Title: THE FINAL PREVIEW

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were final, and now it is time for you to post until the final cows come home.

I didn't get a chance to post yesterday in the late afternoon because things froze up just when I had to leave to usher for a local production of "To Kill a Mockingbird."  I just finished reading the book a few weeks ago, so it was all pretty fresh in my mind.  I thought that it was a very good production with some very good performances.  The girl playing Scout was pretty good, but I think her energy and concentration lagged as the play went on...not horribly, but noticeably.  She is very young.  The actress is about the real age that Scout is supposed to be.

The audience was filled and they loved it.  A woman two seats away from me was crying at the end.  I wasn't affected by it that much (there were some nits to pick...bad accents...enunciation...volume), but I really did enjoy it.  Interestingly, a couple of actor friends of mine saw it and hated it.  Just did not like it at all.  I'll definitely need to find out what was so bad about it.  I know I can be more forgiving (aka...my standards are lower), but I don't see how someone could "hate" it.

Today, my sister is helping with a charity fund raising walk around downtown Olympia (I don't know which charity) in the morning, and she volunteered me to help.  Then I think we're supposed to walk the walk.  That will be fine but I'd better remember some sunscreen.

The TOD:

The stage manager:  The director wants to cut the line "He was just saying how happy he is to be right here with all of us" and replace it with "Nothing."
I said, replace it with Nothing?
The stage manager said, yes, that's right.
Me: You mean you want to cut the line?   That won't make sense, it'll sound ridiculous, like there's a set-up question with no follow-up, so you'd have to cut the line before it too.
(Confusion for a while, with me just not getting what the stgae manager was saying)
The stage manager says:  No, we're not asking to cut the line, the director wants the character to actually say "Nothing" so it'll be like "What were you all giggling about?"  "Oh, nothing."
Me:  Oh, that could work and get to the song quicker [and I was thinking maybe even get a laugh in context.  Really good thinking on the part of the director.]
Stage manager:  Great.

On the tax work front, I'd say there were lots of annoying moments over the years, I wouldn't classify anything I can think of as embarrassing.

This seemed to go over nicely when I posted it in the NYT comments, my parody-tribute to the new apps for Fashion Week making it available to the whole city rather than the elite few.

Nice that there’ll be apps and other ways to make the Fashion Week experience more democratic.

Tune of “Always True To You in My Fashion”

In the past a Fashion Week
Was exclusive to the chic
Now this Week it’s us they seek, so shout hooray
There are always apps to use when they’re talking fashion
There are always apps to use to hear what they say

So we’ve never gotten snaps
For our jackets or our wraps
Grab their apps and stylish chaps will look our way
There are always apps to use when they’re talking fashion
There are always apps to use to hear what they say

I’m a fashion-challenged mess
Who just can’t dress for success
Now this mess
Can nonetheless
Make out okay

There are always apps to use when they’re talking fashion
There are always apps to use - to hear what they say

TOD:

When I was seven, my family and I went to Germany to visit Mom's side of the family. While we were there, I got kicked in the stomach by a cow and ended up in a pile of manure. My sisters were kind enough not to let me live that down. And if that incident didn't convince my dad that I was not cut out to be a farm boy, nothing would -- and nothing really has.

We walked around Capital Lake and it only took about a half hour.  At the end, they announced over the loudspeakers that they had taken in over $20,000 that morning so far, which is more than they got last year.  Their goal was $25,000 and they felt confident that they would eventually get closer to that amount.  It was a good event.  I drove my sister home and then came home myself.

The Missouri synod would have a heartbattack in our church... Not only do we have female lay readers, acolytes, communion assistants, deacons and assisting minister but our youth minister and associate pastor are. also female.  On days when our senior pastor is out it can often be all females leading worship

Not a one of 'em!

But that's cool.  It's because no one can see the house unless they're literally coming to visit (houses are spread out, and the hills and trees do a good job of obscuring things), and there are few people in this proximity that are actually close friends.  (I import my friends.  It costs a little more, but what the heck.)

As luck would have it (and how often does luck have it, anyway?  not often enough, if you ask me...), I might have to postpone my own Ohio trip for a couple of weeks due to a car issue that needs to be resolved, and I won't even know what needs to be done till Monday.

Flying isn't an option because I need to make a couple of stops along the way to see other family members.  And the car has to be fixed anyway, of course.  So, if it can't be made right by Monday afternoon, I'll be going over on the 28th instead.

Went and did the Cindy Williams intro - I forgot most of what I was going to say, and that's fine since there were only about thirty people in the 250 seat theater.  I just stated a really interesting factoid, spoke about the school and department, and then introduced Herbie Pilato, the moderator.  It was nice seeing Cindy - she insisted that I'm in the book more than one sentence - but then she began to think all the other stuff may have been edited out - but she said there's a second book coming.

Then I had a turkey sandwich, then came home.  I have flowers for Sami - her show gift won't be ready for a week.

That sounds encouraging.  You should get at least a whole chapter on your friendship...and then humorous anecdotes sprinkled throughout the whole book.

So, I'm just watching TV and flipping channels, and the show that I just watched is called "DC Cupcakes."  It's about two sisters who...guess what...have a cupcake shop in Washington, DC.  They run the shop with their mother.  Guess what they call her?  "Mommy"...just like Adriana Hofstetter!  Not "Mom" or "Mother," but "Mommy."

Then to an assisting minister and deacons meeting where it was announced that there was no be assigned to alter guild for the month of September
Did they check with the Missouri Synod?

The Missouri synod would have a heartbattack in our church... Not only do we have female lay readers, acolytes, communion assistants, deacons and assisting minister but our youth minister and associate pastor are. also female.  On days when our senior pastor is out it can often be all females leading worship

We have female lay readers, acolytes (who serve as a communion assistant), but not assisting minister. We're not that modren.

TOD 2:

I was on the high school quiz team, which would appear annually on a TV show called High Q. Both years we were up against a Southern Indiana team that had one of those quiz show phenoms that knows all the trivia on the planet and beyond. Anyway, we barely got the chance to answer a question. I got all of the questions about the Bible and Shakespeare (all of about three each time) and those were about three of the only four questions that we got right the whole time. I felt embarrassed for the whole team and the school that we didn't do better.

Tonight, Theater Artists Olympia had a movie night!  They showed John Waters' "Cry-Baby," starring Johnny Depp.  I'd never seen it before but it was a lot of fun...very campy and over the top, but really fun.  I'm sure it was a lot more fun seeing it with a bunch of friends as opposed to seeing it by myself.
