Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of 800 birthday wishes, and now it is time for you to post until the 800 cows come home.

TOD:
I've got several film yet to watch from the recent free HBO weekend. Among them are SISTERS and THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Have to return to the car place today, and order (or buy and install, if they have them in stock) new snow tires.
-
The set we "retired" last year gave me eleven winters of service, which is almost unheard of, even when being as careful as I was to put them on as late and take them off as early as possible. And though the tires were still driveable, they certainly weren't giving me all the original traction during their last couple of years. But boy, they were good. Bridgestone Blizzaks. Don't know if I'll get the same this time, considering the age of the car, but we'll see.

Good morning to all

Good morning, all!

I am fighting a cold. For two days now it's been doing its damnedest to take over my body. The space between my shoulders and eyes is filled with gunk I cannot dispel, my throat is on the verge of being a "sore throat" and I wish it would either settle in for the winter or my system would overcome it before it takes hold.
-
Outside of that, I'm in a pretty good mood. I have no plans to leave the apartment today. I have another New Yorkers song, and Rob Berman is coming by tomorrow to visit, look at the scores I have here, and take a gander at my full score for The Golden Apple.
-
I have one more disc of Season 1, A Place To Call Home; the evil Regina has shown up.
The Japanese visit was interesting. My mother's sister Ruth was engaged to a young man, Kelly Borders, when WW2 broke out. He was captured by the Japanese and lived through hell for four years. He was in the notorious Bataan Death March, and when he came back to the States, she foolishly married him, refusing to acknowledge his serious mental issues and emotional problems. In passing, he would occasionally tell us about living on rotting fish heads and wormy rice when we complained about something put on the table, but I will never know all of the horrors he went through.
He was always kind to us, but there were "whispers" among my mother's sisters; I remember during the McCarthy eras that he was reading things like "Truman and the Jews are destroying America," "Is your neighbor a Communists?," and other shit like that. Because of his emotional wounds, he was on government disability, and he had a menial job working in a foundry. My cousins grew up in real poverty. As he aged, a lot of things came to the surface and he came to despise my Aunt Ruth, the most artless and foolish of my mother's four sisters. Their last child, after two daughters, was a son, who suffered brain damage, and my uncle used him as a pawn against her: the boy grew up with a very ugly. violent misogynist attitude, and after my uncle's death, my aunt feared him and begged my mother and our family doctor to commit him. He was institutionalized for several years. Just after I moved to New York he was released against my Aunt Ruth's wishes and he moved back into her home. He was around 18, and his sisters who were in their late 20s or early 30s had moved away from home.
One morning, shortly before noon, my mother called to tell me that he had beaten my aunt with a Coke bottle, which led to her having a stroke. She literally crawled across the street to collapse in a neighbor's yard. When the emergency team arrived, my aunt begged them to let her die, and she died in the ambulance. When I called later in the day to see how things were going, Randy told me my mother was out in the car looking for my cousin. She had a gun and was going to kill him. That didn't happen, and my cousin since then has been in and out of institutions.

Harrowing story, Elmore.

Oh my DR ELMORE.....so sad.....

I too am staying in today. We have lots of HEAT and everything is working correctly and we now have a truce on the thermostat....said person can only turn the temperature up or down.....nothing else is to be touched.....

This is IT!
My last work day of 2016 (for pay, at any rate).
I'm feeling so relieved it's not even funny.
I'm quite ready to laugh.

That is impressive. I am not sure how many sets of studded tires we purchased for the SUV in Ashland, maybe 2 in 16 years. The last couple of years we used all weather, as we did for my car, and stayed home if studded were needed.

Thank goodness Jack managed better than your uncle. What a sad, scary story.

I like your truce. We have a new Nest thermostat which I am content with only looking at. Keith can control it away from home using Google his phone.

SAFE AND EASY TRAVELS HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS!
-
It's a wet day here in Oakland CA.
-
We are having a treat at lunch. A great barbecue joint called "Phatt Matt's" in Berkeley is one of the clients of Caviar.com which places orders for many eateries and delivers them.
I have placed seven lunch orders that include brisket, pulled chicken and pulled pork with a variety of sides including yams, mac and cheese, beans and seasoned greens.
This place is gonna be stinkin' GOOD at lunch time.

Where, to coin a phrase, IS everyone?

Back, with new snow tires and $487 the poorer.

Snow Tires.
DR RLP how many weeks are you working in 2017....when are you going to RE-tire?
-
Back, with new snow tires and $487 the poorer.
Merry Christmas.
I found out yesterday my crown will be $900+ and my dental insurance covers only 40%..
-
Any more videos, BK? That first batch was a beaut.
-
Friday afternoon greetings! I went to Centerville this morning for an art journaling class at Marco's Paper.
-
I think that's it for the videos, but I'll check.
-
For lunch, I had brisket, beans and greens.
It was yummilicious.

You must have Delta Dental.

Crowns are terribly expensive and we don't have any dental insurance. 40% looks good to me ;D

My mother never cooked brisket and I never had it until I began eating dinner at Keith's parent's home. I was so fond of it I have never cooked it either.

Thanks, John! I tried it again here at work and it worked, but when I went to the app and logged in, I can't find the damn movie on their app!

Go to Mexico to have your crowns done. A friend of my mom's lives in Arizona (I think), right on the border. This friend had done a lot of research in finding a good dentist, and I guess a lot of the dentists in the border towns are trained in the U.S. My mom said that it cost about a tenth of what her dentist in town would've cost. He checked the work when she got back and said that they did real good work...but they can charge a lot less.

Funny, I would be a bit embarrassed to ask my dentist to check the work because I went someplace less expensive. Good for her. Our dentist here is way more expensive than our dentist was in Medford, who was less than the dentists we didn't like in Ashland.

I'd pay $900 for either of those!

It is icy out today so we carefully walked to the clubhouse gym. Keith used the cross trainer while I walked on the treadmill. Then we carefully walked home.
-
Back from picking up packages and buying new sheets - replacing the ones I've now had for five years because of an unseemly rip I hadn't noticed.
-
And a new kitchen steel garbage thing - the plastic one I had was broken.
-
And a new bath mat.
-
Now I'm listening to John Barbirolli have his way with Mr. Sibelius - and it's quite lovely in the first symphony.
-
A new bath mat can be quite comforting.
-
Sir John has never let me down although I have mostly listened to his recordings of Elgar.
-
I'm listening to one of the CDs that I received from BK: "Also sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss, and "The Planets" by Gustav Holst (on the same CD (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000056TKD/)), with William Steinberg conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra. I've only heard the introduction to "Zarathustra" (from 2001: A Space Odyssey), and nothing of "The Planets." Now, I'll hear all of both pieces. :)

I love Sir John and I am really enjoying this set. However, in the kick in the pants department, disc five is missing, so I called Amazon. I'd done this through a third-party seller, but Amazon actually refunded me and said I didn't have to return the item. So, I found another copy for eight bucks and have ordered that. The set I received, which was fulfilled by Amazon, hence the refund through them, was also in a case that was trashed so I'm happy to get a proper copy and if anyone wants the Barbirolli missing the fifth disc, contact me - all the symphonies are present except number six, so most of it's there.
-
Let us know what you think of The Planets - my favorite performance thus far.
-
It's interesting that "GUSTAV HOLST * THE PLANETS" gets first (and bigger...fewer letters, I know) billing on the cover, but "Also sprach Zarathustra" plays on the CD first.
-
Just got a very sweet e-mail from a dear reader in England who reads the notes every day, and has been discovering Villa-Lobos thanks to my enthusiasm. He bought the Batiz set, and tells me he can't get past the first CD because it's been on repeat constantly - I'd say that's an endorsement of some sort :)

He conducts the hell out of a great Madama Butterfly recording.

Yesterday I placed an order from Zingerman's Deli in Michigan for Bryan & Craig. Included was their Jewish Rye bread I enjoy, except I am the one who likes it. I just called and easily changed the rye to a different bread they should like more. I think this place consistently has the friendliest phone staff of anywhere I have dealt with.
-
The guy on the phone said people in NY order the Jewish Rye. That surprised me.

DR Ginny are you reading "The Book That Matters Most"?
Just finished it and returned it to the library. Have you read it?
-
As much as I enjoyed Sanderling's Sibelius yesterday, thus far Barbirolli is making me enjoy this music anymore - these recordings were always criticized for sound in their LP incarnations, but this 2000 remastering is justly praised. Most of the reviews I've read really like this set, save for one pretentious, pompous twit. It's hilarious to me to read these things - one person's opinion speaking as if for everyone, and acting for all the world as if he is THE ONLY Sibelius expert out there. Well, pal, your fellow critics disagree with you and so do I. But what's so much fun is that in each personal reading of these works that I've heard I hear new things because they all have their own point of view. So far, Barbirolli in the first and second is, for me, a clear winner - the recordings, first of all, are so beautifully detailed with every orchestral detail clear as a bell in the way that I love, so that's a big plus. But his conducting and his point of view is, for me, in these first two symphonies, exemplary. Sanderling, too, has a real way with this gorgeous music. Bernstein, whose set I really liked on first hearing, seems heavy-handed compared to these others - lots of fire and passion, but none of the icy quality of Sibelius, which is very important to the work. And Berglund, despite sound I'm not in love with, I still like for certain symphonies. But this Barbirolli will automatically become top shelf if it continues like this.

I've enjoyed several of Ann Hood's books and this one did not disappoint. I did figure out one of the plot twists but not the other one ;)

We are watching a very nice tribute to John Glenn on one of the Cincinnati TV stations. I met him at a meeting of the Ohio Board of Regents here at the late, great Manchester Inn. I was about 6 months pregnant with Rob.

Mailed packages to England, Scotland and The Netherlands. I don't even want to say how much postage was.

Watching The Great American Baking Show, which I recorded. Anyone else watching this special Holiday series?
-
I've attempted to watch Hairspray three times and haven't seen the whole thing yet. I've been so tired and keep falling asleep. It's not a reflection on the show. I'm enjoying it for the most part, but not sure how much of Harvey Fierstein I can take.

Thanks. I put a hold on it at my library. I didn't realize she wrote so many books. I read "The Knitting Circle".

I read a beautiful article on his wife, Annie, her disability and their love story. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/12/09/to-john-glenn-the-real-hero-was-his-wife-annie-conqueror-of-disability/?utm_term=.62bf1e6022b2)

Well, it's time for me to leave work and go to the theater. It's been raining all day, so there probably won't be much snow or slush left on the roads. Hopefully, we'll have an audience.
Be back later.

Blu-ray: Moby-Dick. Just finished it. Wonderful.
I had never watched this movie at a time when I was really up for appreciating it, on just about any level. And how rewarding it is now.

Back from a fun birthday dinner with fellow birthday person Sami's mom (and Sami of course). Ruth's Chris in Woodland Hills - excellent but not as good as the Hills of Beverly. I had my New York, we shared lobster mac-and-cheese, and it was deelish and we all laughed quite a bit.
-
Finishing the Barbirolli Sibelius third - the "critic" especially was harsh on this crying about how slow the second movement is - and yes it's three minutes slower than Bernstein and Sanderling, but the same guy does bring up Berglund as being exemplary and Berglund is within seconds of Barbirolli's. Furthermore, it doesn't feel slow at all, it feels right.
-
I finished Dough, which was entertaining. I also finished the Sherman Brothers' Huckleberry Finn, which wasn't anywhere near as good as it should have been. The score is fine, but the direction is so lackluster and flaccid that nothing lands. There's no punch despite a solid cast with Harvey Korman and David Wayne as the King and the Duke. I also liked seeing Gary Merrill as Pap.

Hello, 11 guests!
-
Who's your favorite conductor of Sibelius?
-
On that note, I'm outta here.
-
Good night, all.
-
Symphony five playing - so far, so good - this is my favorite and I've yet to hear one with a final movement that completely had me by the throat - the Sanderling was pretty good, the Bernstein a bit better but only in that movement, but none, for me, have been perfect - hoping for the best here.
-
I need to stop coughing so Keith can sleep.
-
I did really like the Barbirolli Sibelius 5th - it's a bit different reading of the final movement - not sure it's perfect, but I now prefer it to all the others I've heard. Still have two sets (one on Blu-ray, one on CD) to go through, then I think two more will arrive shortly.
