Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a horse named charley, and now it is time for you to post until the charley cows come home.

Interesting to read about J.D. Vance from the perspective of our very own HHW community.  I watched CNN a bit during the election period, and he was a very frequent (and seemed to be insightful) guest on several of the news shows, especially recently.

Weird dreams, one involving DR Elmore refusing to watch a 50" flat screen TV until they replace it with the promised 8-foot screen, another in which I was trying to remember Arthur Bliss's name (I'd awakened earlier in the morning and read the notes), another having something to do with a house (but it refuses to come into focus), and finally, one about the Encores! orchestra and 1776.

I've gotten charley horses in my calves from waking up, stretching and pointing my toes too hard in the process, causing a muscle spasm. I learned that the cure is to do just the opposite (which makes sense) - you flex your foot as hard as you can. It works! The muscle relaxes and the pain instantly goes away.

Today, we went and watched something most unusual. One of the merchants that we met out in the middle of nowhere invited us to join his family for their annual raki making.

Turkish raki is like ouzo. Cretan raki is more like vodka in that it is made with potatoes and the remains of the grapes from the winemaking (all the seeds, stems and skins). It's then distilled.

So, there we were with a bunch of mostly men who only spoke Greek, but we had Clairy to translate. There was also a family friend who had lived in London, so his English was fairly good.

Our host, Manolis, was working with his aunt, his father (who has brain cancer), his daughter, his nephew and a bunch of male friends. They had a beautiful copper still that was working overtime because they were going to make something like 75 gallons over the next two days.

Meanwhile, the party began. They brought out olives, their own of course. Then they used the coals from under the still to grill up lamb and potatoes.

They burnt most of the bread, but it tasted good with olive oil and lemon juice poured over it.

Of course, it takes raki to make raki, so we all shared a few shots as we talked and got to know each other a little.

On my part, very little because I don't even hear much of anything recognizable when they start talking Greek.

TOD:

I'm going out a limb here to mention Star 80, which I think is the strangest Fosse movie of his career. But I'm haunted by scenes in it. He managed to get magnificent performances from his actors and he framed the story well, but there are so many bad decisions, such as not using Bogdanovich's real name and story that it somehow cheapens it. Yet, cheap is part of the story. Sleaze, always near the surface in Fosse's work, is, too.

Yet, for somebody who reveled in sexual experiences and celebrated that in his work, the movie is puritanical.

And yet, I somehow can't get it out of my mind. And I haven't seen it in at least 20 years.

Here's what is now going on in Trump's America.  I only know officially one person on this board who voted for this creep, but anyone who voted for this piece of scum - who's had several opportunities since Tuesday to address this ugliness - is responsible for abetting this cruelty and ugliness.
Palm Desert - An older man at the DMV didn't want to wait in line. He loudly yelled "I'm so glad Trump was elected. He will put an end to the bulshit." And then said to the woman in front of him "And you need to get the hell out of here and go back to your country.
DeWitt, MI - Students formed a physical wall to block Latino kids from entering their school
Rochester NY - Pride flags were set on fire while they were still attached to people's homes.
At least 50 reported incidents of High School students ripping off girl's hijabs.
Cambridge - A postal worker in uniform, on the job, screamed at another male "Go back to your country. This is Trump land. You ain't getting your check no more."
Townson University - two black boys were followed on campus by a few white guys who repeatedly called them niggers.
Newtown High School - swastikas in the bathroom, hate messages against lgbt students, a Mexican student found a note in her backpack telling her to go back to Mexico.
A woman speaking to her deaf friend at a coffee shop was told "This is White America now. Take your retarded self and go somewhere else. Trump is president now.:
A Latina mom dropped of her son at school and a group of 5th graders surrounded him chanting "Build the wall, build the wall."
At the University of Minnesota, a student was stopped in her tracks by a man who got in her face and said "Go back to Asia." When she tried to walk away he yelled "Don't you know it's disrespectful to walk away from someone when they are talking to you?"
In Tuscaloosa, a dummy was lynched outside the window of a coffee shop.
New Jersey - students walked down the hall of a high school chanting "10 feet higher! 10 feet higher!" at Latino students
Pennsylvania - students chanted "cotton picker, you're a nigger. Heil Hitler"
Elon University
- "Bye Bye Latinos. Hasta la Vista" written on a classroom whiteboard
Redding, CA - students brought "deportation letters" for Latino students
Napa, CA - Man leaped out of his car at a gas station and stalked toward a smaller Asian woman saying "We won. Now get the fuck out of my country."
Simi Valley - A man at a 7-Eleven was told "you chinks need to get out of the country while you can because pure America is finally going to come back." For good measure, they also called the clerk "Bin Laden"
Southern Illinois University - Students put on blacface and posed in front of a Confederate flag to celebrate Trump victory.
A middle schooler was attacked called a "stupid Mexican boy" and told "I can't wait for Trump to deport you". The teacher told him if he fought back he would be suspended. The police told the mom "it's a school matter"
The prayer room for Muslim students at NYU was defaced with Trump graffiti
North Carolina - Note placed on a car saying "Can't wait until your 'marriage' is overturned by a real president. Gay families = burn in hell. Trump 2016
South Philadelphia - A woman's car was spray painted with "Trump Rules" and "Black Bitch"
Bloomington Indiana - Woman told "Fuck you nigger bitch. Trump is going to deport you back to Africa"
San Diego State University - Two students shouting about Trump confronted a woman and stole her purse, her backpack and then her car.
A woman was at Walmart when another woman came up the her, pulled off her Hijab and said "this is not allowed anymore, so go hang yourself with it around your neck not your head."
Minnesota - graffiti at a high school saying "fuck niggers" "white america" "Trump"
Delaware - a woman approached at a gas station by four men who said "how scared are you black bitch?? I should just kill you right now.. you're a wast of air." The walked away talking about how they won't have to deal with niggers much longer.
Virginia - A young muslim woman was assaulted getting out of her car. And verbally harassed throughout the day..
Central Florida - Graffiti in a high school bathroom saying "Y'all black people better start picking your slave numbers. KKK 4 life. Go Trump
Royal Oak Middle School - Student loudly chanting Build the Wall. Build the Wall.
York Tech High School PA - Student spit on. Called a nigger. Asian called Jap. Black student had his tires slashed. Students chanting white power and holding Donald Trump signs.
Woman in Queens told "Aren't you supposed to be sitting in the back of the bus now? Trump is president!"
House in Noe Valley now waving a Nazi flag in their front yard.
Alabama - A student brought a Trump sign in and told a black student it was time for him to get back in place.
West Valley City, UT - Kindergarteners saying they voted for Trump and teasing a Hispanic kid saying he's going to a different school and going to be deported.

The revival version of Pippin isn't licensed yet - but people have been adapting the current (Goodspeed) version to fit the revival.  Against the contract of course, and never a good idea to adapt any shows where you don't have the right materials.  (legally).   However, using a female as the leading player has been done even way before the revival.  However, it's a train wreck when you MD doesn't fix the keys.  It doesn't fit well for a woman's voice in the original keys.  There is nothing worse than a woman singing in a key that was written for man IN the man's range.  Or you could sing it up the octave which doesn't work either.  Which is the problem with Hello, Dolly as well as no one can sing in the published Carol Channing keys.  However, there are alternates available if you ask your licenser.

And that's all I'll say about THAT

I've been watching BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, a British series on Acorn TV. I didn't think it was my sort of thing, but I'm having a rather unplanned moratorium on my usual gritty drama and this is lighter. It has more substance than I gave it credit for at first. I find myself caring about some of the characters and looking forward to the rest of the series.

We have watched the first two episodes of season 3.  The series was cancelled and they wrapped up the ending on season 2, and then had a reprieve.  They made a few changes to the end of season 2, including adding a cliffhanger.  We first watched the "happy" ending and then correctly guessed what the changes would be-lol.

Saturday evening greetings!  After a terrible night's sleep, I spent another several hours helping at the Holiday Bazaar.  My shift was to end at 1pm, which meant I was there as people started gathering stuff up and not paying until the half-price sale began at 1.  They're like vultures, hoping to get a 50-cent ornament for a quarter.  I ended up staying until about 1:30 to help with the rush.

I love this quote by Abraham Lincoln, my childhood hero.

"Let us neither express, nor cherish, any harsh feeling towards any citizen who, by his vote, has differed with us. Let us at all times remember that all American citizens are brothers of a common country, and should dwell together in the bonds of fraternal feeling." - Abraham Lincoln

Unfortunately people didn't listen to him back then.

Well, this is interesting.  Today, I turned in the older model of my two DVRs.  Because of the Comcast "upgrade" (even though it's not really better is some respects), there were some channels that my older DVR no longer played correctly.  There was sound, but the screen was completely blank, so I finally needed to get it replaced.

The "new" DVR was shrink-wrapped and certainly looked new, but when I got it all set up, I looked through the options and there are more than 40, count 'em, FORTY movies and a few TV episodes already recorded on it!  AND there are 16 TV series set up to record, although some shows have ended.

Most of the movies are Hallmark channel movies.  I don't know what that's all about.  I can easily delete them, but it's just funny that so much is stuff is still on this DVR.  I wonder if this happens very often. :D

Nonsense.  I will not be back.

Wait. There's only one person on this board whom you know voted for Trump, and you are leaving?

This is one of the few places on the internet where politics were hardly ever discussed.

I was going to record it so that I could finally watch (or at least, start to watch) the London Miss Saigon Blu-ray.

I think maybe elmore thought my post was directed at him?  I don't know HOW he could think that, but I think he did.  Of course it was not and I just e-mailed him.  For heaven's sake I thought it was blatantly obvious I was talking about people who were being destructive - most of whom, BTW, aren't protestors at all, but idiot kids out to make trouble.  Someone besides me tell him that he's being really silly if he thinks my post was in response to his.  THIS is why I hate these kinds of posts here and why we do better when we don't do that.

After I finish what I'm reading now (Let Me Be Your Star (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DRONGF2/), a woman writes about being a recapper for the show, "Smash"), I'll read DGHDA.  I read it when it was first published, but not again.

She would watch the show "Smash" (in this case) and tweet about the show to keep the social media followers in the know and thereby keeping the show in the minds of people who are involved with social media, and/or post about it on an NBC blog to also keep the social media followers informed about the show.  Either way, I think that the idea is to keep people interested so that they would watch the TV show and keep it on the air...I guess.
