Well, you've read the notes, you know the deal, you know the routine, you know the thing, and now it is time for you to post until the cows, whom we hardly knew, to come home.

What kind of a fershluganah name is Acker Bilk? For one thing, it's backwards. It should be Bilk Acker. That sounds much better.
That's all I have to say about instrumental music for now.

My cousin in Switzerland sent me a box of champagne truffels as a housewarming gift. It arrived today. I've eaten almost half the box, dear readers. Somebody stop me!
-
And continuing in my chocolate induced monologue... I received good news today. I got my next writing gig. And a good on it is, too.

Instrumentals? Nothing personal, but I was never a fan of instrumental music in general...still ain't (I like vocals). There are some that I really like, but they're usually instrumental versions of vocal music. Like the Sondheim Suite of Dances that was arranged/orchestrated for the Book of the Month Records Sondheim recording. But that's not a "pop instrumental," so it doesn't count for today's Topic of the Day.
One that I did like growing up was the disco version of the theme from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." I remember buying that vinyl album when I was in high school and inside the big album there was a 7 inch record that had the disco version, which wasn't on the regular album at all. I didn't understand that at the time....that it was a bonus mini-album. I haven't checked but as far as I know, I still have it.
-
And continuing in my chocolate induced monologue... I received good news today. I got my next writing gig. And a good on it is, too.
Congratulations!! ;D ;D

Instrumentals:
Wonderland By Night - Bert Kaempfert
Theme from "East Of Eden" - Dick Jacobs
Maria Elena - Los Indios Tabajaras
Third Man Theme - Anton Karas
Tracy's Theme - Spencer Ross
Terry's Theme from "Limelight" - Frank Chacksfield
Albatross - Fleetwood Mac
Petite Fleur - Chris Barber
Look For A Star - Billy Vaughn

Great news DR Panni. Congratulations. Nobody knows the truffles you've seen.

Now it's almost 12:30 a.m. and I have to pay my bills. I pay most of them on-line, but individually at each utility's website. Otherwise, I only write two checks a month (for bills). So, goodnight all!
-
Okay, I also did like Frank Mills' "Music Box Dancer." I learned to play this when I took piano lessons...low these many years ago (t's been almost 20 since I had actual lessons). I couldn't play it now to save my life. Oh, well! ::)
-
The power of the Internet? Remember DerB's popcorn-stuffing recipe? The one that Danise e-mailed to her friends? Today it was e-mailed to me - verbatim - from a friend in Honey Harbour, Ontario.
-
As a yoot, I also enjoyed listening to "instrumentals." One of my favorites was a Mantovani LP that featured Oliver on one side, and Stop the World I Want to Get Off on the other.
-
The only instrumental that comes to mind right now is "Popcorn" from the 70s. Urk!
-
Okay, that solid steel door on that part of my brain just squeeked open a bit and I remember two more: "Love Is Blue" and the Theme to Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet (not sure if that was actually called "A Time for Us" or not.)
-
Good morning, all! I just finished reading the remainder of yesterday's posts, so I wanted to add one more great Christmas play I cannot believe I forgot:
THE BUSINESS OF GOOD GOVERNMENT by John Arden, a British one-act published in the late 1960s by Grove Press; King Herod's dilemma: it's the business of good government to ensure peace on earth, but it's just not possible. It's a wondefyl piece.
Secondly, Nurse Jane, I'm sending out good vibes and wishes for Echo! I may even go over to the Catholic Church across the street and light a candle!
Today's topic: the first instrumentals I remember hearing are "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" and "The Poor People of Paris." I believe my favorite, which got some airplay in the mid-1960s, is the Boston Pops wonderful version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand."

TOD:
For some reason, the only pop instrumentals I can remember were by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. I still like the theme from Casino Royale.
-
I remember one Christmas at work, when I put together a tape of Christmas music from my collection of holiday CDs. Some of the women I worked with were furious with me, absolutely furious, because the entire tape was instrumentals. They Wanted VOCALS!
Can you guess how impressed I was by their expressions of displeasure? :-\
(For what it's worth, all I had in my collection at the time were instrumentals. 8))
*****
"When I OUT together a tape?" Edit time! ;D
-
Well, my faves were already mentioned: Theme from "A Summer Place," and just about anything by Herb Alpert and the TB (but especially "Casino Royale" and "Spanish Flea"). If they count, I would also like to include "String of Pearls" and "In the Mood." I know there are lyrics to "In the Mood," but it seems more famous in its instrumental version. And I seem to remember a treasure trove (or at least a Reader's Digest collection) of things by Percy Faith, Kostelanetz, the Boston Pops, and possibly Mantovani being played in our house as a youth.
-
Oh, and congratulations to DR Panni on her new gig.
-
And vibes to DR Jane's dear canine, Echo.

Okay, I also did like Frank Mills' "Music Box Dancer."
I met a boy named Frank Mills on September 12th, right here in front of the Waverly. But unfortunately I lost his address.
-
DR Jose asked many questions about my pork roast. I will try to answer.
Was it a pork loin roast?
1 1/2 hours sounds like it should have done the trick, but there are some variables to consider.
What temperature did you cook it at?
-I've been using the method suggested in The Joy of Cooking where you start the roast off at 450F for the first fifteen minutes, and the lower the over to 250F for another hour and a half or so. PLUS, then letting the roast rest to finish cooking outside the oven - residual hear and all. And that's usually for a five-pounder.
What kind of pan did you cook it in?
-If the sides are too high, then the heat cannot circulate properly around the roast. The size of the roasting pan is usually not a major factor, but sometimes...
Did you take the roast right from the fridge and put it in the preheated oven?
-Now this is something I've learned over the past few years, and I've finally learned to "deal with it", and let all my fears dealing with food safety go by the wayside... When cooking a chunk of meat - whether it's beef, lamb, pork, even turkey and chicken - it helps to let the piece of meat warm up a little bit before placing it in the oven. I'm not saying to leave it out until it comes to room temperature, but just long enough to take the chill off the outside. This way the piece of meat and the oven doesn't go into "shock". Does this make sense? And sometimes, a very cold piece of meat can cook all right on the outside, but the inside may still be underdone at the same time.
Did you use a marinade or rub?
-Just curious.
And when you say "way underdone" do you mean as is visibly still raw, or with just a bit of pink in it?
-I like my pork on the pink side - as long as the internal temp is around 155-160. The USDA recommended temps of 170-185, just simply ruin a good cut of pork. Again, a good rest after the pork comes out of the oven is a good thing. Just take the pork out of the oven when it's around 148-150, tent it with foil, then let it sit on the counter for about 10-15 minutes. -You can make the gravy during that time! The roast should come up to temperature as it sits.
I cooked it at 350F. And yes I had a marinade and kept taking it out to baste it. Also (and I'm not sure if this was a factor), but the person I was cooking it for was late. So I took the roast out of the oven completely for like 25 minutes in the middle. Is that very bad?
It was a regular roasting pot (not high edges) and sitting on a metal roasting rack.
Yes, I did take it out of the fridge first, but only for like 20 minutes.
Yes, it was underdone as in raw near the bone. And I don't have an oven thermometer. Is that something I need?
Thanks for your help. I rarely cook roasts. So I figured 1 1/2 hours seemed like plenty of time! :(
-
DR Jane, you mentioned last night you won't watch DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Is that by principle or have you watched it (and didn't like it)?

Yes, you need an oven thermometer. An instant-read thermometer works best. Just remember not to insert it so it touches the bone, or it will give a false reading.
The internal temp of meat is the best way to check for doneness. Time is just one factor for getting there.

I always enjoyed the overture to Tommy, by The Who.
I don't enjoy much in that score, have never seen the musical, but remember when this overture was just another top 40 hit. I used to play it on the piano.

What a wonderful TOD. Pop/Rock instrumentals are my favorite musical pleasures! And I could fill pages and pages with the titles of my favorites, but here are some that come to mind right now:
Classical Gas by Mason Williams
Theme to A Summer Place by Percy Faith
Poor People of Paris by Les Baxter
Quiet Village by Les Baxter
The Happy Organ by Dave "Baby" Cortez
Grazing in the Grass by Hugh Masekela
Hustle by Van McCoy
Baby Elephant Walk by Herb Alpert and the Tijusana Brass

It's hard to believe Generation F'd opens on Sunday. Will we be ready? Will any of my songs be cut? Will the piano be in tune? What tremendous changes will be wrought between the shows on the 5th and the 13th? The fun part's over - and by that I mean the experimentation, the improvisations, the explorations of doing things every which way, and the writing. Sunday's going to be a mighty long day: our first time in the space (Barrow), all the teching, a run-through or two, and the two shows.

Then, Wednesday the 8th at 8:30, the improvised-before-your-very-eyes musical revue, And Then He Wrote - Songs of Squeaky Klein plays at the 78th Street Theatre Lab (just East of Broadway, over Stand-Up New York) in which our first-ever "advanced class" in song improv gets to strut its stuff. I think we're cutting the barbershop quartet. Safe to say you've never seen anything like it.

I liked "Last Date" by Floyd Cramer and the aforementioned "Strangers on the Shore." I also like "Calcutta' by Lawrence Welk. Yep, anything by Tijuana Brass was aces (especially "A Taste of Honey") and going back before my time but enjoyed by me to this day, anything by Glenn Miller.

Working in retail for many years (I try to forget) I found that if a clerk is rude, simply telling the clerk that he or she is acting rude will quickly remedy the situation...and cause great embarrassment for said clerk...I have seen it happen! (not to me, fortunately). When the customer is rude back it quite often compounds the situation and makes the clerk feel as though they were right in being rude.
Just my 2 cents worth.
-
Wow! I come back to my office after a meeting and what do I find on my desk but two mysterious packages. One contains my DeepDiscountDVD order (can't wait to watch New York In the Fifties!) The other is my sparkling prize from BK for the trivia contest--Astrud Gilberto's Windy CD! The cover art is very striking. I'll be playing this one this afternoon. Thanks very much, BK!
-
Thanks for the congrats, DRs George, Tom and Stuart.
Danise - Re chestnuts and salt. IMHO, chestnuts don't need salt. In Europe (Hungary, anyway) nobody puts salt on chestnuts. But forget Europe - who needs them foreign types? - when you buy a bag of roast chestnuts on the street in NY or anywhere else in the good old US of A that they have the good sense to sell them, they aren't salted. Try them without salt and see what you think.

It's beautiful and sunny this morning in the City of Studio. But quite crisp. I wore a toque, scarf and gloves for my early morning walk. And I slipped on a patch of black ice!
Now I shall cleanse my aching bones (from my other slip last night - I was carrying a new piece of furniture upstairs and lost my balance -- didn't fall, which was next to miraculous -- but dinged the furniture and dinged me), have some coffee and get to writing.

Jennifer, you really should get yourself an instant-read thermometer. Even for things like chicken breasts or any other non-roast meats. You could potential become very very sick if you eat undercooked pork or chicken and the thermometer is the best way to find out when something is good to serve.

Well when I sliced the pork I saw right away that it was undercooked. So I simply microwaved it a bit.
As for chicken breast, hmmm ... for some reason I've never had problems with that. I find it if I cook it for an hour it's always good.
But I will look into getting the thermometer. But then I will need to find out the correct temperatures for each food item. :)

Well, Les Baxter may have started it all, but Martin Denny put the frosting on the cake:
"Quiet Village," 1951
Music by Les Baxter
Quiet Village" epitomizes exotica. Written by Les Baxter for his 1951 concept album, "The Ritual of the Savage," it became a Top 40 hit in 1959 when Martin Denny played it on his breakthrough album, "Exotica."

Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White

Theme from "A Summer Place"
Classical Gas
The Alley Cat

The Syncopated Clock
-
I thought I had seen enough of Hair (three stage productions, plus the film) to last me a lifetime, but I see there's one other production I am very, very, very (that's three verys) sorry I missed!
-
Ah, yes, Martin Denny...wonderful! And Billy May! I love Billy's HERE IN MY CASTLE OF QUIET or something like that. It has lots of space-like theremin music in it.
It is too bad that the top 40 never has any instramentals anymore...there were lots in the 70s and 80s that were a lot of fun. But once the 90s started, well, I can't think of any.

I always wondered whether the title "The Poor People of Paris" wasn't a [possibly intentional] mistranslation of the original song title by René Rouzaud and Marguerite Monnot, "La goualante du pauvre Jean", since the name Jean and the word gens [people] sound identical. François?
And could our Dear Parisian Reader or anyone else elucidate on the word goualante? It appears to mean something like ballad, but I cannot find it in any on-line French-English Dictionary.

I don't have time to read the notes and posts because of the term papers that are eating me alive, but I just wanted to share my great news. My term paper from HEL has had its due date pushed back three whole days. Woo hoo!! Cherry Coke for everybody!

DRPanni, I totally missed your new gig. Best of luck with it. What is a toque for a walk? Hickory Dickory?
-
Jennifer - a meat thermometer is no biggie. You can get one fairly cheaply at any supermarket or general merchandise store. And they indicate, usually right on the thermometer, what the temperatures should be for different kinds of meats. So you don't have to go researching that.
-
Dan (the Man): Thanks for the LeRoy Anderson site. Amazing how many of his pieces I knew by sound but not by name.

You didn't miss anything, DRLarry. I just said that I had a new gig. Thank you for the good wishes.

Of course.....The Stripper was written/recorded by Mr David Rose who was the conductor for the Red Skelton Show, the theme of which was Holiday for Strings also composed by David Rose.....makes perfect sense to me.
Red Skelton joke: David Rose sat on a tack. David rose.

Oh no, DR ElMore. It's the old one about the doctor who stopped by the bar every day after work for a daquiri with a cherry in it. One evening the bartender ran out of cherries, so he put in a nut. "What's this," asks the doctor. "A hickory daquiri, Doc," quoth the barkeep.

Good Morning! Ummm... Good Afternoon!
Well, I guess I've finally "graduated" to the ranks of those people who need eight hours of sleep. No matter what time I end up going to bed lately, I end up waking up eight hours later. Even when I really want to wake up "earlier". Gone are the days of living off of four to six hours of sleep. However, rehearsals do start up again on Thursday, so... In any case...
Topic of the day:
Ditto
Actually, although it may just be a good piece of music to some people rather than an "instrumental", I'll add "Linus and Lucy" to the mix. -And the rest of the Vince Guaraldi compositions for the Charlie Brown cartoons. A Charlie Brown Christmas is one of my all time faves. Otherwise...
"Popcorn" - I remember dancing to this in grade school gym classes. I guess it was sort of a warm-up to "Rock Lobster".
"A Fifth of Beethoven"... oh, and that other 70's radio hit, "Shaker Song" by Spyro Gyra.
-
Here is the hainsies/kimlets assignment for the day. There's going to be a giveaway contest for Writer's Block. We have to come up with a quiz for it - so, I want the quiz to be things that would concern the musicals of 1969. Obviously, no one who contributes to the quiz will be able to enter the contest. So, come up with excellent brain teasers - there were lots of flops that year, all of which are mentioned in the book, so that's good. Make each question simple to understand and so that the answer can be short and to the point. In other words, not like my Unseemly Trivia questions. An example, although this is too simple: What star of what hit musical running in 1969 would go on to star in a hit television series which spawned many spinoffs?
-
Yup DtM - the Leroy Anderson site was great! I have his CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG LP (LA and his singers) and I still love to listen to it.
-
"Wipeout!"
How could I have forgotten "Wipeout" and "Tequila"? I also thought of another Christmas film I love: THE REF. It always reminds me of the Christmas my brother and sister-in-law were late and my insane mother chased them into the yard throwing their gifts at them.

Why a toque is that fancy-schmancy term a la Francaise for a chef's hat. You know, the big white ones with the "fluff" at the top.
;)
Actually, some "Top Ten" restaurant lists, sometimes use the phrase "Top Toques" since they're praising the cooking of the chef, rather than the restaurant per se.
-Did that make sense? I'm no sure...

Why a toque is that fancy-schmancy term a la Francaise for a chef's hat. You know, the big white ones with the "fluff" at the top. ;)
And then if you change the spelling, it has an entirely different meaning, such as in the sentence, "Care to par-toke?" ;)

Was it a Swedish tocque, or an Hungarian tocque?

What kinds of food would I use the oven thermometer for? I've never used one. And like I said, I rarely cook roasts.
An oven thermometer is good for checking the temp of all sorts of meats, and not just in the oven. If you're unsure about a piece of chicken, for example, all you have to do is stick the probe into the bird and you'll get it's temperature. I used one just a few days ago, when I was cooking that ham in water. I didn't want the water to be boiling, just simmering, so I hung the thermometer so that the probe was in the water (but not in the ham) and could regulate the temperature that way.
Then again, there's also a device known as an oven thermometer, which is used to measure the temperature inside the oven itself. This is handy if you have an older oven, since the heating elements get less reliable as ovens age. The thermometer is set in the oven, on one of the racks, and you get the reading of the inside temperature. Handy gadget.
I suggest going to your local kitchen supply store, and asking about what they have. You'll get much more reliable results when you do.

DR Jose asked many questions about my pork roast. I will try to answer.I cooked it at 350F.
350 is always a good, safe temp for roasting.
As for basting, it's usually best not to baste until a good 30-40 minutes into the cooking time. You have to make sure that the outside of the meat has cooked/sealed. -Which is part of the reasoning behind starting the roast at a higher temp inititially, and then going "low and slow" after that. I know it was "fashionable" to baste meat every 10-15 minutes, but all that does is prevent the piece of meat and the oven from maintaining a constant temperature. It usually takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes for an oven to come back up to temp after the over door has been opened, so... If you feel you must baste, do it as quick as possible.
I would have left the roast in the oven. Taking it out of the oven most likely had some effect on the cooking time and doneness. Additionally, that could have been dangerous since it would have allowed the roast to sit at an unsafe temperature which could have made the roast a breeding ground for some not so nice things. -Did you cover it the roast with foil when you took it out to keep the heat in?
The time out of the fridge was good.
An instant-read thermometer is a worthwhile and relatively cheap investment. There are "analog" ones as well as some fancy and very fancy digital and electronic models. Or, if you're feeling really ambitious, you could get one of those laser-type ones that are used to check oven temps. The basic "pen-type" should be fine, and they usually run around $10.00. There are a few models out there, and look for one with a dial that will be easiest for you to read. They are also very easy to recalibrate should they get out of whack with a turn of the "nut" on the back of the dial with a wrench.
Just keep in mind that a meat thermometer and an instant-read thermometer are two different creatures. Most meat thermometers are meant to be inserted into the meat for a time while the meat cooks. Instant read thermometers are just that, instant read. Stick the probe in, wait a few seconds, check the temp, take it out.
You can use an instant read thermometer to check the doneness of beef, pork, lamb, chicken, turkey, etc. It also work for checking loaves of bread if your "tap" sense has not been fully finessed. And if you're making a custard or some other egg-based sauces, it's a good way of checking to make sure you've brought the eggs up to a "cooked" temp.
...But a meat thermometer will only run you a few bucks more.
As for being raw near the bone... That's a normal "problem". Sometimes it means the piece of meat was not fully defrosted before being put in the oven - was it frozen before? And sometimes it means that the meat should have stayed in the oven a bit longer. Did you roast your roast bone-down? For pork loin roasts, a rack isn't always necessary since the roast can rest on it's own "chine bone" and serve as it's own rack. This way the heat from the pan goes directly into the bone, helping to cook the roast from the direction.
Next topic... Braising!

Oh, and a few more words about basting...
I can't remember which cookbook/treatise I read a few years ago, but the author pointed out the obvious: The only thing basting really does is to continue seasoning the outside of the meat, chicken, etc. It will help add some color and flavor to the "crust", but it won't really help season the inside of the meat. Ideally, by the time you start basting, the outside is cooked and sealed enough so that the juices inside the meat stay inside the meat.
And looking at some "recent" recipes for roasts and poultry, I don't think I've seen any directions to "baste" lately. Usually, the marinade, rub, oil, pieces of bacon(!), etc. will help keep the meat moist.

Sadly, this doesn't work in reverse. A clerk is never allowed to tell the customer that he/she is being rude. A customer is ALWAYS allowed to be rude, and some view it as being their perogative.
Kicking the customer in the shins is not approved behavior, either. Darn them, darm them all to heck. (Swearing is also on the no-no list.)

This morning we had snow which made Echo very happy. Not too much she couldn’t walk in it, just the right amount. It is melting now which is fine with me as long as we don’t have ice in its place.
Matt H staying healthy vibes to you and your cast.
td great page six dance last night.
TCB-great pic of you as Scrooge. I wish I could see you perform in person.

Thanks DRs SWW And Jose.
Wow, DR Jose, I need to read what you wrote again, but thanks.
The meat was not frozen beforehand. And no I didn't cover it with foil while it was out of the oven. Although it was only out for about 20-25 minutes.
And I'm not 100% sure if the bone was down. It may have rotated when I basted.
Okay, so question. What would you have done if you had started cooking a roast and then 3/4 through you find out that the person coming to eat it will be delayed by 1/2 hour.
Would you just cook it for the 1 1/2 hours, and then check it, and then turn the oven on "warm"?

And continuing in my chocolate induced monologue... I received good news today. I got my next writing gig. And a good one it is, too.

Shopping help:
What do I need to know about buying an Ipod? Yes, the intended recipient has an Apple computer.
Is one of those plane ticket websites better than the others? It's for a domestic round trip, no hotel.
DR Noel-
All you need to know about an iPod is how much money you want to spend. The more storage/song space on the iPod, the more expensive it is. Apple also just came out with a mini-iPod - smaller profile, some additional color choices.
You're best option may be to get one of the mid-level models and then includes some extra goodies with it: some iTunes gift certificates, a set of the really cool looking earphones, the external-attachable microphone (very handy for rehearsals!), etc. Just spend some time with the salesman at your local Mac Store. I'm pretty sure they'll be more than happy to help you out.
Or just check out:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/ (http://www.apple.com/ipod/)
*Luckily (?), since it's Apple/Mac, there's no real price competition to worry about, although some resellers have specials where they offer some extras, but the base price set by Apple is the price you'll find it... everywhere.
Mid-afternoon update: After checking the Apple Store site, it seems that Apple has "upgraded" their iPods, and there are now only three models - and three price points - available now. iPod mini; iPod 20G; iPod 40G - G=Gigabyte. Oh, there is the Limited U2 Special Edition which comes preloaded with all the songs of U2 on it, but something tells me that might not be what you're looking for.
As for plane ticket sites... I usually consult Travelocity, Orbitz, etc. initially to get an idea of which airlines have the best deals. Then I go to each individual airline's site and purchase the ticket there. I've always gotten "the best" price that way. In fact, most airline sites guarantee that you'll find the best price on their website. Yes, some consolidators may have better prices, but sometimes those savings are only a few dollars. -And be sure to register for each airlines freqent flyer program. You may end up getting a better deal that way too.
-This process may take a couple of extra minutes, but it's worth it in the long run.

DR Jose, that is interesting about basting. The recipe I was sort of following (and is new) mentioned basting often. So that's why I did it!
Then baste away!
Again, basting is not a bad thing. It just can get in the way sometimes, so to speak. Like I mentioned before, just make sure to do it as quickly as possible so you don't let so much heat out of the oven. I used to be very anal about basting - I had to make sure I drizzled or spooned the fat and pan juices over the entire surface of what I was cooking. Five minutes later after having the oven door open all the time... Not good. It's better to take the roast out of the oven, set it on the counter, close the over door, baste, then reverse.

The meat was not frozen beforehand. And no I didn't cover it with foil while it was out of the oven. Although it was only out for about 20-25 minutes.
Covering is will the better option, as it will keep the meat from losing it's heat. Normally, a roast is only left to rest for fifteen minutes, which lets the internal temp equalize. After that, it's all lost energy, which just has to be regained.
Okay, so question. What would you have done if you had started cooking a roast and then 3/4 through you find out that the person coming to eat it will be delayed by 1/2 hour.
Would you just cook it for the 1 1/2 hours, and then check it, and then turn the oven on "warm"?
Cooking and keeping warm would have been the better idea. Best, of course, is to have a shotgun handy, so that your guests get the message. :o

Amazing that I forgot any of Leroy Anderson's symphonic pieces because I adore them. My favorites are "Sarabande" and "Belle of the Ball." "Sleigh Ride" is also a must for this time of year.
Another instrumental I enjoyed as a young teen was "Telstar" by the Ventures.

I’m sorry you fell on black ice, something I never heard about until I moved to the east coast. What native Southern Californian ever says black ice?
But don't you remember that episode of CHIPS were Ponch was investigating a freak, multi-car accident? After checking out all the possibibilities, they just couldn't explain why the car veered off the road. But then when they realized what time of day the accident occured, and where it occured... And then, thankfully, they took into account - at the last moment! - that the sun was rising at a different time then when the accident occured, they were able to reconstruct the accident properly... Which allowed them to determine that the culprit was black ice and not driver error? It was an accident plain and simple. Most importantly, they prevented an innocent man from going to jail.
...Well, I remembered it..

DR Jose, yeah, I always close the oven while basting.
DR Jane, I don't think you should lump all shows of a certain kind together. For instance The Amazing Race is not typical reality tv.
As for Desperate Housewives, I don't find it trashy at all. And I actually don't find it that similar to most of the night-time soaps of the past. It's very funny, witty and charming. I suppose it might be hard to figure things out if you were to tune in now. But it never hurts to at least watch something once to be sure it's not your cup of tea.
Btw, I got this email today for merchandise for DH and LOST: http://www.abc.com/email/abcstore/holiday04

Actually, only one woman is having an affair (the Hispanic woman with her 17 year old Caucasian gardener). The others are either married (happily or un) or not married but wanting to date or just "hook up" with the cute plumber who's not quite who he seems to be. ;)

Ha, ha! No, only one wife is having an affair...it really is campy fun...not really a drama, not really a comedy, sort of a mystery...just lots of fun entertainment!
...but I know what you mean. One reason I haven't watched LOST or JOAN OF ARCADIA is because I didn't want to get hooked on too many weekly shows...and both looked like shows I would want to not miss. I did make the mistake of watching COLD CASE last Sunday and now I want to watch it regularly!

"Desperate Housewives" is da bomb!
Totally riveting. It's truly one of the hour's of my week that seems like minutes.
All the stars are riveting, the plot is twisting so grandly, and with such macabre glee, that I can honestly say I haven't enjoyed a series this much since the third and fourth and fifth seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (the greatest series EVER, IMO).
"Lost" isn't far behind in its ability to mesmerize me...but it's in a different way entirely.
-
Well, I have some bad news for you.. It's always been "prerogative" even though it's pronounced like "perogative" most of the time.
Words, words, words....
Err...umm....make that "MIS-pronounced most of the time."
The "r" following the "p" is supposed to be sounded.
But we live in a world where most folks say they "could care less" when the true sentiment is "COULDN'T care less."
If you "could care less," there's no point in saying the phrase at all. It implies that you "care" a bit.
:D

All things are personal preference these days...like running red lights; throwing trash on the highway; etc., etc.
You can be named "Bucket" and pronounce it "bouquet"...but folks who know better still laugh at you behind your back.
I have an acquaintance whose pride in life is correcting others folks' grammar and pronunciation. It's rude and annoying and grates on most of us.
Yet, he pronounces the perfectly wonderful French work "outrè" as "out-tray." He uses the word a lot. His associates who know better (i.e., it's pronounced "ooh-tray") haven't corrected him as that, in their minds, is bad manners. I haven't corrected him because it pleases me not to.
I'd love to be there when he learns the correct pronunciation of it.

Eventually, you give up.
One of my favorite episodes of "Friends" contained the following exchange:
Joey: All right, Rach. The big question is, "does he like you?" All right? Because if he doesn't like you, this is all a moo point.
Rachel: Huh. A moo point?
Joey: Yeah, it's like a cow's opinion. It just doesn't matter. It's moo.
Rachel: Have I been living with him for too long, or did that all just make sense?
:D
-
8-D I try, I try.
ALERT ALERT ALERT ALERT
JEOPARDY FANS DO NOT MISS TONIGHT'S EPISODE!!!!!!!
My lips are sealed.
Ah... Which I guess also explains tonight's guest line-up on Letterman... Hmm...
-
I've already seen today's Jeopardy. I thought the answer to the Final Jeopardy question was "What is the Chia Pet company?" I was wrong.
Now I get to do homework. :(

I've already seen today's Jeopardy. I thought the answer to the Final Jeopardy question was "What is the Chia Pet company?" I was wrong.

SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!! DON'T FORGET THE SPOILER ALERT!
;D
-
OK.
SPOILER ALERT!!
The answer to today's Final Jeopardy question is not "What is the Chia Pet company?"
-
DRNOEL - I forgot to tell you....for airline fares you might also check
WWW.HOTFARES.COM
That site compares about 20 different flights to your destination and you can choose the one that you like best.
And remember on The Grace L. Ferguson Airline & Storm Door Company, you have to hang onto the straps during takeoff...except you people flying tourist....you don't have any straps.
-
OK.
SPOILER ALERT!!
The answer to today's Final Jeopardy question is not "What is the Chia Pet company?"
Thank you. Much, much, much better now.
:-*

The power of the Internet? Remember DerB's popcorn-stuffing recipe? The one that Danise e-mailed to her friends? Today it was e-mailed to me - verbatim - from a friend in Honey Harbour, Ontario.
That back firing bird sure does get around, huh? ;D
-
WOW - 7 pages of posts before 5:0pm PST, I'm amazed. My 1st and 5th graders performed today, they were very good as well as my 12 voice choir made up of 4-7 graders. My 5th graders sang a truncated version of "Turkey Lurkey Time" about a 5th lower than normal and with out the dance part!!! They had great enthusiasm and the audience loved it. I began with "The 5th graders will now sing a song from everyone's favorite Broadway musical, 'Promises Promises'" <silence> Can't win 'em all, I suppose.

Next Monday, Dec. 6, the USA Network is showing the Kelsey Grammer CHRISTMAS CAROL. I, of course, will miss it because of Mr Kimmel's reading and the PARTAY after!
-
Fav instrumentals:
Pink Panther theme
The Love Theme from Love Story
Theme From Somewhere in Time
-
DR MattH
I am embarrassed to ask but the person in the lower right hand of the photo is it a man or a woman?
-
SPeaking of the newest TV version of "A Christmas Carol"... I happened to really enjoy it. Maybe it was my over enthusiastic excitement of seeing Claire Moore, whom I absolutely LOVE in anything she's sung, but I REALLY liked "A Christmas Carol" for what it was. Not for what I wanted it to be. It was not the FInney version, it was not the Muppet version, I felt it stood fine on its own.
-
As for Jeopardy the cat is already out of the bag. It had already been announced what happens since the show is tapped well ahead of time. But my lips are sealed.

Here's a little musical puzzle for y'all:
Listed below are series of numbers and letters which are really titles of songs from musicals. For example, D: 10; L: 3 would be "Dance: 10; Looks: 3 from A CHORUS LINE and 2 L S would be "Two Lost Souls" from DAMN YANKEES. Don't post any answers right away--let everyone have a crack at it. I'll post the answers tomorrow night.

2. 1 N I B
3. A A Q T 9
4. 2 L I D S O D B T
5. 6 M O O E Y

7. T A 8
8. 5 Z
9. 1 M K
10. 4 J I A R B
11. O T N O A 1,000 S
12. I T 2

DR Dan (the Man) - Great puzzle! Perfect for the commercial breaks during tonight's "Jeopardy". :)
-
Jennifer I was under the impression the women are running around having affairs. Am I mistaken?
You are right about watching something before judging it. I just don't have the time to watch everything, plus there are two of us choosing our evening viewing. When Keith traveled I could watch anything I wanted but no longer.
DR Jane, I don't really know your taste in tv shows, so I cannot say for sure if you would like DH. All I can say is that EVERY single person I know who watches it raves about it.
There are 4 WOMEN who are the main characters. And yes one of them (Eva Longoria) is unhappy and having an affair with her gardener.
Another one is divorced (Teri Hatcher). The third is happily married with 4 small children (Felicity Huffman (sp?). And the fourth is going through marriage counselling (Marcia Cross).
As others have said it's really part comedy and part mystery. There truly is nothing like it on television.
It is definitely my favorite show of the new season.
-
Yes tonight's Jeopardy results have been well publicized. I'd heard about it this morning (well to watch tonight). I did watch the end and it was mildly interesting.
Btw, I believe Ken Jennings will be on Regis and Kelly tomorrow morning.
-
Good vibes to Dear Dog Echo and the caregivers. They all need all of their strength!
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[/move]
Congrats to DR Panni and her new gig!
I like Building The Barn from Witness., The theme from Conan: The Barbarion, the theme from Beauty and The Beast the tv show not the play or the Disney version. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head but I’m sure that there are many, many more.
Tubular Bells is my cell phone ring. Seems fitting. Some how. I sure do get some looks when it goes off and people recognize it.
DR Panni, I shall have to try the chestnuts without salt. Only do them that way because that’s the way my Mom taught me to make them. I never considered just roasting them.
I enjoyed seeing the picture of DR TCB in is role as Scrooge! I know what you thought I was going to say!
I agree with Jane about DESPARATE HOUSEWIVES. I never watch it either. I’ve seen all I want to see on the commercials. I just do not think I would enjoy that type of show. If I told you all of the shows that I have never watched, I think you would be amazed.
Just saw the end of Jeopardy! :o :) ;)
-
DtM - now my head is spinning.
you know, right brain/left brain - either you get it or you don't....grrrrrrrrrr
-
I got two of them.
-
If you were Fraulein Schnieder, DR JRand54, your head vould be schpinning
-
It is definitely my favorite show of the new season.
DRJennifer, mine, too!
-
Indeed DRMATTHEW - I loved your song intro!
-
This may be a stupid question, but... Is that you in the pic, TCB?
Yes, Panni, that is me in the SCROOGE picture last night. BTW (By The Way in internet lingo) it was the newspaper that was all wrinkled, not my body!
-
CONGRATULATIONS, PANNI!
[/font][/size][/color]
-
I got two of them.
I know this is cheating, but www.castalbumdb.com helps!
-
By the way (BTW, in Internet lingo), if you've finished Writer's Block and enjoyed it, then please do a review for amazon.com, being VERY careful not to divulge any of the book's secrets. I'd appreciate it.
Welcome to Evelyn - come on in, we're very friendly, as you can tell, and we'd love you to post. No biting, we promise.
-
I sent BK 3 questions as he asked. I hope they aren't too easy. I did some research before I put them together.
-
MBarnum we have stopped watching JOAN OF ACADIA. It seems to have lost its sense of humor and is too serious now.
RLP Echo reaches her paw back to Vickie the amazing cat.
Yes Danise we need our strength, especially Keith who has taken over their care. His patience with Echo is beautiful.
Jennifer maybe we will watch when the reruns begin, if you can remind me then.
-
Hi Penny.
-
Favorite instrumental a hundred years ago: A Summer Place. Oh my! I can still hear it.
It's great to be back in New York!!
-
Gosh, did i start Page 8???
-
Still trying to find a sublet - our own dear BK has hooked me up with a possibility. Also trying to hook up with a press rep. Tried to get through to Adrian Bryan-Brown of Boneau/Bryan-Brown... office bimbo instructed me to send particulars by email to HER - and if she thinks I'm anyone, sh might forward it to Adrian B-B. Sheesh.
-
And i hope none of our Dear Readers is said office bimbo... no offense intended! (yeah, right...)
-
Okay, and with that I think I'll take a little nap. Nytall.
-
Penny good luck on both counts.
An instrumental I forgot to include is LARA'S THEME FROM DR. ZHIVAGO.
-
DR PENNYO it was of course the number one song in the NATION in 1960!
I decided to spend the evening watching network television.
NCIS - hmmmmmm, badly written, but okay. Nice set of characters.
THE AMAZING RACE - highly spoken of by some DR's, and I liked it a LOT
next up - L/O: SVU
-
Jennifer - I won't talk about the gig until after the contracts are agreed on. Maybe not even then. I don't like to talk about things in progress. But it's a good gig. And I'm hoping that part of it will be some meetings in New York! Hear that, DR Elmore?
-
New York at Christmas time is the BEST!
-
Black ice can be deadly!
So can ice nine. (A Vonnegut ref. So it goes.)
-
Keith found a food Echo gobbles up, hot dogs with cheese inside them. I really am an expert now on microwaving hot dogs. ;D She also liked the fish sticks he purchased. At least she is eating. We are out of canned dog food but I think in our attempts to get her eating again we have spoiled her.
-
Jennifer - I won't talk about the gig until after the contracts are agreed on. Maybe not even then. I don't like to talk about things in progress. But it's a good gig. And I'm hoping that part of it will be some meetings in New York! Hear that, DR Elmore?
I wish I had a guest room for you, DRPanni! Any date for the meetings?
-
Another instrumental blast from the past: "Theme from Mission: Impossible," Lalo Schifrin.
For that matter, how about that other 5/4 instrumental:
"Take Five," Dave Brubeck.
-
Right on topic - I had a "clerk encounter" today at Good Guys. I had purchased a little 13 inch TV for the guest room so that DD won't be watching in the LR - which is right next to my office and would disturb my work. I already have a 13 inch TV, but I couldn't get it to play DVDs. So I purchased the TV and told the salesman I would be back later to pick it up (I had walked over). When I got home, I gave my own 13 " TV one more try - and I figured out what I had neglected to do to get it to work. So I called up the store and asked the clerk to cancel my sale. He said he would. But later, I had to go to the post office, so I dropped by Good Guys to pick up my refund slip.
So I go in and ask for the clerk. He wasn't around so another young punk clerk came to help me. I explained and asked him to find the refund bill for me. So he says to me, "First I have to find out if we have how many we're supposed to have in stock actually in stock."
I said, "I told you I didn't take the TV. It's here."
He says, "I have to check that."
I say, "Are you suggesting that I'd take home a TV then come back here and say I didn't take it and ask you for a refund?"
He just looks at me and goes to the computer to check the stock.
So I say to him, "Hold on! I told you that I didn't take the TV. The other clerk knows that."
He says, "Well, he's not here."
I say, "In other words, you're saying you don't believe me."
...And it went on like that. He snarled at me. I told him that he was rude and had no idea how to treat customers.
The clerk I had dealt with finally showed up and handed me the refund bill.
A boring long story - it was much more interesting to those present.
-
BTW - I don't blame the clerk for checking, but he should have said, "Yes, ma'am. I'll look for your refund invoice right away" - and checked the stock without saying what he was doing.
-
OK...
Now it's time for my walk!
-I need more potato chips!
;)
Laters...
Dear DR Elmore: Please set a place for two for Jose at the Joe Allen table! ;D ;) :o
-
I wish I had a guest room for you, DRPanni! Any date for the meetings?
Not for sure yet. It's up to the studio to say yes or no to funding it. They always put you up at nice hotels - I've stayed at some marvy ones on various studios' dimes. If it happens, you can join me for smart drinks, DR ELmore. (Or even stupid drinks. But smart ones are so much more amusing.)
-
Hey, I think we should go for 300 posts today! Let's finish up November (or start December) in a big way.
-
Panni I'm sorry but I'm laughing.
I have a good story. I called Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor Michigan to order a gift for the incredible new vet we have. I was also checking out what Bryan has ordered in the past so we can send him a package. The woman who helped me mentioned this was her first week and she didn’t have all of my answers. Well she got them all for me. Three phone calls later (it was a complicated order) we had put together a nice package for the doctor. I still need to order Bryan’s gift. I was so impressed with her I asked to speak to the manager.
-
Dear DR Elmore: Please set a place for two for Jose at the Joe Allen table! ;D ;) :o
Jose I'm sorry but - ;D ;D ;D
-
Speaking of doggie troubles, my aunt called tonight. My dog cousin Coco hurt her paw very badly. And they went to find out tonight if she would have to have an operation.
Luckily she won't, but she does have to stay in a cage for 10 days, which I know she will hate. Anyhow I've already gotten her doggie Christmas present. A doggie scarf that says "noel", a little reindeer stuffed toy, and a big huge reindeer cuddly dog toy.
-
I must admit there was a time when I could have kept up with Jose when it came to eating. I didn't weigh all that much more than I do now. It use to drive Keith crazy I could eat like that and not get fat.
-
Poor Coco in a cage for ten days. I have never heard of such a thing. What did she do to her paw and are they going to give her mild sedatives so she doesn't get agitated?
-
I love my new location. I decided on the spur of the moment to get my nails done (broken to bits by the move). I went to my usual nail salon -- by going out my back door and walking across the alley! Cool.
-
Only 67 more posts and we hit 300. Go team!
-
DR JRand, yes wasn't TAR (amazing race) good tonight. I love this show!
-
Dinner report: Venison steaks, marinated in red wine with herbs and sauced with leeks and mushrooms in beef stock. With roasted carrots and potatoes.
I'm working my way up to those goose breasts. But I need something to make a break from the game, because these dinners are getting...well, gamey.
Our hunch is, that son-in-law-who-hunts is really using us as an excuse for hunting. But it proves he's good for something.
-
DR Jane, my aunt isn't sure what happened to Coco (the dog's) paw. I know it's bandaged up.
Apparently they have to carry her down in the elevator when she has to do her business. My aunt is looking for some type of wagon.
-
Panni-very cool. :)
SWW where was my gross food warning? :P ;D
Jennifer, but to be crated for ten days. Can’t they let her out when they can keep her next to them? I bt they will after awhile. Is the paw cut or sprained? A wagon would help. Is Coco big? I have been thankful Keith is here to carry Echo when necessary. He puts her on the bed at night now she can't jump up.
-
Not for sure yet. It's up to the studio to say yes or no to funding it. They always put you up at nice hotels - I've stayed at some marvy ones on various studio's dimes. If it happens, you can join me for smart drinks, DR ELmore. (Or even stupid drinks. But smart ones are so much more amusing.)
Yes, but stupid drinks can be so silly! Maybe we could start smart and deteriorate?
DRSWW, I already had Jose on my list as a possibility. What I will do on Sunday is take my number and add 5 to it before I call Joe Allen back to confirm.
Time to crash. Good night, all!
-
Dear DR Elmore: Please set a place for two for Jose at the Joe Allen table! ;D ;) :o
HEY!?!?! I resemble that remark!!!
Actually...
It's been kind of strange/neat... But in the two weeks I've been back from LA/Houston/NYC, I've actually lost seven pounds!
I know I've been walking each day - at least two miles each day - but I've also been making stops at the bakery, bread store and grocery store along the way. In any case...
One place should be fine for me at Joe Allen!
:D
-
Keith just put Echo on the bed-guess I will go keep her company.
-
Jose, it's the walking. Don't stop.
-
Years ago, our neighbor's dog hurt himself and she put him in a baby carriage to take him for walks. He liked it so much that she kept on walking him in it after he recovered. We still see her rolling her dog around the neighborhood.
-
Don't know if any DRs are familiar with this actor, David Baily, or not, but he evidently drowned on Thanksgiving. He appeared on several soap operas over the last 40 years, but I recal him from guest spots on TV shows like Dennis the Menace and Hazel.
He just began a role on the series PASSIONS this year which is a show I have not seen, but that I have heard mentioned on this here board.
-
DR JRand, yes wasn't TAR (amazing race) good tonight. I love this show!
It was a nail biter tonight. I wasn't happy with the outcome though.
-
New York at Christmas time is the BEST!
Thanksgiving weekend can be very nice, too. ;)
-
Yes, TAR was good tonight. In fact, I may be hooked now. Unfortunately, since I start rehearsals this Thursday, tonight was my last night to catch it. And there's goes the rest of my Prime Time TV viewing too..
...I'm so glad we had this time together...
-
Inching closer to 300....
-
If each person on the board now posted 3 times, we'd be halfway there. I'll start. This is one.
-
Followed, of course, by the ever-reliable Two..
-
Question to DRs. "Carnivale" starts here this week. Is this a TV show I should watch? My taste in TV is quality like "Six Feet Under". Guess that means I don't watch much TV.
-
...And the more artistic and interesting Three.
-
DR Jane: If you have trouble finding anything Echo will eat, ask your vet for a product called "AD." Expensive, but animals that won't eat will usually chow down on it. They also like meat baby food. Also expensive, but it usually works.
I nursed many tiny sick kittens through illnesses with AD and baby food.
-
Question to DRs. "Carnivale" starts here this week. Is this a TV show I should watch? My taste in TV is quality like "Six Feet Under". Guess that means I don't watch much TV.
I couldn't get into it - just not interested - but that's just me.
-
DR MattH
I am embarrassed to ask but the person in the lower right hand of the photo is it a man or a woman?
I am the only adult male in the cast. That's our Reverend Mother who's about 70 years old.
-
My new mailman knows my name. Amazing!
-

DR Jose, I've noticed that CBS has been rerunning each week's episode on Saturday night.
-
I forgot to mention, Matt, that was a cute pic. Your inner elf came out.
-
More instrumental favourites:
Unsquare Dance - Brubeck
Sukiyaki - Kenny Ball
Pipeline - Chanteys
More (Mondo Cane Theme) - Kai Winding.
-
DR Jose, I've noticed that CBS has been rerunning each week's episode on Saturday night.
Well... Since I have shows on Saturday night...
Ah, well...
And, for some reason, I really don't use my VCR as often as I used to.
???
-
Thanks DR Panni. You know more of my taste in TV than most.
-
CARNIVALE is among the strangest shows I've ever watched. It's a fascinating amalgamation of melodrama, spiritualism, and religious symbolism all tied up in the weirdest running plots you'll ever see. Bizarre is about the best word I know to describe it.
A friend and I spent hours of time trying to piece together all the symbolism and make sense of it until I was so twisted in knots that I was confounded. About 2/3 of the way through the season, I just stopped trying to figure it all out and just decided to enjoy it for its quirky uniqueness and the melodramatic turns of story. The symbolic layer was just too much for my feeble brain to comprehend.
-
Question to DRs. "Carnivale" starts here this week. Is this a TV show I should watch? My taste in TV is quality like "Six Feet Under". Guess that means I don't watch much TV.
I couldn't get into it either. It was almost too gritty for me. However, Steve was hooked on it, and I had some other friends who made it part of their Sunday night TV viewing.
I'd say give the opening episode a viewing and go from there.
-
I recorded HOUSE tonight which I know I'll enjoy watching tomorrow. I wish more people would discover this excellent medical mystery series.
-
And more:
Blue Star - Les Baxter
The High and The Mighty - Les Baxter
Asia Minor - Kokomo
Because They're Young - Duane Eddy
Mexico - Bob Moore

Post #1:
This weekend, as I was putting up the Festivus Pole at mom's, I listened to one of the Christmas with the Chipmunks recordings. I haven't listened to it in years, and I was kind of amazed by the very nifty song arrangements that Capitol afforded on what was pretty much a novelty act. I meant to check out who worked on it, but I didn't.
End of Post #1.
-
Thanks Matt and Jose. Will try the first episode. Not sure of the starting date. It's "off season" here of course!!
-
Post #2
I was channel hopping when I came across NBC's Christmas at Rockefeller Center, which I had planned on deliberately avoiding because I can't take most of the musical guest stars slated to appear. I happened upon it just as Tony Bennett was shivering his way through a rather nondescript holiday tune. I hopped around some more and came back in time to catch Jessica Simpson completely destroying some Christmas song. What a poser! Sheesh! I quickly came up with about 25 names of much more talented people I would rather see entertain at a tree lighting.

DR Tomovoz, I do not have HBO, so I can't offer any personal opinion on Carnivale. I have heard, though, that if you liked Twin Peaks, you would probably like this show.
End of Post #3

And one for Mahler!

I thought I had seen enough of Hair (three stage productions, plus the film) to last me a lifetime, but I see there's one other production I am very, very, very (that's three verys) sorry I missed!
Well, I've resisted long enough...
If you though John Barrowman was impressive in Hair, you should have seen him in Big!
-That was too, too easy... And remember the rule!
:P
-
DR Panni, are your newly done nails Jungle Red?
-
JEOPARDY SPOILER ALERT!
I think that either Mr. Jennings was exhausted or he just gave up. The question that finally stumped him, he could have figured out in his sleep on a good day (or night).
-
DR Panni, are your newly done nails Jungle Red?
No, DR DTM. They're Pumpkin (Something). I didn't catch the second word. A very nice shade of orangy red. I was the only customer in the joint which is usually busy.
-
I can smell 300. (Cinnamon and clove.)
-
JEOPARDY SPOILER ALERT!
I think that either Mr. Jennings was exhausted or he just gave up. The question that finally stumped him, he could have figured out in his sleep on a good day (or night).
Actually, tonight just seemed like a bad luck of the draw for categories tonight. For everyone. There were more than a few times when the questions kept being read, and no one was answering.
-
No, DR DTM. They're Pumpkin (Something). I didn't catch the second word. A very nice shade of orangy red. I was the only customer in the joint which is usually busy.
I am not hip on the subject of nail polish so I have a question: do they make scented nail polish?
-
I can smell 300. (Cinnamon and clove.)
And I just had a glass of Apple Cinnamon Spice Tea! Definitely cloves in that too!
-
No, DR DTM. They're Pumpkin (Something). I didn't catch the second word. A very nice shade of orangy red. I was the only customer in the joint which is usually busy.
Is there a "paprika" color?
-
I am not hip on the subject of nail polish so I have a question: do they make scented nail polish?
If they don't, you should invent it. A great idea.
-
Is there a "paprika" color?
I'm pretty sure I've actually seen it.
-
I got caught up doing google searches, which are always interesting, and I come back and holy moley on rye if we haven't been having an authentic posting frenzy. What a lovely way to spend an evening and send out November and welcome December. Lovely, do you hear me?
-
Only 18 more posts! I can smell 301! (garlic)

Maybe it was elmunk3003???
-
If they don't, you should invent it. A great idea.
I think so, too. Your nails could be smelling like pumpkin tonight. There could be some holiday scents like balsem fir and hollyberry. Maybe a "Kitchen" line with paprika and garlic (those would be great for restaurant waitresses.) And the aroma therapy scents could be a whole new product in of themselves. (Though I'm not sure how the image of women leaning back in their chairs sniffing their fingernails is gonna play.)
-
Well, since we are so close to making 300, and since I have recently fallen out of the Top Ten of Posters, I will do my best to help out this evening.
-
How about another SCROOGE photo???
-
DtM - I have a Chipmunk Album - the Chipmonks Sing the Beatles Songbook which I like to listen to - but it's on Liberty. Did the Chipmonks record for Capitol?
DRPANNI - Paprika was somebody baby's name on MAURY yesterday - but the poor little thing didn't have no dad.
TOMovOZ - I watched CARNIVALE a couple of times and didn't finish it or go back to it. So if you like it from the start - hang with it, I guess. It tries very hard to be mysterious and profound - but....well did you ever see LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD?
-
Great pic, TCB!
-
Well, since we are so close to making 300, and since I have recently fallen out of the Top Ten of Posters, I will do my best to help out this evening.
There's no way I'll ever be able to break the top ten, but I've just noticed that I've nudged my way into the top twenty.
-
How about another SCROOGE photo???
I'll bet that was taken during the "I Like Life" number.
-
I just got home from rehearsal for my next production. It is a new play called NATIONAL PASTIME about Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball. It is a beautifully written play. I play Branch Rickey, the executive for the Brooklyn Dodgers responsible for bringing Jackie into the Majors.
-
DRPANNI - Paprika was somebody baby's name on MAURY yesterday - but the poor little thing didn't have no dad.
A racially mixed baby? Daddy was black pepper? (no groaning).
-
DtM - I have a Chipmunk Album - the Chipmonks Sing the Beatles Songbook which I like to listen to - but it's on Liberty. Did the Chipmonks record for Capitol?
Nope. You're right--it was the Liberty label. I had Capitol on my mind.

I'll bet that was taken during the "I Like Life" number.
Actually it was taken off-stage during a performance at the local mall. I was backstage warming up, and I had no idea he was taking my photo for the newspaper.
-
I think I shall take a shower. A nice long hot shower. The Long Hot Shower - wasn't that a film starring Paul Newman?
-
I just finished up the box of Swiss champagne truffles -- which was stupid because my stomach ached all day today from yesterday's truffles. But they were SO good it's almost worth another tummy ache!
-
bk is going to be all wet when we hit 300. Skammen!
-
And a big yellow convertible, MRBK - the thing I remember most from that movie!
LOL DRPANNI.
DRTCB - you are creating some stage magic for that young girl watching you.....I love the expression on her face....Magic....MAGIC!!!

Hello, Iris!
-
Yes, time for bed.
Sounds like a good play, DRTCB....was that the same play that was done last season at the Indiana Repertory Theatre in Indy?
-
Well, I made it home in time to miss the 300 celebration, but I'm adding to it to make it 300+!!
-
I just figured out that today's post #74 by Dan (the Man) was HHW's 77,777th post! ;D
-
Thanks for more feedback on Carnivale DRs.
Missed the celebrations for 300.. Just awoke from an afternoon nap! Sad but true - I need them these past few weeks.
-
"Joan of Arcadia" has its first showing on TV here tonight.. Should I bother? Know it has been mentioned at some stage at HHW but can't remember the verdict. I know - I should do a search.
-
I never watched it. I don't know anyone who does. It's not that everyone I know doesn't watch it, I just don't know if any of my friends watch it. I've heard generally good things about it, but I really haven't been paying attention. Hope this helps!

Every time I pull an all-nighter, I swear that it will be my last. (It never is, though). Here it isn't even midnight yet and I'm already bored. Shakespeare is almost as bad as Keats.
But I found the perfect monologue to perform in class on Thursday. It's from Act 2, scene 3 of The Two Gentlemen of Verona. It uses props and I get to take off my shoes.

-I just wonder how long it's been December in OZ?
;)
Goodnight.

Since it's not yet "Ask BK (And Anyone Else) Question Day" yet, I'll wait until (later) tomorrow when it's official, which is a good thing because I have to think about how to phrase my question (it'll probably be a little long). But I would like to put the Official HainesHisWay Ethics and Morals Committee on warning. I think I'm gonna need 'em...Oooo (that's oooO spelled backwards), cryptic, ain't it? ::)
But I won't be a late-nighter tonight. I only got about 3-1/2 hours of sleep last night/this morning. I just could not get to sleep. So, tonight I want to get to be early (well, early for me) and try to actually sleep. And think of how to phrase my question. So, good night all!

Had a lovely shower. I'm amazed, mind-boggled, at the plethora of postings.
-
And the night is young, which is more than I can say.

I have made myself some popcorn. That was some trick. I said abra cadabra and suddenly I was popcorn. Go know.

It's a good show. Witty, well-written, often quite touching. I'd give it a try, Tom.
-
I was out in my automobile just now and saw a coyote.
-
The coyote is probably saying to his buds, "I was out on the street just now and saw this chick in a white car..."
-
I'm all alone here... Just Panni and the wild animals...
-
I think I'll sign of at 330 - a nice round number.
-
Lost a post it seems. Thanks DR Panni. Will watch Joan this evening.

Wow, what an impressive number of posts! I just got back from picking up my dear friend Tiana from the airport. She broke the news that she'll likely be moving back to Hawaii (where her family is) in January. Sad...I shall miss her.
Today I was changing my two year old, scolding him for not using the toliet yet again...he looked at me gravely and announced "Ann, you need be happy" and gave me a hug. I just had to laugh.
