Title: THE HAIRCUT AND GETTING THE NEW BOOK ON ITS MERRY WAY
Post by: bk on February 13, 2016, 12:34:55 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of the haircut and getting the book on its merry way, and now it is time for you to post until the merry cows come home.

The idea of owning an original David Byrd work of art is pretty cool, but I can't imagine that I could afford it.

Well, it's time for me to go to bed.  I need to go to work today and make up some time from this week, but also because we're losing two days of invoicing next week.

Sometimes when I go to a show or a movie something happens or something is said, and then I feel like Popeye the Sailor and say: "That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more."  And then I leave.

TOD:

I love making different types of macaroni and cheese with whatever ingredients I have on hand, including multiple cheeses, some truffle oil and who knows what all else, and breadcrumbs on top.

I also love making pasta. I've only done it a couple of times, but it's therapeutic emptying your mind and just relaxing while you feed the dough through the pasta maker and letting it come out thinner and thinner with each pass.

That said, I should never eat pasta in this country. It causes my blood sugar to skyrocket. It didn't do that in Italy. I think it's a difference in the wheat used.

I watched Bridge of Spies last night.  I enjoyed reading others' responses to it.

I did enjoy it.  I am not sure about the accuracy of what I was seeing.  I certainly remember reading all about it and hearing about it.  I was probably in the third grade or so.  Of course I didn't realize exactly what it was all about.  But it did concern THE RUSSIANS! And SPIES! And ATOMIC BOMBS! And WAR!  So I knew it was important.

I didn't like the "by the books" writing, where one character or another would always repeat a phrase at different points in the movie in some heavy handed way.  As soon as Abel told that story about the "standing man", I knew that sooner or later he would call Donovan the same thing......

So, I've been very surprised that after a good start on the Indiegogo campaign we just stalled out at 1380 with no movement for almost three days - that's really bad and you need momentum if a campaign is to be successful.  On the first day I'd seen a post from someone on a page where I'd shared the campaign saying he wanted to contribute and had tried but he couldn't get it to work.  I know the person and have for years - he was a teacher at LACC and I staged the musical numbers on a couple of shows for him.  He mentioned the amount he wanted to contribute, too, so I e-mailed him, called him, and PMd him and heard nothing at all.  This morning he called me.  He's in his mid eighties now and a computer luddite, but I talked him through things - it took an entire hour to do it, and there were several points where I just said, "Should I come over and you can give us a check" it finally worked, the contribution finally went through and we are now - you won't believe it - 51% funded - yes, he took the big boy perk perk for $5,000.  Amazing.  Now, please share the campaign because we've got the other 50% to raise and we need every dollar of it for the band and sound packages.

Sometimes when I go to a show or a movie something happens or something is said, and then I feel like Popeye the Sailor and say: "That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more."  And then I leave.

I can understand that.  I can remember only leaving a show (during intermission) once.  I wasn't feeling well and really needed to get home...but otherwise, I've stuck it out seeing some pretty bad theater.  Fortunately, bad theater is a fairly rare occurrence in Olympia anymore.

That said, I should never eat pasta in this country. It causes my blood sugar to skyrocket. It didn't do that in Italy. I think it's a difference in the wheat used.

I was reading something about that recently, but I can't recall where. I do know that there have been a lot of problems attributed to the newer, high-yield wheat. Another reason to choose gluten-free products.

One of the problems with the genetically-modified products is that they add a "foreign" molecule and don't say what it is. If it's something you're allergic to it could mean big trouble. I find this reprehensible. Surely consumers should be informed and able to make their own decision.

I'm in George's camp. I would be interested in the Byrd images, but I doubt I could afford one. I do have a framed limited print of the Follies poster that he signed. It's a small thing, but it means a great deal.

While a lot of work we make two dishes when we have company though we cheat now and use a jarred sauce we buy from Michigan.

The first dish is Eggplant Rolletini:

2 large eggplant peeled and thinly sliced (eggplant=18 thin slices?)
12 oz angel hair pasta (closer to 7.5 oz)
1 jar pesto sauce
2 large eggs beaten
Flour
Canola oil
Shredded mozzarella cheese
Grated asagio or parmesan cheese
2 small cans sliced olives
6-8 cups of your favorite tomato sauce
(we have been using Café Cortina’s Pomodoro Sauce)
Peel and thinly slice eggplant.
Lightly sprinkle both sides with salt and set on paper towels for 30 minutes

Cook angel hair pasta, drain & place in large bowel
Add pesto sauce to taste and mix
Then add grated parmesan and/or adagio cheese to taste

Dredge eggplant in flour
Dip into egg mixture
Sauté till lightly brown
Drain well on paper towels

To Assemble:

Coat bottom of baking dish with tomato sauce

Take one slice of eggplant and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and olive slices.  Now, place a finger-full of pasta at one end and roll up jelly style.  Rolletini should be tight

Place seem side down in the baking dish

Repeat process until all the rolletini have been made

The other dish is Past Siciliano. It has sauteed onions, raisins, pine nuts and diced eggplant which is then added to a tomato cream sauce with parmesan and/or adagio cheese added.  The sauce is then tossed over penne pasta.

Do you have a favorite brand of sauce.  My big problem is I haven't found one I really like, even the ones I ship from Michigan I prefer to use the sauce in cooking something else than eating it plain, or slightly doctored, over pasta.
