Well, you've read the notes, the notes were recurring notes, and now it is time for you to post until the recurring cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VOLITANT!
-
First! FIRST!! FIRST!!!
-
And I don't mean Furst.
-
So, good morning, all.
I'm up, and there's nothing to be done about it.
-
I have this lovely Saturday in which to get some things done, but also to take it easy and enjoy some enjoyable enjoyment before being thrust into four days of rehearsal and umpteen performances of a high school holiday program. After next Wednesday night I am free to enjoy the rest of the holidays myself.
-
Happy 100th birthday, Frank!

I am working today, what else? :)
-
But I am not complaining. I am very happy to be gainfully employed.
-
Just wish I had a little more time to feel my way into the holiday spirit.
-
good morning to all

There are two kinds really. Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia.
The former will work if the story behind the songs is interesting enough to spend two hours or so watching the story unfold and the music is popular and familiar enough with the audiences.
It won't work if the show is about a star like Sinatra or Garland. Most people know who they are and each were unique performers. That the actors that would play would be pale imitations of them.
There are exceptions like the musical about Peter Allen The Boy From Oz. Hugh Jackman was great as Allen but the actors who played Garland and Minnelli could never live up to the real stars. When Jackman left the show closed. It was a mixed jukebox musical. It went the Mamma Mia route using songs as story songs and others as performance songs. The former didn't work for me. I never saw Peter Allen perform live but for me the show was really seeing Jackman on stage.
Which brings us to Mamma Mia. Choosing songs that fit the plot. The show was successful because of the songs and the story was just okay (Although its source was never credited) The songs as plot didn't really work for me because lyrics were not written that way. They can't be rewritten.
-
TOD:
Having written what might be described as a "jukebox musical" (i.e. JOLSON), it's my thinking that you can't just depend on the artist's popular book of songs to make it successful. You also need to tell a dramatic story, rather that a just "and then I wrote (or sang)" approach.
JERSEY BOYS, for example, had a good strong story, which is why it was such a big hit. The familiar songs might be the draw to get folks into the theater, but the book is what will make the show last.
You also have to license the songs associated with the artist(s) the show is about. Most of the Al Jolson songs were in the public domain, and getting rights to the others was fairly easy. I send the publishers royalty checks after every production.
On the other hand, ten years later, after a successful staged reading in NY, my Maurice Chevalier play got stuck in limbo because the song licensing process became a mess. It's still doable, but some producer will have to deal with the music publishers. I no longer have the patience and the energy.
My most recent "jukebox musical," Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, is simply looking for a producer and two performers who can do the roles. No music licensing issues here. All of the songs are in the public domain.
:)

Good morning, all.

TOD:
42nd Street was one jukebox musical that worked for me. Gower Champion and the writers simply took the Al Dubin-Harry Warren songbook and filled out the stage with song and movement and color. The story was slight to begin with, so the songs gave something hokey a little more emotional heft and fun.
I saw Smokey Joe's Cafe twice, and while I like the music, it was a better album than it was two hours+ in the theater. It was just one song after another with no dramatic push, no narrative, nothing but a first act of novelty songs and a second act of big hits. Yawn.
-
Saturday morning greetings! I crashed early last night, so woke up before dawn this morning.
-
Thank you to DR Jeanne for the birthday wish from last night.
-
Today I'm going to take Mom a post-birthday treat from Central Pastry.
-
TOD - I agree with BK about BEAUTIFUL and with DRs Michael and Druxy about JERSEY BOYS.
-
Good morning!
-
Good morning, all! The dreams are too vague to remember, but it was quite pleasant dozing in bed and quite an effort to rouse myself. But, I am up and dressed and listening to carols.
-
I have few plans today: continue with the Dreidel Song, tidy up and vacuum, perhaps go to market.
I've decided I need a piano to hear a couple of things, so I hope i can book a space at the Goodman House for an hour on Monday. I decided too late yesterday to call them, and they were already closed for the Sabbath. I'll call tomorrow and see if i can book for Monday morning,

-
I need to make the bed and have some coffee.
-
Piano vibes for DR ELMORE.
No rain vibes for DR TCB.
Yes DR RLP has been MIA and it's about time for his holiday traveling to begin.
-
Oh, and it's 64 degrees here this morning.
-
Oh, and it's 64 degrees here this morning.
Too warm for Dec. 12!
-
When I like a jukebox musical, I prefer to use the nicer-sounding term "catalog musical." :)

Last night I made a batch of Skyline chili, and it was just "off" somehow, both in taste and texture.
First mistake was my choice of grated cheese. I only had some coarsely grated sharp cheddar on hand, and both of those things are wrong: a milder cheddar might be okay (but I'll have to see if they don't use just plain old American), and it must be finely grated.
Secondly, I used a can of their chili and beans, instead of adding my own beans to their plain chili. This mixture is awfully thick. Judiciously adding water a little bit at a time definitely helps bring it close to the proper state, but it's still lacking. I don't think cramming the beans into the same size can (and apparently concentrating the chili, though they don't suggest thinning it out) is successful, at least for me when I'm going for authentic plate- and mouth-feel. I'll happily use up the cans I have, but will go back to getting the plain chili and adding my own pinto beans (I think it's pinto they use).
Thirdly, again my fault entirely, I only had a tiny bit of spaghetti handy so I used medium shells instead. I happen to love shells, and I think they would work better for Cincinnati Chili than they did last night, but I didn't prevent their sticking together enough and they were just a little too "al dente" for this dish. All my bad. As they say.
At least I chopped the onion up nicely.
But hey. Those chili flavors and the basic combination itself are SO DAMNED WONDERFUL that it can take a little mishap or three and still satisfy. Made at home, this joins the ranks of the great comfort foods.
-
Oh, and it's 64 degrees here this morning.
Too warm for Dec. 12!
Sun's out now, and we're having 60 today and tomorrow, which means it'll probably feel like summer in NYC.
-
Speaking of Dec. 12...
Happy 100th Birthday, Mr. Sinatra.
-
Also speaking of Dec. 12...
Page the Deuce!
-
I probably need to watch my phraseology on that one.
Doesn't really work. Sounds a little too much like "Page the Duke!" or some such.
-
OK, I need to get on with my day - bye for now!
-
TOD:
I loved both "Mamma Mia" and "Jersey Boys"!
I saw "Movin' Out" (based music by Billy Joel) which told a story with dancing while a separate band played and sang the music. I was pretty bored. I really don't like pantomime in dancing. Dancing should be dancing and pantomime should be pantomime. The two don't mix.
I'm really scared to see "Night at the Opera" but I imagine I will someday, if it ever comes here.
-
Good morning.

It seems that Marjorie Lord - of Make Room for Daddy - passed away on November 28, at the age of 97.

DR George, I'm glad last nigt went well. Vibes tonight is terrific.

Today we are having our new beds delivered. I continue to be impressed with Standar Appluance in Portland.

They didn't get me THIS time - today's Facebook idiocy are the shocked posts that Harry Morgan has died. Yes - in 2011.

I've never heard that term before.

Wouldn't "Smokey Joe's Cafe" be considered a musical revue and not really a "jukebox musical"? That, of course, has nothing to do with whether you liked it or not. That's a separate issue.

Thanks and thanks, Jane! :D

Well, now that I've caught up with all the posts, I must now get ready to go to work. I need to finish the last step of the fiscal year rollover that I started last night, but couldn't finish. It requires, however, an administrative password that I don't have.
-
I sent an e-mail to the entire Computer Services staff (there is a departmental e-mail that goes to all of them at one time), and the new CS manager replied that someone would be in today who could help me. So, I'm off.
Have a good day, all!
-
Where is everyone?
-
I mean besides Laura... She is obviously making guacamole for the neighborhood

It is such a lovely day....here....

Well, someone was here with the correct password, and it worked! And now, the fiscal year rollover is done! There are some problems that we need to clean up, but it otherwise we're set for the new year.

This time it is taking much longer to put the beds together.
-
It is a good thing I was tired of the treadmill at the clubhouse and returned home. They arrived early.
-
Gotta go...again. :)
-
Keith dropped me off at the clubhouse so I wouldn't get wet before going in. On the way home I actually had an umbrella which I rarely use. I wish I had left it at home as the wind whipped it inside out and I got wet.
-
Georte, glad your problem was fixed.

Back from an omelet and a bagel. Picked up a couple of packages - one contained the April 15, 1941 copy of Vogue. I have been trying to find this issue for five years. For a time I didn't even know WHAT issue it was of Vogue, all I knew was it was 1941 and Vogue came out twice a month in those days, so it was like a needle in a haystack. I've had for some time a piece of original art and all I knew it was Vogue 1941 and the artist name of Milena Pavlović-Barili (she went by Milena). I bought a few Vogue issues from that year with no luck finding it - I was told it was probably some kind of painting for an ad. And Vogue back issues of that era are very pricey so I couldn't just keep buying without being sure. Then about two years ago I Googled extensively and finally found a reference to the artist in a book on Amazon - and there was my painting, called Mound of Beauty and the exact issue it had appeared in. Then I searched it regularly on eBay for two years solid - every other issue from that year eventually showed up, except mine. I finally found it via Google and a back issue magazine dealer - it was reasonable and it's now mine. Not an ad but a full page painting for an article on how to keep one's face beautiful. The painting is small but stunningly realized - quite Dali-esque and simply gorgeous. I'll put a photo of it in tomorrow's notes.
-
I just heard from the Kaufman Center. I have a studio at noon on Monday. This is great since I've jut laid out the first 11 pages of the Dreidel Song, written all the transition material, and I'm ready to tackle the three verses before I can decide on the coda.
-
Very nice MR BK......patience is sometimes rewarded handsomely.
-
John, George and Tom. Did you get your parcels yet? They were shipped the same day Jack's was shipped
Mine arrived yesterday. Thank you so very much.

You're right, George. So here's another show that didn't work for me: nice Work if You Can Get It. Lumbering script and overused Gershwin songs shoehorned into unfunny situations. The Bwsy production only had Judy Kaye going for it.
For jukebox movie musicals, I must mention my illogical love for At Long Last Love.
-
Back from my errands and a visit with Mom. The errands were very fruitful and the visit had its moments - good and bad. I arrived home to find 2 Christmas trees ready to be trimmed. Our artificial tree is in the family room and Rob and Mary Linda's fresh-cut tree is in the living room. It smells wonderful!

Vixdad. the Vixter and I decorated the front lawn today - wearing t shirts.... our neighbor doing his yard work wearing shorts
And I blew leaves (yes, again, but this should be the last of it (famous last words)) in a tropical print short sleeve shirt. Felt wonderful.
-
I daresay Long Island is a bit more tropical than Western Connecticut, at least now that the evening's cooling down. People are probably out on their patios and decks, grilling meats.
-
One more day of this loveliness, then a bit cooler again for a few days. Too bad I have to spend tomorrow in a high school auditorium. Oh, the things we'll do for money...
-
Vixmom left. Must have run outside to start up the grill.
-
i am still trying to clear out stuff I don't need to make room for the myriad boxes of stuff that arrived from Canada when Vixgranny and Vixgrandad moved to assisted living

This place looks like a warehouse! :P

Oh my goodness, DR vixmom - I read "whorehouse." Didn't seem characteristic. :P

Well, it was officially announced this afternoon - they've extended the insurance deadline to 12/28. Thereby effectively ruining the holidays of everyone who has been trying diligently to serve the public.
-
Just to be clear - so far as I know, this only applies to MN residents, so if you are seeking health insurance for yourself or loved ones, your conditions may vary.

Yet another moron opens a Paypal dispute because he wants to know when his Victor Young Volume 2 is going to ship. First, moron, it wasn't even slated to ship until the third week of December. Second, moron, we're real easy to contact - our e-mail address is all over our website. Third, moron, they came in early and were all shipped last Wednesday. Now having that information, moron, have the decency to shut down the dispute. Didn't happen. Fourth, moron, here is your stinking tracking number which a) shows that it was sent exactly when I said it was, and b) that it's slated for delivery to you on Monday. Shut down the damn dispute. Nope, still there to annoy me, so I just wrote the moron a cherce e-mail and if it's not shut down by the time I get home from the Gardenia, he'll get an even more cherce e-mail and I will never accept another order from him. Then I'll call Paypal on Monday and they'll shut it down - they now have the tracking number and it will show as delivered on Monday. Buh bye, moron.
-
Oh my goodness, DR vixmom - I read "whorehouse." Didn't seem characteristic. :P
Trust me, t would be an improvement.

Oops, I haven't been sitting here like so much fish. Left a while ago to warm up last night's turkey tetrazzini for dinner and then Richard and I went to the Kramers' for a champagne and dessert open house. We saw many of my AAUW friends and many people from our former church. We've been home about an hour and I just opened the computer to find myself still logged in.

You are welcome :)

I am here at the theater with my dad. Several other actors are here, so we're getting ready for our second and last night of reading.
-
So, now I must go. After the show, I have to drive my dad home, then a friend and his husband are having a party, so I'll go to that...I'll be late to that, but it'll still be going on.
Have a good rest of the evening, all!

You didn't mention DR TCB, so it must not be the OLD actor's group. ;)

Hi Tom

It hurts to take a breath, let alone try to type.
-
I am off to bed I need to be at church in7 hours
-
But other than that I had a very nice day.
-
Oh no!!! Tom is there an open urgent care that could see you?
-
The drive to Seattle was pure Hell without all the flames.
-
Oh no!!! Tom is there an open urgent care that could see you?
No, I will just try sleeping with a heating pad.

Tom do you have one if those monitor buttons that you can wear and call for help if you need it? I worry about you

I am glad you are here, Vixmom. I was worried when we didn't see you last night.

It hurts to take a breath, let alone try to type.

Sorry it was such an exhausting week I just was wiped out and fell asleep

I assume there are flames in Hell. I have never visited myself.

Well fortunately I only live 7 miles from the office . So it is not a long drive home

Well no one can say we did not get to page 6
-
Well no one can say we did not get to page 6
Oh, I am sure someone will say it.
-
The Seattle Pops concert was wonderful. I loved the two soloists, but the program is in the other room so I will have to give their names tomorrow.
-
Actually the program was on my wheelchair. The female soloist, who was in the "live" broadcast of THE WIZ, was Capathia Jenkins. The male singer was Tony DeSare. They were both excellent.
-
The drive home was not nearly as bad as the drive up. It was only sprinkling coming home, but the traffic was horrible, as usual.
-
The two lovely ladies seem to have abandoned me.
-
The drive to Seattle was pure Hell without all the flames.
Flames??
I assume there are flames in Hell. I have never visited myself.
Thanks for explaining ;D
I gather it was a hard rain.

Back from a club act - very good. The moron still hasn't closed the case. Monday it will be delivered and as soon as that happens Mr. Moron gets another missive and Paypal will get a call and I won't hang up until they remove it.

The drive to Seattle was pure Hell without all the flames.
Flames??
I assume there are flames in Hell. I have never visited myself.
Thanks for explaining ;D
I gather it was a hard rain.
It was coming down in buckets, and cats and dogs, and any other term you can come up with for torrential rain.
-
It was pretty much the same here. I'm not sure what time it eased up-sorry you had to drive in it.

Oh it was worth it. The concert really helped improve my Christmas spirit. The Seattle Symphony is really a wonderful orchestra. Taylor Swift just gave them a donation of $50,000.00.

The weather is expected to improve for the next few days.

Several other actors are here
You didn't mention DR TCB, so it must not be the OLD actor's group. ;)
Within this bunch, I am the oldest actor.

I managed to throw my back out a little while ago.

Tonight's Poe reading went quite well!
-
My dad really enjoyed it. He loves the works of Poe, so he was looking forward to it.
-
The next evening of readings won't be until March. The website (http://olytheater.com/words/) indicates that Shakespeare will be next, but people have been saying that the earliest (meaning very scary) versions of the Grimm fairy tales are next.
