Well, you've read the notes, you've gleaned their informative information, and now you are ready to post until the packed-to-the-gills cows come home.

And a very happy birthday to ludlow29 (Michael Colby) who, in days of old, has been known to drop in and say hey.

Good Morning!

-And a very early morning at that...  -Yes, I'm still up...

???

BK -  As I've discovered with Restoration Hardware and other stores/catalogs, it is usually worth the travel time and effort to go to the store in person, catalog in hand, and ask them if they have the item in stock.  Of course, they will say, "Sir, that item is available only through the catalog only."  Then you feign ignorance, and say, "Oh, I didn't realize that."  But then continue by asking, "Would it be possible to place the order here at the store?"  And, hopefully - and usually - they will say, "Yes, you may do so if you'd like."  And, then hopefullly - and usually - they will say, "It should be here with our next shipment from the main warehouse."  -Instead of eight weeks, the wait time is usually 2 weeks.  And, best of all, since it's being shipped to the store, most of the time the S&H fees are waived.  -Of course, this assumes that you will pick up the item yourself once it comes in to the store...

Eddie Bauer's various divisions, clothing and home, offer this "service", and I've even been able to order some specialty stuff from Williams-Sonoma this way too.  It's worth a try if there's a Restoration Hardware store near your abode.  -Or near your adobe if you happen to live in such a structure.

Now, if you happen to have a Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel or the very newish Williams-Sonoma Home near you, you can probably find very similar items at those stores.   Of course, there's also Macy's and the like too.

*As I've also found out, a bunch of those "catalog only" items are not "store exclusives", and can usually be found elsewhere, so...  They're just made by some third party company, and they happen to fit the product profile of the particular store(s).  The company/store puts them in their catalog, but doesn't necessarily keep them on stock, in hand.  When a customer orders said item(s), they contact the third party company.. and eight weeks later you have your area rug.

Good Morning!

-Again, and, Yes, it's still a very early morning...

Houston Food Report...

Tonight, after the show, I met up with some folks at a local place called Katz's Delicatessen.  It's not related to any other Katz's, it's a Houston institution.  It's a deli with a very wide-ranging menu.  It's open 24 hours.  It has various posters and prints on the walls - and each poster and print has a tag with the title of the poster/print and a price should a patron wish to buy said poster/print.  The sandwiches come in either "Regular" or "New York" size.  -And they have fried pickles too!  And part of their "catch" is that whenever there's a "kuh" sound in a word that is spelled with a "c", they spell the word with a "k".  Konsequently, their motto is "Katz's - We Never Klose."  Etc., etc., etc...

This was my first time at Katz's - and probably not my last.  Tonight, I just had a post-show dessert, something called a "Chocolate Eruption".  Basically, just one of those throw-anything-and-everything-that-has-chocolate-in-it-into-a-pie-pan concoctions.  Pretty good.  This particular dessert even had small chunks of white chocolate cheesecake dotting it's landscape.  However...

One item on the menu that particularly caught my eye - and which someone at the table ordered - was the Cheesecake Milkshake.

And just what is a Cheesecake Milkshake, you may ask?  Well, I'll tell you.  You can get a Cheesecake Milkshake in either Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry flavors.  What they do is that they start with a classic Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry Milkshake (ice cream and milk), and then they proceed to blend a slice(!) of cheesecake(!!!) into it!!!!

I was actually afraid of it.  Intrigued, but afraid.  I had a small spoonful of the Chocolate one that was ordered... WOW!!!  It was like lickings the beaters after making a cheesecake batter.  -And it even comes topped with a chunk of graham cracker crust!

-Only in Texas...

Tonight's/last night's show went very well.  However, it was cell-phone city in the audience.  And, of course, they went off during the two quietest scenes in the show: Sheila's intro into "At the Ballet", and Paul's monologue.  UGH!  The first cell-phone just kept ringing and ringing.  And it was one of those rings that gets louder as rings, so...  I hope that person got lots of very dirty looks.

*I found out from a local that if someone's cell phone goes off while attending a production at the Houston Grand Opera, the management kindly but firmly asks the patron to leave the theatre.  GOOD POLICY!!!

OH!  And I had no keyboard trauma tonight.  AND I also found the source of said keyboard trauma - which happened to be a sometimes sticking, sometime non-functioning low-A (the A3 to be exact on this particular Kurzweil model).  -And if any of you know the opening section of the Opening of A Chorus Line, you know that low-A's are prominently featured therein.

As for the source of the problem... While we were setting up before the show, one of the stage hands was talking with the percussionist about something that happened during the previous production of Hair.  On the last night of the show, the stage crew decided to dump the rest of the "show snow" onto to the bandstand area - and, consequently, onto the band members and their instruments.  It was a blizzard from all accounts.  Well...

I had been finding bits of stuff every now and then in between the keys.  I just figured it was debris from the set being built, stage dust, etc.  But after hearing this story, I realized it was "stage snow".  This type of stage snow is made up of shredded plastic - not paper, not cornflakes, etc. - but plastic, little bits of plastic.  So, I started digging in and around the keys and found some more "snow".  Ding-Ding!  Problem found.  Problem solved - well... not really.  At least we know what the cause was/is.  I pulled out a few good shreds here and there before the show.  I'm guessing that if they get the keyboards in the shop for a cleaning, they should be in perfect working order again.  *And after my discovery, I went key by key, and I could tell that there is definitely something stuck under some of the keys.

But, again, I had no keyboard trauma tonight, and had a pretty decent show.  Still a workout, but a good show.

DR SwishySarah - So, does this mean the two staff dramaturgs at Arena will be using your information/presentation for their Show Guides?  ;)

-Maybe you could go ahead and contact the offices at Arena, and see if you could get access to their research materials - which are usually compiled months in advance. ;)

...And I noticed the other night in the "Marquee Hallway" in the theatre, that Juliana Hansen's signature is right across the Millie's dress.  :D -I guess she went on as Millie when the show played Houston.

-Did that make sense?

-Oh, and to catch up from yesterday...

Halloween comes and goes with me.  It all depends what I'm doing at the time, and who I am surrounded by.  A few years ago, I was on the road, and the company had a very nice Halloween party at the hotel we happened to be staying at at the time.  They even made sure to secure a large suite so that everyone could fit into one place.  I had a blast.  The bar downstairs had karaoke, and almost everyone dressed up in costume.  -I went as "Imelda in Exile".  -Hmm.. maybe I'll finally make one or two of those pics public this weekend. ::)

And during the weeks proceeding Halloween, we had a "Secret Satan" gift exchange.  That was a lot of fun!  And the ways that people - including myself - found to plant and hide gifts on a tour bus full of people were astounding and cunningly clever!  Sometimes I - or someone else - would turn around to talk to someone, and then once we turned back around again, there would be a surprise for us on our seat.  :)

Other times, Halloween is just another day, but I do get a kick out of handing out candy to the kiddies.  Also, my brother Mike was born on October 31st, so it's also a family day for me (and my family).  Needless to say, he always had great birthday parties when we were growing up.  Who wouldn't with the sugar quotient practically doubled from all the Halloween candy in addition to the cake and ice cream?  (usually a Carvel Ice Cream Cake!)

And just to make it a nice round 10 in a row...

Media Check - Nothing... As usual...

I did bring a couple of CDs with me to Houston to listen to, but just haven't gotten around to them.  Additionally, the public radio/classical music station here has some great programming, so...  Someday...

-Well, I think that's enough for now... Must still be the residual full moon/lunar eclipse effects... Or maybe it was the "Chocolate Eruption" I had earlier... I really should try to get to bed, get some sleep...  Goodnight.

Laters...

Hello from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam! I'm waiting for my flight to Budapest. Had a too, too marvelous First Class flight upstairs in a 747. How did that happen, you may ask. Well, I had the seatmates from hell in my economy seat. And the drunker they got, the more hellish it got (drinks are free on KLM). Finally, when the "gentleman" beside me dropped his knapsack on my head and called me a bitch - I called it a day. I told the stewardess (who was mortified) that I was moving immediately and that I needed an aisle seat as I was claustrophobic (true). The only aisle seats left were upstairs in heavenly First/Business class. And boy it was nice! Reclining seats, movies on my private screen - whatever I wanted for breakfast - huge space - even a little porcelain dutch house as a going away present. So far, so good. Next stop Budapest. BTW - KLM is a wonderful airline - drunken American idiots not withstanding.

Good morning, al!  Today's a busy day:  down to the recording project office to finish up TAN MANHATTAN and see where BABES IN TOYLAND is standing, then I've got the conductor for the PSClassics JUBILEE coming by to look at the orchestrations.  At some point during all of this, I need to do laundry.

DRSWW, I have seen Kurt Weill's LOVE LIFE; it was done by the University of Michigan's musical theatre program around 10 years ago; there was also an aborted recording attempt, of which I can say no more.

DRTomovoz, beautiful photos!  Are you going to post one of you, Colin, or Francois?

Nurse Jane, I went right to bed after my last Oscar Wilde post!  I slept great, and I'm sure it was all that good food.

TOD:
DVD:  I've got 3 Netflix movies here as well as some Edna Mae Olivers from DRMBarnum, so I've a plethora of riches here.
CD:  I've had IL TROVATORE wth Price and Milnes staring at me for days
HAINES HIS WAY is always in my player
BABES IN TOYLAND and Kern's HAVE A HEART
       a couple of compilation discs
VCR: I have to tape the first three Bravo MANHUNT tomorrow to send to a friend; I've never seen so many moronic and vain young men in one program before.  It's like a casting session for the WB!

Good mornng all... up early fretting over the fact I don't have a clarinet player for the sitz-probe for "The Secret Garden" this eve.  It's my own fault, the musician had a conflict this eve, I thought it would be ok, but now I'm thinking it won't be.  So, I've left some email's with stand-by people, we'll see if that helps, if not, oh well.

Thanks for the good reading this morning, Jose

All you lucky enough to travel is making me less wanting to go to work today.  I could travel; I could stay in my cozy library and read.  I finally have some bookcases (after having my boods in storage for 7 years), so it has been like Christmas rediscovering everything.
I have all the Kritzer books together in one shelf-- handy at eye0level and have saved room for many more books from the same author.
AND Bruce, if you  really like the rug better than all the others you've seen, then it's worth the wait.

Jose---I'm trying to figure out your personal quote-- the source and the meaning--- most intiriguing.
I'd be afraid of a cheesecake milkshake too.   I like either one of them alone-- but not together.

CD's:  I'm listening to some I made for a friend.  I forgot what I had put on them, but apparently I liked the Davis/Shawn/Patrick Cassidy version of "You Could Drive A person Crazy," Liz Callaway doing "Where Do I Go From Here?," and Lindsay Hamilton doing "In the Still of the Night" since they seem to be included on three of the CD's.  I need to think about this.   Some meaning, perhaps?  Or is a cigar sometimes just  a cigar?

CD player: JERRY HERMAN'S BROADWAY. (Don Pippin conducting the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra.) I'm doing some work that doesn't require concentration - and this disc provides the right kind of background music.

VCR: Tonight I hope to watch THE CATERED AFFAIR. My well-meaning sister always gets carried away with plans - turning the simple into the complicated - reminding me of this movie, which I had seen ages ago. So my brother brought me the video when he visited last week.

DVD - The Tom and Jerry collection - 40 cartoons plus extras; they are fun and hold up, but are starting to be a little similar.  They really weren't meant to be watched in a marathon,

CD - Selections from LA TRAVIATA which I see Saturday night at City Opera; the OBC of SHE LOVES me which I see Sunday at Papermill (with the perfectly ast Nancy Anderson as Amelia)

Sorry I missed sending travel wishes to DRPanni.  Glad you arrived safely - I love the pictures.  Also DRTomovoz's photos of France.

Media report:

CD - In the car on the way to work and, now, in my computer while I work:  Songs from Ragtime - concept CD that DRelmore encouraged me to purchase earlier this month in NYC.  Yes, Larry, I like it a lot; it sounds better in my ears than it did in the car!

DVD - Sex and the City, Season 1, Disc 1.  Not having HBO, I've been out of that loop.  Elmore and both other friends with whom I spent time in NYC made reference to the series, so my dear husband (Elmore's junior/senior high and college classmate) is supplying the discs via Netflix.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....the expression was first "stuffed to the gills" meaning that you could eat no more....the gills of a fish being about where the neck of a person was.

So I would guess that "packed to the gills" would mean something like "up to your neck" in it....which is higher than usual!

Panni and Tomovoz you both have shown some wonderful pictures!!  Please keep 'em comin'!

In my VCR:  nothing.

In the pile to be played on my DVD player:  "That's Entertainment" (4-DVD set); Disney's "Home on the Range" and the new 2-DVD release of "Aladdin"

In my CD player:  I'll have to check when I get to work.  I have a pile there, but I forget what all I have.

On my record player to be recorded to CD:  "Porgy and Bess" with Cleo Laine and Ray Charles, the Book-of-the-Month Records' "P.D.Q. Back Strikes Back" compilation and a several album compilation set of Louis Armstrong.  I said that I'd record these for some people I know and I MUST do them this weekend.  I also have the BOTMR's "Songs of New York" that I won on eBay last year that has songs orchestrated by our very own Elmore!!  I must say that Ron Raines looks VERY different than he does now...unless they accidentally switched pictures.  Here's a more recent head shot:

Dear Jose: I learned (from the last time der B and I were in Texas) that Texas is cell phone central.  It was impossible to look in any direction without spotting at least two people with a hand each held to their ears.  This was even true during every trip to the men's room, while facing the wall and...well, let's just say that it was disturbing.  I ended up concluding that all these people had an ear infection of some sort.  I've yet to be convinced otherwise.

Car CD player: a trio of Disney discs, featuring twenty songs each from the animated films.  This was principally due to der Brucer's younger grandlad insisting that the music we were playing wasn't "cool."  When we asked him what was "cool," he mentioned the score to Tarzan.  Der B took the hint, and bought the set.

Only problem was, yesterday (while heading with said grandlad in the back seat to do some shopping) I was playing one of the CDs, and the grandlad complained that the music wasn't good.  So I tried a different track, and played a song from Tarzan.  THAT he liked.

Lesson learned.  Disney isn't cool.  And I doubt that Phil Collins is cool.  But Tarzan IS cool.

That the grandlad is just four years old helps to keep all this in perspective.

DVD players: Der Brucer has been playing things like Van Helsing and The Day After Tomorrow, and rolling his eyes at how bad they are.  I'm sticking with the classics, the Emma Peel episodes of The Avengers.  I'm beginning to want a cat-suit of my own.

BK, Restoration has stores all over the place locally.  I think at the Fashion Sq. right there in Sherman Oaks on Woodman & Riverside, is it?  Can't you just go there and buy the rug?  Anyway, eight days is well before your Christmas Eve Party.

In the CD:  Dusty Springfield in Memphis. Doesn't get much better than Dusty singing, "Just A Little Lovin' Early in the Morning".

DVD:  More Keen Eddies; the second edition of SCTV.

Speaking of the younger grandlad...

Maybe the musically trained in this crew can help with a few problems.  The grandlad has shown an interest in guitars.  We were in a music store at one point, and he knew that the strings are to be strummed, not slapped.  He's also told his mother that he would like to have a guitar.

His mother isn't so sure, of course.  She doesn't want to spend a lot of money on an instrument.  So I suggested that she look for a Baritone Ukelele instead.  My sister learned to play one before she got her first guitar, so I know that the strings are tuned the same as the top four strings of a guitar, and that the fingering is essentially the same (minus the bottom two strings).  It's basically a guitar junior.  And mother agrees that this would be a great idea (if we can find one at a really low price).

Der Brucer is insisting that what I've discribed is not a Baritone Ukelele, but a Tenor Guitar.  Ukeleles are played in a different manner, his logic tells him.

So, problem number one is: What instrument are we looking for?  Do we want a Baritone Ukelele, a Tenor Guitar, or are they in fact the same thing?

Second: What price range should we expect to pay?  I'm thinking for both "really cheap" and for something reasonably decent.

Third: Is four too young to start learning to play an instrument?

Thanks in advance.

Pogue, you mis-read: It would be eight weeks from the time I place my order - in other words the beginning of January, due to the holidays.  I bought my two recent lamps at the Restoration Hardware store in Sherman Oaks.  The stores, unfortunately, don't carry the rugs, but I may take dear reader Jose's advice and try to order through the store directly.

BK:  More photos, please, as you get your new abode into the shape you want.
My hunch is the new abode is already in the shape it will be in, unless BK is planning on knocking down a few walls.  But what he does within that shape would make for some good pics.

And Panni, the pics you've posted look great!  Please post more!  More!  MORE!

Expo has a lovely selection of rugs, often at good price.  There's one in Westwood, I believe, in the old Bullock's building.

Ikea carries reasonably priced rugs, too, though a lot of their selection consists of not very attractive machine-made polyester rugs.  They do have some nice hand-made wool ones, though, last time I checked.

Oh, what a feast for the eyes hhw has been these last few days!  I have been delighting in Tomovoz's gorgeous photos of France--only hoping he will eventually post one of DR François and perhaps some of his very self and Colin in exotic settings!

And rather a lot of fun to follow DR Panni's travels today, from LA all the way to Buda or Pest, whichever one she is in, and to see the pix of her and DD.  Vicarious fun for me here at the office indeed.

CD Player at the Office:  I am listening to Doug Cohen's musical No Way to Treat a Lady.  But it is not, I repeat, not the Original York Theatre Production produced by our very own BK.  It is rather the original Italian production, retitled Serial Killer per Signora.  The CD has 30 tracks, one minute and eighteen seconds, much of the dialogue.  I can't understand much of it at all, of course, but the performers are delightful.  Right now, I'm listening to "Quella Bellissima Gente", i.e. "One of the Beautiful People".

And that is just one of the CD's I have recently acquired in my semi-annual buying orgy.  Some others that have just arrived:

Sail Away, OLC.  Well, this was reissued by the Record Company That Dare Not Speak Its Name--or even take orders on its website.  I don't have the OBC, and this recording is not quite what I expected.  No overture.  Stritch doesn't sing the title song, and there is no "Little Ones' ABC's".  But it does have an added song "Brookville Darby and Joan", pure Coward, an apparently idyllic elderly couple explaining that, despite appearances, they actually loath one another.  And it is great to have La Stritch singing "Why Do the Wrong People Travel?"

Little Me, the Martin Short/Faith Prince revival produced by our very own BK.  This one totally delights me (despite the cutting of the one song in all musical comedy that mentions Esperanto).  Thank you, thank you, thank you Mr. BK for including so much of the dialogue.  It's like being at the show.

And I have a whole box from Footlight to go through!  I feel so good, I could dance the old yahoo step!  (Oh, a Carol Channing reference!)

And here is what remains in that box from Footlight:

The Anastasia Affair produced by our very own BK and our very own Nick Redman, on the Bay Cities label.  Some of those are still obtainable!

An Evening with Johnny Mercer and Margaret Whiting, the wife of Mr. relgnarW kcaJ, of whom there has been some discussion here in times past.

Anyone Can Whistle OBC.  Strange that I never owned that until now.

Other classics:  Bloomer Girl, Dames at Sea, Do Re Mi, Henry Sweet Henry, Scrooge, St. Louis Woman, The Goodbye Girl, Orpheus in the Underworld.

Lorelei  I have the vinyl album, but a lot of songs are missing, and the CD includes several additional ones, including "Men", the song Channing sang on the Tonys broadcast.

Also Debbie Does Dallas, a French Irma la Douce, 2002 revival, a couple of Flanders and Swann albums, La Strada.

Is it a sin to buy so many CDs at once?  Well, I have another box or two coming from Amazon, too.  So I guess I'm going to Musical Theatre Hell.

Good Afternoon!

Well, I got about five hours of sleep between the hours of 5:00am-ish and 11:00am-ish... And, yes, I know that's a span of six hours...  I suspect I'll be taking a nap this afternoon before heading into tonight's show.

After making a run to the post office earlier, I headed over to the Avalon Diner, another classic Houston Institution.  A true diner.  Formica counter, formica tabletops, waitresses that have been there since the 50's - and who know the names of all the regulars!, classic diner fare, etc.  -And in a nod to today's diet crazes, they even asterisk* which items on the menu are Atkin's Friendly.

I opted for Chicken & Dumplings.  Yum!  And I even got three vegetable sides with it too!  Zucchini & Tomatoes, Buttered Carrots, and Turnip Greens.  Yum!  I almost got a shake to go and/or a slice of the very scrumptious looking Coconut Cream Pie, but healthier heads prevailed.  Besides, I was already full by the time I was just halfway through my lunch.  Very generous portions.

-They are open until 5:00, so if I wake up in time from my nap...

Jose---I'm trying to figure out your personal quote-- the source and the meaning--- most intiriguing.
I'd be afraid of a cheesecake milkshake too.   I like either one of them alone-- but not together.

I used to know the true source and author of the quote, but those facts escape me right now.  I think I first heard the phrase in an interview with Tom Cruise of all people - maybe on Oprah and/or his The Actor's Studio appearance.

It intrigues me too.  And it goes along with my other favorite Luck quote which is attributed to Sir Michael Redgrave - who spoke the words to his daughter Lynn - "Make Your Own Luck."

I realized I have not posted today as yet.......

So again, thanks for the well wishes upon my ascendency.  (Insert wrist-swivel "regal" wave here)

Media Check:
DVD:  Nothing, though we did purchase the PBS Broadway documentary, and I am looking forward to all the extras.
VCR:  I think the DP managed to tape The Apprentice without my technological help for a change.
Car: Still in need of finding out why I can't play my Discman anymore.  (i.e.: Is it the Discman itself, or the contraption that plugs into the tape deck and allows me to listen to said Discman)
Office:  Actually, a promo CD of a swing band I am thinking of booking for next season.

I am quite glad that DR Panni arrived safe and sound.  And that her driver didn't feel the need for a quick "Pick-me-up" from her neck.

Lovely LR, BK.

Can I just say that today at the office is the first day in months that I didn't feel as if someone was pointing a gun to my head, with finger poised?  I am not sure if I have gotten that far ahead (which I always endeavor to do), or that they (the gunpointers) are all worrying about their own issues, or that I am forgetting some major project that I should be doing....

Oh, I forgot:  In my CD player at work:  the National Youth Music Theatre production cast recording of Bugsy Malone.  I just got the movie soundtrack from England a couple of weeks ago.  That'll be next.

After those will be Nellie McKay (http://www.nelliemckay.net/) (pronounced "mi-KAI").  She's a very good performer and writes all of her own stuff.  And she's only 19 years old!  AND she lived here in Olympia for a year!

Then will be The Manhattan Transfer's brand new CD Vibrate (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002VEXAU/qid=1099082885/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/002-8186576-8171234).  The opinions on TMT's newsgroup are varied (some love it, some like it and quite a few don't like it at all).  I really like it.  I don't love it...yet, but I think I eventually will.  I always do. :)

Meanwhile, back at the farm!

(www.playbill.com by Andrew Gans)
Julie Andrews to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award
The Hollywood union publicists have chosen Academy Award winner Julie Andrews to receive their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Variety reports that Andrews was tapped for the honor for her career in film, television and theatre. The beloved actress, who recently hosted PBS' "Broadway: The American Musical" series, will be presented with the award Feb. 22, 2005, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The awards presentation is part of the International Cinematographers Guild's 42nd annual Publicists Awards Luncheon.

Henry Bollinger, the chairman of the awards committee, told the industry paper, "Few performers have achieved her level of success in one of these fields much less in all three. What's more, she appreciates more than most the importance of promoting the projects in which she appears."

Julie Andrews — who was born in Surrey, England — starred on Broadway in the original productions of The Boyfriend, My Fair Lady and Camelot, the stage version of Victor/Victoria, and in the Off Broadway Stephen Sondheim revue, Putting It Together. She won an Academy Award for her work in "Mary Poppins" and Oscar nominations for "The Sound of Music" and "Victor/Victoria."

My favorite of the Ikea-carried rugs was the one that looked like a test pattern for Technicolor...all those squares of saturated color....

Yum....

but, in the cd player are the three compiliation discs put out by Verve:  ELLA FITZGERALD:  THE BEST OF THE SONGBOOKS.
in the dvd player:  PBS' BROADWAY, of which I have just watched the two bonus features devoted to WICKED.  At last, I have heard the former Fieryo song which was replaced with "Dancing Through Life."

Evening all!

I marvel at the speed at which the latest technology allows us to share ourselves with each other.  Wonderful, Wonderful pictures by one and all.  More!  Please!!

Oh, I told Tom! Yes, i did!

I said: you'll see! The moment you post a pic of me the posting will stop!
Well, indeedee!

I have a face which can stop a train!

More pics, i say!

Please, don't mind me!

I must have missed that picture, François de Paris.  I've only see the photo of three attractive men whom I am very proud to call friends.  I mean that.    :)

I have to tell you my news.  With the hurricanes and all, I lost most of the four o'clock seeds that I planted.  I've been to upset to even tell you all about that.  Tonight, to my very great surprise, one of them bloomed.  Pure White.  The one I wanted the very most!

I should have grabbed the camera and taken a picture to share but I'm sorry to say I didn't.  I promise to do so tomorrow.

Out of all of the seeds I planted it seems that this is the only one that made it through the storms.

And was it only last night we were talking about magic?

We didn't have muchies at work and no one wore any kind of a costume.  On Tuesday (Election Day), we're going to have a baked potato pot luck for lunch where everyone brings toppings.

I did buy a cap that was like this.  Mine doesn't have the picture of the letter and has a different style of lettering.  Also, on mine the word "Costume" lights up when you push a button!  I couldn't find a picture of it on the Internet, but this is close enough:

Julie has also won an Emmy, a Grammy, and five Golden Globes. Only the Tony eludes her,and if the Tony Governing Board had ANY sense in their collective heads, she'd be granted an honorary award

I truly believe that she would have won the Tony for Victor/Victoria.  I saw both her and Donna Murphy that year.  And while DM was fabulous, seeing Julie Andrews live was a huge thrill.  I mean I was in total awe.  And I really feel like her performance was the best of that season.

Halloween is most certainly not a big deal here. Sometimes kids will get involved - the influence of their grade teachers!! Commerical interests have had no success in promoting Halloween.  We have no equivalent of Thanksgiving  either. Christmas is still the most significant holiday. This Tuesday (Nov 2 -  All Saints Day) is a holiday in this state - "Melbourne Cup Day". The nations stops for this horse race! I think it is the most significant in the Southern Hemisphere. Entrants come from NZ, France, The UK, Ireland and Hong Kong. It is the "Fashion" week for Spring here.

"All Souls Day" is really not significant here either - it is in some parts of France.

Our car fall down, go boom!

We were on a return trip from Georgetown, the county seat...you may have heard of the place, it's where the Disney trial about Ovitz's bonus is taking place...where we would have taken pics of one of the dogs at the SPCA.  This is one wierd branch of that organization: They've set up a kennel/pound, where their hours are Monday-Friday from 10 to 4.  They aren't open on weekends.  It seems that they have dedicated themselves to animal control, and not to animal rescue.

This means that they don't try to place the animals in good homes.  The reason they aren't open on Saturdays these days is because, when they were open, they kept getting people coming in and dropping animals off.  Ohmygawd, that meant they had more animals to take care of!  How horrible!

So instead, they've got the hours they keep to keep those terrible people away (and force them to dump them along the highways, instead).

Several times a month, the Animal Rescue people der Brucer has affiliated himself with get calls to rescue this dog or that, or maybe a half dozen or more.  And it's always at the last minute.  Making things worse, they don't try to provide good pictures of the dogs they DO have, forcing the Rescue people to take pictures through chain link fences.  Think I'm joking?  Take a look at Wolfie (http://www.petfinder.org/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=3562802&adTarget=468doggeneral&SessionID=418303ac58e4706f-app4&display=&preview=0&row=50&tmpl=&stat=) here!  This is a Chihuahua they've got caged up!  The world must be protected from these terrible animals!

Bleh.

Continuing...

On our way back home, as I was saying, der Brucer noticed the dashboard battery light had flashed on.  This was not a good sign.  Nor was the engine temp climbing rapidly.  He turned the air conditioning to high heater, and we lowered the windows; der B was figuring one of the engine belts was in trouble.  Pretty soon, the power steering was failing.

Somehow, we made it to the local Ford dealership in time, before we had an accident.  But the car is in the "hospital" for at least a day, maybe until Monday.

Good thing we've got some extra cash stashed away for this kind of emergency.

Bummer news, though, is that tomorrow is the Yappy Hour fundraiser at Aqua, and we were hoping to take Zeus, to find him a good family.  That might not come off this time.

Double bleh.

In the meanwhile, a box of DVDs arrived in the post.  Half of the box was the That's Entertainment set.  The other half is three films by Tracy and Hepburn: Adam's Rib, Pat and Mike, and Woman of the Year (before Bacall tried to sing it), plus a TV tribute Hepburn made about Tracy.

I've already seen the TE films and Adam's Rib, and I think I remember the tribute (which ended with Hepburn giving a very rambling, tearful "I love you" speech).  But somehow I've missed WotY and P&M.  Time to correct for that.

Well, of course Dame Julie can live eprfectly fine and happy without a Tony. I just happen to think she DESERVES one, especially in view of other less deserving "theater artists" who have been given special ones: Diana Ross, Barry Manilow to name just two.

Overall I think ADAM'S RIB is the best movie they made together, but I think PAT & MIKE is even more fun (and it has the ever-hunkalicious Aldo Ray in it).

I also meant to say that I agree with DR Jennifer about Julie's Tony nomination for VICTOR/VICTORIA. Had she not removed herself from competition, I do think she would have won that year.

I was not being critical of your opinion, Matt, I was just concurring with DiT, I believe, that, after turning down her nomination, the Tony people may have cold feet about celebrating her....

Breaking the Cycle is Gay Themed?

You mean it isn't about terrorists at the Tour de France?

Live and learn, live and learn.

Wait, isn't Dame Julie directing The Boyfriend somewhere very soon?

If they could get a Broadway transfer...

I'm not saying she could win best director, but it would give them an excuse to forget V/V and honor her.

Finally decided what Bollywood movie to watch this weekend...I watched one earlier in the week titled POST BOX 999 which was a pretty entertaining film noir from the 1950s...

By the way, speaking of Dame Julie, apart from Jane who kind of made fun of the costumes she wears in it, I don't recall anyone mentioning Julie's SINGING in the dreadful but fun Princess Diaries 2:

Yes, Julie sings! Briefly, but she SINGS, not à la Rex Harrison; the way she used to, even though it's in a low range, but not basse as she often jokes!
I can tell, it's quite moving!

I don't care what they say about this film, there are not many films for young girls nowadays, and I predict that it's going to sell like hot cakes as dvds!

Voilà!

August 22nd 2004 (The Herald Press by Josh Mrozinski)
Goodspeed Musicals to hit the road with Andrews directing
EAST HADDAM -- Goodspeed Musicals is taking a road not yet traveled in 2005 by initiating a national tour of "The Boy Friend" under the direction of Oscar and Emmy Award-winner Julie Andrews.

The tour, which begins in Wilmington, Del. in fall of 2005, will be directed at the Goodspeed Opera House from July 15 to Sept. 24, 2005.

"Who can imagine a better way for Goodspeed to launch its first national tour than with Julie Andrews directing ‘The Boy Friend?’" Michael P. Price, Goodspeed Musicals executive director, asked in a press release from the theater. "We plan to do this every year in an effort to bring the ‘Goodspeed Experience’ to cities across the country."

Bob Alwine, director of touring and line producer, said the national tour was something Price had always wanted to do. He said Price always wanted to promote the theater’s shows to a national audience.

And, although there is revenue potential, Alwine said, there is also brand name recognition.

He said a lot of people know about the theater, but haven’t seen a show.

"There is a brand name to Goodspeed," Alwine, who was hired in 2002, said.

Alwine previously worked at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego, Calif., and the Ordway Center for Performing Arts in St. Paul, Minn.

He said the theater feels there is a national audience for "The Boy Friend", because it is family oriented and enjoyable.

"What Goodspeed does is rediscover musicals that merit to be played again and we feel that there is a national audience for that type of musical," Alwine said.

The show would be produced at the theater with theater cast, the set would be made larger to fit larger theaters and then there would be rehearsals and a technical phase, Alwine said.

The locations for the tour were chosen in cooperation with a booking agency, he said, to give the theater exposure to the Midwest and northeastern areas. Also, the cities chosen are close enough to go from one city to the next in a short time
"We chose these cities because we would like to work with them in the future," Alwine said.

The tour will also go to Boston, Chicago, Greenville, S.C., Hershey, Pa., East Lansing, Mich., Green Bay, Wis. and St. Paul, Minn.

Andrews performed in the 1954 Broadway debut of "The Boy Friend," which is about an English heiress who falls in love with the delivery boy. The musical is a jazzy spoof of 1920s musical comedies.

She also performed in "My Fair Lady," "Camelot," "Victor/Victoria," "The Sound of Music," and "Mary Poppins." In 1973, Andrews won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Musical Series in her television show "The Julie Andrews Hour."

Her directing career began in August 2003 at the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, N.Y. when she created her own version of "The Boy Friend."

Good evening, cyber family!

My computer finally got healthy, so I decided to get sick, instead.  A simple little cold somehow managed to turn itself into walking pneumonia, which is a stupid name for an ailment that left me wanting to do anything but walk.

But I am all better now -- just in time for rehearsal tomorrow and the murder mystery tomorrow night.

Ahhh, life upon the wicked stage!

I sold concessions at tonight's performance by Scott Cossu and Windham Hill founder Will Ackerman.  First let me say that they are both very talented performers who have a dedicated and loyal following.  The audience loved them.

I, however, while recognizing and acknowledging their talent, have to admit that their style of music...bores me.  Purly instrumental music has that effect anyway, but individually all of their music sounds the same...to me.  Same style, same feel, same effect.  Big ol' yawn.

Now, if you ask yourself why would I sign up to usher/work concessions for a show that I probably knew that I wouldn't enjoy, let me say that I didn't know that I wouldn't enjoy it, but I had an idea that I probably would.  The main reason that I do it is because the ushering/concessions work is actually a lot of fun.  And when working concessions, I get free Diet Pepi!  Not a bad reason, at all. ;D
