Well, you've read the notes, the notes had cognitive dissonance, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently convinced they absolutely ate at White COWstle.
-
And the word of the day is: QUINQUENNIUM!
-
I KNOW I've never been to either White or West Castle.
-
First post after DR George (after BK).
-
I ate at White Castle when I lived in Jersey.
-
We had a White Castle knock-off in Tacoma back in the Seventies. It didn't last very long.
-
Good morning to all
-
There is a Krystal restaurant (Similar to White Castle I am told)
about 20 miles from where I live. Driven by there many times in the past 20 years or so and have never stopped there.
-
I have tried once a frozen White Castle burger. Not bad, but sure a fresh one is better.
-
Good morning.
-
I ate at a White Castle once. My husband from Chicago talked an talked about White Castle. So when we were back east, we stopped at one.
All I remember is that on the way to the table, a soda tipped over and soaked a couple of the burgers. Those were the ones I ate. They were awful.
-
Dear BK,
Are you going to do any more Outside the Box musicals? Because I think you should do "The Birds." Wouldn't that make a great musical?
-
Today I am going hiking. I'll see how the foot does. It is still sore.
-
Good morning, all!
-
Around 9:00 I will begin my West Side prergrinations. First stop, West Side Radiology at Columbus Circle for this X-ray. Then, Music Theatre International.
Once I'm back here, I have work on my desk. I'm still waffling about a decision I made in this new score.
-
I heard from my brother Randy. The move is accomplished and he and Jo are in their new home. He tells me my bedroom is ready. I told him I'd be there when the swimming pool was ready.
-
DR George, that's a great photo of you in costume.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I needed to sleep for another hour. Maybe I'll nap this afternoon.
-
Today's an at-home day, but it includes having the chimney cleaners coming around 2:30 in the afternoon. I have to be ready for them by having the area in front of the fireplace and the area in the basement cleared so they can have their fun. I'll be sure to let you all know if any of them talk in Cockney accents and dance on the rooftop.
-
I'm afraid to think what kind of cognitive dissonance you get when some of these people sit down at the piano.
-
What a great in-costume photo of George in last night's posts!
-
Good morning, all.
-
I love me some White Castle. I try to get there every time I get back to Louisville.
Michael, the frozen version lacks the pickle, which makes a world of difference in the flavor. And sadly, Krystal is a poor substitute.
-
Great photo, George.
-
Dear BK,
Are you going to do any more Outside the Box musicals? Because I think you should do "The Birds." Wouldn't that make a great musical?
DR Laura, do you get overrun with grackles in the fall? It feels like a scene out of The Birds here, too.

BK: O. M. G.
White Castle and West Castle. As a child of the Midwest AND Los Angeles, I totally know the score on this.
West Castle appeared out of nowhere one day. I want to say it was in the late seventies when I was living in Beverly Hills, because had I still been in Hollywood, I would have been at that one every day gorging myself. I remember it being on a southeast corner, and the ad says Las Palmas so I shan't argue with it. When I heard about it (it was on the radio -- some DJ or news person was getting a bag of them delivered) I was thrilled, and the first one I actually got to was the Van Nuys one which on that weekend afternoon (it might have been their opening week) was overrun with an enthusiastic crowd of White Castle fans. They had to have done great business for a while.
I never knew the Woodland Hills one, but I can tell you that the "coming" Long Beach one was on PCH just east/southeast of the big traffic circle. I was driving my parents around on one of their visits and we turned right in and had a meal there.
At some point I found them all gone, and I vaguely remember hearing it was because of White Castle. It's kind of too bad, because White Castle had NEVER expanded much past the Midwest (I think St. Louis and Minneapolis were about as far west as they went). Maybe if West Castle hadn't so blatantly copied everything...
I see on White Castle's website that they have something in Las Vegas now, but Vegas is always a unique situation for any company, and they still haven't expanded much beyond their original Midwest territory. Fortunately, I can get to a couple of them in the Bronx and in New Jersey. (There were rumors for a while about them being "just about to" come to Connecticut, but ... no such thing.)
-
The frozen ones are in all the stores now, and if you're careful with them you can reasonably recreate them at home and satisfy that craving.
As John G. says, there's no pickle so you must get some small thin dill slices and add it. Do the microwaving first, then add the pickle and a very tiny dash of ketchup and mustard.
(The White Castle stores themselves are inconsistent on the ketchup and mustard thing. Some add nothing, some add ketchup, but I found the tastiest ones at the places where they add a tiny bit of both.)
-
I've been to a Krystal in north Florida, and hell, I'd probably go there occasionally if I lived there -- but again as John G. says, they are not a GOOD White Castle imitator.
But here's another imitator that few people know about these days, that did wonderful business in the Southeast during the 1960s, and I remember being surprised to find one in Cleveland in the early 1970s: Royal Castle. It was sublime. They had, like, ten items on the menu, and the main things were the hamburgers/cheeseburgers, a wonderful bowl of chili, the cold drink was Birch Beer in frosted mugs (no Coke or Pepsi), and they had a cinnamon roll that turned me on to cinnamon rolls for life. Long gone, even from most people's memories which is sad. They are at the top of the list of fast food chains I miss the most.
-
Two!
-
The last time I went to White Castle they were testing miniature corn dogs and deep-fried Mac and cheese. Both were scary bad.
-
Thanks to all for the continued vibes for Trent....he is doing well....the human body is an amazing thing to be sure....as is modern medicine.
DR GEORGE that is a great photo.....I like that they used the "Lucy lens" on you to make you look younger and softer....very becoming.
-
There is a rumor that another colorized I Love Lucy double feature is scheduled for Friday night.....I don't like "colorized", but one of them is a favorite.....

I should note here that even this White Castle fan for life has never wasted a meal trying anything on their menu other than the basic burgers. I never imagined any of it being any good. It certainly isn't attractive to the likes of me. When I'm on the road and there's a White Castle convenient for pulling into for a breakfast snack, I still get the cheeseburgers.
(Which is saying nothing. I'm the guy who ate the very hot and spicy Original Tommy burgers for breakfast in L.A. Talk about the way to start a day...)
-
Just look at what BK hath wrought here.
-
We of course were brought up to appreciate the White Castle hamburger....there wasn't a location near us, but we always stopped when we went to Indy.
We now have our own location in Mooresville, and when several of us are getting together we get a Crave Case of Cheeseburgers.....something like 26.....and in case HHW'ers didn't know, they offer a Senior Discount!
-
DR George that is a fantastic photo. I think you should make it your avatar until the show is over.
-
Today I am going hiking. I'll see how the foot does. It is still sore.
Good luck!

My question for ASK BK DAY - is more of a reminder.....this is a good time to talk to your accountant about starting your Social Security. It's YOUR money, and you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare so you will have insurance. Your benefit - as it's called now - will pay your Part B cost....and you can get a Part D/Prescription package.
And at your age....uh.....OUR age.....you can collect your money and make as much income as you wish. DON'T LET THEM KEEP ANY MORE OF YOUR MONEY!!!!
You can apply online...I did...
-
DR Jrand I agree with your reminder to Bruce.
-
The notes on the White vs West Castle are funny while sad at the same time. I have never eaten at either place, at least not that I recall.
-
Vibes you don't get sick kids Bruce. Every day I feel like I am coming down with a cold. I am beginning to think it is allergies.

Yikes, did I miss this - BK has not enrolled in Medicare yet? Didn't we discuss this in the posts ages ago?
-
Must read even more carefully. I seem to be missing too much vital info.

I was going good to correct my post and decided to comment on it instead. I know I did not type kids after sick. ;D

So, I hate it when people tell me it's raining as they piss on my shoes. the X-Ray went fine, but when I got to MTI, there was no check and conflicting reasons on why: they had to redo them since they were stuck together, they were waiting for a signature. Suffice to say, I am now home and quite pissed off. I'm told it will be messengered to me at some point today. Goddam it.

Good Morning
-
It's Wednesday - ask BK day and my single day off in the week
-
I'm about to go out on a short but sweet bike ride. The boys are wrestling on the floor, I don't dare interrupt their bonding. They'll wrestle, get tired and then crash for a few hours
-
Oh....perhaps he did....and I am remiss...... I know he is collecting his SAG pension....
-
Oh....perhaps he did....and I am remiss...... I know he is collecting his SAG pension....
I remember people on here had suggested he get on Medicare right away because he could. I don't recall reading that he actually did it.
-
I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep - I took some NyQuil so I'm really groggy right now. Back in a bit when I'm coherent.
-
I ate at White Castle -- in Indianapolis IN. It was a major treat. And White Castle burgers -- in the 1980s -- cost 19 cents each. I would buy them by the dozen, along with onion chips, a large fries and a large chocolate milkshake.
I'd spend about $6 on the lot.
I still eat White Castles. They sell them at Safeway and other fine grocery stores in California.
You can get a box of 6 for about $4.99 (not a great price). You can find boxes of 16 for $9.99. MUCH better price.
-
Back from some banking. Will eat in about forty-five minutes. Still trying to not be groggy.
-
I haven't gotten this damned White Castle / West Castle thing out of my mind all morning. :)
The only thing my memory is unclear on is exactly WHEN they opened those stores in L.A. I first said late '70s, but I'm googling and finding other people's vague memories thinking it was the early '80s. No one knows for sure. I did find there was an additional location, though: Las Vegas! One person thinks the current White Castle there is on or very near the same spot as that short lived West Castle.
-
Wednesday afternoon greetings! I was up and out early for a long Starbucks visit with my friend Becky. Hadn't seen her for a couple of weeks and we had a lot of catching up to do.
-
Remember I said I was going yesterday for my annual eye exam? Well, the upshot is that I'm scheduled for 2 cataract surgeries - right eye on December 29, left January 5.
I am not amused...
-
Back from my bike ride. Dogs are on the patio, kinda tired today, not much playing. Got my 2nd copy of L.A. Now and Then - it's uploading and then the CD will go into hiding, away from curious paws.
-
Ta-DA!

I'm so sorry to hear about your eye problems, Ginny.
-
I'm so sorry to hear about your eye problems, Ginny.
Thanks, DR FJL. The doctor had told me a year ago that I had the beginnings of cataracts, but I was not expecting to hear this soon that it's time to address them. Just glad we got Richard's eyes straightened out before mine needed attention.
-
DR Ginny, Randy and my dad both had eye surgery in the past 12 years. Is it occurring in Middetown or another city in the area?
-
I am tod the check has been messengered to me, and so I am in a holding pattern.
-

Doctor is in Mason and he does his surgeries in Evendale (northern Cincinnati).
-
I am tod the check has been messengered to me, and so I am in a holding pattern.
So am I, as I sit here waiting for the chimney cleaners who had scheduled me for 2:30-3:00 and now it's almost 3:45 and there's been no call.
-
And if there's one thing I despise*, it's waiting for someone who hasn't notified me that there'll be a delay or that they have to reschedule. Rule #1 of customer service.
*(Actually, there are several...) :)
-
There were five of us driving up to see Trent today, but he can't receive visitors, so we stayed home and ate White Castles!
-
DR Ginny, sorry to hear the eye surgeries have to be sooner than you would have liked.
(I expected that shoe to drop at my eye exam this year, and it didn't quite do that yet.)
But isn't this kind of an elective thing, to some extent? Or is it at a point that would make a delay too critical for things like safe driving?

Yes, DR ChasSmith, there's a degree to which this is elective, but delaying too long can cause permanent damage. My major complaint yesterday was about night driving. For a while, too, I've had an off an on "filmy" sensation in my right eye while driving in the daytime and while reading.
And I have to admit that the uncertainty surrounding the future of Medicare is influencing my timetable a bit.

Thanks, DR JRand!

Back from a cup of chicken soup and a Philly cheesesteak sandwich - no packages as of yet.
-
Two and a half hours ago I was told the check was being messengered. So, WTF?
My damned life is caught up in this frustrating wait and I am not happy at all.
-
The holiday baking has begun: Chocolate chip cookies with crushed peppermint candies (not candles) instead of nuts. The secret is to sprinkle the can't on at the last minute before baking. Don't mix it into the cookie dough.
-
I learned that the hard way.

Tracked down a copy of "Bart! The Songs of Bart Howard," which was released by Painted Smiles. I thought it might have been a Ben Bagley release. It wasn't, but it will still be a introduction to the man who wrote "Fly Me to the Moon," or "In Other Words," which is a favorite of mine.
-
At 5:05 the check arrived via a rather scary messenger, who was either drunk, stoned or deranged. I was rather frightened of him.
-
"Here's your damned check!"
-
I have eaten, got out of my wet clothes and had a hot bath. The world no longer seems so bleak. I wish that contract would come through so I will be out of my financial worries for the next three months1
-
"Here's your damned check!"
That messenger was scary. He kept calling me LarryLarryLarryLarry over and over. I kept thinking, is he crazy?
-
Your description scares me, and I wasn't even there.

I'm shaking for you just imagining it. No kidding.

Listening to some Shostakovich symphonies - I'd listened to the Ormandy ones I had - symphonies one, four, five, and ten (all excellent performances and sound), and Stokowski's 11th - but I had this unopened box of the complete symphonies conducted by Mariss Jansons - so I'm uploading the others that I don't have - the dynamics are annoying - quiet so you can't hear it at all and then suddenly loud, but the entire thing is mastered at a really low volume, which I find truly annoying. So, I think this set will not do, but at least I can hear all the music before getting another set. I'll really have to love all the symphonies to want a full set.

I got to chat with Bart Howard's sister (though she was under the weather at the time and at taht point) when my "Fly Me in the Nude" parody track looked like it was going to catch on and I was trying to see if I could get "official" performance permissions for it, despite it being a parody. She was a lovely lady and sounded very proud of her brother.

I'm ready to knock off work and go home now.
Only 18 minutes to go.
Sigh.

The last time that I went to the eye doctor, I was told that I have the beginnings of a cataract (I don't remember if it was in one eye or both). But I guess it's pretty slow growing, so it's nothing to worry about yet.
-
Gratuitous Post #100!
-
Mine have been in "the beginnings of" stage for several years. I think that in view of what DR Ginny found with hers, that this next spring when my eye exam comes due again, I'll make sure this is thoroughly addressed.
-
I'm glad that check finally made its way to DR Elmore's abode okay, but the LarryLarryLarryLarry bit is pretty unsettling.

This answers my question. That is fast. Keith's progressed quickly. He could have waited longer for the surgery but his vision kept changing which was annoying and expensive.
-

So you weren't really clueless.
I was surprised to find my cataracts are still in the beginning period. Having switched doctors I don't know if there has been any progression or not. I do not notice that film people talk about.

Oh my. You are lucky he delivered the check.

Yes. It's general admission or festival seating. The door opens at 7:30, so you'll want to get there by 7:45 at the latest to get a good seat...unless we haven't sold (m)any tickets.
-
And now, I'm off. I should be at rehearsal at 7:00, and it takes me about 10 minutes to get there, but I'm not on in the first act, so it's not a great concern. ;)
Be back later!

The site isn't selling me tickets. I can get as far as putting them into my cart, and then it says my cart is empty.

I will try again tomorrow.

I toughed it out and finished Manchester by the Sea - what a dreary movie and then it just stops. 137 minutes of dreary equals a director/writer in love with every shot and word of his film. I don't know Kenneth Lonergan's work aside from This Is Our Youth, which I don't like - the actors are all fine in that low-key tragic way, and I know everyone thinks this is going to be up for a lot of Oscars, but not for me, I'm afraid. When the big reveal happens, all seven minutes of it is scored with the Albinoni Adagio, which I thought had been retired from use in movies along with the Barber adagio. There's a composer credited who appears to have written one piece of music for voices, but since the rest of the film is basically "scored" with Handel and Albinoni, well, I'm not sure I would even credit a person with the score of a movie who wrote one piece of music that's no more important than the classical bits.

The "everybody" group said the same of Lonergan's last movie, Margaret. I watched it but don't remember a thing about it. I sort of felt the same way you did. Well acted, but so what?

The critics are unanimous - not a bum review anywhere for Manchester by the Sea, but they love their little art films, and several of them talk about Lonergan and his previous film Margaret, that they seemed to have gone in knowing they would LOVE this film. I mean, every single critic.

Watching the first episode of A Place to Call Home. I don't need another addiction at this time. And I'm afraid this is going to be addicting.

Yes, I think it will. I'm deep in episode two already. And I should be in bed.

And yet Margaret didn't get a single Academy Award nomination, as I recall.

But this raises doubt:
‘Manchester by the Sea’ Named Best Film of the Year by National Board of Review

“Manchester by the Sea,” a critically adored drama about a grieving janitor, was named best film of the year by the National Board of Review on Tuesday.
The film, a breakout hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, also earned a best actor award for Casey Affleck’s performance and original screenplay honors for Kenneth Lonergan, its writer and director. “Manchester” is a comeback for Lonergan, whose reputation had been bruised after his previous film, “Margaret,” became mired in lawsuits.
The National Board of Review is voted on by a mixture of academics, cinephiles, and film professionals. “Manchester by the Sea” has earned some of the year’s best reviews and is expected to dominate year-end awards. However, the group has a spotty track record as a predictor of future Oscar glory. Last year, for instance, it named “Mad Max: Fury Road” as the year’s best film, but »

I'll tell you - Shostakovich is a little too bombastic for my taste - I can deal with it from Mahler because of the melodic invention and feeling, but Shostakovich is very political and VERY Russian and it just gets wearying, especially with symphonies of that length. So, I've decided to now listen to all the William Alwyn symphonies again.

A Tacoma Police Officer has been shot and killed in the line of duty this evening.
-
It is a tragic event, but one local news station has had non-stop news coverage since 9:00.

It is probably the first time I have watched an entire newscast without a single mention of the presidential election this year.

It is very sad.

Today turned out to be another dry day.

I got to take my scooter to the old actors' lunch today.

Next Monday the temperature is supposed to dip into the low 30's. Some people are talking snow, but the weather bureau hasn't said anything about that.

Tomorrow it is back to the theater.

Ginny, sorry to read about your eye surgeries. I am surprised that they are doing them so close together. I think my surgeries were three or maybe four weeks apart.

The good news will be "the colors" that you will see following the surgery.
