And good morning, all!

I will shortly run to the pharmacy for my monthly meds and stop at Zabar's for some bagels and fruit.

This afternoon, I am meeting up with one of my favorite Barnes & Noble co-workers at Artie's. I haven't seen Jeff in maybe seven years, since he married and moved out of the City, and I look forward to catching up.

Now here's a blast from the past: 1981, Men's Chorus Christmas concert retreat at the Appel Farm, Lord knows where!

My friend Charlie Carson, who asked me to be one of his lifelines when he won a lot of money on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" around 1999, sent me this this morning. I'm carrying my work to accomplish during the rehearsal. The two gentlemen with me are Ora McCreary, who tried unsuccessfully to teach me gow to play games on his computer - I stank - and Martin Teitel, one of the Chorus' first AIDS casualties, a talented director and good soul who deserved a longer life.

I liked the "Love and Mercy" movie very much. I appreciated that they didn't do what other music movies do and put everyone in a bad wig. But they could have at least got the color right. Landy's real hair is very dark and Brian's real hair is much lighter. But in the movie, they were the exact opposite. John Cusak did an excellent Brian impersonation with his posture. The scene where he first asks his wife out on date, and he's standing there with his neck jutted forward, like a turtle is soooo Brian. And at the end, he's walking around with his hands oddly facing backwards - that's Brian too.
I agree that they skipped a lot of the story in the middle and if I hadn't already known who Landy was and the whole history, I probably would have been confused. I think a big part of that is that - like the bad wigs - they didn't want to put anyone in a fat suit. Fat suits never look real - the face always ends up looking like Weird Al in the "Fat" video. So, they just kind of had to skip over all the years with Brian being really fat and that's when Landy was first brought in. Did you know that at one point they fired him because he was so expensive, but then Brian got fat again, so they brought that sicko back?? Geez, why didn't they just send him to some Weightwatchers meetings?
Anyway, they seemed to really play up the notion of his wife being a major whistle-blower in the whole thing, to the point of making it seem like the rest of the family didn't care about Brian at all and really neglected him. I was struck by the scene of her on her balcony making all those phone calls to his mother and brothers, pleading with them, and it seemed to accentuate the notion that the family did nothing to help him. I wonder if it really played out like that or if there's more to the story. If I was in that family (most of whom are dead now anyway) and I saw the movie, I think I'd be pretty pissed off.

Well, it was fun and interesting and enlightening going to a record faire for the first time in however many years.  Since my idea of prices on used vinyl are some two decades out of whack, I've had to come to terms with some sticker shock -- both at the local record emporium and at this event.

I think a lot of people's ideas of what their stuff is worth is pretty inflated, but it certainly has a lot to do with the retail prices of the new stuff being issued now.  The better collectible stuff is understandably commanding a lot more now.  I tried looking at today's offerings as through the eyes of someone just getting excited about vinyl, and quickly realized that if I were just jumping into the game, it would probably last about five minutes before I'd have to declare myself insolvent.  I'm just SO glad I got the good sh stuff back when I did...AND knew how to take care of it.

Anyway, I came home with just a few goodies, the best being a beautiful copy of KENTON - LIVE FROM THE TROPICANA.  It couldn't have been played or even handled but once or twice in its life -- and it sings, baby, it sings.  Yet another outstanding live performance from this outstanding group of musicians.  I truly don't know how Kenton did it.

So, on the way back (this was in New Paltz, NY, quite the charming sort-of-new-agey college town with a couple of very nice new/secondhand book stores), I stopped in at the Barnes & Noble in Poughkeepsie just for a quick look see, and to pick my feet (when in Rome, etc....).

In their own relatively new vinyl section they were playing records (definitely a good idea) on one of those horrible plastic little record players they're selling now (definitely a terrible idea), through these horrible little tiny portable speakers (another terrible idea).  The music wanted so much to sound good, and I'm sure some of the customers browsing there would have liked really hearing said music... but on this awful little system it just sounded as unimpressive as you can make recorded music sound.  Man, if they'd set up the most minimal REAL turntable/amp/speakers from, say, the 1960s, you'd have people stopping and marveling at the sound.  That, of course, is a pipe dream.  You'd sell records, but you'd never sell another of those horrible pieces of crap, and the manufacturers of said crap would never go for that idea.  Anyhoo.....just one man's observation.

I had the strangest dream last night that woke me up out of a deep sleep.  I was at my parents' house where I grew up but it was the present day.  I kept hearing the phone ringing and ringing in the house. I was outside.  I ran into the house and picked up the phone. It was my mom.  She said "Someone just called me" and the phone went dead and I woke up with a huge start.     I talked to her today and she' fine, but it was totally creepy

I'm on my tablet so the edges aren't as clean as they should be and the size is bigger (at least on my tablet), but I was able to capture Cillaliz's unique plateau:

All of a sudden my computer was acting strange.  I couldn't open or close anything.  I called Keith for help.  It didn't take him long to figure out the problem.  He had changed his mouse to a left handed use and it also changed mine ;D

I am now right clicking on my mouse, unless I forget to do so.

My Xs are in the championship series.  It's best of 5.  Right now it's tied 1-1 and the last games are here.  So I will definitely be there tonight (sorry Audra, not going to be at the concert) and tomorrow night.   I'll be all decked out in my Xs clothes cheering like crazy and drinking cheap beer and maybe a hot dog or a brat or two.....GO Xs

I am back from the most wonderful reunion with my friend Jeff and his wife Jennifer, whom I'd never met before. Jeff was one of my best buddies at Barnes & Noble, where he worked part time; he was a primary school teacher, and I remember going to a party he threw that was mostly his friends from school. He met Jennifer  on vacation in Afghanistan; she is a geography teach at the university of Colorado, i believe.  When I last saw Jeff, he had stopped by my apartment to say goodbye; he was getting married and moving to Vermont to be with her. She was then living there and he'd found a teaching job.

So, we had a lovely 2.5 hour lunch at Artie's, and it was a wonderful time. Earlier, I reconnected with my friend Ora in the 1981 photo; I hadn't seen him in 25 years, but i found him on eBay. It's been a good day for a birthday.

Tomorrow we are having our wonderful realtor, her wonderful contractor/realtor/husband, their office assistance and her son, the contractors assistant for dinner.

I put everything out to make a citrus sour cream cake in my beautiful rose bundt pan.  I forgot I left the pan when we moved and had planned to buy a new one.  After lending it to a friend, who used a knife on it, the cakes never slid out well again.

Now I shall have to use a boring old bundt pan.  This one is old too. I hope it works well.  This will be the first cake baked in our oven.

I've been working the to-do list. There are dozens of things here that need my attention. I've been trying to take care of as many errands as possible before the surgery. I'll try again to obtain some help with the cleaning, but my calendar's so full that much of that will have to wait.

Is your kitchen finished now, Jane?

Yes, which is why they are all coming over.  Our realtor hasn't seen it yet.  The final piece of the kitchen was a leaded glass windowed cabinet that rolls up. It has a drawer for the coffee maker that slides out.  The contractor custom made it for us, putting a lot of time into coming up with the perfect design.  They gifted it to us :)

Keith has not taken photos of the completed kitchen yet.

My mother and her sister (my aunt) are coming to town in a few days and will be staying with us for almost a week. We are really looking forward to the visit. Back from a dance. This group is very weird. They arrive an hour early, then sit and eat for 90 minutes without dancing. But when they start, they don't stop until the last dance. But getting them out of their seats to start takes all but an act of Congress.

It's interesting watching these "Remember WENN" episodes.  I'd forgotten that Bob Dorian introduced these episodes and other AMC movies the way Robert Osbourne and Ben Mankiewicz now introduce shows on TCM.
