Well, you've read the notes, the notes weren't easy, and now it is time for you to post until the ain't easy cows come home.

And the word of the day is: LITTORAL!
-
First post after BK!

I am home!

Hi, Tom.
-
I can't even write a good play, how the hell would I think. I could write a musical?
-
Well, looky here! :D

Wow! I did this on my tablet. I didn't realize that it would be that big! (That's not a euphemism. ;) )

Hi, George!

Hi, George!
Hi, Tom...again!

Thanks, .George.

Congratulations to TCB on his new plateau

Why am I up at three in the morning. Well, I was going to bed at one-thirty when the new master of our next release posted to Dropbox - so I had to listen. I was very happy with the one that was difficult (there are two scores on one CD) except I felt the level was too low. I e-mailed that, and within minutes I had a new version of those tracks and it was better, although I'll listen with fresh ears today at some point - but the louder level helps give it some punch. This score was taken from acetates and the guy did a really good job as he has on other acetate transfers - it's never going to sound like tape, but this music is so great it's just wonderful to have it cleaned up and sounding as good as it's ever going to sound.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I was in bed by 830 last night. I think I could have used another hour of sleep, but at least I will be awake today.
-
Rehearsal at 11:00 this morning. Things went rather well yesterday, and the cast happily retained most of their vocal parts since there had been two days without our music director.
I need to get over losing my violin battle yesterday, but it's difficult at the moment since comments like "you may need to simplify your music for future productions" really irk. I had wanted the additional violin to cover the difficult passages and play the violin lines in the opening that the director has cut because the cast cannot play necessarily instruments and deal with all of the exposition. And this is why Jule Styne threatened to pull the GYPSY score if Jerome Robbins cut "Little Lamb."
-
We'll see how today goes.
-
Worst musicals ever:
CARRIE (still at the top)
RAGGEDY ANN
JELLy'S LAST JAM (what the fat hell was this turkey about?)
DANCE A LITTLE CLOSER (Alan J. Lerner, phone home!)
THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS (beautiful score, God-awful libretto)
MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (I believe nothing will ever fix tis show, no matter how much the Sondheim Cult praises it)
OPAL (the ad said "a little girl and her pig"; well, they slaughter the pig!)
WICKED (brilliant novel, misguided musical)
KA-BOOM (á la A CHORUS LNE, God auditions that last remaining humans in the world to stay alive and breed)
I think the worst play was BURN THIS (if you can't buy the premise, there's no play after that)
-
I've seen a lot in 40 years of New York Theatre, and I know there are more I've now repressed or forgotten.

Screw coffee. I need alcohol!

Today's fresh hell: at 11:00am yesterday, someone whose email address is jimhench9@gmail.com used my`debit card to charge a $500 Nieman Marcus gift card. I just spoke to the bank and the debit card is DOA. They gave me the Nieman Marcus number, and a wonderful lady gave me the email address of the purchaser, the order information, and canceled the order.
What's interesting about all of this is that the card name was "Larry Moore," which is not the name on the card. The only account I have that uses this name is with Amazon.com. Could the gmail possessor be an Amazon employee?
-
TOD:
I didn't like WICKED. The songs were "okay," but the book was terrible.
-
I spent most of yesterday doing a heart stress test.
Actually, I had to do it twice. I get winded easily, which was the reason for the test. I couldn't stay on the treadmill long enough to get a reading, so then they decided to give me a chemical stress test, which was not fun.
-
Congrats to TCB on your milestone!
-
Good morning, all.
-
TOD: Macbeth 2000.
-
So, let's see. Chance of rain or thunderstorms this evening. Chance of rain or storms tomorrow evening, which they want to make a rain date. My goodness, I just can't wait to find out what happens. :)
-
Good morning!
-
I'll be leaving soon for my flight to LA for the Barbra tour. First show is Tuesday at the Staples Center.

The good news this morning is that my colleague on GUYS & DOLLS is bringing me the next edit of Act one this afternoon when I'm back from rehearsal.

DR LAURA certainly leads an exciting life.

Congrats to DR TCB on his millstone.

DR CHAS SMITH - I hope Madame Rose is not discouraged.....

This may be of some interest....and may fit in with the TOD:

I wish these card thieves could be found.

Last night when I said I was crashing I did so immediately after my last post, and I stayed asleep. That was a rare event for me. Still, 6:30 was earlier than I wanted to wake up.

TOD:
I don't remember what it was called or even anything about the story, but it took place in the Middle Ages. And the villain sang a song called "I'm a middle-aged woman in the Middle Ages." It was supposed to be a musical comedy, but most of it wasn't very funny - just really silly.
-
I'm up, I'm up - four hours of sleep, I think.
-
Druxy - vibes that everything is OK!
-
Apropos of nothing except that I said I'd take a few, here's some photographic evidence of last week's book sale at the Pequot Library in Southport in the Nutmeg/Constitution State.
I think you can click to enlarge most of these.
-
I was, miraculously, at the head of the line for this one.
Behind me, as it began to snake around...
-
Plenty of lovely space in which to relax.
-
Nice selection of sheet music there, and though I've never really collected it as such, I couldn't resist picking up a few representative samples for the cover art.
-
The colors are washed out in the photo, but that early FINIAN'S RAINBOW is a favorite.
-
That isn't all I bought, just all I snapped pics of to share with you lovely people. Haven't done it in years, but a decade or so ago when I was REALLY going to a lot of tag (yard) sales, estate sales, and library sales, I'd photograph each day's take. It's a nice memento.
-
Catch o' the Day, though...
-
And that was the only program in the bin.
Two dollah'.
-
Nice photos DR Chas, thanks.
-
Nice finds DR CHAS SMITH....yes, thanks for sharing the loot!
-
Very nice finds, ChasSmith! Congats!

Jekyll and Hyde comes to mind
I saw the pre-Broadway tour in Seattle and it was riveting. The video was so different. They made so many changes and none were improvements...and The Hoff was just so wrong.

And now, I must go. My sister and niece are at a PFLAG Olympia booth at the Olympia's Farmer's Market, so I'll visit for a bit. And I just saw on FB that another friend will be there at her booth, selling scented candles and things.
Be back later!
-
I am home, still furious over the violin situation, and today there was a row between the music director and the director. I spoke to our producer about the situation, and perhaps after the reading we will reach some rapport. At the moment, I'm not happy.
We did have a good runthrough, and the show came in at 85 minutes without applause. Just right for this piece.
-
Good afternoon, all.
-
TOD:
Working (it didn't -- all five or six productions I had to endure)
A production of Camelot reduced to 10 performers
Starlight Express
Some bad musical version of Robin Hood that might have been called Hoodwinked! (or is that the bad Robin Hook musical in Curtains?)
-
Hello, everyone.
-
Beautiful finds, ChasSmith. I have that sheet music from Finian's hanging up in my office.
-
Larry, sorry to hear that someone stole your debit card information, but glad that you had cooperative and pleasant people to handle it.
-
Hello, everyone.
Hi, Jeanne.

Congrats, TCB, on the new plateau.

I wish these card thieves could be found.
I wish I felt that everything was being done to catch them.

Hi, John G.
When is your trip to Louisville?
-
I did some laundry and soon need to do some cleaning. I'm not in the best of moods today. I'm STILL trying to get back to normal after Tuesday's dental visit. Thankfully, it doesn't usually hit me like this.
-
Hi, John G.
When is your trip to Louisville?
I leave Aug. 13. Hope to get there the following day.
-
Good news on the AC front. I was at the hairdresser the other day and we started talking about AC. (He'd just ordered a swamp cooler for the back of his salon.) When I complained about my unit not being adequate he reminded me that the filter needs to be cleaned regularly. Filter? I didn't think this one had a filter. I pulled out the booklet and sure enough, it does. It is so well hidden that you could look right at it dozens of times and not see it. So I cleaned it and...viola! Works much better! Yay!
I love it when some simple intervention takes care of a problem. I really don't do well in warm rooms; I'm MUCH more comfortable in coolness.

Are your sisters OK with you handling your parents' affairs or is that yet to be decided?

Hi, John G.

You're driving?
Yup. I have to take the bird and his cage, so driving is the only option.
-
Are your sisters OK with you handling your parents' affairs or is that yet to be decided?
They are, because they don't understand any of it.
-
I'm off to take a nap.
-
In other news, we are officially canceled for tonight!
-
I'm going out to pick up some good snack foods, and I plan on enjoying same (with libation, of course) through the evening. :)
-
I inherited some property when my mother died that was jointly owned by her brother. When her brother died his share went to his three kids. We sold it just before the real estate market crashed. I am so glad we did! I was fortunate that my three cousins were more than happy to let me handle things. That side of the family is extremely stubborn and bickers like crazy. I think they regarded me as objective third party, who would get things done and wouldn't get involved with their disputes.
Of course, the escrow agent didn't pay attention to the CLEARLY-written instructions and divided the proceeds equally between us. I owned a half share and my three cousins owned one-sixth each (a half-share to all three jointly). The checks all had to be returned and rewritten. Had that been my error I would have felt HORRIBLE. This person acted like it was nothing. Everything was straightened out, but one does wonder about people sometimes.
-
Are your sisters OK with you handling your parents' affairs or is that yet to be decided?
They are, because they don't understand any of it.
That helps. They probably don't want to be involved.
-
I enjoyed your photos, Chas.

Lady Macbeth emailed me today. All this sudden rush of friendliness makes me wonder if she's looking for the place to put the knife.

Wow, an easy fix! I am very happy your air conditioner is working, especially now when your dental work has caused pain.

That's very sweet. With the current coldness between my collaborator and myself, I am not sure I want to be there!

Back from a horrible drive to Fullerton (an hour and ten minutes for a forty-six minute drive), a mediocre lunch consisting of a submarine sandwich (salami and ham only, no cheese), teeny-tiny side salad and literally one bite of a piece of pepperoni pizza that was pretty ordinary - so probably eight or nine hundred calories, and I'll jog off some of those shortly. The drive home was an hour. But the horrible doesn't stop there. I love Hello, Dolly! I've seen it many, many times - originally with Channing when it came to the Music Center (it actually was the first show to play there), then Ginger Rogers, Pearl Bailey, Dorothy Lamour, Phyllis Diller, and the two tours with Channing. For me, Gower Champion's direction and choreography were absolute genius.
Well, once again we have director vision, we have creatives who think they're better than the authors and the original director, you know, the ones that made one of the most successful and beloved shows in musical theater history. I honest to Pete don't know WHAT the hell I saw but it sure wasn't Hello, Dolly! Hello, Dolly begins with "Call on Dolly" and goes directly into "I Put My Hand In." Not here - here we get one of the late act one monologues about Ephraim while Dolly sits at a mirror. Then we get an acapella slow version of Call on Dolly, which is, I believe, the arrangement the Signature Theater did. Then we get - now wait for it - not "I Put My Hand In" (which is listed in the program) but the movie's opening song, Just Leave Everything to Me. What chutzpah. And, needless to say, wrong and awful. Of course I know several people and I'm not going to discuss that aspect of the show, other than to say if you're going to do new choreography it better be as good as Mr. Champion - it wasn't. The Waiter's Gallop? Not a laugh to be had (and please, wardrobe, sew up the waiter's pants that were split open seam to seam). The greatest showstopper of them all - nope - just swaying and meandering. And on and on and on, almost no laughs, a less than half-full house, and a set that I absolutely loathed. I'm pretty certain I have no idea where these orchestrations came from (no credit for any orchestrator - shameful), but they're not the ones I've known and loved for fifty years. They did have a seventeen-piece band. But I want to know if these changes were approved or if they're just lying to the licensor (why else would you put I Put My Hand In in the program when you're doing the other song). This director with vision has added stuff from The Matchmaker, and endless Streisand bits from the movie. That's how Dolly is played here - ala Streisand. This kind of thing involves moral issues and being a creator and writer it does not sit well with me. It would be one thing if Thornton Wilder worked on the musical or if Ernest Lehman had worked on it, but they didn't, and so to interpolate their work is shameful. The stuff I did with Li'l Abner involved ONLY stuff written by Panama and Frank, the writers of the Broadway show. Period.

Yikes! Could someone (anonymously) turn them in? ::)

My friend Paul is seeing Hello, Dolly! tomorrow. I'll be curious to hear what he thinks.
-
Congrats to TCB on your milestone!
-
Greetings from Southern California. Oops! I mean Northern Virginia.
-
I'm home after being at the airport for about 8 hours. My Southwest Airlines flight was from DCA (National) to St. Louis and then on to LAX.
-
It was supposed to leave at 12:35 pm. The departure time was changed several times. We finally boarded at about 4pm, I think. Shortly thereafter, we were told there were weather issues and we wouldn't be leaving any time soon so passengers could get off the plane for a while if they wanted. I opted to stay on and then about a half hour later they asked everyone to get off. It was finally cancelled. Then the long wait for checked luggage.
-
The next available flight on Southwest is Monday. It arrives at 11 pm.
-
Of course all the LA critics, as per usual, RAVED.
-
Luckily I have Delta miles and they have a flight that only required 12, 500 miles. It leaves at about 3 pm and arrives at 8 pm. I have to change planes in Cincinnati--hello DR Ginny!
-
Page 5!
-
TCB: to answer your question: I'll be in Las Vegas till Monday, the 8th. What time do you arrive?
-
Time to say goodnight!
-
Goodnight!
-
Did a two-and-a-half mile jog and will now watch a motion picture of some sort.
-
Travel vibes for KevinH.
-
I finished Anne Tyler's Vinegar Girl today. I am now watching a production of Taming of the Shrew as a palate cleanser.
It's a filmed version of the play with Larry Drake, Karen Austin of "Night Court," Bruce Davidson and Franklyn Seales as Petruchio.
The start is fairly good.
-
That production of Hello, Dolly! seems to place the emphasis on the hell part of the title.
-
Did they have someone impersonate Louis Armstrong, too?

Good night, all.

Good evening!
-
Thank you all for reading my posts about being gone this evening.
-
We had a fabulous meal. I am still stuffed.
-
We started at around 3:30 with drinks and antipasto.
-
It was wonderful!
-
Later, we had salad with pears and Gorgonzola.
-
Then for the main meal we had lasagna, garlic bread, and asparagus.
-
Not only was the sauce homemade, but the pasta was, too.
-
I make my own sauce, but I have never bothered to make the noodles.
-
Finally, for dessert we had homemade tiramisu. Mine was a virgin tiramisu.
-
The drinkers had a sangria that Martin made from scratch.
-
Then, after dinner, we were too full to chat so we watched SHREK, THE MUSICAL.
-
I skipped SHREK when it premiered here in Seattle, because I thought it looked dumb; but I really loved it.
-
Even painted green, Brian d'Arcey James still make me swoon.
-
And Sutton Foster is such a talent.

-
Obviously you had a fun evening.

I am hungry after reading about the delicious meal and I don'the even like tirimisu.

Oh. I thought that I'd read that it was cut. I have the DVD, but I haven't watched it. I'll have to see if it's different. I just remember that it seemed very awkward and difficult to move.

Reboot...probably going to be the first of a whole new franchise.
