Malcolm and Christine are such nice people. I had several book signings there.

In fact, when we moved to Austin 7+ years ago (Has it been that long?), they came to our Los Angeles house twice and we gave them about half of my books; ones that we were not going to take with us. There were so many that they had to make two trips.

Yes, the Tony Awards are upon us once again -- they will be on CBS this coming Sunday, June 12th. On the radio show, we listen to all the new and revival musicals that opened this past season (well, at least to the ones that have cast recordings) -- from Amazing Grace to Tuck Everlasting.....the hits like Hamilton, Waitress and School of Rock to the flops like Allegiance and American Psycho and the revivals of The Color Purple, Fiddler on the Roof and She Loves Me (a real treat since the cast recording isn't out quite yet -- don't ask me how I got my hands on an early copy of it, but it's an amazing recording!)......Enjoy the Show!!!

LA's landscape just became poorer with the loss of that great bookshop. I'm so glad I paid Malcolm and Christine a visit on my last foray through LA in April. Little did I know it would be my last. And of course, it will always be significant as the place where we two like minds met and forged our friendship. My name is on that author wall somewhere.

I sadly remember all those bookshops up and down Hollywood Blvd. and elsewhere that have disappeared. Life has changed; not for the better.

So that's what I'm going to talk about and I guess the Beatles' Paperback Writer would fit best as my answer to his actual question.

In the late 1970s, my mother and her friend Madelon worked in a Little Professor bookstore in Northville, Michigan, owned by Detroit newscaster Jack LeGoff and his wife. When they decided to close the store, Mom and Madelon opened Bookstall on the Main in 1979. As you can see in the photo, it was tiny. Mom said it had the dimensions of a Greyhound bus - 8 feet wide and 40 feet long. Small, but mighty - they had a fabulous selection, a delightful kids' room in the back, special order service, and author events.

Eventually, my Mom and Dad bought Madelon's share and ran the business together until word came that Border's would be opening a superstore a few miles away. The Bookstall was up for sale when my Dad died in August of 1984 and it eventually sold in 1985. The new owner moved it to a much bigger corner location, but did not stay in business long.

It's going to sound really pretty decent when it's done, but I have a very specific kind of sound I want and he hasn't gotten it yet, but now understands, and then we're convening Thursday to redo three vocals - not because they're bad but because they involved numbers with a lot of moving around where you can hear them getting out of breath or missing syllables at ends of words, etc. Just want to have those clean.

We called him the old man, and he had essentially converted his house into a bookstore/library. There were probably 50 bookcases covered with treasures, and like any other bookstore, they were categorized. He really didn't have much of anything for little kids, which was when we started to go, but I remember finding a Peter Arno collection called "Excuse Me, But You're Sitting on My False Eyelashes." New Yorker cartoons for an 8-year-old.

I, of course, immediately recognized Arno's work when I saw the original Pajama Game art a few years later.
