Title: CROSSING THE 100-PAGE MARK
Post by: bk on January 10, 2017, 12:10:40 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes crossed the two-page mark, and now it is time for you to post until the crossing cows come home.

I had my first carbonara just several years ago and loved it.  Over the next couple of years I ordered it a couple of times at other places, where it ranged between so-so and yucky.  I haven't yet been back to the original place, and I really must go there to see what the difference is ... and if there is indeed a big difference or if my tastes changed since that first time and I'm not really crazy about carbonara.  Yes, this I must do.

Jane, I started reading Proust because it had been a New Year's resolution when I was in my 40s and I never got around to it. Now I'm loving most every word and trying not to rush it.

That said, I read 12 pages last night not because I wanted to read that much but because the paragraph was that long. Yes, one paragraph.

I started with the Moncreith. But I'm now reading the series that Christopher Prendergadt edited. It's supposedly truer to the original. That I can't say, but the writing style is more conversational, less arch.

TOD:

If I see something on a menu with a Puttanesca sauce made with anchovies, I will likely order it above all else. There is something so rich, salty and bright about the mix of tomatoes, olives, capers, anchovies, garlic, olive oil and crushed red peppers that I can't resist. I'm drooling as I type this. I may have to make some soon.

But I don't think it's right to eat that much garlic before going to the dentist.

And here's a puttanesca sauce I'm going to try. The writer talks about adding lemon zest, which I think would be wonderful. I also like her explanation of the name, which sounds more plausible than the urban legend about it having originated in houses of ill repute.

I love virtually all Italian food. My favorite restaurant was called something like Westwood Pasta, but it wasn't located in Westwood, which was odd. Papa Louie's in Santa Monica was also wonderful with the most amazing garlic bread, but that's gone too. Anyway, we have a Bucca di Beppo very near us that we like, but it's not nearly as fun with only two people since it's family style. I would be very hard pressed to pick a favorite. I do love a good linguini with clams, either red or white sauce. Lasagna is also wonderful. And then there's ravioli with a good pesto sauce. And a simple bolognese can be heavenly too. There's just too many to choose from.

I've been orchestrating "I Happen To Like New York."  I've climbed the ladder and put away books; I can see the floor where they had been lying.

When I get tangled up with Porter - at some point today I'll paint myself into a corner - I can turn to Frank Loesser while I ponder my mess.

I seem to recall some music critic (Alan Rich? Andrew Porter?) comparing that song to Ravel.

Well, I got my car to the auto shop on time (it started smelling in the car as I was driving!) and they called me a little bit ago.  It turns out that it's the AC compressor.  It'll only (only!) be about $750+tax.  That's a LOT less than a whole new car, so that's good.  They should have it done by 3:00 or so.  It's not snowing (I don't think it snowed at all overnight...if it did, it didn't stick), so I think I can walk to lunch without any trouble. :)

It owes a great deal to the last movement, Le Jardin Féerique, from "Ma Mère l'Oye."

How much do I love my adopted son Joshie?  He left his brother Jeremy taping orchestra parts at the office and trudged up to my apartment with a printout of the score that needed proofreading.  It had usual copyist misreading errors and they omitted the entire percussion part.  I corrected it and phoned the fixes in to Joshie, who's finished it.  Fantastic!

I futzed and finessed (a lot) then Kay Cole came and signed 100 booklets (in record time - twenty minutes).  Then I futzed and finessed some more.  Then I went and had a bacon and cheese omelet and a bagel and picked up no packages.

Then I came back home, finished futzing and finessing (I added a couple of pages of new material) then wrote new pages, including a sequence I think is really fun and funny.  Six pages so far, so five to go.  I'll take a break for an hour or so, then try to write the five before movie night begins - not sure what time that's starting.

My favorite Italian dish was not in Italy, where i often ate in the local cafeteria with the poor Italian students, but in Quebec, where I've never had a bad meal. It was at a little place in the country, called The Inn of the Black Sheep, I believe, and the dish was Fettuccini Alfredo, which I've always loved, but rarely eat these days.

I bought my car about 2 1/2 years ago. We've had so little rain in that period that I hadn't realized that if you put  the wipers on intermittent they will sense when they need to operate. Nice feature! I'm accustomed to having to constantly adjust the speed of the wipers when in a on-again, off-again rain.

I've been enjoying a Dutch crime caper series called LORD AND MASTER. It's quite fun. You know the type: handsome, wealthy playboy likes to solve crimes. It's lighthearted and very 1960s. I'd heard nothing about it until it suddenly appeared on Acorn TV. Misleading title, IMO.

I forgot about Fettuccine Alfredo.  When we moved to Pennsylvania, outside of Philly, we discovered an original Alfredo of Rome restaurant across from the Liberty Bell.  OMG the Fettuccine Alfredo was good.  Shortly after we moved to Michigan we took the kids to the Epcot Center.  To my delight there was a restaurant there as well.  Both Alfredo's are now gone.

I typed this title on IMDB and came up with some very different shows.  I found it on Acornhttps://acorn.tv/lordandmaster/

From DR TCB:
[ img ]http : / / This snow storm is apparently being sent by DR Jane, since it is rolling in from the south. [ /img ]

You are welcome to it ;)

I am about to head out for a walk before we get more rain or snow.

Jane, I can't see your picture because it's not a real link to an image.  I added spaces to the ink in your post above so that you can see what happened.  Can you repost a link?

Oops, thanks for mentioning this.  I returned to my original post, removed "image" and changed it to "quote".

Ahh...that makes a LOT more sense. :D

LOL.   :-[

TOD:  I love most Italian food (without meat, that it) :  any pasta with marinara sauce, cheese lasagna, cheese ravioli, eggplant parmesan ( if the eggplant is cut thin) , pasta with pesto sauce.

It looks I can get airline tix for March for $159 each way from SA to LaGuardia. I guess I'm coming to New York in March.

I would suggest tickets for the weekend.  I suspect I may still be writing until the opening night.  By Friday, the orchestra and cast have settled into the show as well.

Tomorrow, I'm volunteering at the governor's inaugural ball as one of eight (I think) coatcheck persons for the first shift.  I have to get there between 5:00 and 5:30, and my shift is 6:00 to 9:15.  The second shift is 9:00 to 11:45.  To be able to volunteer for this, we had to fill out and go through a Washington state background check.  I guess I passed.
