Title: MY FAIR LADY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were fair, and now it is time for you to post until the fair cows come home.

After last night's performance of "The Credeaux Canvas," several of us went to a local sports bar to hang out and chat.  We went to this place because it was felt that it wouldn't be too crowded (it wasn't) and there would be enough room for everyone (there was).

Today, the family is getting together at my parents' house for tacos and game playing.  I'm sure some chocolate will also be consumed, but after the tacos, not with the chocolate.

I have done the show, and usually I am painfully aware of the length of an act.

I'd been looking forward to reports on whatever this MY FAIR LADY was up to.  And BK does not disappoint.

This is hopefully a bit of an exaggeration, but it seems like it's "business as usual" for an awful lot of theater groups around L.A. to use tracks.  I know I'm not yer typical audience member -- I'm probably not yer typical musician, either -- but the artificiality of live production over tracks is something I can't adapt to.

If a group can't hire a band, I would honestly rather hear some schmoe keeping it simple -- and keeping it live -- by pounding it out (really well, of course) on a piano.  And if a young kids' production can't hire even that much and must use tracks, I'd rather have that kept to scale and the tracks be of a small band than of a full professional orchestra.  (There's a MUSIC MAN production on YouTube that's a bunch of tiny kids acting/singing over what could be the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics combined, which is jarring and, for my taste, wholly inappropriate.)

Let's just be grateful that people are indeed still sticking to book in a book musical like MY FAIR LADY.  BK's post-apocalyptic vision will come true soon enough, and hopefully we'll all be gone when it does.

My goodness, that was a long post.  And I'm still working on my first cup of coffee.

If I'd split it up properly, we'd be on page fifty-three now.

Today, for my own whoring contribution to the artificiality and downgrading of landmark musical scores, I'll be programming my "synth string" setups for GYPSY.  In my defense, this is for a small community theater company who can hire a band, but not a full orchestra -- and their band size for this show will be twelve, as opposed to a more typical four to six, utilizing excellent reeds and brass players, so I am their only compromise.  And it will all be live, baby.  Live.

I shall also take a tiny step further into the 21st Century by learning the basics of annotation in ForScore on the iPad.  The iPad is where this string reduction resides, and rather than take the easy route of printing it out, this shall be my debut playing off it, complete with pedal page-turning, etc.  By God, if Boswell can do it for Kritzerland, then DR ChasSmith can take a stab at it for a li'l production in the park.

To those who celebrate, Happy Easter felicitations!  This was always my least favorite holiday in the Christian calendar for  so many reasons, but to spare the true believers, I'll only deal with family hypocrisy, which - after ignoring a year of Sunday services - compelled my mother's family, all brothers and sisters and their children, to dress up and attend a long service and then spend the day in a huge and long reunion. It was hell.

On a positive side, my mother's Easter ham with scalloped potatoes was always a winner.

Why did Jesus first tell a woman that he had risen?

DR CHAS SMITH we do not use tracks at our theatre.  BUT in this neck of the woods, pianists are difficult to find.  We now are at the point of auditions next Sunday, and no pianist for the first 11 rehearsals to follow.  We have asked several people.  It's the main reason I don't like to direct a musical here....you can't get a piano player.

You would think in a college town, ONE person would say yes.

Our pianist is doing a show at the local high school.  Everyone we ask says no....eventually....usually after leaving us hanging for several days....so I can see why some groups just say.....to hell with it.....

Good morning. The breakfast went off with only two hitches: the service was much shorter than they thought it would be (although everyone was patient and chatted while we finished getting everything ready) and someone had turned off the pilot light to one of the ovens -- we planned on baking the bacon and sausage in both ovens at the same time.

The Excedrin PM worked really well and other than being groggy this is the first morning (or afternoon now) that I didn't wake up with a raging headache.

How much does does it cost to have a real pianist and a real piano?

Well, we were planning to do brunch at a restaurant at the lake. It's pricey but it's what Sam and her DH like so we had reservations for 10 of us.   I drove the 100 plus miles to get there and got a text from S's DH saying they wouldn't be going to brunch/dinner because of a big family fight the night before. Argument, is really what I'm sure it was but it apparently started between S and her mom and then the DH had too much and he blew up.   Not knowing if I was just going to turn around and drive home, I called my brother. Luckily my brother, his wife and mom and dad were on their way so we still had Brunch/dinner with the 5 of us  Then we stopped to check on mom and dad's cottage and then I came home.  4 hours in the car and 1 1/2 hours with family, lol

I do not know what the disagreements were about, I do not wish to know.   Mom and I sort of did a high five because for the first time we can remember no one was blaming either of us for anything.   We had a pleasant enough brunch and I got home about 2 1/2 hours earlier than I expected.   I assume they'll all work it out, they always do.  But at least mom and I aren't to blame :)

It was cold last night and the cat was back in the window well this morning.  I quick got dressed and took out some dry food, but it was gone before I could get the food out there.   The food is still there.  I'll be curious to see if it's there in the morning.  If it's gone it could be another animal that gets it, I won't really know.   The cat must be getting food somewhere because it never waits around for food or to try to get food

Congrats on not getting blamed ;)

Better they didn't go then fight at the restaurant.  This way the rest of you had a good time.

I agree, but I doubt they would have fought at the restaurant.  I do think it may have been tense

Tense can ruin the evening, and you drive so far to get there.

True, but it was a lovely day for a drive.  I didn't mind.

Watching Indiscreet with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. I haven't seen this in at least 20 years, but I remember having the same feeling then: It should be much better than it is, but it's; fun at least watching the two of them.

Beautiful service with string choir, brass choir, bell choir and "choir" choir... Packed house with everyone dressed beautifully... I always love to see the little girls in their dresses and Easter hats and the boys with their little suits and ties... There was a plethora of fedoras on the little boys this year as well... And they are always so pleased when you compliment hem on their outfits

Came home and peeled and halved 8 lbs of white mushrooms while sautéing a couple of vidalvia  onions in butter Then threw the mushrooms in in batches and then as each batch cooked transferred them to the slow cooker with some sherry and Beef stock... This send a couple of bottles of wine were my only required contributions to Easter dinner

My sister in law made up a buffet and served broiled flounder stuffed with crabmeat ( which I did not try), ham, prime rib, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts with crushed pecans, green beans with bacon, my mushrooms, my moms cauliflower casserole, bread rolls, these little spinach pastry things she makes with phyllo and spinach filling.....

For "The HEAD! That Wouldn't DIE!!" last December, we had to use pre-recorded tracks...there wasn't enough room in the space for musicians.  In Janary, we did use live musicians for the fund raiser.

I'm up, I'm up - other than being up for an hour at five-thirty, I think I got nine hours.  Unfortunately at five-thirty I almost threw up (but didn't) and that really trashed my throat from coughing.  Hopefully that will go away quickly but it feels trashed right now. The Excedrin PM worked really well and other than being groggy this is the first morning (or afternoon now) that I didn't wake up with a raging headache.

After reading the Notes, I was wondering why theaters use tracks at all--other than cost. JRand's situation hadn't occurred to me; I hope that pianists aren't difficult to find elsewhere.

How much does does it cost to have a real pianist and a real piano?

The problem with that is that most non-profit community theaters would want instrumentalists to volunteer their time like everyone else involved in non-profit community theater, but the instrumentalists won't.  It's their job. :-\

Today, the family is getting together at my parents' house for tacos and game playing.  I'm sure some chocolate will also be consumed, but after the tacos, not with the chocolate.

WHAT?! No chocolate tacos?? A good, ole American tradition.

No chocolate tacos.  Sounds good, though!  We did have chocolate creme pie.  It was store-bought, but very good

This morning, I was channel surfing on TV and came across "The Full Monty" and just started watching it.  I looked around the DVR program guide to see what was coming on later and I noticed a show on AXS TV (never noticed the channel before) that was on today that said it was a musical, so I recorded it.  It's called Last Night a DJ Saved My Life (http://www.lastnightadj.com).  It's a live production that stars and wa executive produced by David Hasselhoff and features songs from the 80s.  Here's the description from the website:
Quote
The Hoff, plays Ross, a hilarious hedonist. He’s Ibiza’s top 80’s DJ who doesn’t realize a new decade has dawned, disco is out, a new club scene is in.

He tries to keep up with the times and with Mandy, his new younger girl-friend (Kim Tiddy, from ‘The BillHollyoaks’), but matters are complicated when his teenage daughter Penny (Stephanie Webber From TV’s ‘The Voice’) arrives to stay. Father and daughter haven’t seen each other for three years, since a messy divorce. No longer a demure school girl, but a wild child who quickly falls for Rik, the holiday rep (Shane Richie Junior).

It’s the story of two generations colliding, as a badly behaved parent, tries to control a wild child teenager! This hilarious hit fest is also a touching father and daughter drama, set against the holiday island background of Ibiza!

Firstly, it's not funny in the least.  Secondly, no one (especially "The Hoff") can act, at all.  The singers (except "The Hoff") have good voices but it's just a big giant mess.  The songs make no sense and the "book" is a joke, and not in the good way.  I wonder if they wanted to make something like "Mamma Mia" where the audience would like the music and forgive everything that's lacking.

Avoid this like the plague! :P

George would understand when I say that the storms were both located where I-90 and Hwy 18 merge near Issaquah.  Basically we were traveling several hundred feet below Snoqualmie Pass where they were experiencing an unexpected snowstorm that dumped 8 inches of snow and thus closing the pass.
