Title: MIGHTY LAK' AN IRISH SONG
Post by: bk on August 29, 2016, 12:11:56 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like an Irish song, and now it is time for you to post until the Irish cows come home.

Well, I only saw the first act of "The Fantasticks."  I had to leave after intemission to be able to get to the TAO auditions in time.  A couple of months ago, I posted about a production that I saw in Portland, Oregon directed by a friend of mine, where they added mothers and split the lines between them.  Well, this production (which only played this weekend) was directed by the same guy, and he added mothers to this production, too!  WTH?  It was otherwise well done and well cast with good singers, except for the mothers (who shouldn't have been there), Matt's father (I forget his character's name), and El Gallo.  Matt's father always seemed like he did not know many of his lines.  El Gallo was a good performer, but he was a kid...probably just out of high school.  Much too young for the role.

And that's my 2 cents.

It wasn't horrible.  Just a couple of wrong directoral decisions.

After "The Fantasticks,", TAO had the first night of auditions for our fifth annual "An Improbable Peck of Plays."  Saturday afternoon, I made copies of all the scripts to be used as sides, but I only made one set of copies.  So yesterday, after concessions, I had to rush to a FedExKinko's and make the copies and rush to the theater.

Post by: George on August 29, 2016, 01:44:05 AM
Most of the auditioners were there by the time I got there, so I just had to make the announcements and introductions, and then the directors took over.  They handed out the scripts and chose who read what (of course), and overall it went realy well.  We have more auditions tonight, then they plan to cast quickly.

Do concerts count as UK shows?  If so, I'd also add the Adele concert at Royal Albert Hall.  (She seemed so much more relaxed there than in her other concert appearances.)

Follow-up from Yesterday re: My Mac

It's a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch).  System El Capitan 10.11.6.

Word version: 15.25

The problem is that despite the settings, the program is not auto-correcting my misspellings.

Misspelled words are not highlighted in red, as they are with MS Word on my old machine....even when I deliberately misspell something and select "Check Spelling".

I took a document from the new machine, e-mailed it to the old machine, then pasted the text into a document created by the old MS Word, and everything was okay.

So, there has to me an issue with the new program.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I'm also having an issue with the new iMovie, but that's a bit more complicated.

I also need to get a new personal accounting program (something VERY EASY to set up).

I have been using Quicken for years, but the updated Quicken won't read my old Quicken files, so I might as well consider other programs.

Any suggestions?

Today I will work my way into "The Crapshooters Ballet." It's long, mostly based on "Luck, Be A Lady."  This show needed Trude Rittman to compose the dance music,  she would have made more interesting material out of Loesser's melody and chords than whoever worked with Michael Kidd,  OI'm hoping I will find the orchestration as imaginative as it is in the Havana sequence.

DR John G, yep! PBS fund drives happen far too often and I find them painful.  I also find much of PBS insulting these days: Manhattan's Channel 13 seems to be a lot of infomercials these days, and I have no idea who thought Lawrence Welk's mix of corn, kitsch. and awful musical arrangements deserved a life there.

PBS also has a knack of finding the whiniest, most irritating announcers to bore you to death with their begging, pleading, cajoling, and nagging the viewer into handing over money for bogus gift items.

Today I will work my way into "The Crapshooters Ballet." It's long, mostly based on "Luck, Be A Lady."

I've only played this show once, several years ago.  My memories are kind of vague but it seemed like it took a while to thoroughly decipher the handwritten MTI score to my satisfaction.  And since it was my first time to really learn the dance music, I was kind of surprised that the aforementioned seemed to be little more than that song.  (That's probably a bit simplistic and I should go back to it.)

Here's today's irritation:
http://www.classical-scene.com/2016/08/25/restoring-classic-broadway-score/

These boys are certainly swelling their egos. The work was originally all done by me in 1997 for Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization andCity Center Encores!.  They worked from my cleaned up parts and scores provided by Roger Grodsky of the Unversity of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, whose production I believe they ignore in this article as well as his name.  OPERA NEWS magazine in 1998 published an article by John Sheehan about me and the reconstruction.  Encores! used the article in fund raising.

Loved both versions of Forsyte Saga, even if the remake did cut the last trilogy of the novels.

I also loved both versions of Parade's End, even if they both cut the fourth novel, which was so mean-spirited that I can understand why so many people hate it.

eBay is down?  Very unusual for them.

Yep.  Since 1:22 EST.  Someone posted that the problem was all over the country, not local,l and the problem is with Comcast.

Gene Wilder played the part of Mr. Stein on "Will and Grace":

Mr. Stein: I thank you from the heart of my bottom. No. Wait a minute. Strike that, reverse it.

 ***

Will: "I am Mr Stein." Say it.

Mr. Stein: It.

***

Mr. Stein: I like you, Will. You remind me of a young me.
[pauses]
Mr. Stein: Do you know where my red wagon is?
Will: Uhh... no. I'll have to ask mom.

Was just listening to the rather horrifying duet of Streisand and Melissa McCarthy singing Anything You Can Do - a terrible arrangement and if what I heard on You Tube is actually the mix, the worst I've ever heard - I hope that's just a problem with the upload because all you hear is the band.  What was amusing to me was that we're doing the song with Jenna and Sami in the Kritzerland show, and I adjusted some of the lyrics for them.  And guess what - one of the lyrics I came up with is almost to the word in the Streisand version.  I guess great minds think alike although mine is truer to Berlin's scan and intention.

The Melissa McCarthy duet sounds fine to me.   The only cut I don't like is the one with Chris Pine. I wonder if that's his real voice or if he's trying to imitate someone.  I take that back.  I like Barbra's vocals - I wish she would have sung "I'll Be Seeing You" by herself.

Then there was Prime Suspect.

Back from a two-and-a-half mile jog.  Prior to that it was one hour of completely unnecessary and over the top drama, which was actually mind-boggling.  I'm supposed to have a conversation at seven-thirty with the person who caused it - we'll see if that actually happens.  If not, an e-mail will be sent - I should think a conversation would be much more pleasant.

Started watching an Italian flick called Bitter Rice with Vittorio Gassman and someone named Doris Dowling. She's said to be a Hollywood star, but I don't know her.

I'm liking the movie though. Neo-realism with a touch of pulp. Russ Meyer could have filmed the scenes of the scantily clad women working the rice fields, especially the big cat fight in the mud.

She was also in Panama Hattie with Ms. Ethel Merman.

But, I'll be back (here) later.

Well, the auditions are done and the shows are cast.  Those who are cast will get e-mails tomorrow saying they're cast.  After everyone has accepted, those who weren't cast will get their e-mails.  The first read-through won't be for a couple of weeks, so now we wait.
