Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a show and had a cast, and now it is time for you to post until the show cows come home.

I'm home after seeing a Spike Lee movie that's an updated version of Lysistrata, called "Chi-Raq" (pronounced Shy-Rack).  It was an interesting movie, well done, I guess.  I don't think that I've seen a Spike Lee film before.  Nick Cannon, host of "America's Got Talent" was the title character, a rapper who goes by the name of Chi-Raq.  He was pretty good.  The woman playing Lysistrata was also very good.  My friend David and I went to Denny's after the movie and just ate and chatted for a couple of hours.  That's why I just got home.

But now, I really need to go to bed because I agreed to drive my friend Margo to the airport in the morning.  And 7:30 a.m. is not a long time from now...that's when I actually need to be at her house.

As far as the book getting as far as Washington State so quickly as well, I am impressed with the post office for that route.

What i can't figure out is why it normally takes five days to a whole week for regular mail to get to (and from) my parents in Miami Beach when it can get to the Northwest so expeditiously.

In Kritzer Time I spend many pages with Benjamin going to classic wrestling matches at the Olympic Auditorium every Wednesday night, as did I for three years straight.  In our LA show I've written a number called Every Wednesday Night about the Golden Age of Wrestling here in LA and it culminates in a staged wrestling match between Freddie Blassie and my favorite, Tricky Ricki Starr.  It is the thing I'm most looking forward to staging.  Trick Ricki was a ballet dancer and wrestler and I loved his matches.  His timing was impeccable, and his act hilarious, but he was also a terrific athlete.  Here, for your viewing pleasure, Tricky Ricki Starr.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFdpXCGCaa4

DR TCB, the Citibank debit card is also my card for all bank transactions from making a deposit or transaction inside a bank to withdrawing money from an ATM. Until that PIN arrives and I've proven it and the card are in my possession, I am blocked from accessing any of my Citibank accounts.

I have access to no money until this thing is settled.  It's very much unsettling me. The wait to Tuesday was fine; it's this wait for a PIN that's ruining my day.

When we had to replace our Chase cards we were able to do it inside the branch. And we set our PIN ourselves.  It seems so odd to me that Citi has this set up so they set your PIN and you have to wait for them to FedEx it to you.

While I keep thinking the dates were March 5 and 6, 1986, the actual dates were March 2 and 3! So, thirty years ago today, my reconstruction of the 1935 Cole Porter-Moss Hart musical comedy JUBILEE completed its second concert performance at Town Hall by The New Amsterdam Theatre Company, conducted by Geg Dlugos, with a cast including Paula Laurence, Robert Fitch, Alyson Reed, Reed Jones, Carole Shelley, Rebecca Luker, Patrick Quinn, Davis Gaines, and Roderick Cook. The late great Bill Tynes was the producer who commissioned the reconstruction on the advice of author Ethan Mordden, who was on the New Amsterdam Theatre Co. board.

I had been involved as music editor, fill-in orchestrator for the New Amsterdam Theatre Co. since its founding by Bill and Evans Haille, and when Bill asked me to score JUBILEE, I assumed the Cole Porter Trust would give me a copy of the vocal score and i would take it home and orchestrate it.  Well, everything was lost. It all vanished after a 1948 production at the St. Louis Muny.  The performance materials never made it back to the Sam Harris office in Manhattan. All that existed were the copyists’ 1935 rehearsal scores.

I agreed to orchestrate a score for a flat fee, but I had to create that score first, writing dance and vocal arrangements and all the utilities as well as determining the keys for a hypothetical cast.  It was hell and took me most of August-November to arrange a new vocal score, then December to February to orchestrate it and copy it for the March performances.  The Cole Porter Trust asked Tommy Krasker to work with me, and his new book, which incorporated material cut from earlier drafts ended up longer than the Ring Cycle.  In September, I asked The Drama Book Shop for a leave of several months, found some wonderful people to help me copy the show for very little pay.  I think I went about $3,000 in the hole to finish it.  Joel Craig, the original dance captain for HELLO, DOLLY!, and I copied most of it, but there were at least three other copyists who helped me through the ordeal.

At the first performance, I ran into John McGlinn who had tried to block the reconstruction (only John McGlinn is qualified to reconstruct a lost musical, he yelled to several folk who gleefully reported it back to me) and he asked me to help him with his 1986 performances of NO NO NANETTE at Carnegie Recital Hall. I accepted his offer and orchestrated “Take A Little One Step” for him.  McGlinn was treating me the way he treated everyone. It took a further fifteen years for his personal demons to do him in.  I also made a lasting friend of one of the cast members, the beautiful new-to-New-York soprano Rebecca Luker, who very soon became McGlinn’s favorite ingenue.

Since those 1986 performances, my reconstruction has been performed by Indiana University Opera Theatre, the Lost Musicals in London, BBC Radio-3, 42nd Street Moon, a 1998 Gay Men’s Health Crisis benefit at Carnegie Hall, and other places. I had heard via Robert Kimble that Kitty Carlisle had pushed for performances in the early years of its existence, but Encores! has continued to ignore it for 22 years.

And back to March 3, 1986: here’s the Overture, conducted by Greg Dlugos.

Back from banking.  There have always been three 15-minute parking spaces right to the west of the bank.  And a loading zone to the east.  Normally, when I know I'll only be a couple of minutes I do the loading zone, but the parking ticket person was there and already being vociferous, so I went to the fifteen-minute meter.  Mind you, these meters have been there for over a DECADE (they used to be normal meters).  I put a quarter in for my fifteen minutes and it didn't work.  I was furious, but thankfully Mr. Ticket Man was right there so I went up to him and told him to fix the meter or give me my quarter back.  He said, "It's telling you it doesn't want you to park there" (I'm not making this up) - I said to him, it didn't tell ME that, it just took my quarter.  He said it was a passenger loading zone.  I said, say what?  I said, why isn't there a sign?  He said there is.  I said there isn't, I parked there yesterday.  He said there is.  I said, when did they put it up, last night?  He said, yes.  I couldn't believe it.  Studio City, which used to be a quaint, charming, friendly neighborhood, thanks to these rich, entitled ASSES who've ruined it with their teardowns and their money all because they just have to have their kids go to this particular school, has now become a venal, sickening place, catering to these jerks.  So, the City has ruined everything because they see CASH.  It used to cost a dime for an hour of parking and there were meters everywhere.  Now it's a quarter for fifteen minutes.  And then they do this passenger loading crap because the new restaurant that's there probably petitioned them to do so so they could use them for their own purposes.  Or whatever.  Thankfully the bank and surrounding stores has its own parking lot and validating is easy and you don't even have to validate if you're under fifteen minutes.

I tell you, after twelve years of living in this house (and seven in my other house two blocks away), I have seen this neighborhood decimated and turned ugly.  So, it may just be time to get the HELL out of here and go back to Sherman Oaks - Grant is fixing up his new purchase and I've seen it and he's adding stuff just for me, and when it's done, in June, I think I'm out of here.

Back from an omelet and a bagel, picking up no packages, and finding no second pension check.  I think the writing is on the wall for that check but they won't reissue it until the tenth.  I am FURIOUS and I've already called the local post office and a supervisor is supposed to get back to me and I will raise holy HELL with whoever that is.  I'm not putting up with this.

UPS delivered a box to me yesterday from Dell with my QVC-purchased new laptop.  Except the laptop was missing.  Only the carrying case was there.   The box looked as though it had been invaded.

Sigh.  I'm sending the box/carrying case back for a FULL refund (postage on them).

Talked to SAG again - next Wednesday they'll put in for the replacement check and it won't even get mailed until the 14th - I'm putting a change of address in so these things go to the UPS Store, where there will be much less likelihood of problems.  I also told him I'd think about direct deposit.  If I go that route, I'll fax him that info tomorrow.  This is really irritating to me - several screeners never arrived here - this jerk probably delivers to the wrong house and if they delivered the pension check to the wrong house I'm sure whoever got it deposited it directly into the trash, since it looks like junk mail.

BK,  take the direct deposit route. It's so simple, and you know exactly when it will land in your account.  I will be getting my tax refunds in this manner, and I already get my social security and pension this way.  It will save you much anxiety and aggravation.

Can someone explain to me how a college, namely Emerson, has the wherewithal or the RIGHT to purchase commercial properties that include the damn Colonial Theater, the theater where Follies tried out - how do they do this?  We're talking about huge amounts of money here.  Is Emerson a privately owned college.  They were going to turn the Colonial into a dining hall - I mean, REALLY?  They've since had such a cry of outrage that they're not doing it, but how do they own this building???

I saw that revival and I never understood one single word Pat Hingle said as Ben Franklin! I saw the original Broadway production and I must admit I thought William Daniels was really wonderful in the role.  You might like the London cast, DR JRand65.  That at least uses Eddie Sauter;s orchestrations and not Mr Besterman's tiny ensemble.

I had no idea this was available on YouTube. I had no interest in wrestling or boxing growing up--until BK told me I MUST watch wrestling. I did so and became somewhat addicted. Tricky Ricki Starr was my favorite, followed by Haystack Calhoun.

We live in a capitalistic society. When a property goes up for sale in most cases anyone with the funds can purchase it. I have known of cases where there was selectivity on the part of the sellers, but often sellers need to sell quickly and simply accept a decent offer.

The only way I know around this is to designate a building as a historical landmark or designate a neighborhood as one, thus creating restrictions on what can be done with the properties. Zoning guidelines can help, but they're more general. I don't understand the reluctance of zoning boards and historical commissions to be more proactive. They often do too little too late, IMO.

I think Daniels' problem was that Ron Holgate, who won the Tony for playing Richard Henry Lee, was also nominated in the same category. Daniels really should have been nominated as best actor.  Several years later, Rita Moreno won best supporting actress for THE RITZ, and she  should have been up for best actress.  As she said in her acceptance speech, all I support in this show are my earrings.

Final seven days of the campaign and we will do whatever it takes to fund the damn thing to its full potential.  Do we have any Broadway window card lovers here?  Because I've got a few goodies:

Shine It On and The Act - the two wonderful posters for The Act - the old title and the new and with new credits for the folks who were let go between these two posters. They're wonderful and I think they'd go as a pair. Suggest a price - if I like it I'll put it up and you can go right there and buy it.
Amadeus - original run and signed by Ian McKelland and Tim Curry.
On the Town - Donna McKechnie, Bernadette Peters revival
Applause Lauren Bacall
The Apple Tree - original production
Pacific Overtures original
Rags Original

It didn't seem to bother Tom Bosley who won featured actor for a TITLE role.

Isn't it up to the producers of any production to request a change in the Tony category based on billing?  If they're name is above the title, they are automatically considered as lead actor/actress, but if they're below the title, they're considered as supporting.

I remember when Joel Grey was first playing Amos in "Chicago" (which is definitely a supporting role), he wasn't nominated at all because (if I remember correctly) the producers just forgot to petition the Tony nominating committee to consider him for supporting role, even though his name was above the title.

I would love (and would be afraid) to know what you'd ask for Amadeus and Pacific Overtures.
