TOD:

Back in 1996, Sandy and I spent about two weeks in the UK.

The first few days were in London; saw SUNSET BLVD with Petula Clark and JOLSON, and also did the Jack the Ripper walking tour.  Then, we took a 10 day bus tour up to Scotland and back.  The highlight of that tour wal Edinburgh Castle.

SNOW!

Okay, only a quarter of an inch, thank the gods, and we just leaf-blew it again.

But what a rude awakening.  Especially since no one had forecast it.  Damn it to HELL, I demand that every quarter of an inch be forecast.

You know that package that got here in one day?  I checked where it was mailed from.  The town is about forty minutes from here.  For some reason I'd thought the seller was at least a few states away.

Disc 2 tonight!   :)

TOD

I left my job in December 1979 to join my friends for a Mexican/Caribbean cruise on their sailboat.  I returned in April 1980 (and went back to the same job).  But there were a few people crewing at any one time, and the boat and its owners were out for a couple of years in all.

Good lord, life was carefree then.

Good morning, all!

Lots of dreams last night. I remember fragments this morning:
  1. My brother Macbeth and I sharing a bedroom as kids
  2. One long convoluted one with ladies in late 19th century dresses and a search for someone with a strange name like Oren Rasmussen (that wasn't the name; I no longer remember it)
  3. Something about traveling

Prostitution ring? I thought my Manhattan past was sensational, but the West Coast is leaving me in the dust.  Some day I'll post about my 1981 roommate who worked for as a banker and moonlighted for an escort service.  He was the favorite escort of a Brink's armed truck robber who stayed at the Plaza where the cocaine was an inch deep in the carpet and spent a lot of the stolen loot on producing a porn film.

I keep forgetting that I haven't put the snow tires on the car.  I don't think I've ever waited till January to do that.  What was it, 2009 that we had weather like this?  That time I regretted having done it early and putting unnecessary wear on them.  I guess I'm making up for that now.  It's time for an oil change, so I'll get the tires done, too.

Yes, BK, you are Annie. I think taking on the role would stretch your acting abilities and it would be fun to boot. Besides, we need some more cross-gender, cross-generational casting.

You'd be more convincing than Diana Ross in the Wiz.

TOD:
There were three trips for about two weeks apiece. Each was too short.

Ireland which was magical that February. It snowed for four hours and rained for two, but the rest of the time, it was clear and so richly green. The trip started out with a dance competition in Tralee and we crossed the southern part of the country and through the culinary capital, Kinsale, before ending up for a few days in a tiny town called Bunclody and then moving on to Dublin.

I also spent a couple of weeks in Brazil during Carnaval with time in both Rio and in the southern area around Florianopolis. Just gorgeous countryside and some of the most wonderful, gracious people on the planet.

And I spent a couple of weeks on Spain's Costa del Sol in a trip that included tours of the Alhambra as well as day trip to Morocco and Gibraltar. I remember some incredible food on that trip, including tocino del cielo, a flan-like dish that translates as heavenly bacon.

The longest vacation I ever took was 10 days and I believe I've taken a few 10-day vacations. They were to go to Europe - primarily England, Germany and Scottland. We always had a very good time. What really stands out is a trip to Liverpool where Mark booked a private Beatles tour for us, which was very fun and interesting.

TOD - Summer, 1996.  We took the first of 3 family driving vacations that were a huge part of Rob's growing up.  We were away for 3 and a half weeks making a huge loop across Iowa, South Dakota (for Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands), and Wyoming (Yellowstone).  We then went south through Utah to Las Vegas and then across to Los Angeles for Disneyland and Universal.  From LA we went to Phoenix, picked up Mom, and drove back via the Painted Desert, Albuquerque, the Texas panhandle, Oklahoma, and St. Louis.  Mostly on the return trip, we just drove during the day and watched the Atlanta Olympics in the evenings.

Then in 1999 we went east for about 3 weeks and did Civil War battlefields, Washington DC,  and a week in Ocean Grove, NJ that included 2 day trips into NYC, first to see The Lion King and second to visit the Statue of Liberty.  In 2001, we went west again, primarily to Colorado, but visited the Truman presidential library on the way out and the Eisenhower on the way back.  In CO, we went to Rocky Mountain National Park, Denver, and Colorado Springs.  Toured Celestial Seasonings (tea), Coors (beer), the Air Force Academy, and the Figure Skating Hall of Fame (Richard's and Rob's favorite - NOT).

I agree...just not as strongly. ;) I agree that if she had a problem that she needed to keep track of, she shouldn't have stayed there.  The house managers would've been very understanding.  I wasn't able to leave my area, otherwise I probably would have gone to one of the house managers.  I am going to sent an e-mail to the volunteer coordinator.

Topic of the Day:  the two longest trips that I can remember taking (I don't know about trips when I was a kid) were each 10 days or so.  I went to NYC in December of 1995 (exactly 20 years ago last month!), and London in December of 2001 (just three months after 9/11).  We saw shows, walked around, ate, bought stuff, a lot of touristy stuff.  I'd love to go back to either place. :)

I liked Brian Bedford in that movie very much....a very strange Ross Hunter production...I even liked the girl in the movie....Julie Sommars.....

I was always resistant to the idea of Lady Bracknell played by a man; to me, Dame Edith Evans owns the role still.  That said, Brian Bedford was quite amazing in the last delightful Broadway revival of The Importance of Being Earnest.

Five pages so far.  I'll shower now and get ready for rehearsal.  Jenna has cancelled - she's sick and has no voice.  I may try to cover her two songs, just in case.  As I mentioned, it seemed like every kid was sick the other day.  That's why school should be outlawed.

Seems to me a few serious omissions - no Spielberg in the directing category, which is shameful.  Going Clear not nominated for Best Documentary, but the ordinary doc on Nina Simone is.  Unbelievable.  Actress category is okay, but I'm just over Christian Bale being nominated for anything he does.  He was certainly not exceptional.

And the other big controversy is the complete lack of racial diversity in any of the acting categories.  Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs Addresses Diversity Issue (http://www.eonline.com/news/731352/2016-oscars-academy-president-cheryl-boone-isaacs-addresses-diversity-issue):

I haven't seen many of the films or performances.....but reading MR BK's comments about many of them almost makes me feel that I have.

After I read what he writes....and then see the movie....I almost ALWAYS agree with what he said about it....

I think the lack of diversity is just a fact of the business - you can't get a nomination if the members of your branch don't vote for you....and no matter what the agenda may be - and I think it's more financially motivated than racially or politically motivated - if the votes aren't there....you're a presenter.

Regarding the usher, yes, it's best to report her, IMO. It really isn't fair to the theater patrons, who paid to see the show, or to the performers. It shouldn't fall to the patrons to ask her to behave herself. Is there a head usher or supervisor around in these instances?

If I learn anything more...sometimes there is no other news, except in this case it was a police matter.  In previous terminations (former director and HR manager), the wrong-doings were all internal.

I had just returned home from running errands this afternoon and was pulling into my parking space when my dashboard said there was a problem with one of the tires. Ugh! I called the garage, yes, they could take care of it today, so back out I went. All is well now--or so I'm told. The tires look fine. I suspect the problem was actually that the tire indicator light hadn't gone off from two weeks ago when the tire was repaired, but I have no free time tomorrow and didn't want any problems.

I didn't see any list of films or actors in that article, just the usual horse pucky.  There's no deep plot to shut out people of different color or race, sorry.  The Oscars nominations and wins are based on votes.  No one has to agree with them, but it's not about anything other than the voters voted for what they thought was best.  Was there a snub to Straight Outta Compton?  I liked it, but I thought there were many other films that were better, and certainly there were no performances in it that I would have voted for.  When an actor of color turns in a great performance, sorry, they're nominated and sometimes they win.

Sunday, January 31 is apparently the busy matinee for our show.  It currently looks like it is about 2/3 of the house.  The biggest problem with Tacoma Little Theatre is that it is all street parking only.  I would suggest being at the theater between 1:15 and 1:30.  The tickets are in my name at Will Call.  There might be a line inside to pick up tickets, but it moves fast.
