Well, this is pretty cool...the movie "Florence Foster Jenkins" opened in the theaters just last month (it's still playing at a couple of local cinemas), and I just now ordered the Blu-ray from Amazon.co.uk (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01F000VKS/).  It was released there just yesterday (Monday) in England, but it's not been released in the US, yet (evidently, the movie opened in England back in May).

According to THIS (http://www.dvdsreleasedates.com/movies/7994/florence-foster-jenkins) site, "DVD and Blu-ray release date is estimated for November 2016."  I bought that and an "Amazon Exclusive Signed Edition" of Julian Ovenden's CD, Be My Love (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01CC846GQ/), both for less than $30 US! :D

Tomorrow we are taking a ferry to the island of Hydra.  After our stop in Turkey yesterday we are doubly sorry not to be ending the cruise, as originally scheduled,  in Istanbul.

Keith wanted to come straight home once our plans changed but I wanted to join our friends on one more Greek island for a couple of nights.  I picked Hydra as it loo,ed lovely and cars are not permitted.   The weather report is saying goes heavy rain.  I hope we miss it.

Boy, is this a Monday.  And yet, it's a Tuesday!

We just got half a minute of very light rain, so I guess that's our share of the storm?  But the constant breezes have been heavenly yesterday afternoon, all night, and even now.  Really beautiful.  I wouldn't mind if it stays this way all day, nicely overcast with beautiful air and maybe a little more rain which apparently we need.

The standard joke here is:

"What do you call the day that follows two days of solid rain in Connecticut?"  "Monday."

It's nice to have the opposite happen now and then.

TOD:

I've seen many of the original STAR TREK episodes, plus 2-3 of the movies with the original cast.  I've avoided the remakes and spin-offs.

I guess I've never been a Trekkie.

My late dear friend, Michael Ansara, was, of course, the original Klingon.

Excluding DEEP SPACE NINE, which we eventually stopped watching, I have seen all the STAR TREK TV and film versions.

I still recall watching the first episode.  Back then it was unusual for me to watch science fiction without Keith.  Not since then though I am pleased to say we enjoy it together.

Not a Trekkie or a Trekker but I did want the original series toward the end of its run. And I liked the second movie with Ricardo Montalban. Plus, I have some CDs with Shatner and Nimoy singing.

TOD - I would probably never have watched Star Trek, but Richard and Rob bonded over it very early in Rob's life and I went along for the ride.  I've only seen scattered episodes of the original series, but quite enjoyed The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise, the theme from which became Rob's personal anthem in high school.  As for the movies, my favorites are The Voyage Home and First Contact.

TOD:
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is my favorite movie.
I was a big fan of Star Trek The Next Generation. There were many very good episodes, but I think it was difficult for the writers to come up with plots that were truly original. A few times, they did and they were excellent. My favorite was when they met a species that spoke English, but they still couldn't understand what they were saying because they spoke exclusively in metaphors.

...and it's done.  We really enjoyed the hint of fall we had over the weekend, but the humidity finally got to me.  At least, now that it's September, this won't last for weeks on end.

I do not care for the original ST series very much......but I do like ST:TNG.  I think it's mostly because I like so many of the actors and characters....Picard, Riker, and Data in particular.

As DR AMY wrote, some of the episodes were very original and well done:  I especially liked the one where they captured a young Borg and tried to get him to understand he could be an individual.....probably my favorite.

Didn't much like Whoopi Goldberg's character or her acting on the show, so I mostly avoid the episodes that feature a LOT of her....

I only saw a couple of the movies....and none of them all the way through.

I was never a Star Trek fan, BUT I'll tell my Star Trek story.

I was in junior high or high school when the series first started. They must have been filming at Desilu because that's where my dad was working then. He'd see the actors in costume and would mention to me the guys with the funny ears. I'd heard about them so many times that by the time the show aired I thought, in true cynical teen style, "Oh, the guys with the funny ears" and dismissed it.

However, my dad had brought home a number of Star Trek scripts. I'd been reading scripts since I was about 6, so that was no big deal.  I still cringe when I think about this: I threw them out!! Yes, I had two or three of the original Star Trek scripts in my hands and I tossed them. Ugh! But nobody knew how popular the show would be or how collectables would appreciate. This was long, long before ANTIQUES ROADSHOW and collectables were a very limited market indeed. There aren't a lot of things I truly regret in life (things I had control over, anyway), but that is one of them.

TCB, I believe you said something the other night about having some difficulties with your first chapter. This is quite common. It's a matter of finding your voice--or the voice of the work you're writing. Once you find it I think things will move along more quickly.

Do not expect to write as quickly as BK! BK is an incredibly fast writer. Take your time and enjoy the process. I assume you have no published hounding you to meet a deadline. The best way to write, IMO.

Vibes you have a great time with it.

And now for something completely different, the new cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Magic To Do (http://castalbums.org/recordings/Magic-To-Do-2016-Original-Cast/32489/) has finally arrived!  It's essentially a musical review.  There are only 14 songs on the CD, and there's no synopsis or even a hint of what's supposed to be happening around the songs, but I enjoyed it as a short (47-minute) review.

Some years ago a friend of outposts was working for an organization that  ran the  Star Trek conventions around the country and he always arranged for us to be invited to the ones. That were organized in Manhattan

I do feel sorry for you about that. I wonder what I've tossed over the years that's worth something now.

I did go see Cafe Society, which I really enjoyed. Not top-drawer Woody Allen, but a really absorbing bittersweet comedy.

And the soundtrack was largely Rodgers and Hart, so who could have asked for anything more? (which is actually a Gershwin reference, I know).

Yet Stewart on Extras was played himself as an old lecher. Every scene had to be rewritten so more female nudity could be included. It was quite funny.

By far the most interesting to me was George Takei while he gave several well attended talks about Star Trek he also gave some smaller ones about the Japanese internment camps.  This was back in 2006  so the The Vixter was 13 going on14... After the talk he sat and spoke with just the two of us for30 to 45 minutes .

Richard and Rob attended at least 2 Star Trek conventions and I went with them to one.  At one they attended without me, Marina Sirtis spoke and Richard reported that pre-teen Rob was especially intrigued by her description of what she wore under her form-fitting costume.  When I went along, we heard George Takei speak and Rob won an autographed photo of Gates McFadden for answering trivia questions on stage.

And Rob told me earlier today that he went unprepared to a high school speech class, but based his extemporaneous speech on the previous night's Star Trek episode and got an A.

I seem to be surrounded by some pretty knowledgeable Trekkies here.

Which is a good thing, because it balances us all out.  For I know nothing -- and I do not exaggerate -- about STAR TREK or anything of its universe.  If someone's watching an episode on TV I'll sit and watch along, but without any idea of what it's really about and how these characters came to be who they are and what they're doing and where they're going.

I just never started, is all.  And then through subsequent seasons, and over the years, I just kept not starting.   :)

But guess what I did start ... just two hours ago.

No guesses?

TONY ROME.  Starring a Mr. Sinatra.

And did I love it, or what?  Oh baby, I love it.  It was the absolutely perfect thing for tonight, and I haven't had such silly fun watching this kind of movie in weeks or months.  What a find -- and I tip my hat to BK for the recent prose that got me off my duff for it.

Sometimes a thing is so bad it's good, and that's unfortunately a very overused expression these days.  But here we have some nice things surrounded by much that is indeed kind of bad, and the resulting mix turns out to be a clear winner.  I cannot wait to show this to a few people who I know will get the same kick out of it.  And of course I'll move on to LADY IN CEMENT, hopefully tomorrow evening.

It's been an all Indiegogo night.  Coming up with some fun perks.  Still hoping some dear readers will come in for the show.  I haven't done any of the unique to me perks - stuff from my collection, but I will.  I'll look for some art and perhaps some signed stuff from interesting folks, just like last time.  So, just waiting for the video, which I'll hopefully have tonight or in the morning.

Christian Carvajal (he directed "Laughing Stock" that I was in last year) said that he wanted to write three books:  one about religion, one about sex, and one about politics...essentially, the three things that you don't talk about if you don't want to get into arguments.  His first book was called Lightfall (https://www.amazon.com/Lightfall-Christian-Carvajal/dp/0982485522).  That was his religion book.

Topic of the Day:  my sister and I used to watch the original Star Trek series (in reruns) while we were growing up.  We've also (separately) watched all of the subsequnt TV series, and we've probably seen all the movies together.  I am definitely a fan, but not a fanatic.  I've never been to a ComiCon or dressed up as one of the characters, or read any of the books, but I watched all the TV shows.

I liked the reboot movies, but didn't love them.  They're too far removed from Gene Roddenberry's original vision of what the future could be.  They're pretty much just like any other action/adventure movie set in space, just with quasi-familiar characters.  But I'll still go to see them.
