Today will be a long day. Music is coming in and we must be finished tomorrow so Joshie has Thursday to do fixes, print scores and orchestra parts, and tape the orchestra parts for Friday's band rehearsal before the sitzprobe. I can't believe the show opens next Wednesday.

Absolutely no memory of what my mother fed me.

However, for breakfast, my grandmother, often fixed diced ham scrambled with eggs.  We called it "Cut 'n Up".

Yes, DR VIXMOM, I think our friend at the funeral home notified Social Security as well.  The $255 death benefit will be added to your mother's check automatically.

IF your father had already received his SS check for last month, it will be taken back.  They do NOT pay a benefit for the death month.  This was surprising to me because SS was always held back a month anyway.....but they do it.  So her first check will be her new benefit plus the $255 minus his last month's check....  You will get a letter explaining it.

Watched the final GALAVANT last night.

It's silly, but fun.  Love the songs.

They left an opening for a 3rd season, but I doubt if there will be one.  Hopefully, there will be a DVD of Season 1 & 2 soon.

Not a lot of FUN.....but very well done.

TOD

Easy to answer, as I've always remembered these as my absolute favorites:

Meatloaf
Macaroni and Cheese
Pot Roast

The first two were frequent supper favorites.  The latter was more of an occasional Sunday dinner type of thing.  And here, I'm using the terms supper and dinner as my family did.

Now I am planning meat loaf and mac and cheese on Friday!!
Title: Re: THE CAPTIVATING DAY
Post by: ChasSmith on February 02, 2016, 06:58:11 AM
My mom was a fairly simple cook.  Betty Crocker type of recipes.  But she did a couple of things to the above that I always found extra delicious.
Title: Re: THE CAPTIVATING DAY
Post by: Jrand74 on February 02, 2016, 06:59:32 AM
My mom used regular saltine crackers in the meatloaf, but now and then she used Ritz crackers which made it even better.

And sometimes instead of mashed potatoes, she would roast potatoes in the pan with the meatloaf which was good, too.

Good morning.

TOD: meatloaf, roast beef, sauerbraten with gingersnap gravy, and "club sandwiches," which was really just leftover chicken with fixin's, but she put it on the lazy susan, so you could spin it around to choose your favorite fixin's.

Oh -- and turkey and dressing. She made the BEST cornbread dressing.

Post by: ChasSmith on February 02, 2016, 08:59:05 AM
Okay, I have a minute, so here's mine:

Dad's mother - Fried chicken on Sunday, no question.  We had it at home and elsewhere, but the memory goes right to her dinner table.

Mom's mother - Well, it sounds silly to say fried eggs, but I have a few very special memories of times when I was staying overnight with her and she made eggs, the frying and the taste of which are indelibly linked to the total memory of those happy occasions.  What's more, half a century later, every damned time I fry eggs myself, I am making "those" eggs.

I don't know. I haven't really been watching last update was someone else.  They are broadcasting from right outside the Tyson Events Center along I-29.  There's a hotel there and the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel too.  That's a good thing because there are very few restaurants open. There was a bird on my feeder (gave in and put the feeder back up with blizzard was forecast) but no feed in the feeder (think the deer ate it all last night) so I decided to go fill it.  The drift in my driveway is knee deep now and we're no where near the end of the storm.   I'm guessing I won't get out until late Wednesday or Thursday.  They aren't plowing many of the streets as the wind just fills them in again.

TOD:  when I was a kid, my father was on the road two nights a week. To stretch her dinner budget, Mom would make us kids strawberry crepes for dinner. I loved those thin, eggy crepes. I later found out my sister Linda hated that meal.

Favorite dessert: yes. Rhubarb squares, cherry pie, homemade pop tarts (more like what I came to know as empanadas), doughnuts, the occasional cake and always cookies.

Watched the final GALAVANT last night.

It's silly, but fun.  Love the songs.

They left an opening for a 3rd season, but I doubt if there will be one.  Hopefully, there will be a DVD of Season 1 & 2 soon.

I really like Galavant also, but as far as I know, DVDs haven't been released at all for this show.  Maybe they'll do a "complete series" release after it's officially cancelled. :-\

Our grandmothers' cooking --

That IS a good idea, as an addendum to this TOD or perhaps another one.

I never grew up with either of my grandmothers.  One was in California and the other was in Germany.  We did live near each of them for short periods of time when I was very young, but I don't remember anything about what they may have made to eat.

TOD Desserts: We had an overproducing lemon tree, so she made lemon pie quite often in the winter/spring.

Also, grasshopper pie. Anyone remember that?

I had grasshopper pie for my birthday several years in a row when I was younger. Haven't had it in ages.

TOD - My Mom made fabulous chicken and dumplings, always my sister's request for her August birthday even though it's not really "summer" food.  Another frequent dinner in our home was liver and onions with fried potato slices.  Not on everyone's list, I'm sure, and not something I'd ever cook myself.  We rarely had dessert for everyday dinners, but for special occasions, our favorite was Mom's no-bake cheesecake.  I tried to make it once and found out how &%#$ much work it really was!

TOD:
Marinated crab legs. When I was turning 12 years old, I assumed everyone would love this, so I insisted my mom make it for a birthday party I was having with about six girlfriends. My dad tried to warn me that my friends would probably prefer sloppy joes, but I insisted on the crab legs. He was right - my friends ate the crab, but they were less than enthusiastic about
it.

My mom made a lemon bunt cake with chocolate chips in it that we all liked a lot. The problem was the chips tended to sink to the bottom in the batter, so they weren't very evenly spread throughout the cake. They all pretty much ended up in the bottom third of the cake (which became the top when you flipped it over). When my sister got old enough, she was sure she
could do a better job than my mom could of preventing the chips from sinking and she made her own cake. When it came out of the oven, the chips were completely lined up against the edge of the cake — much worse than my mom's. It was pretty amusing.

Got the great news that John Boswell can do the March Kritzerland, then got the bad news that once again they've booked out the room on our date, which means we have to do the show on Tuesday, as we did in December.  It will be our final show there unless we work out an arrangement - if that arrangement is having another night be our show night, but one they cannot cancel, that's fine by me.  I built this show and it has lasted so long based on consistency - you always know where we are and when we are, and that has been totally put into disarray by these creeps.  Sterling is very upset, too, and is beginning to think about looking for a new venue or at least talking to the main guy who brought him there - if he knows what's going on maybe that guy can stop his underlings from doing this crap.  Or just give me Tuesday nights forever with no option of canceling us, or pay for the show - if they're paying for the show, then I don't mind having to do all the work necessary to move the date and I won't care if we sell out or not because it won't impact me at all.

Well, I'm off to see ALW's The Wizard of Oz   I saw the first tour in 2013 and I liked the show very much.  This is the new tour - non-equity I believe- I'm hoping it's as good.  Not that non-equity theatre is not superior to equity theatre, I'm just saying I liked it the first time.  I'm sure the fact the actors are non-equity will have no bearing on the over all production.  It's the production values that suffer with these things.  But it was part of my Broadway San Jose season and I'm looking forward to it!

Tonight I burned a pan of onions and celery I was sauteing to add to the wild rice I was cooking.  I thought I had turned the gas stove off, instead I turned it from low to high.  I rushed the pan outside to cool before the smoke set of the alarm.

When I picked up the dog for his walk I mentioned what I had done.  She said she did the same thing and now looks to make sure the flames are really turned off.

It felt like I had turned it all the way, and it looks like it too.  There should be a more distinctive marking on the off arrow.

Joshua Bell was really good. He performed Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9 and a sonata by Faure'. Then he closed out with the Hungarian Dance from Brahms, the Chopin's Nocturne, and Wieniaski's Scherzo Tarantelle, which was super showy and lots of fun.

I hear he's a real diva off stage, but no matter. After the concert, he gladly signed anything for everyone in the audience and posed for pictures.

Just reported 15 inches of snow on one tv station. Put that with 40 mph winds and that's why the interstates are closed and no travel everywhere.  Cool.  Haven't had a real blizzard in years.

I have two appellate briefs due between now and Monday. One on Friday and one on Monday.  They are a lot of work.  I finished reviewing everything for one of them tonight and did some of the research.  Hopefully I can finish the research and write the one due Friday tomorrow.  That would relieve a lot of my current stress. I am very happy the appeals court has gone electronic. So, I only have to get it all done and can efile it.  That I can even do in a blizzard

My favorite Explorer baseball player signed for next summer.  He's such a cutie, the bluest eyes you've ever seen.  He's my friend on Facebook :)  I'm sure he never looks at my FB but he has given a thumbs up when I post or share a post about him and tag him in the post

15 inches of snow. That just sounds so wrong.

But I'm glad you don't have to be out in it.

I went frame shopping again today. This was optometrist #7. They don't stock the frame I wanted, but they are willing to order it for me. It's a Gucci frame and more than I wanted to pay, but it's the only frame I've found that fits me well. My insurance will cover some of the cost.

In Virginia, I had an optician who was excellent. If she didn't stock something I wanted, she'd ask one of her staff to find something for me. And they did. That level of customer service seems so rare now. I don't understand it. Yes, it takes some of their time, but it's also a sale.

I noticed this morning that the prescription for my progressive didn't include an "add." Without an "add" you can't make a progressive. Oy. I ended up having yet another eye exam. My eyes have been examined every possible way over the past few months. But it was quick and I do like the new optometrist.

Interestingly, his Rx is quite a bit different from the two progressive prescriptions from the surgeon. We won't know how correct it is until we make the glasses. With my new eyes this is supposed to be easy!

But there a lots of folks I've never heard of. Lots of famous movies and shows I've never seen.

And I haven't the faintest clue about pop music or celebrities of the day.

I'm not good for much, actually. You don't want me on your trivia team.

Even if you never answered a single question correctly, I'd still want you on my team!

My mom makes an interesting peach pie. Sometimes I loved it, sometimes I didn't

Even your mother's cooking is funny :)

Well, she doesn't like to cook, so sometimes she has patience with it and it's great and sometimes she doesn't so it's not as great.....

Patience peach pie. I like the sounds of that.

I'll see if I have the recipe, it's actually a really good pie when you don't take it out of the oven before it's done....ie when you have patience

I look forward to reading the recipe.

Nice.

I loved most every other dessert she made.

Cherry pie
Banana cream pie
Lemon meringue pie
Rhubarb pie
Cakes, cookies

When I was in high school, I dated a nice Italian girl.  My mom and her grandmother became good friends.  The grandmother got my mother making pizzelle cookies.  My mom became a hit at cookie exchanges because she would take pizzelle to the parties.  I liked the cookies, but I preferred the batch she would make for me that didn't have anise in them.

Well, it's time for me to leave.  I'm off to "Circle Mirror Transformation."  We'll see if they have the projections fixed or not.

Be back later!

They fixed it!  Everything went quite well tonight.  The music and all the projections worked, and I even figured how to fade the projections in and out, instead of them coming on and off instantly. :)

I have a meeting with one of the library's reps in the morning...so I need to get there an hour before I normally get to work.  I hate it when that happens.
