There is a Victor Herbert newsletter published once a month by a well-meaning but pathetically misinformed person.  The October newsletter has a whole page on the 1903 Babes In Toyland, a show I know more about than anyone living, that completely boggled my mind with its massive amount of misinformation.

This newsletter is not what kept me awake.  I read it in my emails around 6:00 this morning.

Sunday morning greetings!  3/4 of our household is at church and I'm enjoying some solitude.  Later this afternoon I have to meet Robin at our friend Katie's house to get ready for tomorrow's Current Events Club meeting.  From there I'm going to Dayton for a retirement reception for the man who hired me at Dayton Metro Library in 1997.
Title: Re: SCHMALTZ HERRING
Post by: elmore3003 on October 02, 2016, 08:00:32 AM
Here's one example.  She writes:
It should be noted that Babes In Toyland was never meant to tour, and when it was forced to do so after only 198
performances, the very first thing to be cut was the "Prologue." It was too long, with too much scenery, and
impossible to stage at every Tom, Dick and Harry sort oftheatre encountered on a national tour.

FACT: Actually, the original production toured with this Prologue to New England in April-May 1904 after closing on Broadway, then broke for the summer.  The "Tour," which began in September 1904 was in reality two tours:
  1. The A Tour used the full production and toured with most of the original cast and the Prologue.  It toured from Sept. 1904 to May 1906!
  2.  B Tour, the second-class production,  cut the Prologue, made other changes to the book and song assignment, and toured with a 20-piece orchestra from Sept. 1904 to April 1906.

The show was meant to tour, as most shows did then, with the billing "Direct From Broadway!"  If a show succeeded or failed on Broadway, it could then tour with that billing.  The money was made on the road.

Well, I'm not bad (I know, just one man's opinion) --

For parody purposes, not political, I hope:

The Patty Duke Valley of the Dolls talk yesterday got me to put up a draft of the Patty Duke Show Theme Song parody I was working on.  It's about Trump, but in the hopes that won't be taken politically, here's the link to the video

We enjoyed the movie.  At times it was drawn out, still I was engaged in the movie.  My criticism of the film were the calls between Sully & his wife.   Had we gone to the IMAX theater to see this I am sure the landing in the Hudson scenes would have been even better than they are.

The extras with Chimes at Midnight are really good. Not as good as the movie, but that goes without saying.

One is an interview with Simon Callow, another with Welles' daughter, Beatrice, who played a page in the movie.

Sandy's mother used to make the very best Gefilte fish I have ever tasted.

She used a mix of white fish and salmon.

Give me a dish of Gefilte fish served with Matzah with unsalted butter and I was a happy camper.

I didn't work on my book today, because I wanted to wait and see what Betzy had to say about what I had written.

I guess she had some problems with her daughter, so her granddaughter was staying with her today.

Which is interesting since I didn't even have any rhythm until two or three weeks ago.

Another friend went to see Sully and enjoyed it, too.

I just haven't liked many of Clint Eastwood's movies lately. So I am still leaning toward waiting until it hits the library for that one.

If you are a Tom Hanks fan and are interested in seeing the landing in the Hudson on a big screen, go see it.  Otherwise wait.

Well, I have to go.  Tonight we have rehearsal, but I need to go to a couple of stores to see if I can get some cardboard blocks to be used as props for one of the shows.  Toys-R-Us and Target sell them on-line, but we'd like to get them sooner than what it would take to gave them shipped.  We'll see.

Be back later.

I went to Walmart, Target and Fred Meyer, looking for these little cardboard bricks to use as props, but no one (so far) has them in the stores.  They can be ordered, and shipped quickly, so I think that that's what we'll have to do.

Otherwise, the rehearsals went well.  The first show ended earlier than scheduled, so that's good.  But the second show took the full hour and a quarter.  So, we didn't get out early.  Oh, well. ::)

;)
