I suppose I should go to bed shortly.  I found some wonderful CDs to listen to.  I haven't listened to this stuff in a decade or even two decades - I found an incredible CD called Sax Drive with a sax player named John Harle - concertos by Stanley Myers and Richard Rodney Bennett - sublime.  And I finally found the Menotti piano concerto, which is fantastic.  I'm also appalled at how bad sounding some of this stuff is - either mastered so low it's a complete joke, or compressed so much there's no life, or just muffled beyond belief.  I immediately think oops the new speakers have gone bad - but then I listen to something beautifully recorded and mastered and that ends that.

A possible question for today - Would anyone want to talk about the one or two things, however small or large, that we are most thankful for right at this very moment -

Or is that too boring a topic?

I slept rather well.  I had a long dream in which DR Ginny appeared, something about a production of Babes In Toyland.  Then I had a long dream with my friend Stephen Sondheim, who displaying his paintings(!) in a huge movie theatre.  One of the ladies who worked there asked me to introduce her, and I did.  Steve gave me a tour of his paintings and the one for Jonathan Tunick was really nice, and we had had gin and tonic.

Mine is REALLY boring --

Right now I'm just thankful for everything.  For everything that's good, and for everything that could be bad but isn't.

(A bad sentence, and SO boring.)

Peace, health, wealth, and happiness on all of us.

TCB, that reviewer had better frickin' acknowledge he saw a rehearsal, not a regular performance.

Damn him.  Damn him all to hell.

But now, having had a bad dress rehearsal, you will have a hum-dinger of an opening night.  BREAK LEG VIBES.

BK:

ONE-EYED JACKS is/was considered public domain for a time, and there were a lot of bootleg versions being sold.

Do you know the reason for it being p.d.?

Lack of copyright notice?

Was it "rescued" from p.d.?

My familiarity with the music of Sibelius is nothing to write home about.  I have these recordings which could use some airing out:

Pelleas and Melisande suite, Charles Mackerras conducting.
Kirsten Flagstad, songs, London Symphony Orchestra.
The Tempest incidental music, Sir Charles Groves, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

Ormandy - Four Legends from the "Kalevala".  Also have it conducted by Lukas Foss.

Heifetz and Shlomo Mintz playing the violin concerto.

Ormandy - the first symphony.
Koussevitzky, Monteux, and Paray doing the second symphony.
Alexander Gibson doing the fifth, London Symphony Orch.

Well, it's a start.

I am not a fan of whoopie pies, however, pumpkin ones sound intriguing.

I baked my pumpkin roll and am about to make peanut butter haystacks.  I still have cookies to make.  I fear it isn't enough for 20 people.  I should have purchased more cream cheese to make another pumpkin roll.  I am not going back to the store.

Just finished making the pumpkin scones that are suppose to be Starbuck's "Knock offs" - my dough was too sticky and they came out looking like pieces of chicken (or turkey) - I glazed them, but that didn't make a difference.   I'm sure they'll taste just fine, though.

Well, I'd managed to avoid any unpleasantness this week - until today.  Nothing horrible but an e-mail I didn't need - I knew it was coming, but I was hoping to not see it or deal with it until Monday - give than we know are going into a holiday weekend, it's kind of nauseating that it arrived at five o'clock today.  I don't have to even respond until Monday and respond I will.  It's nothing crazy or anything, just a minor annoyance.

And now, I'm leaving work and going to rehearsal.  We're doing an "Italiano" (whatever the heck that means...I think it means just speeding through the lines, but I'm only guessing), then working scenes that need it the most.  My scene hasn't had much work, so we'll really go through it tonight.   Then, we're done with rehearsals until Sunday night.

Be back later.

I will have to go out around ten to Gelson's so I have something to eat on the 'morrow.  Have decided it would be too depressing to go sit in a restaurant all by my lonesome.

Unless I was traveling I would rather be home if spending the holiday alone.

I go to restaurants by myself all the time.  I bring my Kindle and read. :)

The "Italiano" means a quick run-through of just speeding through the lines without walking through any blocking.

Oh I go to restaurants all the time by myself but not on Thanksgiving.  I think I'll make some Wacky Noodles with sautéed chicken.

Watched about thirty minutes of Captain America: Civil War or whatever it's called.  These movies are terrible and more importantly no fun at all.  Surprised to see Scarlett Johansson frankly.

Listening to the harp concerto of William Matthias - really nice.  Then I'm doing four soundtracks as a change of pace - The Time Machine, Time After Time, Wait Until Dark, and Ride the High Country.  Then I'll return to classical and whatever I uploaded last night.  Then I'll go through the bottom shelf of the hall closet and see what I want to do next - every time I return I pull out more stuff to get rid of.  I will say in researching the FSM soundtracks as I was uploading these four - some of them on Amazon go for really huge money.

I remember last year for Thanksgiving, I was in NYC  I had dinner by myself that eve, but then I was going to the evening performance of The Phantom of the Opera - first time seeing it in NYC.  I guess I was too excited to be lonely eating Thanksgiving Dinner alone - which I think was a chicken sandwich.

Wow guys, we've been without barriers all day!!! 2 minor accidents, which Leo was scolded for, and he knew it. I left for a while and when I came home, I was greeted by wagging tails and both dogs jumping on me. No one trying to get to Papa first!!! Leo has finally figured out that it's time to rest and has found the couch. It's not without saying that when I came home from errands, Leo had destroyed a CD, ripped up some music, and had strewn other things around. Which reminds me - I have to order a new LA CD  :-)

I'm now watching last night's episode of "Late Night with Seth Meyers."  One guest is Ben Platt, who is starring in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, and they're going to perform a number from the show.

Funny, the other night I listened to a recording of the Korngold violin concerto - I nuked it - just wasn't for me.  Doing the last of the closet and pulling out about twenty more CDs I found the Heifetz version of it and the Rozsa violin concerto - and I'm listening to the same Korngold as the other night but in THIS performance it's a whole other piece of music - I mean entirely wonderful and perfect.  That's the thing about orchestras, recordings, conductors, and soloists.  You can not respond to one at all, while another will suddenly make the music sing and be wonderful.  And the Rozsa concerto (which was the basis for his score to The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes) is one for the ages and let me tell you if you don't have this CD you really need to get it pronto.  The version I have came out in 1988 - wonder if it's had a new mastering since?  Although this sounds amazing - the Korngold in perfect mono and the rest in perfect stereo.  And Heifetz - what a poet.

I enjoyed the number from Dear Evan Hansen.  It's not everyone's cuppa, and I certainly didn't think that it's the greatest song ever written, but it was enjoyable.
