Well, you've read the notes, the notes struck back, and now it is time for you to post until the striking cows come home.
-
Hello.
-
And the word of the day is: LEVIGATE!
-
First post after BK, after Jane, after BK!
-
Tom, maybe the quality of the cashews combined with how they are roasted gives them moreflavor. Unroasted and my mouth itches.

I am really enjoying the Day Runner stories. I find it all very fascinating.

As am I. I have no memory like that, nor have I ever written any kind of diary or journal. It is fascinating to read about all the things you went through. Keep 'em comin'!

From last night...Tom, the call-back is (now) tonight, but tomorrow (Tuesday) will only happen if pug really needs it. At least, that's what I understand what will happen.
-
When I first started dong plays, callbacks were very rare. Occasionally, if there was two or more actors for a role, and the director couldn't decide who to use, there might be a callback just for that one role or maybe a couple.
-
And the answer to your other question is www.brownpapertickets.com (http://www.brownpapertickets.com). Maybe it's just because I'm so used to it, but I find it a lot easier to use, but Jacqui, the board member who set it all up, says that it's got a lot more options for us, more reports, etc., so it's what we're using now. The downside is that they take more of a cut of our sales than BPT, but it wasn't my decision. I don't set up the ticket sales sites...nor do I want to. ::)

I know, but there are seven male roles and 18 or 19 men auditioned. There was a plethora of talent. I don't envy pug her decisions...but hopefully, I make the cut!

Oh I understand. I was really making a comment on how automatic callbacks have become. The callback notice is announced at the same time as the audition notice. Often, an entire extra set of actors arrive for callback who were never at the initial auditions.

Here in Olympia, there is the Olympia Actors League (OAL), which once a year coordinates one big group audition for all the local theaters (who choose to participate). I've heard that if someone can't make it to the OALs, then they usually can contact the theater company to see if they can come to their individual call-backs.
-
TAO doesn't participate in the OALs anymore. When pug was auditioning for a show a few years ago, she contacted quite a few of the OAL auditioners for call-backs who specified that they wanted to be considered for the show and NONE of them showed up, even after confirming that they would. :P And a couple of other shows had a few OAL people come to call-backs, but again, not as many as who said that they would. So TAO doesn't participate. It hasn't been worth it.
-
I don't participate in it, either. I would MUCH prefer to audition for a specific show than just audition and never hear anything...which has happened.
-
Good night, George.
-
And now, I must go to bed, too. It's officially 1:35 am, but my body thinks it's only 12:35. I NEED to readjust my internal clock so that I don't get to work any later than I already usually do.
Good night, Tom and 1 Guest. 8)

Good night, 1 Guest!
-
I should be sleeping
-
I am enjoying the trips down memory lane. What play was it that you were in May through July of 1973? You didn't mention the play or the role
-
Wow, post 21 before 6 a.m. EST!

Or is it post 22, but reply 21?

Callback success vibes to George!

Breaks leg vibes to George

Good morning, all!
-
I have my eye exam this morning at 10:30, and it's a rainy day to be out and about.
-
I love the Day Runner stories. I mentioned that yesterday morning, I believe.
-
Last night I finished Season Six of DOWNTON ABBEY; I had thought the new footman Andy was intended to end up with underbutler Barrow, but I was wrong. I also was hoping someone would shut down Denker, the repellant maid, for good, and I was happy to see Sad Sack Edith's happy ending at last. that whole continual whining Marigold plot went on far too long and worked my last nerve.
-
I need to order a new floor lamp. the one I hade just died.
-
First, more coffee.

!! 2 !!
-
Good morning, all.
On this Daylight Savings Monday.
-
Keep those Day Runner notes coming!
-
Monday morning greetings! I have a cardiologist appointment this morning and a pulmonologist appointment this afternoon. All in all, I'd rather be coloring...
-
BK, I'm enjoying the DayRunner posts, too. They make me want to look back at my DayTimers!

I'm up, I'm up - briefly and barely - forgot this:
Kritzerland is proud to present the world premiere release of the complete soundtracks to two classic Twentieth Century Fox movies on a great 2-CD set:
SUN VALLEY SERENADE and ORCHESTRA WIVES
Musical Direction by Alfred Newman and Emil Newman
Featuring The Glenn Miller Orchestra
Songs by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon
It’s funny how music can define an entire era, and Glenn Miller’s unique sound did just that. It was no surprise when Twentieth Century Fox snapped up Miller and his band for the movies. He only did two but they were perfect vehicles. They were cleverly built around him, and he was surrounded by excellent actors, singers, and dancers. The stories were simple, they didn’t overstay their welcome, and the music was superb.
Sun Valley Serenade (1941), featured Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie, John Payne, Milton Berle, Lynn Bari, Joan Davis, Dorothy Dandridge, the amazing The Nicholas Brothers, and, of course, Glenn Miller and his orchestra, along with The Modernaires.
In addition to some Miller classics (“Moonlight Serenade,” “In the Mood”), the movie also featured a few great songs by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon, including a song that would become one of Miller’s biggest hits, “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” which, in the film, is a spectacular production number with Dandridge and The Nicholas Brothers. Another great new song, “At Last,” was also recorded for the film, but wasn’t used, except as background music for several scenes. The song itself would end up in the next Miller film, because Sun Valley Serenade proved to be so popular, that Fox immediately put another Glenn Miller vehicle before the camera, this one entitled Orchestra Wives.
Orchestra Wives was a bit more serious than the light and airy Sun Valley Serenade. This time the cast included George Montgomery, Ann Rutherford, Lynn Bari, Cesar Romero, Marion Hutton (sister of Betty), The Modernaires, and, of course, The Nicholas Brothers. We also get some wonderful Harry Warren and Mack Gordon songs, including “At Last” (the castoff from Sun Valley Serenade), “Serenade in Blue,” “People Like You and Me,” and the instant classic, “I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo.” The latter was, like “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” nominated for an Oscar for Best Song.
This is the first time Sun Valley Serenade and Orchestra Wives are being released complete, each CD close to eighty minutes in length. Previous LP and CD releases didn’t have particularly good sound, but for this release the sound has been lovingly restored by Mike Matessino from the Fox vault elements – it’s safe to say, you’ve never heard these scores sounding like this. It should be noted that while the films were given a synthesized stereo treatment in the early 1990s for home video, all of the original music elements are, in fact, mono. Yet they remain as clear and vibrant as the day they were recorded. All the songs, the incidental scoring, and some amazing bonus material is all here. While some of the bonus material had made it onto CD, it was taken directly from the films themselves and sounded horrible. And there are quite a few never-before-released tracks.
Sun Valley Serenade/Orchestra Wives is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $29.98, plus shipping.
CDs will ship by the first week of May, but we’ve actually been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.
ATTENTION INDIEGOGO CONTRIBUTORS: FOR THIS RELEASE – IF YOU WANT TO OPT-OUT OF RECEIVING IT YOU WILL NEED TO SEND US AN E-MAIL OPTING OUT PRIOR TO THE DATE IT SHIPS – SEND TO kritzerland@gmail.com. IF YOU WISH TO RECEIVE IT, YOU DON”T NEED TO DO ANYTHING. IF YOU ARE NOT AN INDIEGOGO CONTRIBUTOR, ORDER AS YOU NORMALLY WOULD. THANK YOU.

Those soundtracks will be new to the likes of me, and I look forward to hearing them in all their original mono glory.

Well, here it is, gang. Post 13000!
Modest, of course, in comparison to you oldies here. But a nice round number nonetheless, brought in in just under four years.
Wait. Four years? Pshaw! Maybe I need to up my game.
-
The great thing for me about this range of Day Runner entries is that these are my early years living in L.A. My friend and I pulled into Hollywood on Saturday, June 10th, 1972, and took a small apartment for one week on Orange Dr. behind the Chinese. (I remember it as Orange; there's some question as to whether it was Orchid instead, but I'd have to stand in front of the few remaining two-story apartment structures to have any hope of determining which it was.) A week later I'd secured the apartment at Franklin and Whitley that would be home for the next three years.

Not only that, but I sat here and MADE myself figure out how to preserve the big moment.
Let's see if this will paste in decently....

Good morning, all.
On this Daylight Savings Monday.
Could that be why I woke up at 6:30 this morning?
-
This one's for DR Elmore. We were talking about seeing Merman, and I have this one memory which is barely even that -- I just ABOUT remember actually sitting there and watching her on stage.
-
I'm still looking for the "Clear Day" program from around that time. It's buried somewhere.
I've taken out my score and recording, and am going to enjoy re-familiarizing myself with it.
-
Good morning, all.
Happy Monday vibes. Callback vibes for George.
-
Add me to the "Loving the Day Runner Stories" list.
-
BK, many thanks for this upcoming CD release. Years ago, I had the stereo CD of Miller's work for these two soundtracks, but I loaned it out and never got it back. Then I bought the cheap release that includes more music, but the sound was horrible.
Now, I'm going to get great sound, "The Kiss Polka" and all the rest.
Yee and haw.
I'm still waiting for someone to release Sun Valley Serenade on DVD. Thanks to DR Michael, I watch it now on YouTube, but it isn't the same.
-
To add to the Arthur Miller discussion: A View from the Bridge is more effective and affecting IMO than Salesman.
I also remember seeing a production of The Price at the Berkshire Theater Festival years ago that was wonderful because the actors had such a good time doing it. I don't recall as much emotional involvement in Salesman.
-
What the hell time is it?
-
I also am enjoying the Day Runner posts. Most entertaining!!!
-
Great CD Release!!!! Looking forward to it!!!

I love the Day Runner palaver! And I don't even know what a pavaler is. Anyway, even though I've read your biographies, I still find it very interesting.

Stephen King festoons his prose with the word "palaver" a little too much for my tastes.

Well, my friend John deMain isn't conducting but my late friend Billy Matthews directed!
-
I have been examined and have purchased for $608 my new glasses, which should be ready by the end of the week.

Sun Valley Serenade/Orchestra Wives -- CLASSIC stuff!!!
-
I posted about the release on a Glenn Miller Facebook page - oh, Lord, if you think soundtrack enthusiasts are anal-retentive, you ain't seen nothin'. Of course the stereo-ization of the home vid releases was brought up, but thankfully Mike Matessino had already addressed that on the film score message board, where one poster who is notorious for spreading nothing but incorrect information all over the Internet brought it up.
"Upon evaluating the original elements and finding no legitimate dual perspective material, I back-traced the project to the early '90s with what is now Deluxe Audio and discovered that technically this was a Chace Stereo project. As you know, it was relatively new at the time, and this was simply an example of Fox trying it out.
Yes there are separate overlays and separate vocals -- for SOME but not ALL of the songs -- which allowed, for example, for the orchestra to be stereo-ized while the vocals are basically kept mono. And, yes there are occasional instances where passages between verses have distant orchestra on the vocal track, which could have been utilized to enhance things into a stereo image, but that's it. Any discerning ear can tell what's going on by listening to the track from those videos.
Only where we have genuine dual perspective "push-pull" elements does it make sense to create stereo for a CD soundtrack release and that was not the case here (occasionally I'll stereo-ize a mono track if it has to blend with true stereo material around it). We have not actually had those push/pull elements for titles as early as this. It's the late '40s through '53 that we find them.
The most obvious evidence in this case is that the orchestral material was not slated with two numbers (11 & 12, 81 & 82, etc.) as they would be if they were recorded in dual perspective. Could it have been synthetically stereo-ized? Sure, but that would not have been responsible preservation. The documentation and the elements are clear, even if memories are not."
-
Ah, yes.
Yes, yes.
-
I have parted with my calendars that kept track of my life. the last of them just recently when we purged our keepsakes for the move.
-
I have an appointment with an orthopedist for Wednesday.
-
I watched part 1 of Lifetime's presentation of "And Then There Were None" last evening. It wraps up tonight.
It is reasonably faithful to Agatha Christie's plot, but the characters have been altered to provide more depth into their personalities. I think it works pretty well up to the mid-point. Am anxious to see how it all plays out.
I love the Rene Clair-directed film of this title and the play "Ten Little Indians". Have been in two productions -- in one I was Tony Marston (the first to die) and in the second I was Philip Lombard.
In this production, the "figures" are abstract "soldiers" rather than Indians. The "house party" is in a manse (a solitary structure) on "Soldier Island" well away from the mainland of wherever in the U.K. this version is set.
-
Callback success vibes to George!
Thanks, Fred!

Ron, thanks for the report on "And Then There Were None".

Went back to bed for a couple of hours, got up, the phone hasn't stopped ringing, fixed books have been overnighted to me, and this popped up on You Tube - I've been waiting for it from the beginning of You Tube and had resigned myself to the fact that it simply did not exist. And yet...

Peter Maxwell Davies' work on The Boy Friend was and is spectacular - incredible orchestrations and arrangements.
-
Ah! Nice clip.
I did see someone on Facebook had started talking about the "stereo" on the Miller tracks.....it didn't make much sense to me, and he seemed to disprove his own point.
-
Congrats to DR CHAS SMITH and also to DR GEORGE on their millstones.
Callback vibes for DR GEORGE.
Good news from DR GINNY.
Test vibes for DR GINNY and DR RLP.

I have an appointment with an orthopedist for Wednesday.
I have a pulmonary test set up for Wednesday morning.
I'm expecting a call from the hospital to schedule my lung function test, as ordered by the pulmonologist I just saw. Also, a text from the pharmacy telling me that my nasal spray and rescue inhaler are ready to pick up.

Stereo, schmereo. Frankly, I just trust you to give me the best damn representation of my beloved Sun Valley Serenade soundtrack possible.

Test vibes for DR GINNY and DR RLP.

I'm on the last disc of the novel Brooklyn. So wonderfully written. So quietly devastating.
I really want to see the movie now.

I doubt I would pass that and I don't have a cough. Good luck!!!!

Test vibes for DR JANE as well.....I missed that post.....

Thank you DR Jrand though I'm not sure what test there will be on Wednesday. I expect there might be an x-ray to begin with.
I am getting my bones checked on Friday and hope they have not deteriorated more.

I'll "ditto" Bruce's comments about the Oscar-nominated (for "The Boy Friend") Peter Maxwell Davies. He did a brilliant job on that film.

Peter Maxwell Davies' work on The Boy Friend was and is spectacular - incredible orchestrations and arrangements.
And for those of us predisposed toward THE DEVILS, his contribution there is chilling and essential.

Amazing, after so many years, the appearance of the Tommy Tune video. Just like that. Really amazing. Way to go, BK! :)

I wish the rain would take a break for an hour, and the sun would come out. I want a nice walk, not one where I am drenched.

Rainy all day here as well DR JANE.

Hello All:
BK,
Keep up the good work!!!
-
Pondering dinner. My friend fighting cancer is visiting tomorrow and I have some Finale work to offer him. He has a CAT scan this week and another round with his oncologist next week. Please keep those prayers and vibes for him coming!
-
Rainy all day here as well DR JANE.
The sky cleared up a bit so off we went. It didn't last long and eventually we had hard rain/hail coming down. Just as we approached our home the sun came out.
-
We still ended our walk. At least I got out. Yesterday's walk was in the market while shopping.
-
This Donald Trump situation scares the crap out of me. I don't know if I'm back in Chicago, 1968, or Berlin, 1930. His pledges of allegiance by violent, vicious thugs, his Nazi saluters who support a candidate pushing violence, calling a college student protestor a member of ISIS and ugliness to those opposing him are so abominable. The fact that they are blindly following this neo-Hitler who seems to have no defined political platform between bullshit and violence really has me rattled.

DR elmore I hate to encourage a discussion on politics here, however, you might find this interesting. http://www.vox.com/2016/3/1/11127424/trump-authoritarianism

Back from a brief meet and greet and finalizing the set, which I think is going to work really well. Fun to see BJ Clark again after all these years. I think they're a good group, more focused than the few entitled troublemakers we had in Abner - of course once they saw how the audience loved the show, they were all suddenly thrilled to be in it. But this group seems happy to be there and I know we'll have fun. I recorded each of their voices singing happy birthday - all on pitch! :)
-
Eating a big salad of veggies after a few little drummettes.
-
Funny stuff on the Glenn Miller group - and great when you have the guy who did the restoration sitting with the actual recording logs that have all the information that clearly state MONO. They somehow think because Miller did a separate track of his trombone solos so the engineers would have control over it in the film's MONO mix, somehow they think when you place that against the MONO orchestra track and put some reverb on it and move the trombone to the right channel that that's real stereo - it ain't.
-
Well, I'm off to the call-backs!
Be back later!
-
Isn't there a way to "save" or download from You Tube - I can't remember exactly.
-
Jane, BTW, you were at our house for dinner sometime in 71 and we at yours in 71 or early 72.

I remember that well. We went to your house for dinner before we moved to the valley. You had an "exciting" day as your darling daughter had a fall (?) and needed a trip to the emergency room. All was well by the time we arrived and the dinner was delicious.
After we moved you went to our place for brunch.

BK: Google "YouTube downloader". I have a couple of them, and captured that okay.
-
Okay, now I have one. :)
It's called "Free YouTube Video Downloader 7.0" by AVN MEDIA.
I had one called YTD something that failed to work, and I uninstalled it. I hadn't used it in a while, and that can happen with YouTube downloaders. Either YouTube will change things to defeat them, or the company marketing them will try forcing you to upgrade to a paid version. When that happens, nuke it and try another one. This AVN one has been good.
-
Can you burn me a DVD of it?
-
Sure, if I can figure out what needs to be done. Would you be playing it on a regular DVD player?
Do DVD players read MP4 (I'm guessing not) or does it need to be converted to MPEG or something? I'll bet George knows the answer to this. But I'll play around with it.
-
I'm downloading a DVD maker program that should do the conversion and burning. Pray for Rosemary's Baby.

You'll have a lot of stuff to write about in the liner notes.

I've been reading THE GOLDFINCH and wishing I had not waited so long to read it.
-
San Antonio is launching another citywide book read. The latest title is "The Book Thief," which I think is a good choice. In the few years that they've done this, the city has read "To Kill a Mockingbird," "The House on Mango Street," which was written by a former San Antonian, Sandra Cisneros, and another book written by a San Antonian about his family (I can't remember the title, but it was good memoir).

I loved that book. Great stuff. Long, but wonderful. Like a 21st century Dickens novel.
-
I have been examined and have purchased for $608 my new glasses, which should be ready by the end of the week.
Oh goodness.
-
Thank you, DR Ginny!
Not only that, but I sat here and MADE myself figure out how to preserve the big moment.
Let's see if this will paste in decently....
Congratulations on your new plateau!
-
Thank you, vixmom!

Can you burn me a DVD of it?
Been trying. I have thus far been defeated by a lack of clear instruction on accomplishing this with applications that are already on my computer. This takes but a couple of minutes when you know what you're doing. I'm trying to achieve that level of enlightenment.

Vibes and vibes and more vibes for Ginny

Dinner tonight was leftover meatloaf

I had no pie on pi day

I didn't either. Bummer.

Good night, all.

Isn't there a way to "save" or download from You Tube - I can't remember exactly.
BK, you can go to keepvid.com (http://keepvid.com/), paste the YouTube URL into DOWNLOAD box and you'll get a list of different file options to download.
-
I just remembered that I set my DVR to record "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill." Did anyone else watch or record this?
-
It looks like it's going to be shown a couple more times, at least.

And as for burning to DVD, I downloaded this free program and it can burn to DVD "over 45 file formats" without having to manually convert them to anything else.

The DVD menu options are very limited, but it works pretty well, and I've never gotten any spam e-mail or virus because of it...well, so far.

I am only 22% into the book and, sofar, agree with you.

Oh, Good Evening!
-
Sandy has chemo tomorrow.
-
I told him to be sure and pick up some pot for the side effects.
-
SIX
-
Howdy, 5 Guests!
-
I guess he doesn't sick from pot. I would be concerned about using it.
Of course, you could joking :)
-
Another rainy day today in Tacoma!
-

I wasn't joking.
-
I doubt he would want to smoke it, but he can get it in liquid form or even as edibles.
-
I lost four of my Guests.
-
I doubt he would want to smoke it, but he can get it in liquid form or even as edibles.
Sounds better, I guess.
-
I know people say it helps.
-
Ithink it would make me sick ;D
-
Vibes to Sandy tomorrow.
-
Apparently, it cuts some of the nausea.
-
Did you have the heavy winds yesterday?
-
66 mph was our strongest gust in Tacoma.
-
Apparently, it cuts some of the nausea.
Very good. I hope he feels better tomorrow.
-
I don't think it has been as windy here as in Tacoma.
-
I think I can sleep.
-
I think I can sleep.
Yeah, I have that effect on people!
-
Ithink it would make me sick ;D
I've never taken any pot. And I would never choose to smoke it. I don't like smoking in general, and the smell of pot makes me want to vomit on the ground. :P

That is why I said that Sandy wouldn't want to smoke it.

George, how did your callback go?
I thought it went well enough. There might be another group going tomorrow, but I don't yet know if I would need to go back again, or if it'll be another group.

Oh, well.
