Well, I must get some sleep now.  I need to get up earlier this morning than I normally do, so I'd better go to bed earlier than I normally do.  Wednesday night last week, I left work and when I turned the key to start my car, I just heard a "click" and then nothing happened!  My car did NOT start up.  I tried not to freak out and calmly took the key out of the ignition and tried again.  Again, nothing.  I had to attempt about 8 or 9 times before my car actually started up and I was able to drive home!  In the morning, I held my breath as I turned the car key, and fortunately it started right up.  I called the auto place where I usually take my car and the earliest that they could take me is today at 8:30 a.m.  Also fortunately, my car has had no troubles at all this weekend, but I'm still going to have them look at it.  We'll see if they're able to find something...and hopefully, it won't be expensive.  So, I'm off to bed.

TOD:  I don't know that I have any real top favorites among the big studio monster movies

But I do recall an imaginative movie (called Alligator), about a father who flushes his kid's pet alligator down the toilet, and it grows in the sewage system and wreaks havoc.  i recall that it was quite intentionally very funny at times amid the terror.

T.O.D.

My all-time favorite big monster movie is THEM!

The giant ants might not be up to today's special effects standards, but the movie has an intelligent script, good performances and has stood the test of time for over 60 years.

We watched MOONLIGHT yesterday afternoon.

It had excellent performances (Naomie Harris was magnificent); several heartfelt scenes, BUT the "Best Picture of the Year"?

PLEASE!

I have yet to see LA LA LAND, but HELL OR HIGH WATER and HACKSAW RIDGE are much more involving and enduring films than MOONLIGHT.

For me, the "Best Picture of the Year" should be a movie that people, over time, will want to see more than once...or twice.

MOONLIGHT may be very touching, but I'd never want to see it again.  It's a "film of the moment".

There are so many "films of the moment" that have won Best Picture and that now, aside from film buffs who want to see it because it won Best Picture, are otherwise forgotten.

A few other "films of the moment": GOING MY WAY, THE LOST WEEKEND, GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT, THE ENGLISH PATIENT.

Except for historical reasons, who watches these movies any longer?  Yet, they beat out such revered classics as: DOUBLE INDEMNITY, MILDRED PIERCE, SPELLBOUND, MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, CROSSFIRE and FARGO.

DR Druxy, I watch Going My Way every other year or so at Christmas, but it wasn't a best picture. English Patient, however, I loved. I've seen it now a half-dozen times, including twice at the theater. The scene of lighting the chapel is a favorite--and it wasn't in the book.

Although my wife and many other people I know hated it, I enjoyed THE ENGLISH PATIENT, though it's not something I'd necessarily want to see again.  On the other hand, FARGO is a movie that I've seen many times and will, in all likelihood, see many times again.

The same goes with GOING MY WAY and DOUBLE INDEMNITYDOUBLE INDEMNITY is the film that has endured all these many years.

Certainly the worst choice for Best Picture occurred in 1952 when THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH beat out HIGH NOON, THE QUIET MAN, IVANHOE and MOULIN ROUGE. Not nominated that year were VIVA ZAPATA, THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL and, get ready for this, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN.

I have seen Fargo about as many times as English Patient.

To me, the worst ever was Forrest Gump's win over Pulp Fiction.

I've loved FARGO more every time I've seen it.

And for me, THE LOST WEEKEND easily transcends being an "of the moment" film.  I'm about due for a viewing of it.

I'm certainly not suggesting that THE LOST WEEKEND is a bad film.  I'm just saying that it hasn't endured in popularity like SPELLBOUND, MILDRED PIERCE and another nominee, ANCHORS AWEIGH.  It's a depressing movie and, I believe, that most people want to be entertained when they watch a film, not depressed.

Kritzerland at Sterling’s 75 was wonderful! Mark and I have been arguing for weeks over whether or not The Partridge Family's "Echo Valley - 26809" would be sung or not. I was sure it wouldn't, Mark was sure it would. He won. We were thrilled to hear it and even more thrilled that Bruce himself sang it. And on top of that, "Terminal" is one of our very favorite Guy Haines songs, so we were very happy all around. On the way home Mark suggested that a mash-up could be done of the songs "Beef Lo Mein" and "Chinese Food in Bed".  ;)

Thanks.  That's it, for now (an Avenue Q reference).  I do have some other issues that will need to be addressed eventually:  a new clutch, a front-end alignment, an oil pan leak (although, it's never leaked oil onto the ground) and there's something about the lower ball joint.  So...one step at a time. :)

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/robert-osborne-dead-turner-classic-movies-host-was-84-727070

This is a very interesting tribute to him.  I did not know most of what I read.  I am sorry he died while at the same time surprised he did not do so a number of years ago.

 :(     :'(

84 is not that old, IMO, so "a number of years ago" is nearing my current age.

I'm 68 going on 69.  When do you expect I'll depart?   ;)

Because of what I read I thought he was rather ill and he didn't look all that good either.  Considering we are about the same age, my number of years ago was not intended to go back that far ;D

Nowhere in that obit was that he worked for Hefner on the cable show Playboy on the Air - reviewed movies for the show - I was on the show, too, as the sex news reporter, and we got along famously.  I used to seem him at the opening nights at the Ahmanson and we always said hello.

None of the online obits I've read tells Robert Osborne's story in the same way. Each has great anecdotes about the man.

In the absolutely amazing department: When Twilight Time did Experiment in Terror I was beyond thrilled as I love the movie.  So, I had Mik Matessino make me a copy of what they used for the isolated score, which was a mono up and down music track that had the terrible movie edits mixed in with source cues that faded in and out - I couldn't even listen to it.  But today, a friend gave me the complete score in stereo - I have no idea how someone had this but it just goes to show you that you never say never about scores.  Unfortunately I can't release it - not only complicated by the RCA re-recording, which we could work out, but that the film is Sony and the music guy there is a complete jerk - I had so many e-mail volleys, offered to pay the exorbitant license fee on certain titles, and they simply would never make a deal, which they had with a few other labels.  I finally just told the guy off.

“My Fair Lady,” which won the Tony for best new musical in 1957, will return to Broadway next year for the first time in a quarter century.

Lincoln Center Theater said Monday that it would stage a revival of the musical, directed by Bartlett Sher, who has become the nonprofit organization’s go-to director for revivals of midcentury classics.

Alec Baldwin once interviewed Robert Osborne on a TCM special and many of the things mentioned in his obit were talked about there.....his connection to Diane Baker is very interesting, they had remained friends since he did a screen test with her at Fox....the test that got him a spot in Lucille Ball's Desilu Playhouse cast....

I also like the story he told about Lucy saying to him......"You're a writer, why are you doing this?  You don't want to do this the rest of your life - go do something interesting!"

What a story MR BK.

Some people overvalue what they have - i.e. Susan Nicholson Hofheintz who thinks she going to get a couple of million dollars for the AIP films she has the rights to [including "I Was a Teenage Frankenstein" and "The Amazing Colossal Man"] - and others are just asses who don't have any other way to feel important.....

Darn, sorry about that.  I have purchased a few books I have been alerted to.  One book came from the author instead of Goodreads as I am on her facebook page.  I only buy books I can't get from the library.

Do you receive notifications of books by authors you like or when a book has been released that you have marked to read?

No I don't receive notifications when books on my TBR list are released. I do get an email though every month showing new releases for the next month (including books on my TBR list). I am pretty obsessive about goodreads though. So I'm usually very up to date when authors I like release books.

I came across this recipe. I think it's a Baptist plot.

Asparagus Salad

Heat 1 can of asparagus soup. Add 1 package lime gelatin and stir to dissolve.
Mix in 8 ounces cream cheese, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1 cup chopped celery, 1/2 cup cold water, 1/2 cup chopped pecans, 1/2 cup green pepper, 1 tablespoon onion. Congeal.

This treat comes from Glenda Dunaway and is from the 1978 collection, "Favorite Recipes: First Baptist Church, Granbury, Texas"

Parts of Tacoma did get snow this morning, but not here.

When I left this morning to take my car to the auto shop, it was kind of sprinkling.  By the time they drove me to work, it started snowing!  (They fixed my car fairly quickly and they came to pick me up just a couple of hours later.)  When I went to lunch at Subway at about 2 pm, it was very sunny, and when I left to go back to work at about 2:45, it was hailing!
