Well, you've read the notes, the notes tried and succeeded, and now it is time for you to post until the succeeding cows come home.

Good morning, all! A good night of sleep two nights ago and an absolutely lousy one last night.  I feel much better than I did two days ago, but I did spend some time this morning considering staying in bed on a heating pad and not leaving it.

One of the songs cut from BABES IN TOYLAND after opening night in Chicago, June 18, 1903, was titled "If I Were A Man Like That," a trio for the Widow Piper and the two comic villains.   The song was announced for publication, but it was canceled as soon as the song was dropped.  The full orchestra score for the song contains the lyrics for the first verse and refrain, but verses two and three are now lost.

When John McGlinn recorded the score in 2001, he debated asking his friend David Zippel to write new lyrics, then decided to record the song as it exists.  I recently told David this story and he said that he would be happy to do that for his late friend. So, I sent him the track and the first verse.  Last night he sent me his first draft - clearly dashed off quickly - and it's really quite wonderful.

To answer your questions, DR elmore:   the town is in the western, industrial part of Germany.  Nearby cities include Dusseldorf and Cologne.   The weather has been good so far.  Well, at least no rain.  It was cloudy Tuesday, but I was in a fog anyway due to jet lag.  Yesterday is was sunny but cold and windy.  Today is sunny and no wind, with seasonable temperatures.  I know it's in the 70's in Washington, but I'd rather have cool crisp weather in March.

We went to the CentrO Mall, which apparently is not only the biggest mall in Germany, but in Europe as well!  That's surprising to me since I don't think it's any bigger than many malls I've been to in various cities in the USA.

After the mail we walked to the Metronom Theater and took pictures.  The show began at 6:30 pm.  We had great seats --6th row center.  I enjoyed the show  so much.   Brent really was fantastic and to hear him speak in German was amazing.  What an undertaking that was!

I think it's a great production of the Phantom.   Afterwards, we went to the stage door to meet Brent and he took us on a backstage tour.  We saw the elephant up close, Christine the mannequin in the chair, the monkey and of course the chandelier, which was uncovered on the edge of the stage.

Then we went to a restaurant named Teatro.  The pizza was very good and the server told me he had made my pizza specially, with vegetables that are not normally used for the veggie pizza (he made I sound as if he had personally made it).   John and I had a great time with Brent-he's so warm and friendly.

Lat night, I began Season 5 of DOWNTON ABBEY:  Edith burned up her room. footman James was caught in bed with a horny aristocrat, and Lady Mary is learning about contraception and this man she's attracted to.  The Russians are coming, Edith is pissing off Marigold's foster mother, and maybe Grandmama has a more scandalous past than anyone knew.

SONS OF ANARCHY

This show was a motorcycle gang version of HAMLET; quite well done.

The problem was that the series should have ended after the 3rd or 4th season when the "Hamlet" character learns that the "Gertrude" and Claudius" characters had killed his father and there is a confrontation.

That "confrontation" went nowhere, and I stopped watching the show after that.  I believe it went on another 2-3 seasons.

Hi, everyone. Just grabbing a quick moment to stop by and let you know that I am still alive. And to apologize to you all for being so very, very errant and truant. I've just been very busy. And sick. Sick! And taking care of our rescue pup. Who ate my homework. In any case, sorry.

I had hoped to catch up on every single post and notes before I came back, but at this rate it's just not going to happen. So I'm jumping back in and will have to catch up as best I can. But I love you all and have missed your daily updates. Apologies also for any birthday greetings I may have failed to offer.

Thursday morning greetings!  Thank you for all the encouragement on my continuing recovery.  Today I was supposed to be at an all-day women's leadership symposium at Miami University, but decided to go only for the afternoon portion.  When my alarm awakened me at 8am, I thought of Katie and Robin who were probably already on their way to Oxford.  Katie and I have another meeting here in town at 7pm, which I may skip if this afternoon wears me out too much.  Pacing is everything...

This weather is just bizarre.  A year ago we were in our third or fourth month of a cold and snowy winter with one huge storm after another, and all during March I was coping with one snowfall after another in commuting to and from "She Loves Me" half an hour down the road.  You never knew if the next rehearsal or performance would be cancelled.  Now it's April, a month early, and we've been a month ahead, weather wise, for the past several weeks.  Yesterday and today every window is open, and the furnace hasn't been on for nearly two days.  This is unheard of.

Me, too!!!

"Once Upon A Time" hit all the wrong notes when, suddenly, "Elsa" from "Frozen" popped up.  It had been hit-or-miss prior to that by at least a season.  (The Neverland season and "The Pan" bored the crap out of me).  I decided to drop it since traditional stories began being interwoven with more recent Disney concoctions.

As for "Grimm", what a mess that show became from such a promising start.  Absolute nonsense.  I did enjoy some of the lead performers, but even they became peripheral as newer elements and characters started being dropped in.

GET TV has been showing episodes of THE THIN MAN with Peter and Phyllis.  It really is an awfully dreary show....I know when I was ten, it was on at 4 p.m. every day.  I don't know if it was a syndication opening or not, but they were in a car with the headlights illuminating the credits....now they are walking the dog down the street....

And they live in an apartment instead of the brownstone with the floating stair case that I remember....maybe I've only seen season two episodes.....

See you 'round the living room!

Welcome back, Sing!

New perk added to tempt everyone - an incredible signed musical quote from Leonard Bernstein - this being from Mass (two bars from Credo) - boldly signed by him and dated 1971, the year in which Mass premiered, which makes this even more valuable.  Priced way under what it's worth, but we're going all the way here. :)  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/l-a-now-and-then-a-new-musical-revue/x/9165600#/

I'm back from Das Phantom der Oper.  Another great performance.  Unfortunately, Elizabeth Welch, who played Christine on Broadway (and is another American in the cast) is on vacation so I saw the alternate Christine both nights.  She was fine, but I was looking forward to seeing Elizabeth.

New perk to tempt everyone :)  An original costume sketch by the legendary Alvin Colt for - hold on to your hats - Li'l Abner - not only that, but it's for Mammy Yokum - beautifully rendered color, signed by Colt, with a pencil notation way below the actual art of "Rae" as in Charlotte Rae, who created the role.  Priced WAY under value and these kinds of things NEVER come up for purchase.  Grab it while the grabbing's good.  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/l-a-now-and-then-a-new-musical-revue/x/9165600#/

Two new tempting perks up - one, another Alvin Colt costume sketch from Abner, and two, a signed note from my close personal friend Stephen Sondheim to me, with most amusing content.  Details, of course, on the Indiegogo page.  We've now covered all the Indiegogo fees and probably the Paypal fee and are on our way to maybe covering the extra musician fee.

Tom, did you see my PM from earlier today?

It was not me.  It was someone trying to use my name to gain access to my friends' accounts.  They were removed by Facebook.
