Well, you've read the notes, the notes upgraded, and now it is time for you to post until the upgraded cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CAPRIOLE!
-
Topic of the Day:
I don't think my parents ever had any cast recordings when I was growing up. I discovered musicals through friends in school and choir. My parents did have a couple of soundtracks to movie musicals..."My Fair Lady" and "The Sound of Music." Those are the only ones that I can remember.

Good morning, all!
Another night of very strange dreams. I remember none of them now.
-
This is another Columbia day. I need to sharpen some red pencils.
-
DR TCB, I read Mozart in the Jungle, and i gather the TV series has a very different tone. People I know who have seen the series have enjoyed it. My memory of the book is its unflattering/frank depiction of life at the North Carolina School for the Arts.
-
DR vixmom, I'm happy your trip is going so nicely.
-
The Pope's imminent arrival has Manhattan in a frenzy. I am very happy I will be spending my time around the apartment and neighborhood during his stay.
-
We watched Mozart in the Jungle, and enjoyed it as entertainment. It's a bit over the top, including Bernadette. But still enjoyable. It's not very realistic in terms of its depiction of the classical music business.
-
TOD:
I grew up living in suburban Connecticut, just over a hour from NYC by train, and my father worked in Manhattan. My mother would often go in, meet my father after work, and they'd go see a musical. And sometimes, not long after, the LP would appear on the shelf. How I used to love poring over the Playbills the morning after each of these outings!
There were many LPs, but the ones I remember most are The King and I, Carousel, and Company. And all the classical stuff - but that's not the TOD.
-
Glad that everything worked out for bk, computer-wise. Those "ransom" bombs are, indeed, quite scary. And it sounds like you got competent, friendly, and helpful assistance - which is nice to hear, and altogether rare these days.
-
I've been Peanutized!

Just finished listening to all the sound samples for the Welcome to My World cast album. They sound great, and Sami sounds great. And I really really like the songs, from what I have heard so far. Can't wait to give this a spin!
-
TOD:
There were so many cast albums in our house. My mother loved Broadway shows, so one was always on the record player.
MY FAIR LADY
THE MUSIC MAN
CAMELOT
KISS ME KATE
SOUTH PACIFIC
DAMN YANKEES
FANNY
etc., etc. etc.
-
BK,
That story about the Apple scam is scary. Indeed, being a Mac person, I've taken notes from you blog on how to fix it.
We've been getting constant phone calls from people saying that we have a problem on our computer(s) and they will fix it if we give them access. All the callers have a foreign accent, and we hang up on them.
Be careful what you "click: on.
-
Good morning, all.
A pretty solid sleep, culminating in one of my typically crazy dreams involving twenty-year-old work and people situations seamlessly merged with present day situations. Glad to be out of it. Out, damned spot. Good riddance.
-
TOD
It was my uncle whose cast album of THE MUSIC MAN was the first I was ever aware of. I didn't really know what a musical was, but I loved the sound of it and would ask him to put it on when at their house. I don't know why he had it at that time because he wasn't a musical lover or theater-goer at all, to my knowledge. But he did have reason to be in NYC along with my dad a year or two later, and they took the opportunity to see the show - in standing room.
My mom and dad had seen SOUTH PACIFIC on an early trip to NYC after Martin and Pinza were out of it. They didn't get the album, but several years later after we saw the movie (which is what introduced me to what a musical actually was), I had to have a recording. The first SOUTH PACIFIC they brought home was a cheap no-name one from the grocery store or some such, but I spent hours in front of that thing getting the music into my head as best I could, always attempting to relive the magic.
Finally -- FINALLY -- they got a console stereo to replace the crappy little record player, joined the Columbia Record Club, and, in competition with my dad's Mitch Miller albums, I voted on the cast album of SOUTH PACIFIC to be in an early shipment. It's my guess that that was the first real cast album in the house.
-
I just ordered WELCOME TO MY WORLD.
Clips sound fantastic.
-
My sister gave me The Sound of Music for Christmas. I believe I was 11, maybe 12. At the time I had not heard of it.
-
I can't remember which version of The Music Man my parent's had but I'm guessing it was the stage.
-
Bye Bye Birdie - which my aunt ordered by mistake from the record club and promptly gave to us.
-
My dad is not having a good day, so I may not be around much. We shall see.
-
Sorry DR Jrand.
-
Good day vibes for the father of DR Jrand!
-
We were pretty broke most of the time I was growing up, but my mother loved shows. We did have the original cast albums of "South Pacific," "Annie Get Your Gun," "My Fair Lady," "Flower Drum Song" and a bargain bin cast recording of "Kiss Me Kate" (which was actually quite good) which all became a big part of my childhood. The soundtracks of "Gypsy," "Music Man, " "Sound of Music" and "Unsinkable Molly Brown" later made their way into the stack.
-
I keep losing my wifi connection and my arms are driving me crazy thanks to the pouson ivy, or whatever I have, that I got while in Chicago. I think I will take a break.
-
I forgot about My Fair Lady. I'm sure we had that one.
-
TOD:
I'm not sure if the albums my parents had were Broadway cast recordings or movie musical recordings. But they only had three:
The Sound of Music
Fiddler on the Roof
West Side Story
My mother was never a big music fan and my dad mostly had Mozart and Tchaikovsky albums. Anyway, remembering what the covers looked like, I believe Fiddler was a cast recording and Sound of Music and West Side Story were from the movies. I loved them all.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Two!
-
TOD:
We didn't have cast albums in the house or too much music. But there were soundtracks to Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music.
My first cast album was for A Little Night Music. It was a life changer at 13 or so.
-
I really liked "Hunt for Red October"! Yes, it's hard to believe you've never seen it. I don't think I've seen every movie that's based on a Tom Clancy book, but I've seen a few, and that's one of the better ones. I barely remember "Clear and Present Danger".
-
Tuesday afternoon greetings! I was out of here a little before 10am to meet my friend Sue at the University of Dayton (where she works) to retrieve my crockpot. I'd left it at her house on Labor Day because it still had baked beans in it and she still had picnic guests coming and going. We had a quick cup of coffee and she had to get back to work.
-
I have also been Peanutized:

DR Ginny you are green, your dress is blue and yellow, and there are a couple of stripes of magenta going through you. Just a description of the "fun" I am having with my laptop.
-
Hey!
-
TOD: There were NO cast albums around my house when I was growing up. In fact, there were no records in my house after my grandfather remarried and took his hi-fi cabinet with him. I was three or four at that time. On that hi-fi I used to thrill to Les Paul and Mary Ford!
When I was in 6th grade, I received a hi-fi for Christmas. When I was in 9th grade, I discovered the wonderful world of film music...all kinds including film musicals. Very slowly, I began to discover film soundtracks and obtaining same.
From there, it was a step away to learn of cast albums. My very first cast album was bought in a cut-out bin: "Greenwillow".
Later came "Maggie Flynn".
Once I was in college, I began discovering others in the school libraries (regular and music)..."She Loves Me', "Fiorello", "My Fair Lady", "Camelot" and "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd".

Vibes for DR JRand's dad!!!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We attempted to write ASUS regarding the problem. It kept saying a box was not filled out with our info. All the boxes were filled. Every time we attempted to send and it was not accepted we had to fill the info in again.
GROAN!
-
And i am home from Columbia with a few fixes to make to a coupler of numbers.
-
Sorry to hear about your dad, DR JRand65!

We've been getting constant phone calls from people saying that we have a problem on our computer(s) and they will fix it if we give them access. All the callers have a foreign accent, and we hang up on them.
Sometimes I play with these guys, Druxy. I follow their directions (they think) and go to the computer, and when they tell me what to click on, I tell them that a popup window popped up, which surprises them. I tell them I'm getting my glasses on so I can read it to them: "For goodness sake, hang up the phone; they are trying to scam you."
They usually hang up on me.
-
;D :)
-
My dad had classical music, which I didn't appreciate at the time. He would play the Peer Gynt Suite for me sometimes.
I remember my mom buying an LP of the Sound of Music after I saw the movie with a neighbor. I was confused. Who was this Mary Martin person? She didn't sound at all like Maria.
-
I'm up, I'm up. I think I got at least nine hours of sleep. Tummy is a bit contentious and the headache doesn't seem to want to go away.

TOD - the first show recording I remember is my sister's OKLAHOMA movie soundtrack, which was on 45s. The first OBC album I remember is THE MUSIC MAN, which we got shortly after seeing the road company in Detroit when I was 8. That was my first live professional Broadway show, starring Forrest Tucker and Joan Weldon.

I'd recently seen a couple of headlines about Macs starting to get more viruses than ever before. I didn't read the articles because I don't have a Mac, but I got the impression that they were warning people about the increase in Mac viruses. :-\

Most of our albums were classical and I loved sitting with my father listening to them.
That is funny about Maria.

Not at all. The Downton Abbey thing Ron put up makes me sick to look at. It is green, purple, and magenta and moves. ;D

We had Showboat which I expect was the stage album. Oklahoma was from the movie.

I have to head out again shortly. I'm meeting my friend Val from Barnes & Noble for dinner. There's a new Chinese place we want to check out.

I was in high school when I discovered my first official Sondheim cast recording on my own. "A Little Night Music" was the album where I first noticed the name of Stephen Sondheim. :)

I'm loving the stories of today's topic.
-
Me too. It brings to mind the record-playing scene in THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH. I don't remember the particulars. Isn't THE KING AND I one of the albums he offers to put on?
-
I do think we are the one generation or group of generations that can have such a reminiscence. And not just because people don't grow up with actual records nowadays. Broadway shows were a real part of the "dialogue" in our collective youth.

Nice! I have a picture of me as Charlie Brown at home. I think I know where it is. If I remember to find it, I'll scan it and post it. :)

The French Roast sounds like someplace we'd like!
-
Great photo, DR Ginny !
-
TOD: We had My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music and Funny Girl. I really liked the first two the best. I didn't really become a Barbra fan till I saw the movie.
-
DR Laura--Brent B tells a similar story. He asked for The Sound of Music album for Christmas, expecting the soundtrack. A relative gave him the Broadway cast album and he said who is Mary Martin ?
-
I fell back asleep - I think it was my tummy problems messing with me. Up at about one, and have been relaxing. Gathered up most of the sheet music I need and still have one song to choose.
-
Well, it looks like it's going to be a commuter nightmare tomorrow, with the
Pope in town. I'm hoping that the big crowds will still be at the Mass when it's time for me to go home. I don't there will be that much of a problem in the morning since I leave home at about 5:30 am. I'm taking Metro as usual.
-
Health vibes for JRand's father.
-
I received a box from Kritzerland today. Nice shirt and mug, BK!
-
I just listened to the audio samples (http://www.kritzerland.com/WelcomeWorld.htm) again. I still like them! ;D
-
A lull.
-
Well, it's time for me to leave work. I'm going home, but in about an hour, I'm going downtown to see Irrational Man (http://olympiafilmsociety.org/irrational-man-2/) with a friend.
Be back later.
-
OH DEAR!!!! I forgot to come to HHW to wish DR Laura a Happy Birthday, I know I did it on FB but not the same....
SO HAPPY BELATED!!!!!!!!
-
Oh my, we had all kinds of cast recordings when I grew up. I remember South Pacific an mom and I would dance around to "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair". I remember Brigadoon, Camelot, My Fair Lady, Carousel, Oliver, man I can't remember them all

Hi JohnG!
-
Were is everyone tonight?
I'm back after watching the season openers of NCIS and NCIS: New Orleans. Before that I was making hotel and plane reservations for a trip to NYC the first week of November.
-
One and 1/2 of my apple trees just died. Dead as a doornail.
-
So, I got out my little chainsaw and cut one down and the dead off the other
-
Then I cut it into smaller pieces so it would fit in the garbage, which will be picked up tomorrow
-
Then I took a shower
-
Then I started playing Candy Crush and watching Dancing With the Stars
-
Then I had a sandwich
-
Then I came here
-
And that's what I've done since getting home
-
Oh, I did hold Boo for a while
-
And trimmed her claws, which led to her jumping off my lap
-
So what are you doing?
-
Seriously? Where is everyone?
-
Didn't mean to scare you all away
-
Don't know if I mentioned that my team lost. I think I did. It was sad to see the boys so down, but am really glad that the season is over and I can get back into my old routine
-
And get more sleep
-
Boy, don't know what else to say
-
I'm finally starting to catch up at work. It's about time.
-
Well, that's all I know....so I guess I'll go.
-
Glad the Pope isn't coming to my town. Nothing against him, just wouldn't like the traffic
-
I am really trying to get us to page 5
-
It's become my mission in life
-
Many Many Vibes to JRand's father

My job here is done
-
One and 1/2 of my apple trees just died. Dead as a doornail.
Sorry to read that. Do you know the cause?
-
Watched a nifty film noir tonight called The Garment Jungle. Great cast with Lee J. Cobb, a young Robert Loggia and many theatrical types. All about the mob trying to keep the union out of the garment district. Robert Aldrich supposedly directed most of it and got fired about two weeks before the film wrapped.
-
Back from a mediocre dinner at a restaurant that will not be around much longer, and then taping a really fun show with Donald Feltham and Sami - that will, most likely, be live tonight.
-
Good night, all.
-
Another great day ...but the week is flying by too fast
-
And we have our last Universal trip planned for tomorrow...so time for bed for this girl
-
Vibes for Jrands Dad

We are watching Bruce play a kazoo ;D

Have fun.
-
I am rapidly losing my mind.
-
Once again I am trying to make time fly.
-
I do not have a call back tomorrow.
-
I have a callback one week from tomorrow.
-
It is scheduled for September 30.
-
Not on September 23.
-
I guess this year isn't moving fast enough for me.
-
Health vibes to Jrand's father.
-
I am sorry that I missed Cilla.
-
I am sorry that I missed Vixmom.
-
But I am glad that she is having such a wonderful time.
-
I need to send BK an e-mail about Welcome to My World.
-
I need to get off of this page.
-
Tomorrow is lunch with the boys.
-
We are eating at a sports bar.
-
But they do have good food.

Their taco salad is the size of Texas.

Finished with my viewing, and am listening to The Broadway Radio Show we taped earlier. http://www.haineshisway.com/the-broadway-radio-show/
-
Seriously? Where is everyone?
I went to the movies. A friend and I saw "Irrational Man" with Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, written and directed by Woody Allen. It was interesting. I enjoyed it on a certain level. Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/irrational_man/) gives it a 42% and the audience score is 54%.
-
I have a callback one week from tomorrow.
It is scheduled for September 30.
Not on September 23.
Better that you thought it was a week early than a week late!
