Post by: FJL on December 21, 2015, 02:05:50 AM: About empty seats at the Star Wars showings, with so many news sources (including CNN, which is usually reliable about such things) seeming to say you have to be so lucky just to get a ticket, that seems to have made Disney need to respond by taking ads that specifically tell people that seats are available. So Disney has decided not to go with the approach of making people feel it is an impossible-to-get ticket.

Today's fee will pay for my gifts for the building super and my brother and sister-in-law. I'll be scrounging for money until my pension lands on Jan. 2. For the third year is a row, my social security is not getting a cost of living rise in payment and that is lousy news.

I saw it at the Plitt in Century City, and not even right away, probably a few weeks after it opened there. I liked it okay but I was never fanatical about it. (I appreciate it much more now than I did in those years.) Anyhoo, I went on a weeknight and the crowds in Century City weren't crazy at all. Actually, maybe this was later in the run.

Something I've always remembered is that Star Wars was the first, or one of the first, movies in which there was a big deal made about this newfangled "Dolby" system. Dolby noise reduction on tape had been with us, but this was its big debut on film. (I think...?)

I'm not going to be a spoiler, but I found the ending to be very disappointing.

With virtually all questions answered, the series should have ended last night...but it didn't.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has been running a David Lynch / Jacques Rivette festival, all of which I have unfortunately had to miss due to an insane schedule this past week. But I can get to today's showings of Mulholland Dr. and Celine and Julie Go Boating.

The latter was my first Rivette, and the only film of his I'd ever seen until just recently. A friend dragged me to it at the Nuart in the late '70s, and my memories of its magical little story and its rhythms haunted me for years. It finally appeared on a two-tape VHS set, and later on a very nice U.K. DVD set which is still the best home video version available. I revisited it again a few months ago and really loved it. And as much as I love Mulholland, I'd never gone to see it at a theater, so I'm especially looking forward to basking in both of these today in lovely 35mm.

Sadly, I never see movies in the theater. Mark and I seem to only be interested in seeing live shows. I'm not sure why that is, but we've always been that way.
As for television, I really enjoyed the performances of Jean Smart and Ted Danson in "Fargo". These were very different roles for both of them, especially Jean Smart, and I thought they did very well. Smart had always been such a beauty queen and for her to go out there looking so much older and wearing almost no make-up was very gutsy and I really applaud her for doing it.

The crowd was HUGE....and we didn't get seated until the scroll was running.....but I remember the image of that gigantic spaceship that just kept going and going and going.....

We loved the movie and the music..... And I saw two of the sequels or whatever they're called before I gave up on them..... I haven't seen one for decades....

We went from there to Barnes & Noble, where I did a little Christmas shopping, and then I proceeded to my papercrafting store to pick up a special order. Not that I have any time this week to play at my art desk, but I'd been nagging Joan about these items and thought I'd better get them right away. My last stop was a visit with Mom, who was pretty down today. The mailbox full of Christmas cards and the presents from Becky perked her up a bit.

Post by: bk on December 21, 2015, 02:42:51 PM: Watching more of Making a Murderer - not sure I'll have a voice after finishing it, because this is one documentary where, if you have a thinking brain, you will be screaming at the TV from the behavior of not only the cops coercing statements from a clearly mentally challenged sixteen-year-old, but that same sixteen-year-old's attorney's investigator doing the same after the kid has written out a statement that says he didn't do anything, with a complete timeline. The asshole makes him do another, literally coerces him to do another by telling him he can't help him unless he does. The fact that I already know the outcome of the trial leaves only one thing - to watch how this corruption continues during trial. It is one of the most shocking things you will ever see, and the fact is there are so many lies and deceitful things going on that after this documentary gets traction, one can only hope that some sane person somewhere, whether lawyer or government official, takes a long, hard look at this.

The teen's mom gets her son to request a different attorney, due to the fact that his attorney thinks he's guilty and coerced him into a statement that was then shared with the investigating detectives. And the damn judge won't allow it. I'm serious here - they should all be fired, disbarred or whatever, every single one of these ASSes. Especially the teen's attorney - when you see this guy and his publicity seeking nerd demeanor you will want to slug him in the face. I have never seen anything like this. And I'm not even finished with episode four yet. They have all these recorded phone calls where this kid continuously says he did nothing and knows nothing of Avery doing anything - over and over - and saying that the detectives played games with his mind, confused him, and that he finally just guessed at what they wanted to hear. I'm guessing none of these phone conversations will find their way into the trial, but we'll see. The fact that they exist (as do hundreds of other conversations, including two that Avery had with his fiance at two points on the day and evening of the purported killing), is just crazy to me that no one has done anything to get this thing back in court. You wonder why people hate the damn justice system? Look no further than this documentary.

And then Avery's attorney's get a court order to unseal the evidence from his wrongful conviction case - they find the container containing Avery's blood sample has been tampered with and opened, the blood inside from over a decade or two prior is liquid and there's a hole in the cap - obviously the defense believes that someone put a syringe in it and then planted the blood in the vehicle. End of episode four. Unbelievable.
