Title: THE ANNIVERSARY WALTZ
Post by: bk on November 08, 2004, 11:58:54 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you are dressed to the nines or, at the very least, dressed to the tens, you are ready to partay, you are ready to shake your bootay, and you are ready to post until the waltzing cows come home.

What an honor! The first to say HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!
And I bet I'll be the only one saying it from Budapest.

A great site, a wonderful group of people. Congrats to bk for being the perfect host - down to his exquisite taste in lounging pajamas. And a pat on the back to us all for being the swell gang that we are.

Now I must get going on my day and flit about like an untainted Hungarian paprika high on the Spice of Life. I must be sweet like a slice of dobos torta and tasty like a Wiener Schnitzel hanging over the plate.

CONGRATS!

I've just come back from washing my hair and realizing that - strangely enough - it's an anniversary for me personally, as well. It was exactly one year ago today, on November 9th, that I arrived back in Los Angeles to start my life all over again.

Post No 3?  Usually, I'm around No. 10 or so.  I'm up early because I have my first session of physical therapy to work out the pinched nerve in my back that was inhibiting my walking during July and August.   I forgot to reschedule yesterday, and I don't want to lose this, so I'm going in.

DRPanni, Happy Anniversary to you!

I owe my presence on this site to that beautiful lady and singer Liz Callaway, who mentioned to me last August, while we were putting some things together for a pops symphony night, that she'd spoken to Bruce Kimmel.  Bruce and I had been out of contact since around 2001; I'd gone off to London on a project for The Packard Humanities Foundation on early American Musical Theatre and come back to find that Bruce was going through a bad patch.   I have a memory of speaking at least once to Bruce during the reign of terror, but he was in his battles on the West Coast and I was on the East Coast with my own angst.  One of the best things about 2001 was that a friend gave me his castoff Mac and I had my first computer.

After seeing Liz, I checked out the HHW site, and I sent Bruce an email about how happy I was to see him surviving and writing novels(!).  I ordered the first Kritzer book in paper from Barnes & Noble, and read it.

Because I'm a lazy slob, I tend to do a group emailing on holidays, so when "Happy Thanksgiving" came along, I sent the email to Bruce since I now had an email address for him.  I don't think he got the mass mail of "Turn back your clock!"  I got an email back asking if I'd do an HHW Unseemly Interview, and of course I said yes.    I don't remember when it showed up in my email.  I believe it was around the first of January.

Once the interview went up, I started lurking out of vanity, to see what comments it got.  I decided to use elmore as my monniker since it really is my initial and last name, and the 3003 was the address on Goldman Avenue where I lived most of the first 30 years of my life.  Suddenly I was hooked and I decided to jump in and post.  This year's long health crunch was made bearable by so much support and care from this site, and it's amazing how people I might never have met -particularly Jane, Danise, Panni, Penny, td, Michael Shayne, Michael Barnum, Ben, Noel, Tomovoz, Jay, Francois, DanInToronto - are people I've come to regard as close friends.  If I've missed someone, please forgive me.  I look forward to meeting Jose tomorrow, and I hope I'll continue to meet other acquaintances from this site on our treks in and out of New York.

Well, it looks as if I'm a one-man frenzy this morning.  I checked out all the postings that happened last night after I signed off, and I thought I was the only person unimpressed with 2001: A SPACE ODDITY!  I do believe that if I had to chose betwen watching it again or having my hands cut off, I'd learn to write with my feet.

GEORGY GIRL was a favorite film of mine in the 1960s, and I remember how much I liked the score.  I don't believe it's on DVD, but I'd like to see it again.
Yes DRtd, GWTW is one of my favorite films as well.  Frankly, my dear, I do give a damn.  About GWTW and HHW!

Yes, I am here and glad to be (here).

Happy Anniversary to us all and especially BK.

I found this place because of my obsession with listening to internet radio while at work. I was looking for stations that played some show music and happened upon the archives of the "site that shall not be named" not knowing any of the story. I listened to all the archives (which didn't take a lot of time because I listened to more than one a day) and then started my search again. I think I looked specifically for Mr. Feltham and, lo and behold, I found HHW (the old site). I lurked for a while and my first post was on a Wednesday Ask BK day. It was about the casting of Miss Bernadette Peters in the role of Mama Rose. Oh, how time flies. I now come every day for a romp in the internet. I've met some wonderful people and hope to meet more of you.

Well, I must be off now to practice writing in the style of Mr. BK. We have a job to do and I, for one, will not shirk my duty.

P.S. Hi, Larry. Hope you're feeling better. Tomorrow, tomorrow, I'll see ya tomorrow, it's only a day away!

3 years?!?!?!?!?!? Is that possible?  Are you sure we just din't (for all you Ricky Ricardo fans) take some quantum leap into another dimension or the future?  And yet, I feel like I've known some of you for much longer than that.

Congratulstions to everyone-- but especially to Bruce, Donald, and the ever elusive (but nevertheless cute) Mr. Mark Bakalor.

You guys are all family-- how can it only be three years?  And yet, it was just yesterday, so how could three years have gone by?

Happy Anniversar(ies)!!!

I have exactly thirty seconds before guilt sets in over not getting on a bus to get to school for my first class on time, so I will regale you with my HHW-reminiscenses (no time to check the spelling of THAT) sometime this afternoon.

My parents left this morning for Saint Lauderdale and a cruise of the Panama Canal... it's just me, my little sister and my grandmother for ten glorious days (GIRLS GONE WILD!!!)

Can I get some generic metal health vibes for a friend?  (THAT came out of nowhere, eh?)

Last night DR td wrote: "I believe that BK has stated that he never really liked GONE WITH THE WIND (If I'm wrong, correct me), but are there any other fans of it on this most popular of websites other than ME? ? ?"

Another one right here! I am heading out in a few minutes to pick up the new set at Target which has a lower price than anywhere else including Deep Discount.

I put the old DVDs into the player about a month ago, and they looked astounding to me. I cannot imagine how Ultra-Resolution is going to improve what looked to be a pristine picture to me. I am also excited to finally get that outstanding documentary "The Making of GONE WITH THE WIND" on DVD as part of this set. I find myself watching that documentary (taped off TCM years ago) more often than the film!

Happy anniversary to one and all.

Hmmmm....three years.  It seems longer.  I recall I was in my office at CAMI cruising around the internet while eating my lunch, and decided to click on the link for Sondheim.com that was posted on Broadway.com.  I read it with interest, and remember reading a column entitled "The Real A."  It seems to me that it was about this time that I continued clicking through to a site called "Haines His Way." But according to the anniversary being celebrated today, it doesn't seem possible, because I left CAMI in May of 2000.  Perhaps it was the previous incarnation of this here site.  I next worked at a job at which cruising the internet was ...well, not possible, but returned to a theatrically minded job in January of 2001, where I believe I returned to HHW, which I believe was still in its previous format.  It was at that permutation of this here site that I do recall winning a trivia contest.  The answer was Scott Jacoby.

Then came my move to Rochester, and my job search, and I knew that this most addictive site would need to wait for my reappearance until I felt more settled.  I started my job in mid-January and I see that I re-joined the human race (oooh, a HELLO, DOLLY! reference) on 16 March of this year.  The rest is history.  History?  History! (oooh, a sort of WIZARD OF OZ reference!)

I will let my brother tell you how he found this here site.  ;)

But again, hearty felicitations to all who post and lurk.

DR JRand - your post about the soon-to-be ex-brother-in-law made me cry.  And, to agree with you and relate it to the topic-of-the-day, I had a similar reaction to the losses in the Kritzer books.  I can't stand change, or any kind - or is it just loss?  DW Joy will recall that, a few weeks ago, I shed tears over the fact that our local copy shop had closed its doors.  It was there I met fellow musical theatre scribe Tom Jones, who used it too.  The copy store owner introduced us.  I guess the prospect of not seeing my sister's husband again is also deeply upsetting to me, I love him so much.  There have been divorcing couples where - well, I'll give an example: I was a friend of the bride, and the marriage lasted about 15 months.  I said to the husband: if you two are dividing up friends, I'm going with you.  Of course, one can't do that with sisters!

I've been breaking into tears a lot lately.

I, too, enjoyed Donald's show elsewhere.  But I can't really recall how I learned of this here site.  Probably through rec.arts.theatre.musicals (I still read ratm pretty often).  Congratulations on three years.  (Now the verse to What Did I Ever See In Him? is going through my mind.)

Tonight's Joy's opening.  4000 seats have been sold out for weeks.  Waiting list for returned tickets - several hundred.  Cast of 30+  Tap dancers, tumblers, bumblers... and a happy ending, of course.

I was steered towards this sight by a wonderful fella named DR JRand54. He urged me to check it out and so I finally did...and then I never left! Last night I hied me to the Woods of Holly to have dinner at Musso & Frank's with the lovely Leelee Sobieski.  That girl can put away rolls!  I asked the waiter for more during one of Leelee's frequent trips to the ladies room.  Why is there no apostrophe in ladies room?  Sounds as if you'd open the door and there would have to be a whole bunch of ladies there.  Or a slew.  Have you ever opened a door and encountered a slew of ladies?  How about a lady of slew?  Lady of Spain, I adore you.  Does anybody have a clew as to what I'm talking about?

Anywho, said waiter made a mistake and brought me two Combination Louies?  Now, that doesn't look right.  What's the plural of Louie?  Anyway, I paid for them both and took one home because there's nothing in my refrigerator in the home environment except Diet Coke and they look like they're lonely for Louie.

I think I'll title these notes Lonely for Louies, except that plural looks like it's spelled wrong.  I informed Miss Leelee Sobielski that it's a good thing Mr. Bruce Lee died before she was born, because then she might have married him and become Leelee Lee.  She told me she doesn't care for Kung-Fu fighting, or fighting of any kind.  Damn them all.  Damn them all to hell.

Happy Third Anniversary to HHW.

I found out about this place on another message board. I happened to write in a post that I loved the series of compilations that Bruce had produced (UNSUNG SONDHEIM, UNSUNG MUSICALS, etc.) and mentioned how heartsick I was that he was no longer at that place-that-will-not-be-mentioned. A person responding to my message directed me here which was great because I had asked folks like Ken Mandelbaum what Bruce was doing now, and they had no answers.

Thanks DRNOEL and DRMBARNUM!  I appreciate your thoughts (and MR BK's yesterday).

Hmmmmmmmmm.....I came to this site courtesy of DR JMK - he had mentioned my name in a post (on the old board) concerning something about Frances Farmer (no surprise there).  And it seemed like a fun place, so I started posting, and there we are.  I have been here ALMOST every day since!

I have directed some people (in addition to MBARNUM) here, but they don't seem to get the message.  Oh well!  There are lots of wonderful people here - including MR BK and the honchos - plus so many wonderful posters that I hope to meet someday!

Popped into Target today and got GWTW (also FRIENDS, Season 8) and though I won't attempt to watch the whole movie today, I will slip the first disc in the player to see what it looks like. As I said last night, I can't see how this 65 year old movie could look much better than it already does on DVD, but we'll see.

I enjoy GWTW, oh yes I do.  What the hell am I talking about?  I'm talking about GWTW, that is WTWG backwards.  It's a motion picture with motion and some delicious performances.  Oh yes, I read the book, and the actors were so spot on in their characterizations.  What a spot was doing on their characterizations, I do not know, but there it was.

And as for 2001:An Space Odyssey - I saw it on the big screen and didn't like it.  No, I didn't like it back in the stone age of the late 1960's.  But I saw it again (in widescreen) on DVD - and I appreciate it more.  In fact, I do like it....I do, I do!  (Oh a Mary Martin reference.)

Happy Anniversary HHW!  And thanks to all the wonderful people here who make my day a little brighter and increase my knowledge on so many subjects - well....what else can I say?

My parents left this morning for Saint Lauderdale ...

The esteemed Fort thanks you for the beatification, and I thank you for giving me an excuse to post this from FNC (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,137865,00.html):

Quote
A Church of England school in London has been told that a new school it is helping to build and manage cannot carry the name of a Christian saint because it might offend people of other faiths, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The scrap is over the name of a high school to be built in Islington. Local officials want to absorb the existing St. Mary Magdalene Church of England Primary School into a new City Academy, but don’t want to keep the name of the old school on the new one.

The church, which is contributing two million pounds toward the new facilities, would rather keep the existing name, which has stood since 1710.

Just think if this catches on! We'll be re-naming 25% of Canada and at least 50% of California. The St. Lawrence seaway will become "Larry's Ditch", and the San Andreas fault will become "Andy's Booboo". New York's cathedral will be"Patty's Place". I can just hear Tony crooning "I Left My Heart in Frankietown".

der Brucer (and this post gives you all a chance to play along and make this anniversay day a Frenzy - a Fabulous Frenzy, I say! A real Frantic, Fabulous, Frenzy. But do take care, we don't want a Fershluginuh Frenzy. But. then again, if you do take care, we shall be left careless, and we shall make many errors, and then the whole thread will be  fercockt.  Oh G-d! I'm goying mad!)

Where in tarnation is everybody?  Unless you Wussburgers get off your butt cheeks and start posting there will be some bitch-slapping around here.  Yes indeed, our anniversary partay will become a bitch-splapping partay.

Did you know that partay spelled backwards is yatrap?  Perhaps we should have a yatrap instead of a partay.  What other web site has a thrid anniversary yatrap?  Only us, that's who.  That is because we are the grooviest, the ginchiest, the most popular, the chickest chicest chiquest web sit on the entire internet.  We're the pants on a Roxy usher, we are.  We're camembert.  We're Mickey Mouse.

Did anyone notice that I typed thrid instead of third?  Or am I losing the thrid of the conversation?  Do I have some silver thrids among the gold?  Does anyone know what the hell I'm talking about?  If so, please let me know.

I think I shall call today's notes The Thrid Anniversary Yatrap.

And now I must hie me on my way.  I must see people, I must do things, I must consume foodstuffs, and I must prepare for the yatrap.  The tender yatrap.

Let us have scads and scads of lovely postings, shall we?

Now everybody is asking "Is it really three years already?", and I am asking, "Is it only three years?"  I mean, I don't know what I did with my life before the good Mr. Haines established this here site, I really don't.  How on earth did I get through 9/11/01  without my fellow DR's, for example?

I was a Big A fan back in the Big A days.  And then of course I read BK's column on the Site That Dare Not Speak Its Name.  Someone posted on a list-srever I frequent that BK was no longer with ---------- ----------, and I asked, how can that be, since BK is ---------- ----------?  And I think they directed me here.  And here I'll stay with you.  Oh, a Love Life reference!

I'll have to say that this site meant the world to me last March, when my Joe was incarcerated, and his mom passed away.  The daily postings by all of the lovely people here helped me to get through it all, do what I had to do, and maintain my faith in the goodness of humanity in the face of hard-hearted people and just plain evil people.  For that I love you all.

My appearances here have been sporadic of late, partly because we are still dealing with the fall-out from that time.  But I do not miss a Notes, and I do not miss a post.

Hearty congratulations to Dear BK and all the Dear Readers out there in the dark who have made www.haineshisway.com the ginchiest--and almost most popular--web site in all of internetdom.

It was Dear Reader/Dear Brother Stuart who introduced me to HHW.com soon after it was launched, and for that I am most grateful!

Other aspects of HHW for which I am grateful:

--The splendid friendships I have gained and developed here, both on-line and in person.

--The wonderful humor that can be found here without fail.  In particular, I treasure the belly aches I get from laughing as hard as I do on any of those occasions when Dear BK asks us to come up with a Worst Cast Scenario.

--The wealth of knowledge I have picked up here, some of it rather arcane.

--Without HHW, I'd have gone through life not knowing who Allison Hayes was or what she looked like.  (Imagine that!)

There's much more I could say (Oh.  A "Mr. Wonderful" reference.), and perhaps I shall a little later on.

Now someone in here has to defend 2001:  A Space Odyssey.

It was back in 1968, I believe, that I traveled from Madison WI to Boston and NYC to visit some college friends.  My New York friend insisted that we must see the new science fiction movie.  I was less than enthusiastic, being a devotée of "sf novels" and having a snobbish disdain for "sci-fi" movies.  There were pictures on the subway posters of men in space suits on the Moon.  I did not want to go.  But I went.

Well, for me 2001 was something akin to a religious experience, in Cinerama, in the original cut I believe, before it was shortened a bit.

Thereafter, I tried to see it in as many locations as I could.  I went with friends when it opened in Milwaukee.  I saw it in San José when I visited my brother's family.  I dragged my parents to it in Dallas.  ("Religious!" exclaimed my born-again fundamentalist mother.  "I thought it was anti-religious!  All that evolution stuff.")  I saw it on a ship off the coast of Senegal.  I saw it on an airplane.

I saw it last month on cable.  Sure the special effects pale next to today's bells and whistles.  In fact the star journey, which was the gosh! wow! part when it came out, is decidedly amateur-night now.  But the film holds up for me, as--who posted here?--more like a piece of music, a tone poem, than a story.  Don't look for narrative.  Look for mood and, well, if I may use the term, philosophy, Clarke's Weltanschauung.  Whis is not a breed of dog, I might add.

In any case, that's where I stand on the film, but à chacun son gout, which is French for "horse race".

I hesitate to tell the story of how I got at this here site because it shows a rather unpleasant side of my personality.  But tell it I shall.  I remember it as if it were yesterday...

Anyway, I was searching and yahooing and googling the name of a certain cretin who posts with alarming frequency and venom on rec.arts.theatre.musicals in the hopes of digging up some kind of sordid dirt with which I could use to drive him away.  No such luck.  But among my searches, I did find mention of this a**hole's name in the archives of HHW (being bandied by people who were discussing him with as much distain as I had for him.)  As I read through the posts, I found that the non-cretin discussions were interesting and informative and that the people who posted were losts of fun and very nice, too.  I lurked for about a few days and realized that I wanted in.  This was the kind of community that was sorely lacking at r.a.t.m., and it was exactly what I was looking for.  I signed up and joined the partay!

Oy...

Can you all tell that I posted this morning in a rush AND with little time for my large cup of coffee to fully sink in?

First off - FORT Lauderdale.  Sheesh.  I must have gotten it and Saint Augustine messed up in my, sadly, US Geography-less brain.  I can't imagine Quebec maps without the "Saints".  Especially the made-up saints for which rural quebec is famous for.  One website lists a couple choice ones:

St-Jean-Chrysostome-de-Russelltown
St-Louis-de-Haha
St-Stanislas-de-Koska
St-Malachie-d'Ormstown
St-Patrice-de-Sherrington
Ste-Agnes-de-Dundee
Ste-Emilie-d'Energie

My favourite is St-Louis-de-Haha by a long shot.

Second point, MENTAL not METAL vibes.  Sheesh sheesh sheesh.

I came to this fair site after first getting linked here by DR Jennifer on another website.

Then I lurked in on a chat for a short while and the rest is history.

My favourite moments from HHW were definitely caused by our "Mary, Merry, Marry" discussion. :)

He talked to DR Jose yesterday via the tellyphone, so hopefully Jose will drag Jason to one or more hhw get-togethers while he is here, to which alas I shall not come.

Well, I wasn't about to dare try to imitiate BK's unique style and I'm certainly not after Noel's and William "F." Orr's excellent pastiches.

I came to this site because I happened to walk into my favourite bookstore the day Mr. Bruce Kimmel was doing a reading of the Krtizer books.  I had actually met him earlier in this same bookstore years ago (different location) where we had traded compliments and went our merry ways like ships in the night.  I had seen his books being promoted in the store and certainly recognized the name, being so familiar with his records and owning so many of them.  But anyway, here I was in the store and, for those of you who have read the books and enjoyed them, to hear them being read by Mr. Kimmel is  an even  greater joy.

After the reading, I purchased the books, had him sign them, and re-introduced myself.  He said I should do an unseemingly interview, we traded emails, I went home and began perusing the site.  Within a week, I think I had done the interview.  And shortly after that, I began posting.

I thank you, but again I will remind you I am William F. Orr, and I have never been a producer for Warner Brothers.  When your close personal friend Harlan Ellison met me he asked, "Are you related to Bill Orr?" to which I replied, "I am him."

I am also not the Christian theologian that keeps coming up on Google searches of my name.

In any case, thank you again for the compliment, DR Edward Pogue.  Oh, a Kevin Sorbo reference!

Good afternoon all

Wow, has it truly been three years?  To be honest, I do not know exactly when I first started reading here at HHW.  I was brought here, of course, by DR Jed.  He had been a faithful reader of The Real A, and somehow found this lovely site when it was created.  Knowing my penchant for all things quirky and music-related, he showed me the way.  I lurked for a few months, then timidly started posting.  At the time I was the youngest member of the merry gang. (or marry gang.:)) With the exception of my recent E&T-ness, I have been a faithful reader/poster ever since.

Along those lines, I had a most interesting dream last night which I feel I must share.  I dreamt that I was having a conversation with our dear BK, in a cafe somewhere I think, and he was talking about music he had been asked to write for a commerical, and to my surprise and delight, he asked if I would consider singing some of this music (Hey, this is a dream, remember?)  The odd part was that sometime during this little conversation, for no reason whatsoever, he turned into a woman...a woman resembling Meryl Streep, if I recall.  Odd, no?  :)

Watched about an hour of GWTW. Yes, it looks beautiful, but I didn't find the UltraResolution as revelatory as it was on SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. The sound seems the same as on the previous DVD release - a repurposed 5.1 Dolby Digital track. I'm surprised they didn't offer DD mono as an alternative, but they didn't.

DR MBarnum, there is no separate listing for screen tests if they are indeed there. There may be Easter eggs I haven't found (haven't looked for any yet, frankly, and the tests may be contained in those Easter eggs. There are bits and pieces of the tests in the documentary "The Making of a Legend," of course, but I'm sure you knew that already. Anyway, if I find out more, I'll post it here.

Actually, DR Pogue, I have encountered various individuals with my name.  When I was in Madison, the bank kept putting the paycheck of William R. Orr into my account--back before electronic everything, of course.  I, honest soul that I am, would always report the error.

But once many years ago, I was sitting in criminal court on a matter that did not involve myself when the bailiff called out "William Orr!" as the next case--it turned out to be a possession of illegal substances charge for an entirely different individual.

A few months later I got a phone call from a bill collector.  When I assured her I was William F., not William J., I told her the above story.  Sure enough, the next day she called me back to let me know she had found the deadbeat--in the county jail.

Happy Anniversary indeed.  What a pleasant few years it has been amongst such friends.
I first encountered BK through his "Real A" column and then found a very similar style of writing at another site which now seems to have disappeared - Well it has from MY computer. When BK suddenly vanished from that site I eventually tracked him down through a question to Mr Barkalot (Thank you again Mark). I was led to BK through the kindness of his close friend Mr Guy Haines.

I think I may have first posted at HHW about February 2002.

3rd Anniversary Wishes to HHW!

DRelmore introduced this site to me about a month ago when I visited him in NYC.  I lurked for a while, jumped in a few weeks ago, and never looked back.

My only regret is that I must've missed some pretty interesting conversations in the first 3 years.  Also, my admiration for BK and his colleagues who keep this site going - it's a lot of work.  I'm responsible for this little site:

www.orgsites.com/oh/joyluckclub (http://www.orgsites.com/oh/joyluckclub)

which is not nearly as interactive as HHW and still takes up a lot of time.

Just returned from the opera a little while ago. The Budapest Opera House has been restored to its former glory - someone should post a picture. it's magnificent. Saw Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. Excellent. Haven't seen it since I was 6 - and it made a lot more sense now.

I was introduced to this site by bk, whom I met before the site. I really wasn't particularly interested in posting, but he lured me in -- and the rest is herstory.

I, too, will not attempt to imitate BK's inimitable style.  I started coming to HHW sometime during the summer after it started (June or July, I think).  I didn't know about The Real A on sondheim.com, only BK's notes on FA.  When that site no longer proved welcoming, I drifted without direction until I found HHW.  I've been coming here ever since (except for when my computer permanently crashed in April of this year and I had no easy access.  I wasn't able to spend ALL of my time at work on HHW...that would be unseemly ::)).

Anyway, meeting Jeff (and Jeff's wife and kids), Mike (MBarnum) and Jane a few months ago was a thrill.  Hopefully, we can have another PNW HHW gathering that will include Jed, Ann and Tom (TCB).  Maybe BK can take a field trip to the Northwest!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

Hmm, third anniversary is leather!  Leave it to me to find that out (if I hadn't, td would have).  I discovered this here site about a year and a half ago.  I was trying to find (and still am) an address where I could contact Jerry Herman.  That lead me to Carol Channing, HELLO DOLLY!, and eventually Bruce Kimmel. I lurked for a while, because I was terrified that this gathering of sophisticates would beat me senseless if I attempted to offer an opinion.  Instead, I was met with the warmest greetings from one and all.

I could never have imagined that I would meet so many wonderful, warm, and witty people who would become so much a part of my life.  You have cheered me when I was down and applauded me when I have succeeded.  I even gained a son and daughter in the process.  Thank you one and all for being such a large and wonderful part of my life, and especially to BK for bringing us all together.

Regarding 2001 and GWTW:

I would never consider 2001 to be a favorite movie of mine, but I did enjoy watching it, especially the first time when I saw it on a widescreen.  I have probably seen it three times since it was originally released.  I find it unusual, entertaining, and maybe even thought-provoking, but if I never saw it again, I would not be heartbroken.

I think BK summed up my feelings about GONE WITH THE WIND, when he said that he just didn't get it. That would be my opinion of the film.  I don't care for any of the characters in the film, and I especially dislike the character of Scarlett.  The movie, to me, just goes on and on, and gets nowhere.  I am glad that it is a film that so many people enjoy, but I just don't happen to be one of them.

GWTW: Thank you Tom. I'm with you all the way.
I like to watch "2001" every few years. It's is not emotionally involving but the philosphy and the technical achievements are always good to revisit. I guess it's significance is often related to the time of our first viewing. I think I saw GWTW first in the mid 1970's. I thought - "so what?".  I enjoyed the musical more when I saw it in London a few years earler. I would not bother with the book.

Gone With the Wind I have only seen in sections. When it used to play on network TV when I was a kid I would usually see either the first half or the second half...but never the whole thing together.

Good Evening!  From New York City!

-all together now, "New York City?!??!?"  -Damn those commercials! ;)

Steve and I made it up here with only a spot or two of traffic in Virginia, but, otherwise, it was smooth sailing.  Very smooth.  And since the SmartTag system is now part of the EZPazz system, we even got to sail through the tolls.  All the tolls!

Beautiful, clear day.  On the cold side, but it's supposed to be that way!

After getting settled into our room, we me DR PennyO for a light snack and lots of "discuss"!  :)  It was great getting to see her again, and to spend more than just 30 seconds with her this time.  And I'm on board for the New York debut of "Jewish Thighs on Broadway"!

Steve and I walked around Times Square afterwards, and made a stop in the humongous Toy'R'Us to pick up some goodies for my nieces and nephew.

Now we're back at the hotel just taking a small breather before heading out for a nice, leisurely paced dinner.  Italian!  YUM!!!!  We shall feast!  Oh, yes, we shall feast!!  And drink too!  I'm thinking some grappa might be very good tonight with the chill in the air.

So...

At the Academy of Motion Picture of Arts and Sciences headquarters in the Hills of Beverly, there is a lovely state of the art theatre where they periodically mount different film series, oftentimes using reconstructed and/or freshly struck prints.  I went there for the first time last night to see A Place in the Sun, a film I had never seen before.

I was most impressed.  Some of director George Stevens' decisions about how shots were framed, lighted and from what distance they were taken were surprising and added tremendous tension to the story.  Miss Elizabeth Taylor (19 years of age at the time and shown for the first time kissing on-screen) was radiant, and Mr. Mongomery Clift was as wonderfully sensitive and conflicted as only Mr. Clift can be.  The breathtaking performance in this film, however, was delivered by Miss Shelly Winters, in my humble opinion (IMHO, in internet lingo.)  The scene between Miss Winters and Mr. Clift on the boat must qualify as one of the greatest scenes in all of American cinema.

Jose I’m so excited you will be playing for Penny’s show-gosh I wish I could go.  Best of all it is because I introduced Penny to this site.  I also kept sending her emails with snippets from posts to demonstrate why she should join us.

It is also because of Penny I found this site.  I had encouraged her to reconnect with Bruce.  So on her next trip to L.A. she called and asked for his phone number which I gave her.  Knowing the work number I had for him was obsolete I went for a search on line and just happened to find a reference to HHW.  I believe that was just shy of three days ago.  I did far more lurking than posting for a long time.

I’m still amazed the difference the people here have made in my life and I now have a goal to meet every one of you.  I have been moved by the ease and relaxed feeling of long time friendships when we do meet in person.

I have also have found an artistic outlet here-photography.  Having a place to post my photos has encouraged me to walk with my camera-I must give special thanks to DRLaura for inspiring me.

Speaking of Bette, which is of course Etteb spelled backwards, the Divine One's film entitled JINXED is escaping to the world of dvd.  Isn't that something?  Isn't that just too too?  Now we'll all be able to see Miss M - M SsiM spelled backwards - on the verge of a nervous breakdown.  Why she isn't on the verge of an anxious breakdown or even a lethargic breakdown is a mystery to me.  A mystery which for all intents and purposes could be solved in THE RANDY VICAR MEETS VICKI EYDIE.
Not to be outdone, or even overdone, not even indone, Paramount has announced, with no great clashes of trumpets, that the other diva of the 70s, a Miss Barbra Streisand, will be represented on dvd in February with a long-awaited release of ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER.  I don't know about you, but on a clear day, I can't even see the Pacific Ocean!  Still it's a release to look forward to, but only if you like Vincente Minnelli -love him! His movies don't sit there like so much fish; or Babs herself.  I don't get Barbra.  There was a time when I did, but now she just needs a great producer with her in the studio, someone who would let the true Barbra's voice come through with the proper material and the proper arrangements, done of course by our very own DR elmore3003.

HAPPY ANNIVERSAY!

WASHINGTON (Nov. 9) - Attorney General John Ashcroft, a favorite of conservatives, and Commerce Secretary Don Evans, one of President Bush's closest friends, resigned Tuesday, the first members of the Cabinet to leave as Bush heads from re-election into his second term.

Jane, I think BK and I became good friends in that initial conversation the day of the reading.  Some people you just know they get you!

Thanks for the compliments about the interview.  But a good interview is only as good as the interviewer.  BK asked all the right questions, then gave one not only the leisure to answer them, but encouraged the detail and brought a sense of fun and relaxation to the whole thing.

The fall pictures are beautiful.  It makes me homesick for Kentucky.  Fall is my favourite time of year and LA never quite gets there for me.

DERBRUCER, great puppies.  I'd take one, but they're going to grow up to be big dogs, aren't they?  After ten years of cockers, only medium sized dogs, I told The Lovely Wife, we were going back to Terriers.  I want small dogs, small appetites, small poop from here on in!

I was delighted to hear of Mr. Ashcroft's resignation.  Of course, he was the Evil we knew.  Who knows what's coming?  I do hope his departure will signal a scaling back of the more frightening aspects of the Patriot Act in the near future.

Evening all!

Wow, has it really been 3 years for the site?  I was thinking that it has been a little over a year since I joined.  And to prove it, I know that showed pictures of last years Farm Festival with the plastic cow you can milk.

They got a new cow for this years event.  Here is a picture of her.

Jane, what lovely pictures you took.  We don’t have anything like that down here.  Note the palm trees in the background of some of the pictures I took.

I would LOVE to  have one of those puppies.  The bigger the dog, the more better I like it.  The only problem I have is the money to take proper care of another dog.  Two are about all I can afford.  That and I have to think of my Mom.  She’s the one who has to stay home with them all day.  I don’t think she could handle three dogs.

I do so hope they all find loving homes.

Jrand, Words cannot express how sorry I am about your Sister and Brother-in-law.  I know what it is like—sorta.  I attach very easy and when two friends of mine decided to call it quits, I bawled like a baby.  She later told me of everyone they told, she was most worried about how I would take it.  I couldn’t help myself, I just couldn’t picture one without the other.  Now, sadly, both of them have drifted away.

I don’t think I can ever tell the real story of how I found HHW.  I’d just like to say that I’m very glad I did.  A real board, with really nice people on it.  I’m so very glad that things I was told on other boards are not true, like “It’s only a board”, “How can you take anything written on a board serious?”.  Maybe that’s true of other boards but not here.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again.  Bruce, you can be really proud of yourself for coming up with this little oasis in the middle of a dessert called the Internet.

As tired as I sometimes get, I always make it a point to stop by and read the day to day goings on of all of you.  You’ve made me think.  You’ve made me laugh.  You’ve made me cry.

Happy Anniversary to you, the board and the people who helped make it what it is.

Gee, I think I’m getting to mushy.

I’ve got a few pictures to share.  You see, here is the cow I was telling you about.

The day turned very dark and gloomy after I took those shots.  It was very nasty by the time I went home.

There was an earthworm on the street, right in the path of where the bus runs.  Poor little thing.  I don't know how it got there in the middle of the street.

Well, I watched for a few minutes and could't stand the thought of it being mushed by a bus so I used an old bus pass I found on the street to pick it up and put it by one the trees on the side walk.  They have a box of dirt for lack of  better word for it that they grow out of.

I was told I was "crazy" for doing that but I'm not sorry I saved it.    At least I tried.

My own form of animal rescue, I guess.   :)

Hello, fellow dear readers:

I remember the day BK was too busy to write regular notes, so he asked us to write using his style. I searched a long time to find that day. It was on October 5, 2002. Here is my entry:

"Well, dear readers, last night I watched a video of the Donny and Marie Show. The guest stars were Cindy Williams and Bruce Kimmel. Oh, what a fun show. They don't write shows like that any more. Nor do they style hair like that any more. And may I say that Bruce Kimmel looks quite smashing in a sparkling silver tux, in my opinion (IMO in internet lingo).

My, that was a long and pointless paragraph, wasn't it? What the hell am I talking about?

Last night I dreamed I was at Manderley. In my dream, Jason Graae had been hired by a local high school to play the lead in their play. Isn't that just too too? Does anyone know what the ell I'm talking about? Did anyone notice I just typed the word ell instead of hell?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day. I must do the things I do. I must drive around in my automobile transporting able-bodied teenagers wherever they want to go, whist dodging spat-out jelly beans from the back seat.

Today's topic -- Have you ever shoved a jelly bean up your nose? I have not. Your turn. Post away, my pretties.

Ah!  Since it is nostalgia time:  (Now there's a word for you.  Nostalgia.  It sounds like a nasal disease or something.  Who ever came up with that word, anyway?)

Good morning, dear readers. These notes will have to be short and pithy, because I have things to do and places to go and people to meet and thumbs to twiddle. Now there is a word: twiddle. Who ever thought up such a word, I ask you. It is reserved for thumbs. Can you twiddle your eyes? Can you twiddle your nostrils, or even your toes? No. Thumbs alone can you twiddle. And it just sits there on the page, like the puddle where the poodle made the twiddle. (Sondheim reference.)

What the hell am I talking about?

Last night I dreamed I was at Manderly. I tell a lie. I did not dream that at all. Last night my Joe and I were bemoaning the "New AMC"--American Movie Classics, a U.S. cable channel, for our non-Usonian readers.

The "new AMC" seems to consist of two revisions in the format of said channel: 1) A "classic" is any movie that got big box offic hype in the eighties or nineties; 2) Lots and lots more commercials, on a channel that used to interrupt a film once only in the middle to give viwers a chance to make a puddle or a piddle while they twiddle. Damn them! Damn them all to hell!

But then at midnight or so, we flipped the channel to AMC and there was The Creature from the Black Lagoon, which we both dearly love, despite Mr. Bruce Kimmel's assessment of it as "cheesy". Not nearly as cheesy as the pizza we had the other night.

And then we got up this morning to find them showing Sabrina. The real Billy Wilder Sabrina, not the splashy remake. Still loaded with commercials every ten minutes, but at least a genuine classic. Two and a half hours with the ads. (We started taping in the middle so as to watch it later, since we have things to do and places to go and people to meet.)

So it seems they have relegated the classics to the late night and early morning when nobody is watching anyway, and are devoting prime time to agressively making themselves look like every other cable channel.

Well, enough of this idle chit-chat. I must off. I must do the things I do. I must drive my car about Long Island. I must prepare myself for tomorrow night's gala festivities. But I shall stop in from time to time to check on these here notes.

So do not be errant and truant, or even truant and errant. Post away, my pretties.

Hereward is indeed a fine old name of Anglo-Saxon pedigree, belonging most notably to Hereward the Wake who led the last pocket of Anglo-Saxon resistance against William the Conqueror, after that Norman adventurer won the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and was crowned King of England.  Though William finally broke the resistance, he never caught Hereward.  I have no idea why Hereward was called "the Wake".

Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and I turn (and I post)
And I dream of what I need. . . .

Just heard my favourite Andy Williams song on the radio - possibly first time for 40 years! Have my own copy of course. "Wonderful World Of The Young". Big hit here but only made it to #99 on Billboard.
Hey! At least it's a post.
Must also mention that I have listened to "A Man Of No Importance" a few times lately.  Lovely score.

I am a bit bleary-eyed this evening.  I really have been staring at the computer screen far too long this day.  But I shall be here all the livelong night because it is our anniversary.

First thing in the morning, I'll be mixing our Writer's Block CD (songs from the musical featured in the book).

Does anyone wish to volunteer for the Unseemly Interview formatting job?

Well, people WUSSBURGERED, I can't believe it.  No posts in over an hour.  I, myself, was doing things that needed doing.
