Well, you've read the notes, your are at ho with the notes, the notes are at ho with you, and now it is time for you to post until the ho cows come ho(me).
-
First post huzzah!
-
Somebody post already. Get in the fershluganah Christmas spirit, will ya? Don't just sit there like so much fish or I will bitch-slap you from here to eternity and hell and back. There, how's that for Christmas spirit.
-
Whew, jrand got in just in the St. Nick of Time.
-
Of course, the WUSSBURGERS all know who they are and I'm sure they'll be back in the morning saying, "Oh, dear, I'm such a WUSSBURGER, I just HAD to be a WUSSBURGER, being a WUSSBURGER is in my nature and no matter how hard we may try we cannot change our natures. And I shall laugh and laugh for I am in the Christmas spirit and I feel benevolent and benign or even beten.
-
My goodness, just fifteen more posts till I achieve a sort-of new plateau.
-
Hmmmmmmmm......well....I think the Electronic Hat is the only way to go. A quiz would be great, but not all HHW's are fluent in theatre, tv, and movies - as others are....and then there is the question of when to log on.
Of course we could have an essay contest of some kind - which means MR BK would be doing a LOT of reading.....
Maybe something else will come to mind later.
Christmas foods - HARD CANDY, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I also like Christmas sugar cookies. Main course....hmmmmmmm.....roast beef slices and cheese....hmmmmmmm....we don't have a regular Christmas dinner, so I will have to wait for some other DR's to see if anything sounds familiar.
I think today is going to be another day when HHW will make me hungry.
I ordered the Ken Bloom book at Amazon.com and it is on it's way! However my Broadway Christmas CD is delayed.
December 13 - hard to believe, and yet is true.
-
LOL....indeed.
-
Goldilocks and the Three Bares - I am intrigued.
-
Was Miss June Wilkinson at the Pogue-do last night?
-
I shall not go to sleep until there are five hundred postings.
-
I shall not go to sleep until there are five hundred postings.
Hope you have plenty of No-Doze, bk. The wussburgers will have you up even after the cows are home and sleeping themselves.
-
A contest with What If DVD prizes? Sounds simply ginchy and too too to me.
-
500!
But it's my bedtime!
At least Jed and I got it started.
-
I'm still here, just like Yvonne de Carlo.
-
I'm back. Just finished my first ever viewing of "The Magic Show" It is not nearly as bad as I had been led to believe. Of course it's 30 years since I saw it staged and I have forgotten much of it. I was surprised to see Melbournian Jon Finlayson in the show. The Melbourne had Samantha Sang.
-
Favourite christmas food - NUTS. I don't eat them much during the year. I also love traditional Christmas cake - almond icing and marzipan!
-
Christmas DVDs from BK. Lovely idea. We're all grown ups (Well most of the time). Give the Electronic Hat some work to do. It's had an easy year.
-
I shall return in my 60th year.
-
I love parsnips as a side dish and for dessert a traditional Christmas pudding with hard sauce. I never had either until I went to England in1984. We spent Christmas day with a friend and her family and we had roast beast (a Dr. Seuss reference) with the parsnips. I also love Scotch Eggs for breakfast. I don't know if they are traditional Christmas fare but I always think of Christmas when I eat them. If we can't have Christmas pudding then a nice mince pie will do for dessert.
I must get about and eat some breakfast and get ready to fill gift bags. I will return after 4pm eastern standard time. By that time it will be Tuesday in Ozstraulia and time to shower a certain someone with wishes of the natal variety.
-
Sad to be all alone in the world at 7:20am eastern standard time
-
Hi, Ben - Just wanted to let you know you're not all alone here! And thank you for the specialized birthday greeting the other day. And tell you how much I enjoyed your pictures - especially the miniature library books!
-
Favorite holiday food items - I'm actually "in production" with one right now - cinnamon pecan coffee cake. It's another recipe from my mother and I'm making a double batch today for my contribution to the annual craft & talent auction that my AAUW branch is holding tonight. One concession I've made to "healthy eating" is replacing the sour cream with lowfat yogurt. Even my sister couldn't tell the difference. One time, though, I made the mistake of using nonfat yogurt and the result was awful!
-
My parents took out the mincemeat pies they made a couple of months ago.
My dad was perhaps a LEETLE to overzealous in their "booze-ification". In other words, your throat burns as you eat it :)
-
Good morning, all! Well, after all of last night's adventures, who knows what today will bring? Russell Warner sent me an update last night, which I read this morning (sounds like Gertrude Stein!), that our friend was seeming much better when he left her hotel, and how heartened he was by all the kind people who helped us last night. Who said New York's a rude city?
DRGinny, I hope your entire weekend was filled with birthday treats.
DRBen, thanks for sharing all of Baxter's handiwork. He's such an amazing artiste! When am I coming down to see your tree?
TOD: marzipan always meant "Christmas" to me, and peppermint candy canes. Because we were rather poor when I was growing up, we always had lots of ribbon candy from the five and dime and nots of unshelled nuts: brazil nuts, pecans, walnuts which we'd help my mother shell and she would put them into chocolate fudge she made for the holidays. She and her sisters, when together, would laugh about taffy pulls when they were young, but we never made taffy.
-
'morning Elmore! - Sorry to hear about the mishap your LC friend had last night. It's comforting to know, though, that you're such a "take charge" guy for those of us who drop into the city from time to time!
-
DRGinny, I hope your entire weekend was filled with birthday treats.
Oh, it was! Yesterday, Mom treated me to the Cincinnati Pops' Christmas concert - we went on the Otterbein bus, but I was not the youngest (someone had her grandaughter along). Erich Kunzel really puts on a show and Music Hall was beautiful. My favorite performers were the CCM musical theatre students (all sophomores) who performed by themselves and as backup to Sandi Patty. There were some Girl Scouts sitting behind us who needed a concert etiquette lesson. They talked throughout the performances and I gave them my best Mom glare during "Baby, It's Cold Outside," by Sandy with 7 CCM "boys." She said, "Snow White, eat your heart out!"
-
My thoughts on our own traditional Christmas foods:
SWEETS!
Well, nibbly, sugary things such as our family's very own recipe for ORANGE COOKIES. (There's a line in Robert Altman's NASHVILLE that has resonated more for me than I would think most viewers, the newscaster, Howard K. Smith, (I think) late in the film says that "Christmas has always smelled like oranges" to him - - well, from where I'm sitting, Christmas HAS always smelled like oranges and orange cookies to me.
My grandmother's mince meat pie was the only mince pie I ever liked.
Our fruitcakes are not heavy enough to be used as door stoppers, but, I prefer brandy in the mixture, rather than whiskey; still there is orange juice. . .

Now, I'll sound truly dumb, but I have no idea who Sandi Patty is! CCM student Geoff Packard, who was in WHERE'S CHARLEY?, has done some solo things with CCM and Kunzel.

From yesterday's program notes: "...she is the most awarded female vocalist in contemporary Christian music history." She has appeared with EK a lot, including on PBS for Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July. I find her style a little over-wrought. Mom and I went to the Pops last year for my birthday and the featured soloist was Lee Roy Reams. I liked that program a lot better.

Contemporary Christian vocalist? Sounds like Cincinnati gets more Bible belt every day. I have a hard time with singers who have two first names anyway, so that's two strikes against her. Over-wrought seems to be the style these days and I hope it soon passes. This is my major reason for detesting the American Idol crowd, as if the more ululations and melismas you can produce are a more direct route to the ears. Like Lorenz Hart, I like to recognize the tune. I have no idols among these singers, and I think more than their feet are clay.

Favorite Christmas Foods:
Kielbasi is a Christmas food to me, even though we also have it for Easter dinner. As much as I love it (both the fresh and smoked varieties), it's far too fatty to eat more often.
My Dad's macaroni and potato salads--I remember that it took my dad just about an hour or so to whip these up on Christmas Eve to be served for the dinner the next day. After he died, I took up making it and it took me about three hours (all that slicing and dicing of onions, celery and pickles and cubing the potatoes to the right size.) I had to give it up eventually because I just didn't have the time. But a few years ago, my sister began to make it. It's very tasty, but it's still not my Dad's. As much as we all watched him make it when we were young, we must have missed something. Dad took the secret ingredient with him.
Babka--with cheese and white raisins. A must-have for Christmas morning breakfast.
Kruschiki, which is a sort of Polish pastry. Long strips of dough are twisted inside of themselves and then deep fried and then covered with powdered sugar. Great with coffee.
Buttery, buttery spritz type cookies decorated with sprinkles and chocolate.
One small slice of fruitcake. I couldn't eat more than that but I do want a taste of it each year.
My World Famous Garlic Dip. First made when I was a teen. The recipe called for 16 ozs of cream cheese and four cloves of garlic. I thought a garlic meant a bulb. It packed a punch. Amazingly, people still want me to make it every year. It's always fun to watch someone try it for the first time.

Good morning all! It is actually very early morning for me, but I have been up and down most of the night. Hmm, sounds like Viagra. Actually I took quite a bad fall during the performance yesterday. The last number in the first act is “I Like Life”, including the Toy Ballet (hey don’t look at me, blame Mr. Bricusse for that). Anyway, at the end of the number I end up down center with all the spots up on me. Then we go to complete blackout, and without a curtain, we are supposed to exit quickly in the dark. Usually a fellow actor is there to help me off, because I am totally blinded by all the spots. Yesterday, he wasn’t there, and when I turned I fell headfirst into the wagon unit that is used for The Ghost of Christmas Present.
Well, all I could think of was getting up and off before the lights came up for intermission. Naturally every move I tried just made matters worse, as I scrambled through the assorted toys, food stuffs, Christmas decorations, and lights that make up his throne. I made it off before the lights came up (I guess the light booth and the audience could see me, even if I couldn’t see anything). Also, I now know where those wooden soldier nutcrackers got there name! Our director never even bothered to come back and ask if I was okay, let alone still alive. I finished the show, but as I drove home the muscles started to tighten and the aches and pains settled in on me. By the time I got the cats settled in for the night, I was using my cane to get around.
I am happy to say that nothing appears to be broken, but without getting much sleep, I just called and said I wouldn’t be in to work this morning. I have the afternoon off to go to the dentist, so I might as well make a day of it.
Holiday Food: Well, I just received my first delivery of homemade Almond Roca from some dear friends, and one bite of that means Christmas to me.

! ! ! ! ! VIBES OF HEALTH AND RECOVERY TO DR JOSE'S DAD ! ! ! ! !
-
Favorite Christmas foods? Hmmm.....that would be a nice roast chicken, latkes and tzimmes. OH! That Christmas.....
We will be going into a Christmas cookie baking frenzy shortly, but I really don't associate any other foods with Christmas.
DR Ginny, last night I too baked a cinnamon pecan (and chocolate...and sour cream....but not from those vats that BK pictured the other day) coffee cake for our Stars of Tomorrow meeting this evening.
-
DR TCB, when people say "Break a leg", they don't mean it literally. :)
But seriously, good sir, take care of yourself today and rest up them aching bones.
-
DRTCB - sorry about your fall in last night's performance. Ask elmore about the tumble I took into the orchestra pit during the dress rehearsal for the "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" he directed...
-
DR TCB - Get better! (That's an order). ;)
-
Best wishes for a speedy recovery TCB!
Favorite Christmas foods roast beef (actually a standing rib roast when there would be few enough attending dinner to make it affordable)
with Cauliflower casserole....
you steam your cauliflower till its all nice and soft , then throw about half a stick of butter and some salt & pepper and about wa quart of sour cream and put the whoel mixture into a casserole dish , spread some more sour cream on top, sprinkle with bresad crumbs and paprika and pop in the oven about 375 until lovely and brown on top!!!
One of my Hungarian grandfather's recipes...sooo good!!
From my British husband I discovered traditional "Christmas pud" with hard sauce!!! (or as we refer to it at our house, "Burning Lump") the pudding (always storebought, , must be Crosse & Blackwell) isn't my favorite, but oh that hard sauce!!
I do love trifle though, it has become a Christmas staple, Lovely layers of bardndy or rum soaked cake, Birds custard (MUST be Birds), jello and fresh fruit top with whipped cream and served with brandied coffees...
oh only 12 more days to go!!! YUM!
-
~~~Feel Better Vibes for TCB!!~~~
Favorite Christmas foods? My mom's hazelnut cookies sprinkled with powdered sugar! She only makes them at Christmastime and they're delish! I don't know the recipe and she can only make them with her old German cookbook with all the measurments in metric (and German).
-
Yesterday, after getting two very nice trees, one for my sister and one for my work (acually, we...no, I cut them down myself), I helped my sister move some furniture to make room for her tree. The tree for my work went into our large conference room which has a lot of room...it is a conference room, after all ::).
Anyway, after all that I came home and had to bake some items for a cookie tray raffle that we're having at my work. I made some S'mores bars (made four pans with 16 bars from each pan) and a huge slab o' fudge! I used the Jet-Puffed marshmallow cream recipe and made three batches, except that I made them all at once. It was literally a vat of fudge that when I poured it out onto the giant cookie sheet (with edges...whew!) it almost overflowed! Fortunately, it didn't. Now I have to get all of that to work so that we can distribute all the cookies and treats to the different trays so that they can be bid upon to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
-
I was awoken by the sound of someone falling on a cart of Nutcrackers. Rest well TCB and my thoughts are very much with you when you visit the Dentist.
-
DRTCB - Elmore was much more considerate than your director! Take care.
-
DRTomovoz - Is it your birthday yet? If so (and even if not) Happy Birthday!
-
Clearly the most equitable way to distribute the DVD's is alphabetically by last name. And the most equitable alphabetic method is to begin a bit off-center, with the O's and work outward.
In lieu of that, please, please, please no an-actor-whose-wife-had-a-hit-sitcom-ten-years-later-and-who-later-starred-in-a-film-version-of-a-play-that-flopped-off-broadway trivia questions!
-
I really love Christmas sugar cookies when they've been iced. I could eat my weight in those, and the problem is that my weight would keep going up and up with each bite so I'd have to continue eating more and more of them.
Not a bad problem to have at all!
-
Dear TCB,
Hope your muscles are fine and that you are ache-free. May I suggest that you speak to the director and insist that you have someone to help you scramble in the dark?
-
OMG, DR tcb! You be careful! I'm so sorry this happened, but it's clear that doing theater is a dangerous profession. Quick blackouts are dangerous to all on stage, and without someone to help or some bright lights in the wings and safe paths to follow, you can get hurt so easily.
I mentioned that one of our nuns in NUNCRACKERS fell off a platform in the dark at final dress, and she had to wear a leg brace for the entire run of the show.
-
I love Christmas cake, but only if it doesn't have green cherries. Other associations with Christmas: nuts, shortbread and other cookies, and fresh oranges.
-
I had a lot of posts to catch up on and there was lots I wanted to comment on. But since I did not take notes. We shall see what I remember.
DR Ben, that mini school was beautiful!
DR MBarnum re: long distance rates to Australia.
What rates have you found so far? I just checked my regular long distance and it's only 12 cents a minute Canadian. So you should definitely be able to get something similar to that!
Btw, not sure if anyone mentioned this but Desperate Housewives and Lost both got Golden Globe noms today.
-
Ah me, it is difficult to think about Christmas foods, now that I will be spending my first Christmas in twenty years without Joe's mom. Only three of the sisters are going to be there this year (out of 5 sisters and 1 brother).
But the centerpiece of Christmas was always, what else?, the lasagne. It's an Italian family, doncha know. Surprisingly, Mom admitted to me once, after decades of cooking for this family, that she didn't like Italian food! She was Slovak and Russian.
Along with the lasagne, the creamed onions were always a matter of dipute--who took more than their share--and the cauliflower.
Fortunately, Diane is hosting Christmas this year, because she is the baker. That means horns, tricolors, and lots of mean sugar cookies with two or three scrumcious cakes. The year her husband hightailed it for North Carolina, Diane said she just wasn't into baking any more, but fortunately she bounced back and her daughters have become impressive bakers themselves.
And for them as arrives early, there is the Christmas ham, always bought from Vinnie the butcher, because Mom wouldn't get it anywhere else.
It may be a little sad this year, but we'll be there.
-
DR Elmore, I hope your friend is alright. Very scary.
And DR TCB, feel better.
These stories remind me of something I saw yesterday while X-Mas shopping. I was walking in a large store, and I passed the customer service/return counter. Just as I walked past, I saw this man slip and fall.
It was quite upsetting. I don't know if I've ever seen someone as they were falling. At first I thought he was young (under 30), so I figured he would probably be okay (the floor was not very slippery). But the more I looked at him, the more I realized he was probably over 40.
The worst part was the way he fell. His leg seemed to get all mangled. Very upsetting.
Anyhow I heard them calling for an ambulance. But after buying some cds I went back and checked on him. He was sitting in a chair. That was good at least.
But it was horrible.
-
I hope I don't offend anyone with this, but bk asked for suggestions, and I'm going to say my piece in reference to bestowing the WHAT IF? DVDs to DRs here.
One of the most frequent running jokes of bk's postings is the catchphrase "Where in tarnation is everybody?" Funny as it is, there is also a germ of truth in it. People get busy and often can't find the time to log on to the internet to post here on a daily basis. Perfectly understandable and no one's fault really, but truth to tell there are people who post here numerous times daily and others who only have the ability to check in at certain intervals and can't make posting a daily occurrence for one reason or another.
I'd like the DVDs to go to those who loyally log in here every day, in fact numerous times a day to comment on the TOTD, comment or question others' posts, give opinions on shows, films, and TV, and who generally keep the home fries burning during the day, every day.
Again, this is not meant as a criticism of anyone (and bk has already mentioned that he's only considering active h/k's) but only as a my suggestion for narrowing the field of potential receivers.
-
Yes, I also wish DR Jose's dad good wishes today!
-
On the topic of "ho, ho, ho," I noticed during my last few years of teaching that when we'd be doing ROMEO & JULIET, and one of the characters would utter, "What, ho!" there would be stifled laughter from quite a few students. Always used to make me SO mad.
-
And in the spirit of my last post, let me quote a lyric I wrote a couple of years ago, set by an erst-while collaborator for a maybe-to-be-finished-sometime-soon show:
LOW-DOWN CHRISTMAS
© 2002 William F. Orr
It's gonna be a
Low-down Christmas!
Nothing's going right.
Stores are closing,
People fighting,
And they're gonna fight
Right up to Christmas night.
Low-down Christmas!
Money's getting tight.
No one's working,
Hard times coming,
Prospects don't look bright.
But I can see some light.
Come Christmas Day,
We'll muster up some kind of cheer.
After all, we're all still here,
Made it through another year,
And things can turn aroun'.
We'll light the tree and deck the town.
No low-down Christmas
Will get us down.
Here's the low-down:
Nothing's ever bad enough
At Christmas
To keep us down.
Low-down Christmas.
Doesn't gotta be a
Low-down Christmas.
Won't let it be a
Low-down Christmas.
[Bis to fade.]
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Happiest of Birthdays to DR Tomovoz.[/move]
Here's what I just read about Sagittarians:
They are actors who love to hold court.
Their ruling planet is Jupiter, the god of good fortune.
Sagittarians make rewarding guests, and their appetite for life is matched by their enjoyment of food. They also like to be where the action is.
If you invite a Sagittarian to dinner, don't worry about how you are going to keep your guests entertained.
Sagittarius is a fire sign, embodying all the warmth and feeling of its element.
-
And belated greetings and best wishes to Sagittarians DRs Ginny and MBarnum.
-
Re: the dvd question
Here are my ideas:
1) Is it possible for someone to make additional copies? I know there are a few DRs here who can copy dvds.
2)Or what about sending the dvds out and then after each DR watches it, they send it to the next DR on the list.
3)The problem I have with the trivia contests is that they are usually quite hard, and that really limits who could win.
4) re: putting names in the electronic hat, that is a possibility, although then how do you decide who to include in the hat?
-
DR Elmore,
I didn't tape last night's Desperate Housewives, but try to find someone who did. It was a great episode. There are lots of the expected unexpected developments, and one scene in particular found me laughing uncontrollably.
How is your friend feeling today?
-
Re: Desperate Housewives
Check next Saturday. I thought they were repeating every episode the following Saturday. Does anybody know if they are still doing this?
-
Re: Golden Globe noms
Here are some interesting ones I remember from this morning:
Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, AND Marcia Cross nominiated for Desperate Housewives.
Phantom of the Opera nominated for best move/musical/comedy. And the young girl (emma?) is nominated as well.
-
In lieu of that, please, please, please no an-actor-whose-wife-had-a-hit-sitcom-ten-years-later-and-who-later-starred-in-a-film-version-of-a-play-that-flopped-off-broadway trivia questions!
Yeah. Give us clueless Dear Readers a chance.
Greetings from the library where I am spending my last few moments CRAMMING for my boring survey class final. Google.com has really made this easier. But it's still boring. Vibes please!
I don't know if yesterday was Tom's birthday or if it's tomorrow or even when yesterday and tomorrow are or were or will be, Australian-wise speaking, so to save myself from running around in circles, I'll just say HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM right now and if I'm too late, he can save it for next year.
-
Feel better, Dear TCB!
-
*****Healing Vibes to DR Jose's dad*****
-
More food, that's what we need around here.
We will, of course, be celebrating Tom of Oz's birthday in tomorrow's notes, but feel free to do it today, too, if you like.
I'm pondering the DVD situation. The Electronic Hat might be a good idea - just toss in everyone's names (all our regular posters) and see who the hat chooses. I would prefer that people didn't make copies - don't mind if you talk about it here, but copies have a way of making copies have a way of making copies and I can't have these floating around in the ether everywhere.
-
Oh, and I forgot the topic o' the day. My favorite Christmas food is floop. Bet no one saw that coming.
As soon as I am done pretending to study, I will go get a Cherry Coke. That's what will get me through the test, not all this "studying."
-
These stories remind me of something I saw yesterday while X-Mas shopping. I was walking in a large store, and I passed the customer service/return counter. Just as I walked past, I saw this man slip and fall.
I have no idea why, but this reminded me of something I saw yesterday whilst Christmas shopping,
Just as I passed Abercrombie & Finch I saw a young, tan muscled Adonis, about 20 years old posing and twitching his well toned postier in the lobby of the store. He was wearing a pair of A & C shredded jeans low slung to there....
just the jeans
not shoes, no socks, no shirt...and looking ready to service
I had the 11 years old Vixter with me...
she wanted to know why the man wasn't being tossed out of the mall...
"Aren't you supposed to wear a shirt and shoes in a store?"
When I explained that he worked there she looked at me
increduously and said 'That's his job? Being naked in public?"
She also couldn't figure out why anyone would pay $80 for ripped jeans.. "They look like he fell off the monkey bars like a million times "
So I am raising a child with no fashion sense but perhaps some common sense.
Somehow I found the whole incident somewhat disturbing (and yes a little titillating I must confess )
-
Re: Desperate Housewives
Check next Saturday. I thought they were repeating every episode the following Saturday. Does anybody know if they are still doing this?
No, they aren't doing this any more. I think they figured out it might sap some of their Sunday audience of folks knew they could also catch it on Saturday. ABC wants the biggest audience possible on Sunday.
-
Ms. June Wilkinson was indeed at Pogue's party, though she came late so BK missed her. Sooo many people were at the "do", that it seems to have been one of the best yet. It must have been because I didn't get to sit down until late...I was answering doors, getting folks drinks (I always get them their first one, after that they're on their own and free to raid the refrigerator), seeing folks off...I haven't taken a head count yet, but it were a lot of folks.
Ginny, when I was in High School in Northern Kentucky, our school, Highlands, sang every year with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. The Orchestra would come to our high school auditorium and do a concert with us. It was then conducted by one Max Rudolf. But Erich Kunzel, then a very young man, was associate conductor (or whatever they called them back then)and held the baton at many of those concerts. He and our music teacher, Robert Knauf, became life-long friends. One year our choir along with a bunch of other Greater Cincinnati high schools and local choirs performed with the Cincinnati Symphony at the Music Hall under the direction of Robert Shaw, director of the then-famous Robert Shaw Chorale.
And... Happy early-but-on-time-in-Australia (I think) 60th Birthday to Terrific Tomovoz! (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/party/party-smiley-023.gif)
There is more wisdom in that than in all this Keats-Hardy-Shelley-Virginia Woolf-Samuel Beckett stuff I'm supposed to understand.
The Vixter sounds very wise and she should join our family of posters.
The Vixter sounds very wise and she should join our family of posters.
Thank you, but I fear that her posts would mainly consist of her philosophy of life based on SpongeBob and A Series of Unfortunate Events.... ;D
I hope DR Noel doesn't go away for a month! In case you're still in the vicinity, Noel, you were asking a few days ago about digital cameras for under $100. There were several advertised in this weekend's paper -- which I just noticed as I was about to throw it out. The Kodak EasyShare, for example, which some of the DRs like, is advertised at $99.99 plus 10% off.
-
There is more wisdom in that than in all this Keats-Hardy-Shelley-Virginia Woolf-Samuel Beckett stuff I'm supposed to understand.
A monkey bar is a monkey bar is a monkey bar....
-
Okay, enough of the fun stuff. I need to write very hard today. I'll reward myself with a once an hour lurk and perhaps a brief hourly post. Please send me vibes of stick-to-itness and major creativity. Not too much to ask, is it?
-
We will, of course, be celebrating Tom of Oz's birthday in tomorrow's notes, but feel free to do it today, too, if you like.
I was going to comment that today was one of the very few December days on which we didn't have a birthday. And so, to all of us Hainesies and Kimmlets:
A very merry unbirthday
To you,
To you.
A very merry unbirthday to you,
It's great to drink to someone
And I guess that you will do.
A very merry unbirthday to you!
-
"They look like he fell off the monkey bars like a million times "
This is my new favorite catch phrase! Please thank the Vixter for me.
! ! ! ! ! STICKY AND CREATIVE VIBES FOR DR PANNI ! ! ! ! !
-
I just received an e-mail from a friend whose husband underwent surgery. She said that the operation went okay and they just got home from the hospital stay, which was longer than expected. Then she added that things should be uphill from now on. Should I take that as good news?
-
I have no idea why, but this reminded me of something I saw yesterday whilst Christmas shopping,
Just as I passed Abercrombie & Finch I saw a young, tan muscled Adonis, about 20 years old posing and twitching his well toned postier in the lobby of the store. He was wearing a pair of A & C shredded jeans low slung to there....
just the jeans
not shoes, no socks, no shirt...and looking ready to service
The Dear Partner and I were in a mall and saw this same sort of display.
We circled the store as many times as we could before becoming too obvious.
There enlies the difference between the Vixster and us.
The DVD Dilemma
I think the Electronic Hat is a fine idea, and certainly a fair and equitable way to decide who gets a DVD. At the same time, BK, you are our genial host, who invites us into your home each day for this partay; and therefore I certainly think you have a right to give these DVDs to the people you would like to receive them. After all, that is part of the spirit of giving that makes Christmas so special. So, I think whatever you decide should be acceptable to all of us, without any hard feelings………… By the way, did I mention, BK, that I consider you to be an artistic genius and truly one of the world’s great renaissance men?
Thanks to all of you, for your good wishes and vibes. I think I will live, and I am quite sure that my visit to the dentist should completely overshadow any other aches and pains that I might have been experiencing.
-
Dan-in-Toronto, Your friend's remark about everything being "uphill from now" is actualy an interesting bit of semantics. Because we usually say things like "it's an up hill battle" to imply a certain degree of difficulty. But alternatively, "downhill" doesn't usually mean an easy journey either, but rather a descent into the chasm. It seems the only place that is safe on the hill is at its apex. So I suppose her phrase was meant to suggest good news. It's probably better to be moving toward the apex rather than sliding down away from it.
-
BTW (By The Way in internet lingo), thank you BK for your parting message in last night's posts. One of the great things that separate this site from so many other sites on the internet, is the fact that we can all express our opinions on different issues, openly, without fear of being attacked my other members of the group. From time to time, some of us forget that (myself included). It is nice to be reminded why we all come back here day in and day out.
-
DR Jose: Please check your messages. Thank-you. :D
Favorite Christmas Foods:
My Dad's macaroni and potato salads--I remember that it took my dad just about an hour or so to whip these up on Christmas Eve to be served for the dinner the next day. After he died, I took up making it and it took me about three hours (all that slicing and dicing of onions, celery and pickles and cubing the potatoes to the right size.) I had to give it up eventually because I just didn't have the time. But a few years ago, my sister began to make it. It's very tasty, but it's still not my Dad's. As much as we all watched him make it when we were young, we must have missed something. Dad took the secret ingredient with him.
For what it's worth, DR Dan, how things taste to us changes over the years, from childhood to adulthood. Our taste buds grow up, just as we do. This is one of the reasons I've been avoiding pumpkin pie ever since my mother passed on; I know that no matter what, it won't taste "the same" as what I remember. On the other hand, I now actually like Brussels sprouts, something I never could have imagined when I was young.
But I'm glad you have such good memories of your father. And dang, I do miss pumpkin pie.
Very-best-of-health vibes to your Dad, DR Jose.
I think what you say is true. Something along the order of "Taste Nostalgia". My taste buds are probably no longer as excited by dill weed as they used to be.
Good Afternoon!
-I slept until 12:30pm! Whew! I needed the sleep, and it was nice to get that sleep in my own bed too!
I've left a few messages with my mom and brothers this morning, and I'm assuming that my Dad's surgery went/is going well. In a sort of retrospect, he is having a somewhat routine surgery nowadays, so that has been easing my worries.
Thanks again to everyone for all the Good Healing Vibes! I'm sure the doctors and nurses will be marvelling at my father's extra-speedy recovery in the next few days!
;)
As for Christmas foods...
My parents never really made any special main dishes and sides for the Christmas meal. Rather, it was more a matter of the setting in which we ate the meals - the nice tablecloth, the dishes, the silverware, etc.
However, my Mom usually makes those Italian waffle-iron cookies, pizzelle. And usually in a couple of different flavors. The traditional flavor is anise which my Mom doesn't make that often if at all nowadays. Otherwise, it's chocolate, orange, lemon and vanilla.
There were also a few years when all of us boys were still boys, and she would make a Bouche de Noel, or buy a nice one from a neighborhood bakery.
OH - And then there was always that Chocolate Wafer Roll/Cake made with those Nabisco Chocolate Wafer Cookies and vats of Whipped Cream or Cool Whip. Hmmm... I always liked eating it frozen.
-
Wattz a "Wattz"?
::)
This would, of course, be a Skater's Waltz as performed by Brian Boitano and Johnny Weir ... electrifying!
;D ;)
-
DR TCB - I hope your aches and pains from your fall last night will be non-existent by tonight's performance. And I hope your dentist's appointment doesn't bring on any more aches and pains.
-
In lieu of that, please, please, please no an-actor-whose-wife-had-a-hit-sitcom-ten-years-later-and-who-later-starred-in-a-film-version-of-a-play-that-flopped-off-broadway trivia questions!
Thou wouldst dare break with tradition?
(I can never figure out those questions, either. :o ;D)
-
Clearly the most equitable way to distribute the DVD's is alphabetically by last name. And the most equitable alphabetic method is to begin a bit off-center, with the O's and work outward.
In lieu of that, please, please, please no an-actor-whose-wife-had-a-hit-sitcom-ten-years-later-and-who-later-starred-in-a-film-version-of-a-play-that-flopped-off-broadway trivia questions!
(I can never figure out those questions, either. :o ;D)
Me three!
I'd like the DVDs to go to those who loyally log in here every day, in fact numerous times a day to comment on the TOTD, comment or question others' posts, give opinions on shows, films, and TV, and who generally keep the home fries burning during the day, every day.
Again, this is not meant as a criticism of anyone (and bk has already mentioned that he's only considering active h/k's) but only as a my suggestion for narrowing the field of potential receivers.
Yes, I feel that the only equitable way to distribute the DVDs would be to send them to the top 10 posters! (I would feel that way of course, because, not including yourself BK, I would be #9. ;D )
Would your duplicating of the DVDs cost too much for us to buy them? Or do you just not want that many copies floating around out there?
Here's what I just read about Sagittarians:
They are actors who love to hold court.
Their ruling planet is Jupiter, the god of good fortune.
Sagittarians make rewarding guests, and their appetite for life is matched by their enjoyment of food. They also like to be where the action is.
If you invite a Sagittarian to dinner, don't worry about how you are going to keep your guests entertained.
Sagittarius is a fire sign, embodying all the warmth and feeling of its element.
They've also got great reputations in bed!
DR CP,
I sent my friend a short note, and she wrote back saying that she should have written "duck soup." So I take it that things are well.
The word that throws me is "nonplussed." To me, it sounds as though its meaning should really be the opposite of what it is.
So I am raising a child with no fashion sense but perhaps some common sense.
They do seem to be mutually exclusive.
RE: Sandy Patti - or Sandi Patti as some of her early albums used to spell her name... Or was that Sandy Patty?
???
I used to play in a CCM band for about two years. -Actually, we were a house band for a venue here in Richmond, and we would moonlight every now and then doing CCM concerts. Our lead singer was a woman with a great voice, and we would do a lot of covers of Sandy Patti and Amy Grant songs. -Yes, this singer had a very wide vocal range. There is "big" SP and "small" SP in regards to the song and arrangements. The more quiet songs do have their appeal, and the pull-out-all-the-stops arrangements of some of the traditional hymns and anthems are fun in their own right. SP is not a singer prone to melismas and such. She had some classical training and has quite the upper range. -Some of her songbooks come in "Original" and "Low" key versions. When she sings high, she sings high! A couple of years ago, a bunch of programs were using her version of the "Star Spangled Banner" for various events.
It's nice to know her career has made a comeback after her personal life affected her professional career. She and her husband parted ways, and the divorce caused some issues among her fan base. -Amy Grant went through a similar thing.
I haven't heard any of her recent work, but I'm sure I would still enjoy the casual listen every now and then.
-
Me three!Yes, I feel that the only equitable way to distribute the DVDs would be to send them to the top 10 posters! (I would feel that way of course, because, not including yourself BK, I would be #9. ;D )
Awarding them to the Top Ten posters would seem to favor longevity rather than loyalty.
Besides, I am Number 11!
-
But, DR TCB, since our esteemed BK is numero uno (in more ways than one) being number eleven puts you in the top ten!
-
As for the WHAT IF? DVDs...
Since, BK, you are in essence playing Santa Claus here, you should just send them to whomever you would like to send them to. -Pardon the dangling participle.
I do think most of us here on the board have figured out by now that you were making DVD copies of the show. But I don't think anyone has blatantly asked to have a copy of it - at least not in "public".
Just send them out to those people you would like to give them to. That's fair.
And for those that receive them, they can just Thank BK "quietly" after receiving their gift.
*Although, I do hope that those actually involved in the making of the show will be receiving a copy regardless. <cough, cough>
:D
-
Well, I'm sure that this comes as a complete shock, but I have no particuar favorite christmas foods... actually, check that! I forgot about pfeffernusse (sp?), the sugar-coated German pepper cookies which only come out this time of year and get snapped up in seconds in my nabe (heavily German Jewish area).
I actually am familiar with Sandi Patty through her album "Together," where she and fellow Christian singer Kathy Troccoli perform a bunch of standards. I haven't listened to it in a long while, but I remember enjoying the album, if not being blown away by it.
<--checking his profile status... dangnabit, am I *still* a newbie?
LOL...
WFO's Lowdown Christmas!
DRTCB - glad you did no permanent damage to yourself! Yowz!!
Good vibes to JOSE'S dad, Sandra for her test, and.....hmmmmm....I forget....
Thanks for party update DRCHARLESPOGUE - not that I am obsessed with June or anything.... She needs to be on television more often so we can see her!
Sandi Patty lives in Indianapolis - and she isn't the typical "Christian" singer. I will see if I can find a nice photo. She sings very well, does a LOT of charity work for kids in the area, and yes as DRJOSE said, when she and her husband/manager divorced some years ago, it was a shock to her fans - but she was very upfront about the whole situation. Not a voice for everyone, I think I only have one of her CD's - but she does have a lot of fans of all ages and persuasions.
Have to go now - have to get to A/F!
Oh got my new Scarlet Street today with excellent articles by MBARNUM and td! But not by me....and no I won't stop mentioning it.
-
Der Brucer and I don't really have a Christmas feasting tradition, in spite of our being together for twenty years. I didn't start cooking until about twelve years ago, and our kitchen in Long Beach was a disaster for any "feasting" cooking. It's only been a year since I've had a decent kitchen to work in, and that's not long enough to get the traditions going.
I'm still waiting for this year's "can you cook this" requests from der B's daughter, as we'll be dining with her family again. That will mean pulling up the recipes for everything that is totally traditional (read '50s Americana), and blanding them down several notches.
-
...And yet another sign that it's time for me to move from Richmond...
About an hour ago, there was a knock of the front door from the guy who's been remodeling the unit next door. He asked if we were ever getting the broken front window fixed. I said we've been working on it, but that I've also been out of town a lot, and that my roommate has been meaning to follow up on it. Yes, it's been broken for about a year now - the former next door neighbor's boy broke it with his baseball, and his father was supposed to repair it, but then they moved, so... So, the guy then sort of threatens to call the City on my landlord, asks for my landlord's name, yada-yada-yada...
Yes, it upset me a little bit - just the whole confrontational vibe of the whole "visit"... But, frankly, my dear... I don't give a damn!
;D
Back from seeing the surgeon and proofing some of BABES IN TOYLAND this morning. The surgeon put some silver nytrate on the woulnd which burned like hell, and now it's bleeding again. He said it was overall healing nicely (!!) and I see him two weeks.
My beloved goddaughter and her godmother Celia Weston saw the premiere of POTO last night, and she's in heaven today. I think I'll take her back on Dec. 22 since I want to see it.
OH!! I didn't realize Abercrombie & Fitch was running that promotion again!!!
Actually, it's a fundraising promotion - get your pic taken with an A&F model, and the proceeds go to charity.
*Although, I think the "models" are just the best looking and built store clerks and/or local models from a local agency rather than real A&F models, but one never knows..
No, I don't want too many of these out there for various reasons, including the fact that they really aren't for public consumption. We shall see. And yes, Jose, you will definitely get one, as will all cast members.
And please do report on Mr. Rorem's partay tonight once you get back tonight. Some of his art songs are some of my favorites to listen to and to play. "Early in the Morning" always makes me cry. And some of his piano and chamber music are very gratifying too - someday I'll finally get my fingers around the Tocatta from his Piano Sonata!
In other news...
I bought a container of "Peanut Crunch" from the big Korean Supermarket by my parents' house yesterday... I've already gone through one layer... just one more layer to go...
It's like those sesame candies made with sesame seeds and honey/sugar/corn syrup/etc. This one is made up of peanuts, sesame seeds and puffed rice (Rice Krispies). They have a nice chew to them, as well as a very addictive crunch.
BK, what might be a fun way to deal with your What If? DVD dilemma (and I stress the word might) would be to institute the What If? International Tour.
This sort of goes along with what Jennifer suggested earlier: get the mailing addresses of all the DRs who want to view the DVD, sort the list by HHW Member List order, send the DVD (along with the mailing list) to the name on the top of the list. When a DR receives the DVD, they view it, cross off their name on the list, then send it off to the next name. Eventually, everyone will get to see What If?
Of course, you'll still have all those other copies on your hands to do with and to give to whomever you really want.
Okay one more idea for the dvds. If you have 10, and really want to GIVE some for people to keep, then give out 8 of them. But for the other 2, rotate them to the people who really want to see them (like what Dan wrote). I know I really want to see this, and if you don't want any additional copies made, this is the only solution I can think of so that everyone who really wants to see it can view it.
Good Afternoon!
Back from my walk. And a nice walk it was. Yes, it was/is cold outside, but the layers helped. -It actually felt warmer as I walking back from the grocery store, I guess I was warmed up by then. *Oh, and whilst at the grocery store I "noticed" that the Pepperidge Farm cookies were on sale... As were the Archway Holiday Cookies (Cashew Nougats)... As were the Cheez-Its... As were the Ben & Jerry's and Edy's Dreamery... Oh, but I did also pick up some Kleenex too since we were out - and, yes, those were on sale too!
OH! OH! OH!
Right before I headed out for my walk, my sister-in-law, Veronica, called me. She had just gotten home from the hospital where she was visiting my Dad. The surgery went very well, and she said he's just resting and recovering and sleeping now - apparently, a bit drugged up still too. ;)
And it looks like he might get discharged as early as tomorrow! Wednesday at the latest!
Thanks again for the Vibes!
:D
OK... Time for me to head out to dinner...
My friend, Mark, called me earlier, and I thought he said to call him at 6:00, and we would decide where to eat from there. Well, I just called him and said he was already "inside". Inside where? He's already at Strawberry Street Cafe - it's 1/2 price burger and quiche night. Well, I was thinking of heading over to Joe's or even giving Three Monkeys a try (they just opened around the corner)... Strawberry Street it is then!
Laters..
Glad to hear it DR Jose.
And more writing vibes for DR Panni.
-
I am pondering the DVD ponderables.
I've just finished writing seven-hundred and three pages. What a BURST.
-
And one for Mahler.
-
I must go pick up my xmas cards now.
-
And then I shall write another seven hundred and three pages.
-
Good news, DR Jose, and I'm very happy for you and yours!
-
Has anyone picked up Gunga Din on DVD yet. It was supposed to be out on December 7th. They haven't gotten in yet at Amoeba. I'm curious to know what, if any, extras are on it.
-
Ordinarily, I'd wait for bk to prompt us for the birthday wishes, but not wanting to be the last one invited to the party, let me add my own personal best wishes for DR Tomovoz on his natal anniversary!
-
No GUNGA DIN here yet, DRCP. And no, I don't think those artists are around anymore. Now and then you see them at fairs or swap meets doing sillhouettes or line portraits....but
Vibeage for DRPANNI's continued productivity. And for DRJOSE's father.
Pumpkin pie and whipped cream tonight. Delicious as usual!
-
As I said, the official birthday bash will be in tomorrow's notes, as that's when the birthday officially shows up on the board.
I'm back from picking up my xmas cards, which I didn't pick up on account of they won't be ready until tomorrow morning.
Therefore, I'm eating Swedish What is it Fish and writing another ten thousand pages.
-
DR CP - the extras listed on the GUNGA DIN DVD include a commentary by Rudy Behlmer, a making-of documentary, Looney Toons cartoon "The Film Fan" and trailers.
-
Mr BK don't run out of paper!
-
I know, I mustn't run out of paper, that's the whole thing.
Ho ho ho.
-
My vote for the DVD distribution is the Electronic Hat.
Christmas Foods -
Yesterday, we had the first ever annual family cookie baking day. I named it the Iron Spatula event. We had several representatives from different countries. We even had an opening ceremony and distributed baking hats and mom got to wear one of EL Eric's chef jackets (he's a pastry chef, you know). We had Iron Spatula chef's from Italy, Little Italy, Germany, Sweden, Japan and Germany. Being a mostly Italian family, it was funny that the only person who decided on an Italian cookie was EL Eric, and his was the best. We baked 'till the cows came home - chocolate crinkles, Brown-sugar choco chip, two different types of toll house, sugar cookies, zoletti's (EL Erics), thumb print with Apricot jam, and rice crispy treats with holiday sprinkles. When we had finished our frenzie, we had a lovely dinner of lasagna, salad and bread and for dessert, we had hot cocoa with homemade marshmellows (yes EL Eric made them!!) What a day! I never want to see another cookie for a while.
One of the reasons we did this, and this brings me to the TOD, is that for years my Nonni and my Aunt used to make dozens of different types of cookies at the holiday time. And that really meant that Christmas was here. In the past few years, as old age began to take over, there had been less and less cookies made. So this year, we decided to start a tradition to keep up the old tradition. Good Times all around.
-
Wow - GUNGA DIN is backordered or out of stock at nearly every online service. Even Amazon.com gives a warning that it might not be available for a couple of weeks. Sales rank at AC - 549!
Happiest of Birthdays Tomovoz!!!!!
I am pondering the DVD ponderables.
I've just finished writing seven-hundred and three pages. What a BURST.
Or did you just finish writing "seven-hundred and three pages?" I can do that! (an A Chorus Line reference ::))
And then I shall write another seven hundred and three pages.
"Another seven hundred and three pages."
....Therefore, I'm eating Swedish What is it Fish and writing another ten thousand pages.
"Another ten thousand pages." Wow! Writing a book is easy! ;D ;)
Thank you Matt. My mail box was somewhat full today - people think it is Christmas. They should know that the season does not start until tomorrow.
Panni, I know these vibes are really late, but I was busy taking a really nasty test. But I'm sure you'll be able to use them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whoever invented essay tests really needs to be shot.
Vibes for Jose's dad. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm glad he's doing better and can get back to his karaoke machine. Does he take requests? If so, my dad would like for him to do "King of the Road."
Happiest of B'day, Tomovoz!
Thank you for the good vibes, all.
Good news about your dad, Jose!
Happiest of B'day, Tomovoz!
Thank you Mr Pogue and fellow lover of London.
Hi all,
Today have been a very long and tiring day for me. I won’t go into details. Just wanted to touch base.
I did read notes and have something to say but don’t know how to say it without just coming out and saying it. Did that make sense? Anyway, about the What If DVD. I would love to see it but would like to take myself out of the running for one. Not because I don’t want it, I do very much, but because you have already given me a very great gift this year, BK, and I don’t feel it would be right to have another.
If it wasn’t for the gift of this board, I would never have met the wonderful, warm, cyber “family” I now have.
I hope that didn’t sound to mushy. It was true, every word of it but I hope it wasn’t mushy.
I will read the posts tomorrow. Right now I am very tired and want to hit the hay or hey early. :)
I owe some e-mail and or PM's -- forgive me but I will answer them tomorrow.
Have a good evening all!
-
Good Evening!
Back from dinner. The company - my friend, Mark - was good. The food was just OK. It might have been better than OK, but I just really wasn't that hungry. I was more or less eating just to eat, kind of going through the motions. But it was my first real food of the day, so... -Btw, Chicken Pot Pie.
After dinner I decided to continue my quest for a tray table. -I need a small "desk" for my room at my parents' house. So, my first stop was K-Mart. They only had the type with where the tray rests on top of the leg assembly, and since I'll be using it for my laptop, that was not an ideal solution. -But I did end up buying a small 3-foot, pre-lighted artificial tree - yes, from the Martha Stewart collection. And it was only $19.00! Not bad. -However, I had forgotten just how "depressing" this particular K-Mart is: over-crowded aisles and shelves, insufficient lighting, slow cash register clerks, etc. But, hey, at least I got a Christmas tree, so...
Then it was up to Ben Franklin. Well, they didn't have any tray tables of lapdesks - they don't carry them anymore. Then it was across the parking lot to Staples. Lots of chairs there, but no tables.
Finally, on a whim I headed over to Lowe's. Bingo! I got one of those heavy-duty plastic deals with the adjustable metal legs. -In fact, I'm using it now. Sort of a test drive, I guess. It seems to be serving it's purpose purposely.
Unfortunately, while I was at Ben Franklin, I happened to run into someone I just do not want to deal with anymore, professionally speaking. I was polite, and said Hi and shook hands, but what I really wanted to do was... grrr... Ah, well....
I'm watching "Cinderella" on PBS right now.... "Ten minutes ago..."
:)
My friend Betty, except for the large section of her nose where she skinned it, looked fabulous and we had a great time at the Ned Rorem event. She had a day crammed with incident from breakfast with friends to some music appraisal and other errands.
Ned is now in his 81st year, and we saw the premiere of a 90-minute documentary on his life, which was quite moving and wonderful. The section on the death of his James Holmes, his partner for 25 years, from AIDS at the age of 58 (he was around 15 years younger than Ned) was quite moving, and for all you single older gentlemen who might be looking for affection, take heart: Ned's current boyfriend is 37 years old.
There was some wonderful music, including "Early in the Morning," DR Jose, some lovely chamber pieces, scenes from his opera "Miss Julie," and his short operas based on the fables of La Fontaine, translated by Marianne Moore. After the film, there were questions with Mr Rorem and the film makers. Betty went backstage to see Ned, and I elected to come home.
Vibes for Jose's dad. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm glad he's doing better and can get back to his karaoke machine. Does he take requests? If so, my dad would like for him to do "King of the Road."
Thank you... Are you sure your dad didn't already make the request? I heard my dad singing, "King of the Road" Saturday night.
;)
*I finally realized he was going through the song listing and marking down his favorites. Boy, does have a lot of favorites!
-
...Ah, I have always loved that "Waltz for a Ball" - I think that's how it's titled.
-
Went out for dinner to be among people -- writing is very solitary - except for the people on the paper -- but when you stop, you realize they aren't really there. Or if you don't - THEN - as dear bk suggested - perhaps it's time for the straight jacket. Anyway, the people at CPK were real, but the food wasn't. Well, it was real, but I didn't like what I ordered.
Now I'm back. going to get back in my writing clothes and attempt a bit more. I used to be much better at night writing. Not these days. Early morning is great, though.
-
I have been having problems with my main user account. Every time I open or try to open explorer it would close right away. So I am trying my guest account which is working. Anyone have an idea what might be causing this to happen?
My brother is watching Fight Club. I must say that I don't get it.
-
Watched the documentaries on the DIAL M FOR MURDER DVD. That was all I had time for tonight. Tomorrow, I'll probably try SPIDER-MAN 2.
-
DR Jose mentioning watching CINDERELLA reminded me that on Sunday, when I had no more need to listen to the NUNCRACKERS cast album for practice or a quick run through/warm up in the car on the way to the theater, I packed two CDs. One was the Julie Andrews version of CINDERELLA which I hadn't listened to in awhile. (I was amazed how very, very close it is to the actual show now that I saw the show such a short time ago.)
The other was the Rosalind Russell/WONDERFUL TOWN which is such great fun. Nope, her vocals can't hold a candle to Donna Murphy's. I much prefer the original version.
-
My favorite Christmas foods also happens to be one of my all-time favorite foods the rest of the year-- MY butter sugar cookies with buttercream frosting. I try to limit mking them on holidays only-- otherwise I'd be in a hypoglycemic coma-- in haven't but very large and probably habe gout and diabetes and all that. BUT it is my my favorite. Enve as much as I like chocolate, I like these cookies better.
Bruce, I wish I had a suggestion for an equitable way of passing out your Christmas DVD's, but I have found tha life is not always equitable, so do what feels right to you.
My brother is watching Fight Club. I must say that I don't get it.
The first rule about Fight Club: don't talk about Fight Club.
DR Jose mentioning watching CINDERELLA.... <SNIP>
Speaking of CINDERELLA, the DVD is going to be released tomorrow, but I was at the local Fred Meyer on Saturday and they had the DVD on their shelves!! I didn't remember when it was supposed to be released so I didn't think about it, but then I was on amazon.com earlier today and saw it on the front page so I clicked on the link and saw that it's "Not Yet Released" -- officially, anyway. So I went to Fred Meyer tonight and it was still there and I bought it! And it was $3 cheaper than amazon.com! ;D
Here's the cover with the lovely Julie:
Fortunately, I didn't put this on any of my Christmas lists so I can pick it up and enjoy it tomorrow (I gave up watching it when it was broadcast on my local PBS channel last week--too many pledge breaks.)
Also being released tomorrow, the Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary Edition. It's a jolly holiday with Julie!
Good Evening again!
I took a little e-break, and decided to go ahead and take a nice hot shower. Just what I needed. I woke up tired, and I've more or less felt tired all day. Plus, my stomach was feeling a little upset - possibly some heartburn from the chicken pot pie. -I've also been suspecting that I've been dealing with some acid reflux again, so... ugh. However, I have been wanting to get back to something resembling a healthy diet lately - I want to be nice and svelte for my off-Broadway debut in March! - so, maybe this is just my body's way of telling me to stop eating so much junk right now.
And speaking of junk... The candy machine at the theatre had the new Hershey's "Take Five" bar - five layers: pretzels, caramel, peanuts, peanut butter and chocolate. Pretty tasty!
Watched a bit of BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES again. The moment when Yul Brynner as the King puts his hand on Patricia Morrison's waist is SO sexy and electrifying.
I'm going to try an early bedtime tonight so that I can get up reallly early tomorrow.
-
For those interested DRs, here's a link to the Washington Post's "Backstage" column today/tomorrow. It's a brief interview and story with Mr. Laurents.
...And here's an excerpt from Robert Wolke's Food Science column...
Warning... Well, you've been warned ;)
Among the ingredients on some candy my son received at Halloween was "shellac." Why would shellac ever be found in anything we eat? Is shellac edible?
Not in large quantities, no.
Shellac is a transparent coating made by dissolving lac in alcohol. Lac is a resinous secretion of the lac beetle, an insect that lives in tropical trees, especially in India. Believe it or not, lac is used as a coating or glaze on candies such as Reese's Pieces because it provides a high gloss in thin coatings. It was used briefly to coat the centers of peanut butter M&Ms.
Shellac is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a food-safe coating when the lac is dissolved in pure ethanol (ethyl alcohol.) Vegans who eschew all animal-derived foods including honey may not be aware that shellac is an animal (insect) product.
I cannot get motivated to watch a motion picture on DVD. I already fell asleep trying. I have watched some supplements, though - all the extras on the new Criterion M, and the handful of extras on Testament. I also started to watch a movie I TIVOd called The Day they Robbed the Bank of England, starring Aldo Ray and a VERY young Peter O'Toole pre-Lawrence.
-
Hisaka, dearest, tell us some Japanese things. Siri (Iris, spelled backwards) are you feeling in a backwards mood today? Come on, now, it's still the shank of the evening, I tell you, the shank.
-
I'm going to take a nice hot shower to try to ease my aching musculature - when I come back I want to see some postings.
-
OK... I should have headed to bed about two hours ago... So, I guess I will now...
Goodnight.
-
Jose I just popped in to check your notes. I’m pleased all went well with your father and wish him continued good health vibes.
Siri you changed your name.
We finally watched the 2nd episode of HOUSE, having missed the first one. We enjoyed it so much we followed it with the 3rd episode. The next night we watched the 4th episode. Now we shall have to wait until tomorrow night for the next one.
-
I had a lovely long hot shower and have come back to TWO posts? Where did Iris go? WUSSBURGER! Where's my Japanese post?
-
DR MS - very strange happenings with AOL. Have you tried the popular "clearing of the cache"?
-
It is very cold here tonight! Very cold.
-
I can't dance -
