Title: DISCOVERING THE JOYS OF SACD
Post by: bk on November 26, 2016, 12:04:55 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes discovered the joys of SACD, and now it is time for you to post until the SACD cows come home - in their case, SACD stands for Seriously Awful Cow Droppings.

I had four episodes each of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Designated Survivor, This Is Us, Grey's Anatomy, and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency to watch.  I'm now watching Grey's Anatomy.  I've already watched one episode each of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Designated Survivor, and This Is Us.

I want to discover the joys of SACD.

One thing I'm curious about is how you tell the player which layer you want to play.

He had been posting about samuel Barber, and I decided I wanted to hear the violin concerto.  Well, it's on one of my hard drives, but i cannot locate it!  If I could remember the violinisit or conductor, it would make my search easier.  Damn!  I will do some more looking today.

We watched ACT ONE last night.

It's not a great movie, though Jason Robards is terrific as George S. Kaufman.

I recall seeing it in a theater shortly after I moved to Los Angels and, as a young wannabe writer, I did find it to be very inspirational.

DR JohnG, did you recognize "She Loves Me" in the Garland film?

I knew that before going in. I just didn't remember so many long stretches of nothing as well as that ridiculous subplot about the violin and a possible other love interest for Van Johnson.

Kathleen Wilhoite was a great singer in Cop Rock. She had possibly the most affecting solo in the entire short history of the show.

She plays a drug addicted mother singing about having to sell her child in order to get the drugs she craves.

I'll look later, got to run out now.  Don't know why I never checked this out myself, but I'd guess I "should" be set up to play them.

Well, I had a total washout this morning.  I waited forever for a bus to get me to 86th and Columbus.  The TD Bank had a coin counting contraption and I had a jar of coins to convert to bills.  Well, they no longer have the service. Dammit.

Then, I went to the Post Office.  The jerk delivery truck driver left me a second notice if a delivery attempt.  Okay, wher's the first delivery attempt notice?  So, I had no idea what it was and I figured there was not enough info on the delviery attempt slip to ask the PO to redeliver so i went to hte Post Office.

It's outrageous for a bank to remove that kind of service.

The one at my bank is great -- it not only works 99% of the time, it's free if you have any kind of account there.
(Otherwise, 8% or something.)

I was handed a package from Amazon.co.uk that Amazon told me would be delivered next week!  Simce I had a final delivery notice, I don't know when the hell it arrived, but it was the new Yeomen of the Guard full score from Oxford University Press that I paid $100 for with my last G&D check.

The carton was flimsy, water-damaged and torn open, and the new score looks like a bad second-hand copy with water-damaged pages and bent pages.  I am absolutely furious for several reasons: if the asshole Post Service driver had simply left it my lobby as usual on the first delivery attempt, I mighht have salvaged it a lot better, and I have received much more securely bundled packages from Amazon.co.uk in the past.

I've sent them a thank you and fuck you email, and now I wait for their response.

Thinking about the passing of Fidel Castro.

Back in 1959, right after the Cuban Revolution, when I was a senior in high school, I wrote a term paper in my Social Studies class in which I argued that Castro would NOT become a dictator.

As I recall, I got an "A" for that paper.

A couple of years later, I have no doubt that I would have received an "F".

And speaking of DVRs, I'm at home now, waiting for a Comcast technician to arrive (the arrivsl window is noon to 2 pm), because one of my DVRs can no longer access OnDemand.  I get an error message and when I called customer service, they couldn't see what was wrong.  If I have to get a new DVR, it'll have to wait because I have quite a few programs recorded on it, and I would need to watch those first.

Went to a used CD store in Tarzana - I used to go regularly but I honestly don't think I've been there in three years.  They were having a sale - I got four CDs for sixteen dollars INCLUDING tax.  An all Planets selection - yes, just when I thought I was out they pull me back in.  I got Tomita's Planets, a newer recording conducted by John Eliot Gardiner that I've been interested in hearing, Zubin Mehta's well-liked version with the LA Philharmonic, and a conductor called Mark Elder with the Halle Orchestra.

Okay, I've found two (2) RCA CDs on the shelf that are SACD.  There might be another one or two here.

The logos on the back say DSD (SACD Surround), SACD Stereo, and CD Audio.

These are the Reiner Scheherazade and the Heifetz Beethoven/Mendelssohn concertos.

I played the Reiner yesterday and it sounds amazing.

It's funny, the receiver's little display panel reports five channels in use, and the Oppo reports (via the TV monitor) "SACD PCM, Channel type 5.0".  But everything is absolutely dead except for left-center-right.  As it should be.  I manually switched back and forth between stereo and this, and what a revelation.  Can't wait to have my chance at turning these up to a proper volume.  Too much going on here for that right now.

One very interesting anomaly:

On the Beethoven/Mendelssohn disc, the Beethoven plays in L/R stereo.  I can't kick that center channel on.  The Mendelssohn, same disc, plays in three-channel.

But these selections, man...I haven't listened to this stuff in a while, and these performances AND recordings are sublime.  No other word applies.

BK:  If I understand the notes right, you say you listened to the CD layer for comparison.  How did you do that?  I think the player detects what's available and defaults to the highest level.  I don't know how to tell it to do otherwise.

To listen to the CD layer put it in a CD only player or your computer.

Here's the first batch o' Blu-rays - the first half of the closet.  Good stuff, and trying to price fairly.  But first:

CDs

Matilda - original London cast album $7
Laura Benanti Live at 54 Below $7

Blu-rays (region B noted where applicable)

A Man Called Horse $8
The Lion King still sealed $8
Ingrid Bergman In Her Own Words (Criterion) $15
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Dr. Seuss - can't find any copies of one with the fun sparkly slipcase, which this has) $8
Godzilla vs. Biollante (it's really good) $8
Field of Dreams $6
11.22.63 (miniseries - cheapest price on Amazon is twenty-five bucks) $14
Little Big Man (classic - Dustin Hoffman) $8
Damnation Alley (fun sci-fi) $10
The Deep (Nick Nolte/Robert Shaw) $5
Circus of Fear/Five Golden Dragon (super fun B movies! cheapest price on Amazon is $17) $10
An Education (terrific recent film with Carey Mulligan) $8
Autumn Sonata (Criterion - Ingmar and Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullman) $15

and last but not least a very cool steelbook from the UK for Double Indemnity.  Cheapest price on Amazon UK is about thirty-two bucks.  You can have it for $20

And - go.  PM me as I may not see it if you respond here.

Jane, the lemon meringue pie was store-bought, and it just ain't like Mom's. But it's pretty good.

Makes me hungry for a grapefruit meringue pie, but it has been cold enough yet down here for the grapefruit to sweeten up. That's the only meringue pie I make.

When we lived in Michigan there was a restaurant and bakery, the Machus Red Fox Restaurant where Jimmy Hoffa was last seen, that baked little lemon meringue tarts.  While not the best they were good and I could easily stop in when I was in the mood for one or two.

I would not even want to try a grapefruit pie.  The thought of it makes me shiver.

That's terrible!  Hopefully, Amazon UK will do the right thing.

Ditto and Ditto!

"Take Me Up to the Mitten"

Take me up to the mitten,
Take me back to the farm;
Buy me some paczkis and fresh brown eggs,
Run a 5K and get really sore legs.
Let me root, root, root for the Spartans,

Listening to a wonderful oddity that arrived in the mail today. It's called Freedomland U.S.A. and it's a musical score that Jule Styne and George Weiss wrote for a failed theme park that opened in the Bronx in 1960 and disappeared soon thereafter.

The songs are an odd mix, but there's an overture that, well, is a classic Jule Styne overture. It's brassy, it's classy, it's filled with life and fizz. Frank DeVol conducts with his usual verve.

The singers include Johnny Horton, Richard Hayes and Jill Corey as well as Charlie Weaver, who is grandfather of the Arquettes.

The dance was fun tonight. Got to catch up with a few people I haven't seen in too long.

Sorry to read about Ron Glass. I was a big Barney Miller fan back in the day.

Listening to Puccini Without Words - originally released on Kapp - it would be swell to actually hear what the tapes sound like - this was a very early CD when they had no idea what they were doing.

Last night Vixdad and I went to the Texas Roadhouse for dinner  but today I cooked the turkey breast and we had our very own thanksgiving feast with leftovers enough for lively turkey sandwiches tomorrow

I always feel that turkey sandwiches are best with some life left in them. Did they do a little jig on the plate?

 :D :P

Listening to some Ravel now - lesser known but wonderful pieces orchestrated by the Twilight Zone's Marius Constant and conducted by Laurent Petitgirard, who composed the scores for Maigret.

Found an online store I've bought from before via both eBay and Amazon - but going to their site, they have all these RCA Living Stereo SACD things really cheap - seven bucks a pop, one was even six.  Got four of 'em.

The show was good this evening.  It suffered from "second night slump," but nothing tragically wrong.
