Well, you've read the notes, you've digested the notes, the notes are now the reader's digest, and now you must simply post until the magic finger cows come home.

I can hardly wait to hear the Writer's Block CD!

CD Player - Pajama Game OBC.
Record Player - Glen Campbell, Wichita Lineman
DVD Player - MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY, the complete 5th season

A warning for DR's interested in this set.  This "official" complete 5th season release contains the EDITED syndication version of the episodes.  You also do not get opening credits with each episode.  They have NOT been digitally enhanced in any way.  Nice to have - but NOT perfect.  I have emailed Questar Entertainment about how I feel, and I will keep you posted.

In the DVD:  We finished KEEN EDDIE last night.  A very Keen series.  I'm dismayed there will be no more.  But it ended well.  I've decided this is the only way to watch a TV series anymore.  Wait till a season comes out on DVD...no commercials, no worrying about when it's on and whether you'll be there week to week, get it all at once and it all takes less time.

We are now embarking on the next set of SCTV shows.  Fun, fun, fun.  Best satirical series ever.

CD: Belshazzar's Feast by William Walton. ROBERTA with Alfred Drake and Kitty Carlisle.  On the same CD: VAGABOND KING also with Alfred Drake. "Sons of shame and sorrow/Will you cheer tomorrow/for the crown of Burgundy.

Reading a spate of W.R. Burnett novels.  For work research.  But what fun work.  Both westerns and crime novels.  Good stuff.

Not much playing right now.  I'm going to have to revamp what's available in the car, in case we've got the younger grandlad in his carseat.  Typical four year old, he's got finicky tastes.

Readingwise, going through Brown's I'm Just Here For More Food and Mimi Sheraton's autobio, Eating My Words.

Most likely Shrek 2 will be in the DVD player over the weekend.

The dog Woody referenced yesterday is a German Shorthaired Pointer named Jill.

She's just a year old - her owner breeds and trains hunting dogs, and This Dog Don't Hunt (he feels bad about others he just took out and shot!)

The County Sheriffs may be interested in her as a drug-sniffing trainee.

As promised, a report on Brooklyn, The Musical.

First, for DTM, who yesterday wrote (in reference to Actor's Equity and tickets):

"...courtesy..."?!?

One of the benefits of membership in the stage actors union is free tickets. They don't happen for Broadway shows as often as they used to, but all "showcase" or Off-Off Broadway shows are open (depending on availability of seats) to Union members for free upon presentation of your Union card. Off-Broadway shows crop up on the free ticket list also and sometimes, if a show is not doing well or the producer wants to generate some publicity or just put buttcheeks in the seat(cheeks) they will give free tickets to a number of outlets to be parceled out to various constituencies. So, as I said, courtesy of Actor's Equity, but it should really be courtesy of the producers of the show, I was able to see Brooklyn last night.

Hello, Dear Gang!!

I've had not much good news to report, so I just stayed away. Well, that's not entirely true-- the not-having-good-news part... here I am in New York City. That's good news. And I've seen SIN - not very good, but good performances -- and it brought me into the Clurman Theater at Theater Row... (about which more in a very little while). And I saw a marvelous SMALL musical - 4 people - at Dodger Stages - called The Immigrant. A fine, touching piece wonderfully performed. And I saw the BMI Music Theatre Workshop Showcase on Monday - Huzzah!!! one after another terrific songs and ensembles. You know, that's where Nine and Avenue Q and some other swell peices were birthed. So maybe i've just seen the birthin' of great things!!!

I've been flying back and forth to LA every 2 weeks, cuz the news back home is sad.

BUT - yesterday my dates were confirmed at said Clurman Theater, in Theater Row on 42nd Street: my JEWISH THIGHS ON BROADWAY loads in on March 14, and opens for 2 weeks on March 16. And I'm so happy I could fly!!! Plus, the sky is a bright blue sunshiny gift today, like so many of these NY Autumn Days!!!

Anyhow, my question is this: Jose, are you still unemployed for much of March? Wanna play?

Now, on to Brooklyn.

I have to admit up front, it's not my kind of show. I'm not a fan of the American Idol kind of singing that seems to have taken over the marketplace. The songs and singers play to that style throughout the show. That being said, I did find some good things about the production.

Unfortunately, the book of the show is not one of the good things/strong points in the show. It is trite and hackneyed and sometimes just flat out bad. There are glimmers of good writing, such as a short monologue by "Paradice" the evil diva songstress of the show about how she was created by the American public and her "effect" on the morals of society. Very powerful, especially considering the outcome of the election on Tuesday, but the good parts are buried under some groaningly bad dialogue and a silly "fairytale" aspect of the plot.

The strongest element of the show is the performance. Across the board, the five characters have strong talent and are able to rise above the workmanlike direction to stand out in individual numbers. Cleavant Derricks, who hasn't been on Broadway since Dreamgirls, is dynamite as a narrator/streetsinger/overall presence. Eden Espinosa as Brooklyn is a great talent. She was in Wicked, playing Nessarose and also understudied Elphaba. Even though Cleavant Derricks gets the final bow, it's her show.

As much as I enjoyed the performances, I have to say the vocal pyrotechnics did get a little tiresome at times. The show runs 1:45 minutes without an intermission and at 9:15 I made the mistake of glancing at my watch and thinking, Oh, my God, what are they going to do for another half-hour?

That's the biggest problem with the show, IMHO (in my humble opinion). It's all over the place with the bad book, just adequate direction, music that runs the gamut from great showpiece for a performer to ear-splitting for no apparent reason. There are standout moments which are then followed by exposition and staging that just grinds the show to a halt.

The show has an audience (granted there was paper in the house last night) but still as I was leaving the theatre I overheard many positive comments about the show. The audience also had many teenagers and young adults (the future of the American Musical Theatre) who seemed to love the show. I hope (and wish) that they are interested in all genres of musical theatre, not just the "cutting edge", new rock synthesized pieces which seem to also be the future of American Musical Theatre.

Well, that's enough about Brooklyn. I am glad I saw the show, though it won't be a repeat for me. I wonder how long it will last. I know that Off-Broadway is not a commercially viable outlet in many cases, but it might have done better and would last longer in one of the Dodger Theatrical spaces (the Off-Broadway complex which has opened in the basement of a new building in midtown) or some similar venue.

Now, on to other topics.

PLUS emails exchanged between us, PLUS a copy of my boarding pass. And The Guy from the AG office has sent her forms to fill out... DR Ben, I was just making a lame joke on the word courtesy, as in an act of kindness.  From what I've heard and read of Brooklyn, I didn't think that Equity was doing you a courtesy at all by giving you tickets to see it.

Yesterday JRAnd asked:

"Which artist or group do you have the MOST recordings by?"

Well, I'm not a "completist" but there are a few groups for which I think I have everthing or almost everything. I have everything from the Chad Mitchell Trio and the various incarnations (they became the Mitchell Trio after Chad left and had singers come and go, including John Denver). I also have almost  everything by Peter, Paul and Mary, including an odd radio show from 1969 with Skitch Henderson. He hosted a show for National Guard troops and PPM appeared on the show in July and August of 1969 talking and performing some of their songs. I got it on cassette years ago from Sandy Hook (remember them) and just recently transferred it to CD. The only recording of PPM that I don't have is a live recording of a concert in Japan in the late 60s, which I have heard about but never seen. I also think I have everything from Michael Feinstein. I have a great deal of Sondheim, though not everything (I don't have the Night Music w/Judi Dench for example). I also have a lot of Barbara Cook, both show and solo CDs. In fact, I think starting from the Carnegie Hall concert in 1975 I think I have all the commercially produced CDs by Miss Cook. I have all of Nancy LaMott's CDs. I have all of Mandy Patinkin's CDs (I know he's an aquired taste). I have 3 of Lyn Larsen's AKA Music Guy) organ CDs (Kerry, are there any more?). I also have (with the help of DR Jay) the complete set of Capitol Sings CDs, ranging from Harold Arlen to Duke Ellington to Johnny Mercer to Around the World and more. IIRC (if I remember correctly) there are 20 CDs in the set.

That's enough. I don't post much and now I have logorrhea (look it up  ;)).

That's all for now.

Good morning, all!  First sleeping night without a Tylenol/Excedrin PM aid.  That's a good sign.

DRD-I-T, VALMOUTH is one of my favorite scores, so I'll plug the TER/JAY Chichester cast recording for a moment:  beautiful chamber orchestration, relatively good cast, and much more complete numbers, like the aphrodisiac section of "Magic Fingers."  I've read the Firbank novel a couple of times, but it's like reading a dirty joke in smoke signals.  Sandy Wilson did a fantastic job of turning it into a decadent, and quite funny, musical.  The other advantage of the TER recording is that it includes the great Bertice Reading, for whom Mme Yajnavalkya was written and who was replaced by Cleo Laine for the West End transfer.  Somewhere on tape I've got a BBC recording of the entire show with Alberta Hunter doing the role.  It's great to hear the whole show but Hunter's a bit too genteel for the old bawd.

Let's proceed to the TOD:
VCR:  I need to learn how to use this new contraption, which didn't record last weekend.  I'm still bummed, so I need to find the instruction book.  The old SONY was so easy!  I just bought the O.P. Glyndebourne video of Verdi's FALSTAFF, his greatest opera in my book.
DVD:  I'm leaning toward the new releases of Margot Fonteyn dancing SLEEPING BEAUTY and CINDERELLA with the Royal Ballet.  Her new bio just came out and I want to read it.  After that, I've got some discs courtesy of DRMBarnum to consider.
CD:  Herbert's BABES IN TOYLAND & THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, Kern's HAVE A HEART & OH, LADY! LADY! for the project I'm working on, possibly VALMOUTH now, always HAINES HIS WAY, and perhaps some Judy Collins.  I've still got IL TROVATORE with Price and Milnes sitting out, and I've fallen in love with Ponchielli's LA GIOCONDA, fantastic score ("Dance of the Hours") but an almost undecipherable plot.

DRBen, I love the Chad Mitchell Trio!  I blame them for turning me into a raving Democrat.  In the early 1990s, they had a reunion at Symphony space and I went backstage to meet them and tell them how they influenced my life.  I didn't like Chad much personally, but Mike was very kind, and Joe Frazer, who's gay and now a minister, was wonderful.

The World's Most Fascinating Media Check of Me:

CD Player (at home):  George Winston -- The Music Of Vince Guaraldi.

CD Player (at work):  Nothing.  I've been on a internet radio kick this week and I'm listening to classical music channels.

DVD Player:  Felix the Cat.  This one was one of the $1 DVDs I picked up at Target last week.  These are very early Felix cartoons from the 20s, and a little bit of these goes a long way and not in the good sense.  Interesting only in the historical sense.

VHS:  A Disney Halloween cartoon compilation.  It has Donald Duck's Trick or Treat on it.

I wouldn't see BROOKLYN even for free.  First of all the 4 song demo was absolutely terrible and if that is the best of the score, I can imagine how bad the rest is.  And second, these are the producers who shafted BK on the TFNM stage production (and I think his movie as well) so I would not support them in any way.

***

BK - Before you make your comments on BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL --- which I gather will not be that favorable --- please remember two things:  (1) these were not meant for big fans of the genre, but as a basic primer for people who don't know a lot about the topic; and (2) they had only about 330 minutes to cover over 100 years.

***

Media Check:

CD - "Look, Ma, I'm Dancing" - OBC

DVD - Volume 2 of the Looney Tunes which has a lot of the titles people complained were not in Volume 1

Well, DR's, the Garden is no longer a secret.  "The Secret Garden" opened last night to a rather small audience of family and friends.  Probably a good audience for last night's show as the kids made mistakes they'd never made before.  We have three more shows and I predict they will be fab-oo.  Especially Sunday when we have a REAL trumpet player, the guy I hired is lame, doesn't practice and backed out of the last matinee AFTER he committed to the run of the show.  You heard it here, DR's, having a music degree (or any degree) does not mean you are great at what you are educated for!!!

I have a great deal of Sondheim, though not everything (I don't have the Night Music w/Judi Dench for example).

Ben (and der Brucer from a private message from several months ago), would you like a copy?

Lovely doggie photo derBrucer.  What lovely eyes that canine has!

Thanks for the BROOKLYN review DRBEN.  Hmmmmmmmmm.....did people complain in the 1940's that Broadway shows weren't as good as they had been in the 1920's?

Congrats to PENNYO on her THIGHS and to MATTHEW on getting THE SECRET GARDEN up and running!

I am hard at work on my new script as well.  I have just put in a bid on a SCARFACE DVD gift set so that I can get the Pacino AND the MUNI versions!  And I am waiting for my DVD of DIE MOMMIE DIE.

Weekend is here!  Congratulations to MBARNUM'S friend and wife!

DRJAY don't forget to watch a bit more of your tape.  Linda Darnell and Tennessee Ernie Ford await you.

DRJRand54, most people in the 1940s doing an earlier show felt the need to bring it up to current standards, much like today.  Kern's SALLY got revived for Bambi Lynn and half the score was replaced with Kern standards, Paula Stone revived her father's 1907 THE RED MILL with state-of-the-art Russell Bennett orchestrations replacing Victor Herbert's and Otto Langey's. SWEETHEARTS got a revisical as well, not to mention Hammerstein and Kern's attempt to turn the 1920s SHOWBOAT into a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical play.

Critic George Jean Nathan, sick of ballets, said "Cripes, what I wouldn't give for an old-fashioned hoofing chorus."

I had a bit of musical theatre luck this lunch hour. I went to Academy instead of going home for lunch, since Anthony is on Long Island for a few days and what should be in the "Shows" bin but a copy of George M for $1.99. I opened it to make sure it was the show and to check for a scratched disc. It is the show and I don't see any scratches. A nice little find on the brisk Autumn afternoon.

I am slowly depersonalizing my office computer. Some time next week I will be getting a brand new computer. Even though they will reformat my current hard drive I am deleting things and moving it back to the state it was when I received it well over two years ago (eons in current technology time). The new PC will have a working burner but no Floppy (or A:) drive. How times change. I still have some back ups on floppys (I almost typed Floopy DR Sandra, an almost reference to your world-famous Floop) so I had to move them to a secure network folder so I can move them back to my new system next week.

Technology marches on. And I march on to lunch.

Today's NY TIMES op-ed page appealed to me:

www.nytimes.com/2004/11/05/opinion/05herbert.htm?th

Quote
Which brings me to the Democrats - the ordinary voters, not the politicians - and where they go from here. I have been struck by the extraordinary demoralization, even dark despair, among a lot of voters who desperately wanted John Kerry to defeat Mr. Bush. "We did all we could," one woman told me, "and we still lost."

Is no one asking "Did we run the best candidate"? Most of the Republican Vietnam era Vets I know that voted for Bush were voting AGAINST Kerry, not for Bush.

Has no one noticed how poor a campaign Kerry ran - they fell into almost every trap that Rove & Co. set.

Has no one noticed the "bigger picture" - that there are lots of us who would have been very happy to wake up on Wednesday morning to a Democrat controlled Senate?

I won’t ruin your day by posting the list of the 11 candidates on Bush's Supreme Court short list - be afraid, be very afraid!

In the short term if those on the left want to avoid the looming catastrophes on the domestic front (further degradation of civil liberties, a bankrupt nation, worsening medical care for most segments of our society - if that's possible) then they need to postpone scheming for Hillary 08 and concentrate on forging alliances with the few more progressive Republicans necessary to stop the Administration's pending Domestic train wreck.

A good start would be for the angry and demoralized (rightly so) left to drop the "Spawn of Satan"  rhetoric and earnestly seek out allies on key issues. You don't need us to love you, just to side with you on key issues.

Quote
Even though you say the devil knocks at my door
And you say my ship will not reach the shore
I've got a will and a thousand ways,
I've got a dream of a thousand better days
I've got a smile that just stays and stays,
That's the way it's gonna be, wait and see.

Even though you say I've reached the end of the road
And you say the tides are all runnin' low
Victory is waiting for me round the bend
I won't stay down for the count of ten
I've said it before, and I'll say it again,
That's the way it's gonna be, wait and see.

Sad, and ironic, to say that I see that today's NYTimes has printed an obituary for Mr. Bushkin, who passed away on Wednesday.

Sad, and ironic, to say that I see that today's NYTimes has printed an obituary for Mr. Bushkin, who passed away on Wednesday.

In an even more ironic twist of fate, it seems that Mr. Bushkin's son-in-law, who reported the death to the Times, bears the same name as the late baritone Robert Merrill.

So, upon reading that Robert Merrill reported Bushkin's passing, my first thought was "How did he do that?  He's dead too!"

So now all you Dear Readers out there in the dark (oooh, a SUNSET BOULEVARD reference) know that I possess a rather maudlin, and occasionally inappropriate, sense of humor.  Especially where death is concerned.

In my VCR:  a tape with Wednesday's "Lost," last night's 8-10pm NBC line-up, a couple of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" episodes, and (hopefully) enough room for tonight's "Star Trek:  Enterprise," just in case I don't make it home in time.

In my DVD player:  Warren Miller's "Bloopers, Blunders and Bailouts (http://www.mchalet.net/39640.html)."  Last night I ushered for the Warren Miller film "Impact (http://www.warrenmiller.com/wmiller/)" that came to the Washington Center for the Performing Arts.  I bought the "Bloopers" DVD there.

In my CD player at work:  Sarah Brightman.  Love her or hate her, but I saw her in concert.  The CD that I have is "The Harem World Tour:  Live from Las Vegas (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002VYPCG/qid=1099681605/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-8186576-8171234?v=glance&s=music)."  I really enjoyed the concert.  My mom really only liked it when Sarah sang "operatically"...not the pop stuff.

After Sarah will be "I Sent a Letter to My Love (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004SZTS/qid=1099681285/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i3_xgl15/002-8186576-8171234?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)," a musical written by and starring Melissa Manchester.  It also has Stephen Bogardus, Meagan Fay, Megan Mullally and Paul Anthony Stewart (I've never heard of him).  I listened to it once, from the library, but I got it used a few weeks ago for only $8.  It's 2 CDs!  Couldn't pass it up.

From the 1957 Capitol LP:

joe bushkin is a slender, exuberant man, a pianist, composer and arranger of superb talents and impeccable taste....Sinatra said, "One of the things I hated to leave when I quit the Dorsey band was the piano playing of Joe Bushkin."

Bushkin wrote his first song "Oh Look at Me Now" while with the Dorsey band, which became Sinatra''s first hit....

He succeeded David Rose as Music director of "Winged Victory."  In 1949 he became an actor.

He appeared onstage in Garson Kanin's THE RAT RACE playing a muscian and writing the incidental music.

When it came to his attention that 1957 would signalize Berlin's fiftieth anniversary as a composer, Bushkin undertook the task of selecting fifty of the master's greatest songs....and recording them for Capitol.

Review from me:  It is terrific piano album!  ;D

DR Matthew - Glad to know you're making your way through the maze.  And I know what you mean about "degreed players".  There really is a different set of skills and mindset needed for playing shows.  Thankfully, I have those skills and mindset - tangible and intangible.  And I always get a slight kick out of "classical players" who seem to be "slumming" when they take a show gig... and then can't play the book!  HA!

DRCharlesPogue, I'm having a hard time getting into MORALITY PLAY, but I loved THE SONG OF THE KINGS, which takes place primarily on the shore of Aulis while the Greeks are waiting for the wind to sail.  It's a very smart book, finding an intelligent solution to Iphigeneia's arrival in Tauris after she was sacrificed by her father.

Yippee!!!

I just spoke with one of the most friendly* hotel reservations agents I've ever had the pleasure to deal with, and she was able to book me and Steve for three nights in NYC next week! So.. We'll now be there from Tuesday afternoon through Friday morning!  -Which is what I was trying for in the first place, but everything seems to be "booked" next weekend.  Is there something coming into town?  Or is it just the start of the Fall tourist/fashion-shopping season in NYC?  -So we'll now have two full days in NYC instead of just one "weekend".  YIPPEE!!!!

*Friendly in a New York sort of friendly if you know what I mean.  She seemed a little rough around the edges, but she kept asking me some additional questions: Have you stayed with us before?  Are you with a business?... OH!  You were booked here with a theatre company?  Well, then... I'll go ahead and pass on the discounted corporate for you.  THANK YOU!!

YIPPEE!!!

*Of course, this extra day in NYC just means one more day before I have to return to my "real life" back home in Richmond. ;)

Could have been DR STUART.  Frances lay dying in the hospital as Lois Kibbee was sweating over the book.  When Frances died, her friend Jean demanded that Kibbee turn over all materials to her, and she finished the book.  It was edited by Vivian Vance's husband John Dodds and released two years after Frances died (August, 1970) as "the autobiography BY..." even though after the second paperback printing it was published as "the autobiography OF..."  and in fact the TV Movie tie-in paperback edition was published under the Dell "Fiction" imprint rather than "Non Fiction."

OH!  And speaking of my "real life" back in Richmond...

It seems that once I get back there on Monday (before turning right around and heading to NYC Tuesay morning), I will be coming home to:

-A "new" bathroom:  new floor (no more patchy tile work), new vanity and a new sink!
-A repaired front porch - there were two floor boards that had holes(!) in them.
-A new screen door for the back door.
-A new door for the back door!  The old was starting to droop really bad on it's hinges.  *Which means we can now keep the back door "open" during the cooler weather since we now have a screen door!  Yippee!

Hopefully, the mice have not returned, but even if they had/have... ah, well..  My roommate hasn't spotted anything, so... <fingers-crossed>

And I do have to give my roommate, Christopher, some sort of "props" for having to deal with the bathroom deconstruction/reconstruction.  He actually had to go out of town last week, and we were hoping the landlord would schedule the work for the time when both of us were away.  Of course, the work started the second day I was here in Houston.  The dust, apparently, was horrible!  But he made do, and managed not to fall through the planks that were laid down in the bathroom while the work was being done.  -And, thankfully, our upstairs neighbor let him use her bathroom when needed.

OK - I do need to get to the post office...

Laters...

Yes indeed, Lois had just gotten the gig on THE EDGE OF NIGHT when she was working on the book.  Her father was actor Milton Kibbee and her uncle was Guy Kibbee.

She was a bit astonished to be met in Indianapolis by a drunk gray haired woman wearing a man's overcoat.  It took her awhile to figure out it was Frances - and she said she only hoped someone else was driving them home from the airport....no such luck.

Thanks to DR Ben for the review of BROOKLYN. Your comments seem to parallel what others who have seen it have said. Re "Valmouth". I have the Chichester 1982 recording. Big Deal (a Fosse reference). Mark Wynter played the role of Captain Dick Thoroughfare. Significance. On my recent trip to London, the only Cd I purchased was one by Mark Wynter. He had a very successful pop career here and in the Uk in the early 1960's. He is also on one of the recordings of "Robert & Elizabeth".
I"m sure you all needed to know that.

Yesterday's JR question: I would have at least 40 CDs of Dusty Springfield and about the same of Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel (Duo and Solo careers). I have not repalced all of my vinyl of these favourites though. I probably have more Paul McCartney on Cd and record than I have of anyone else.

Been too busy for VCR, DVD and Cd this week. I've been compiling discs of obscure Australian release only recordings (1960s) for a radio station here. The record companies no longer exist and the market would not justify any commercial release of the material.

Had another "pleasant" encounter at my favorite jewelry store counter.

And I didn't even ask for a box this time.  Because I didn't want to start a fight.

Today the items were an 30% off, and unfortunately my $42 necklace scanned at $6.30.  Well that is a good price.  But it was supposed to be 30% off of $10.50.

The elderly woman (a different one from last time) tried to tell me the discount was already in the computer.

OMG, if another person tries to tell me that I may go crazy.  First off 30% off of $10.50 is not $6.30.

So i nicely explained that to her (as well as the fact that I could get the 6.30 price any day, since that was the scanning price).

Anyhow luckily she was not too bright, and bought my explanation without too much discussion.  I was actually afraid she was going to get her co-worker (which WAS THE WOMAN I HAD THE FIGHT WITH LAST TIME).  So I was very happy to get out of there.

But again, I could tell she thought I was ungrateful.  She thought I should be happy that the price was less than what it was supposed to be.  And while I agree, it totally defeats the point of an EXTRA 30%.

Oy.

Thanks to DR Ben for the review of BROOKLYN. Your comments seem to parallel what others who have seen it have said. I think this show, like RENT and AIDA, is just not for me despite the talent of the performers. I didn't enjoy either of those musicals though I know plenty of other people who think they're great. I'd rather listen to BELLS ARE RINGING.

Do you think that the same people who like RENT like AIDA?

I love RENT.  And I sort of think I'd like BROOKLYN (I really liked what I saw on the Today show).  But I didn't care for AIDA as much (although I loved Sherie Rene Scott so much).

To me AIDA is more like J&H (two shows my dad adores).

One more comment about the election. THough my state went heavily in favor of Bush, I was absolutely delighted to see the final voting results in the newspaper this morning and my city, Charlotte, carried a pluraity for Kerry (and also for Erskine Bowles for the Senate who also lost to the congressman who has accepted more special interest money than any other - Richard Burr).

I did enough pages today to cover the missed writing of yesterday, and today's writing.  So, I'll be exactly where I want to be by tomorrow (I may even do two extra pages today and be there by this afternoon) - then I can take most of Saturday and all of Sunday off, and resume on Monday and begin the final twenty pages or so.  Whew!  Now, what to eat.

I've been heating the pool since noon and it just reached seventy-five - it's a bit brisker than normal out and I guess it just takes longer when the weather is colder.

Just had a lovely conversation with my house owner and he's a great guy.  Taking care of the three or four outstanding things left to take care of.  I may actually meet him later if I'm around - he has mail to pick up.  If I'm away I'll leave it outside, but if I'm here, I'll say hello.

For the interest of the few pop people (of a certain age) at HHW,I have also recorded hard to find US singles "There's No Such Thing" (Jimmy Darren -from "Gidget") and Santo & Johnny's version of the theme from "Come September"

DRJennifer, I went into RENT expecting to hate it and loved it so much I've seen it around six times now!  I've scored two numbers from AIDA for singers, and I find it a poor excuse for Verdi's great opera, not very tuneful and rather embarassing; those "Aida, Aida" choruses seems so much an Evita ripoff.

This number ("In the Convent" for those of you familiar with NUNCRACKERS) will be the most demanding one for me in the show, I believe. Most of the rest of the things I'm in are stand and sing numbers with simple movements rather than specific dancing.

Wow! At first I thought I'd read:

This man collects Mr BK's garbage!
He looks like he's dressed up for it!! :D

And BK's landlord without his X-Man costume.

I don't think BK gives him enough money; the guy can't even afford a decent shirt! ;)

I should even say; any shirt at all!
Disgraceful!! :)

Good Evening!

Interesting show tonight... Our Richie had an accident/injury mid-show, and ended up not dancing the Finale.  However, he did stay through the "Alternatives" section and "What I Did For Love", but he didn't come out for the Finale.  -And during the "Alternatives" section, you could tell the whole notion of "How would you feel if you had to stop dancing?" was hitting close to home - I could tell from the way he was talking that he was starting cry on stage.  Hopefully, come morning, he'll be all right.  Or at least well enough to make it through the show with some modified choreography.

-His understudy actually snapped his Achilles the other night (ouch!) during the opening number, and he's been out since Wednesday.  So...  We'll just have to wait and see (as Morales says..)

GOOD HEALING VIBES!

*We just have three more shows to go too!

OH.. in a more light-hearted vein... One of the swings took "Richie's" place during the finale.    Now, our Richie is about 5'8"-9", very muscular... and black - like Richie is supposed to be.  Well, the swing that came in is tall - 6'5"+, lanky and white.... so... You could just sense the "Who is that?" vibe from the audience when he came out during the opening Bows section of the Finale.

;)

I bought SHREK 2 for myself tonight, and just finished watching it.
May I say two words: JENNIFER SAUNDERS!

(I bought the movie for Dame Julie's participation, but, I'll be hitting Chapter 17 for quite some time to come; I might even have to buy the soundtrack cd for Ms. Saunders' shining moment).

Well, I have to be at the theatre in 12 hours, so...  -And possibly - but hopefully not - for a put-in rehearsal.

Goodnight.

Friday media report:

CD (car) - Ella Fitzgerald's Rodgers and Hart Songbook - loved this on LP ever since being Elmore's rehearsal assistant for a R&H revue almost 30 (yikes!) years ago and finally splurged on the CD's last weekend.

But before I go to the Wussburgerland...

My favorite "splurge" has been the Complete Ella Fitzgerald Songbooks box set.  And what a box set!  All those mini-album covers, a separate book, and the alternate takes!  Musical heaven on earth!  -And the Arlen ones are my favorites.
