DR JohnG, I have Jack Viertel's book, and he signed it for me at last week's sitzprobe. I have not read much of it yet, but I'm enjoying it.

Its approach seems pretty much based on Lehman Engel's wonderful books and the BMI workshop, which Engel began, but unlike a lot of musical theatre books it's tempered by his personal observations from seeing a lot of musicals in their original Broadway runs over the past 50 years.  Unlike a lot of theory-but-no-practice musical theatre book authors, he's been in the trenches.

The audience was right with them, eating up every line.

I picked it up last night when I should have been sleeping and devoured about 30 pages without realizing it. He goes over some of the same ground that Engel does, but the writing is better, even if I don't agree with some of his opinions. And I like the fact that I don't agree with him all the time.

Another Thursday.

My doctor called me just before 4 p.m. yesterday and changed more prescriptions.  So, I went to the pharmacy to pick them up. Once home, I hauled everything out and threw out the old and replaced with the new.

I was very tired last night and decided to lie down on my bed around 7:30 p.m.  Woke up at 12:34 a.m.  Went back to bed and woke up at 5:36 a.m.

I'm blaming my new meds cocktail for the sudden attack of sleepiness.   Will know the truth of it today as I proceed here at work.  Thus far, I feel fine.

I'm also a bit concerned about a replacement 1099-R from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  It was ordered a week ago Monday.  Received an e-mail late Monday afternoon (March 21) saying my request had been processed.  I thought that meant it has been mailed.

You wouldn't know it, though, given the sluggish mail delivery we've been experiencing recently here in Oakland CA.

I just took a little break skimming through reaction to "1776" on the chat boards.  It's positively amazing what people will get hung up on sometimes, to the detriment of their own appreciation for the whole.  Lots of pros and cons on this one!
Title: Re: A FOND FAREWELL TO MARCH

Casting, costuming, direction, it all comes under fire among the raves which are plentiful as well.  I'm very interested in what the reviews have in store.

One very interesting thing to me is several people commenting on the volume of the orchestra.  It did indeed seem a bit low in comparison to that of the last several productions I've seen.  I don't refer to the playing, but to the engineered balance which always seems very controlled but well executed at Encores!  Specifically, at the two shows last year for which I heard the rehearsal in the beautiful tight acoustics at the studio, all that wonderful power was there as well at City Center.  In "1776" that power was likewise magnificent in the studio, but seemed a bit too controlled last night.  Again, I don't mean their playing at all, just the amplification levels balancing orchestra and vocals.  Vocals were fine.

DR Elmore - if you think I'm off base in this critique, just say so.  I might not have even ventured to mention it if I hadn't seen that others had the same reaction.

What's really amusing is misinformation about the orchestrations, for which DR Elmore's corrections are a breath of fresh air.  It seems that Mr. Viertel's remarks may have left things a little unclear, complicated by wrong or incomplete information in the Suskin book.

I have to say piano too. I just love the sound of it and it even sounds good played all by itself. I've never been as big a fan of horns or strings individually - I have to hear them played all together to sound good.
I'd like to play the guitar too.
And drums or any percussion instrument look like an awful lot of fun. Unfortunately, I have a terrible sense of rhythm. I don't think I could even play the tambourine well.

Oy.  Can I choose more than one?  I look around me these days and see people -- not just pros, but local friends who dived into multiple instruments back when the diving was good for them -- and I very much wish I'd worked on at least a couple of others.

In high school for some reason I became interested in flute and piccolo, borrowed same from a friend who wasn't using hers at the time, picked up a fingering chart, figured out how to get a sound out of the damned thing, and played around with that for quite a while.  Haven't touched one since, and probably couldn't make a sound on it now to save my life, but to this day I can think through the fingering of something I'm hearing.

Prior to that, I became infatuated with drums, bought a cheapo set, and took some lessons.  That lasted about as long as the flute, and I didn't go very far with technical proficiency, but I'll bet you if I sat down at a set right now, the basic four-limb coordination for basic rhythms would still be accessible.

I've never had the slightest affinity for strings.  I have the ability to pick up an instrument and hand it to its owner without breaking anything, but that's as far as that goes.  So, this leaves us with winds and brass, and I would still love to just get familiar with a few such things.  Which won't do the world any good at all, so let's not push it...

I've heard from inside sources that the problem is the  sound person on this show.  it's not the ever-reliable Scott Lehrer who knows how to make an orchestra sound great and natural. The orchestra has to be miked because of their position on stage.  all the real sound gets lost in the flies.

Thursday afternoon greetings!  I helped Fr. Richard set up for his clergy study group, then made myself scarce this morning.  Visited the book sale site, where they finally allowed me in, to pick up a generous supply to bookmarks for us to hand out at First Friday tomorrow.  I looked around a bit and we have a great selection, beautifully organized.  Sale opens a week from tonight.  From there I went to Java Johnny's to meet a grantwriter friend for lunch.  She's someone who used to attend my programs at the Dayton library and who worked at the hospital where I was treated for my heart attack.  She just started working at our local Miami University campus.  Got home in time to say HI to the clergymen before their meeting ended.

When I was going to Western Washington University to be a choir teacher (and we all know how well that turned out ;) ), I had to take several classes on how to play instruments so that I would be able to teach those instruments (just in case we had to take over a band or orchestra).  I learned to play the clarinet, bassoon, tuba, French horn, and cello, which was my favorite.

DR Kate--you're too kind.  I just fake play the piano.  I was taught by an older gentleman who believed in short cuts.  He taught me how to play chords so I'd be able to play a song right away.  I only took lessons for about 9 months, I think.

As for singing voices, my father declared I didn't have one.  He heard me singing in our yard once when I was pruning shrubbery.  He just scoffed and said, "You can't sang!" (he indulged in countrified lingo from time to time).

Still, I enjoyed singing.   Signed up for choir when I went to college.  All you had to do was be there and you got a credit for combined semesters.

Then I got cast in a musical.  The music director was in charge of the college's "touring choir" (for which auditions brought some voice majors to their knees).  The music director was a professor for voice in the music department.

I "had" to audition for the play (because I was a theater major), and I talk-sang my way through "What Kind of Fool Am I?"   My right arm when numb about halfway through it.  I concentrated hard to remain on key, and when it was over I left the theater.  I later learned I had been asked to come back the next night.   I was cast as "Matt" in "The Fantasticks".   My father and mother were in the audience one night.   Never heard a negative word.  In fact, my father wanted to know if I wanted to audition for the North Carolina School of Performing Arts.   He said he had "no idea"....

At any rate, I didn't think I was any great shakes as Matt.  But one day, the music director asked me to come to the choir room at a specific time.  When I arrived, he introduced me as the "newest member" of the touring choir.  I was in heaven.

My friends in the regular choir hated my guts.   Some voice majors not in touring choir hated my guts.

I didn't care.  I still don't!!!

Instruments I play:  The B-flat clarinet (or is that "clarionet" as in "The Music Man"?)

Instruments I wish I played:  The violin, the piano and the French Horn.

How about the player piano?  You don't dream of being the player piano player?

Nah.  I want to tickle those ivories myself!

Well, it's time to go to the theater.  Our stage manager has a job in Tacoma this weekend, so she won't be there at the beginning of each show, but will show up when she gets there.

Until later!
