger than the period monologue, but again, they TEACH this crap to twelve year olds so my feeling is - fair game to yak about.  The other thing is Molly doesn't love science and she hates math, and this lighting person took exception to that.  Well, sorry, there are probably hundreds of thousands of students who will tell you the same thing.  Should I rewrite Molly and have her say "I love all my classes and teachers and all my fellow students." - I don't think so.  First off, she likes one specific aspect of science (dissecting frogs) and second off, yes, she hates algebra and doesn't understand when it will ever help her in her life.  So what?  She DOES algebra, she passes algebra but she doesn't, in my opinion, have to LIKE it or understand it.  However the POINT of that monologue isn't algebra at all - it's to get us to the demonstration of Common Core math - that is its sole purpose, to set that up.

So, I've been told all day I'll hear from this woman and that has yet to happen.  My stage manager, who has worked with her and who brought her to me has told her everything I've just written above and STILL she's hinky about it.  I feel she made a commitment and should stick to it - I also feel it's a lot different reading text on a page without having a single idea of how it will be read or the actor who'll be reading it or the director who'll be directing it.  I would hate to see what she thinks about the musical 13, which has as its young protagonist a kid who just wants to fit in and be accepted by the goons in school and to be popular, and to that end he hurts his two closest friends.  Now, in the end he comes around, but we've spent the entire play not liking him and by the time he came around I was not interested.  Then there's all the cliche stuff about kissing and tongue - I avoid all of that cliche crap completely in our show.  But objecting to a character's CHARACTER means that this woman must have problems with ninety percent of every play in history.  I just do not get it and I wish she'd just call and we can see if this is going to work out or not - and if she's not behind it I really don't want her to light it.  When I told Sami and her mom about it, they were like, "WHAT?"  People.  I gotta tell you.

It's been a John Barry day and I've been listening to Richard Rodney Bennett singing Harold Arlen. To add to that eclectic mix, I also was listening to The Naked Gun music by Ira Newborn.

Then, I found "My Dream Is Yours" on the internet and have been alternating between that and "Murder on the Orient Express" as well as some Looney Tunes.

Summing all this up sounds looney tunes as I'm all over the map!

My mother used to destroy squash. She'd cook it for hours and hours until it dissolved into this mush.

I always swore she bought a steamer the day after I left for college.

I still feel slightly queasy if somebody says they're serving squash, but most of the time they know how to prepare it.

I saw a Williams-Sonoma ad the other day for air fryers. I love the concept, but they were saying you can use them to make kale crisps. kale crisps? Does anyone eat kale crisps? I've never even heard of them.

Trendy crap. More like a garnish than a real food.

Actually, I think it makes sense as a garnish.

Didn't it used to be a garnish??

For dessert tonight, we had panko-breaded, deep-fried Oreos with vanilla ice cream. Yes, the plate was cleaned within five minutes.

Yummy!

I'm glad to hear that was your dessert. In the NYTimes the other day a woman shared her recipe for homemade vanilla ice cream. I have no doubt it's quite delicious. She then said she puts a scoop of it into her breakfast smoothie. Uh, no.

Oh, no. No, no. No, no, no. And a thousand times no.

Why?  What is wrong with that?

Why would you put ice cream in a drink that has all those vegetables in it? Think of spinach and vanilla ice cream together. Then think of me losing lunch in the sink.

Because if you start the day with ice cream, then what will you eat for dessert? (And think of the pounds you'd pack on. At least I would.)

Years ago (long before memes came into existence), I saw a bumper sticker that said, "Life is uncertain enough. Eat dessert first."

:))

Jane, I think you need to invest in an inexpensive little flask...then you'll never have to resort to begging for booze again.

;)

Chuckling away here.  I didn't need to beg as I had more than enough wine tonight.

I had a very nice time and my almond macaroons were a big hit.  I wish I had mafe more instead of my oatmeal cookies which were yummy, in my opinion anyway.

So I took myself the the roadhouse for a steak dinner

After one of your long days.  I would have scrambled eggs or had a salad and crashed.

I believe  kale chips are very popular, or the latest fad

Funny, you think veggies and I think fruit for a breakfast smoothie.
