This music is making me very happy.   Finished all the stereo Bachianas and am now finishing the guitar concerto, which is great.  Then I'll either do the harmonica concerto (found three more CDs easily) or try out some of the mono Villa-Lobos conducted selections.  I know there are four or five more things in the closet, but they won't be hard to get to.

Sometime before 1962, she toured through Detroit as Maria in The Sound of Music.  It was my second professional musical and the last show I saw at the late, great Riviera Theatre.

Completely addicted to Villa-Lobos.  The mono recordings he conducted are terrible-sounding - bad mono, and his music cries out for stereo, anyway.  But I literally couldn't listen - all orchestral detail is so distant and bad-sounding.  And I'm not that fond of the Batiz sound either, so I have a complete set of the Bachianas and Choros pieces on their way - an odd label for them to be on, the Scandinavian label BIS, but it's a Brazilian orchestra and the samples on Amazon sound amazing.

Uploading two Gershwin CDs of newer vintage - these are the Rhapsody, American in Paris, and the Concerto in F in their original smaller orchestrations - I heard samples and they're really interesting and quite good.

If you have a multi-region DVD player I cannot recommend the three volumes of The Killing enough - if you've only seen the terrible American version, the original Swedish series is amazing and its leading lady is brilliant.

When a voice message is left for us we receive a written message by email.  That is normally we do.  My friend left a message on Tuesday and until Craig called yesterday we were clueless.  We really should check the phone every day, especially if we don't use it.  Nothing flashes at us to make it easy and the phone is not in an easy place to see it.

I would have enjoyed Allied more if I hadn't seen trailers on TV that gave away some major plot points.

Thank you. I want to avoid trailers then. I want to see that movie.

DR Joh, have you ever been to the Austin Trail of Lights?  It looks amazing.

No. I haven't. It does look nice. DR Druxy, have you toured it?

I am really craving pie, pumpkin, apple, or pecan.  Really badly.  I guess when my pension lands on Thursday there will be a trek to the Little Pie Co.

I have some lemon meringue pie in the fridge if you want to drop by.

Listening to this really fun and interesting Gershwin stuff - hearing the Concerto in F in the smaller orchestration is great - beautifully played, too.  Really enjoying it.

And I tried out my first four SACD discs.  A bit of a scare when using the newer Oppo - the receiver would not lock to the SACD encoder and I couldn't get any sound.  So, I put it in the older Oppo and that worked fine.  And holy moley on rye they sound absolutely amazing.  The first was the Howard Hanson symphony one and two disc, one of those Mercury Living Presence CDs - well, it blew me away - absolutely stunning sounding.  Same with the three Living Stereo releases from RCA - stunning clarity spread across three channels.  Now, interestingly, these SACD things have two layers - one for the SACD encode and the other for standard playback on a CD player.  In the case of the three Living Stereo SACD discs, the CD layer sounded much better than the previous CDs.  Whereas on the Hanson, the CD layer sounded exactly like the older CD and NOTHING like the SACD, which was disappointing.  The SACD has spacious sound, not too dry as some of these Mercury things are - whereas the CD is dry as a bone.

I made a very small helping of Wacky Noodles with chicken so I could use up the chicken that was left - it was even better than yesterday but I'm feeling very full and may go for a jog in about thirty minutes.

And I'm going to do some cleaning.

I need to, too.  The OnDemand option isn't working on one of my DVRs (only one), and the Comcast rep (who was very nice, helpful, and in the central time zone) couldn't find out from his end what could be wrong, so someone will be coming out tomorrow sometime between noon and 2 pm.  My house is QUITE messy, so I can't make it truly presentable, but I can at least remove the most embarrasing messes from view. ::)

;)

I had some complete idiot order three CDs today.  Only he accidentally ordered two of one of them for a total of four CDs.  He sends an e-mail saying WE charged him for two copies of the one CD as if it were OUR fault.  We don't charge anything - we have nothing to do and if some idiot puts two copies of a CD in the cart then guess what - they charge for two copies - by "they" I mean Paypal.  Then before I even read that e-mail he sends another saying I need to cancel the entire order and refund him his money because - wait for it - he looked in his collection and found he had the CDs he ordered.  I refunded him and suggested he shop elsewhere from now on - so that's a hundred bucks I had for about two hours that I no longer have.  People.  Can't live with 'em, can't live with 'em.

And I believe what I read.

Wow, Fidel Castro finally died.  He was 90.

Interesting...his IMDb listing (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004242/reference) and the CNN article (http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/26/americas/fidel-castro-obit/index.html) say that he was born in 1926, but one of the local news reports said that he was born in 1929, which would've made him 87 years old.  I would assume that the local news report had a typo.

Post by: George on November 25, 2016, 11:20:08 PM
It was a typo.  The announcer said on the local report that Castro was 90 years old, and on their website, they have 1926-2016 in their display graphics.  Someone hasn't been paying attention.
