Title: SLICING AND DICING AND CHOPPING AND MINCING - THE DAY OF THE DO
Post by: bk on December 24, 2015, 01:04:00 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes sliced and diced and chopped and minced, and now it is time for you to post until the slicing and dicing and chopping and mincing cows come home.  They don't really mince, they MOOnce.

And continued from yesterday:

Getting Christmas Eve day off is very nice...especially like this year where we get a four-day weekend without using our own vacation time.  We don't get New Year's Eve day off, but all the buildings have to close early, so next week, since New Year's Day is on Friday, we'll get a three-day weekend. :D

Well, there's no getting around it -- I have to brave the crowds and the parking lots this morning in order to pick up a few necessities.  The worst of it will probably be Costco, from whence I must schlep a couple of 44-pound boxes of cat litter.  Shame on me for putting that off till today.  I also need half a dozen things from a regular supermarket.  Oy.  And, while I'm at it, Vey.

BK,

Glad to see that you're finally going to CreateSpace.

I sell quite a few of my play scripts through that venue every month...and do get an occasional production.

You should also put the script onto Kindle.  I sell as many, if not more, scripts through Kindle every month as I do via CreateSpace.  You might also consider doing an audio version through ACX.

Two more suggestions:

1. Create a YouTube trailer for the script and post it on FB and any other website that might be of interest.  A trailer is a terrific selling tool.

2. Every now and then, do a search on YouTube for your play.  Some folks, mostly students, will perform scenes from your play (usually not very well), then post it on the web.  In the past year or two, I've removed 2 illegal performances of CLARA BOW from YouTube.  A bad performance of your play on YouTube does not help sell it.

Good luck!

I slept late.

For the past hour, I have been busy with my Wright State University friend Jim and his brother who visited me on Tuesday. They've been at LaGuardia waiting for a plane since around 8:00 last night. Their 10:30 flight was canceled, and they're now booked on a flight at 10:30 this morning.

Last night I had several dreams: one was very much like the beginning of a porn movie with voyeuristic nudity. I remember none of the others now - what do you expect after the first? - but I do remember I dreamed of colors, lots of blue and green.

DR ELMORE the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that dreaming of blue may symbolize your spiritual guide and your optimism of the future. You have clarity of mind....and dreaming of green signifies a positive change, good health, growth, fertility, healing, hope, vigor, vitality, peace, and serenity. The appearance of the color may also be a way of telling you to "go ahead". Green is also symbolic of your strive to gain recognition and establish your independence.

A Merry Xmas Eve to everyone!  The final countdown to Christmas Broadway Radio Show is now up for a listen.  Today we have the brand new London Cast Recording of ELF!  Based on the hit movie starring Will Ferrell, the musical version debuted on Broadway in 2010 and has become a perennial holiday musical fixture around the country (and was even made into a 30 minute animated special for NBC - worth checking out!).  The show has now made its London debut, which brings us a brand new cast recording featuring the delightful score by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin.  ENJOY and MERRY CHRISTMAS to one and all!

Crisis averted. I went to yelp to see if the florist in my MIL's town has gone out of business. I discovered I had put in an incomplete web address. I needed to add flowersandgifts after the store name to get the right web site. It would have been nice if the owner of the other site had let me know I had the wrong one. I was able to order an arrangement for delivery today.

TOD:

My favorite theatrical experiences this year were The Bad Seed and The Game's Afoot.

I also enjoyed Antigone very much.

I think the one I enjoyed the MOST was the world premiere of The Trouble With Accountants.  I worked with so many new people....and the creative staff were all very talented.  Most of them were in their senior years, so they will have moved on to start their careers, but it was fun.  And I got to do some very FUN stuff.

With all this talk about shows and licensing and whatnot, something I meant to say yesterday is that I will not hesitate to suggest THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X when the time is right.

It's not the right piece for this theater for that particular slot, but it's going to be the right piece for someone around here in hopefully the not too distant future...and I will jump on it when the opportunity arises...and when it will be mine to do, not somebody else's.

I'm up, I'm up - did not fall asleep until very late, like four or four-thirty, so only slept six hours - got up at ten.  Saw the proof already - I did the cover wrong (I really don't know how, either - I would have known but once you upload the file you don't see the result until the proof).  What we were in fact supposed to upload was the front AND back cover AND spine - that information was nowhere to be found - it just tells you to upload the cover and I kept looking for a place to upload the back cover and there wasn't any.  So, I have to resubmit it all today when Doug gets me that PDF file - the interior looks fine to me, although I saw a couple of spacing issues I may as well fix.

Boxing Day is not a holiday here in the USA.  We at the library get the day off because our union-equivalent years ago negotiated to get the day off.  My sister works for the state and is working today.  They don't get the day off.  The library where I work is not a state agency.  We're our own special county taxing district, so we're quite independent in that respect.

For this year, my favorite Christmas carol is once again [wait for it . . . timpani please . . .]:
Carol of the Bells.

I would love if a company released an entire CD of all versions of that song. Bear Family released a CD of different versions of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (and one devoted to "Unchained Melody" if I recall) and another label put together a CD of multiple versions of "Stairway to Heaven".

I would also buy a CD of the various recordings made of "The September Song".

I used to do mix CDs, back in the old days, of carols for my Sunday school class and for friends. Each year, I would choose a different carol and include five or so different versions of it interspersed with others. The one that people still talk about it the Silent Night year, which may have been the first. It had the cast of 42nd Street doing a tap dance version with a really scorching jazz band as well as an a cappella version sung by Karen Akers and Andrea Marcovicci, which remains a personal favorite.

Will do.

Spent most of the morning proofing the Create Space galley - already knew we had to completely redo the cover/back cover/spine thing.  This time I really went through it carefully - most of what I fixed were a couple of spacing issues that remained, and several hyphens that should have been em dashes - got all those fixed.  I found two wrong lyrics (stuff we'd corrected in rehearsal, but I'd never fixed them in the script) so that was good - a few commas gone, and that was really about it.  It looks very good and is ninety pages long, as opposed to the fifty-something pages of what I typed originally (very wide margins, which all got much smaller in the 6x9 format.  Doug sent me the corrected PDF with both covers and spine.  Once I'd finished all that, I re-uploaded it all and now they'll send a new proof.  If that's fine, which I'm hoping it will be, then I think it will be available pretty quickly - I've set the pricing, where it will be sold (except for Kindle, which I'll do later), what my royalties are, etc.  So, all that has to happen now is I approve it and I'll order copies.

I began cooking at noon, and that took about forty minutes, and the sauce is simmering.  I'm not sure I'm feeling the Wacky Noodles vibe today.  It's just so hard do cook six pounds of spaghetti and also try to make the Wacky Noodles, which you can't really do too far in advance.

I went to acupuncture today--it's usually on Friday. I knew that street parking would either be very easy today or horrible. Easy! Ooops. I forgot that today is Thursday, not Friday, and neglected to check the parking signs. That resulted in a $73 parking ticket. Ouch! The City of Los Angeles is now on my Christmas list, I guess. I'd rather give the money to someone else.

Around seven years, David Burnham asked me to write this chart for a holiday concert he was doing. I have no memory now of how he found me or where the concert was, but I really enjoyed working with him.  This sound clip is from a concert about three years ago.

Do you guys get a day off for Boxing Day or is that not a holiday?

Boxing Day is not a holiday here in the USA.  We at the library get the day off because our union-equivalent years ago negotiated to get the day off.  My sister works for the state and is working today.  They don't get the day off.  The library where I work is not a state agency.  We're our own special county taxing district, so we're quite independent in that respect.

Boxing Day is a huge holiday here. Best shopping day of the year!

Yes, a screwdriver. :)

Did you drink it?

No, it's actually a pretty cool screwdriver called the Bit 369 (https://www.buybit360.com/).  Watch the video to see how it works.  I'm really going to be able to use this!

I think that should be Bit 360.

Whatever are you talking about?? ::)

And stays away from the fresh fruit, fresh green salad And the salmon..... No one Can accuse me of eating healthy foods on a holiday

I briefly  considered going to the 10:45 service which us spectacular.... We have the full choirs, the brass choir, the string choir and the bell choir all performing  pews are all fitted with candles and here are candles sconces on the walls and the parishioners are all given candles and the final hymn is Silent night.  The lights are turned off the pastors light the aisle candles and sones and light the candles of the people sitting on the aisle  seats. Who in turn light the candle of the person next to them until by the end of the hymn the church us again enblazoned by the lights of hundreds of candles   The church is always packed for that service.... 300 +.  Not a seat to be had if you are tardy

Do is Done and was faboo save for the little smoke problem that plagued us in the den right from the beginning - I always light a fire in that fireplace, but haven't done it since last Christmas and my guess is that there are some branches or foliage blocking the top of the chimney and so the smoke mostly stayed in the room.  We opened the door and it was bearable for the first hour, then we all moved to other parts of the house.  Must write some notes now.
